Captain Kraigg Brathwaite will continue his leadership role, with fast bowler Alzarri Joseph again serving as Vice-Captain. The team is scheduled to arrive in England on 23 June for a training camp at Tonbridge School, ahead of a 4-day warm-up match at Beckingham commencing on the 4 July.

The West Indies 15-member test squad is as follows:

West Indies' last test match was a resounding victory in Australia earlier this year. Since then, all selected players were involved in the West Indies Championship, which concluded in April and was won by the Guyana Harpy Eagles.

19-year-old fast bowler, Isai Thorne will travel with the squad as a development player, following impressive performances in this debut First Class season taking 31 wickets at average 16.29 in his first eight matches.

The West Indies are the current holders of the Richards Botham Trophy following the 1-0 Home Test Series win in March 2022.

Richard Botham Test Series Match Schedule:

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced an updated 15-member squad for the three-Test Richards Botham series in England, starting on 10 July 2024 at Lord's. The squad features one significant change: Kemar Roach has been replaced by St. Kitts & Nevis’ fast bowler, Jeremiah Louis due to Roach's ongoing rehabilitation from a knee injury sustained during the County Championship in England.

Lead Selector the Most Honorable Dr. Desmond Haynes remarked “Kemar’s skill and experience in English conditions will be missed however this opportunity has been long in the making for Jeremiah Louis, he certainly has the skill and experience to make an impact in England.”

The Richards Botham series, named after West Indies legend Sir Vivian Richards and England great Lord Ian Botham, is a historic rivalry dating back to 1928 when the West Indies first toured England.

Squad announced for England Men’s first two Test matches versus West Indies

England Men's selection panel has named a 14-strong squad for the first two Test matches of the three-match Test series against West Indies starting at Lord’s on Wednesday, 10 July 2024.

England Men's Test Squad:

Ben Stokes (Durham) Captain

James Anderson (Lancashire) (First Test only)

Gus Atkinson (Surrey)

Shoaib Bashir (Somerset)

Harry Brook (Yorkshire)

Zak Crawley (Kent)

Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire)

Dan Lawrence (Surrey)

Dillon Pennington (Nottinghamshire)

Ollie Pope (Surrey)

Matthew Potts (Durham)

Joe Root (Yorkshire)

Jamie Smith (Surrey)

Chris Woakes (Warwickshire)

Two players have been selected for the first time at this level –Nottinghamshire seamer Dillon Pennington and Surrey batter Jamie Smith, who will also be available to keep wicket. Both have been standout performers in the Vitality County Championship Division One this season. Surrey seamer Gus Atkinson is the only other uncapped player. He was part of the squad for the Test tour of India earlier this year.

Pennington, 25, who joined Nottinghamshire this year from Worcestershire, has been showing his promise with the ball, taking 29 Championship wickets at an average of 23.03 in the top flight.

The attacking right-hand batter Smith, who has been in spectacular form this campaign, helping Surrey consolidate their top spot in Division One, has scored 507 runs at an average of 50.70. He is set to be rewarded with his Test debut next week at Lord’s and add to his England ODI credentials when he debuted last summer against Ireland.

Warwickshire seamer Chris Woakes returns to the Test squad for the first time since July 2023, when he was awarded the Player of the Series during the Ashes series against Australia.

Commenting on the selected squad, ECB Managing Director for England Men's Cricket, Rob Key, said:

"The first Test of the summer is always a special moment, but it will be extra poignant with it being Jimmy’s (Anderson) last Test before he retires. He has given everything to the sport since his Test debut in 2003. We all would like to wish him well as he walks out at Lord’s for the last time for England.”

"We are looking forward to getting the season underway against a strong West Indies side in what will be an excellent Test series.”

Surprising England squad.

Jamie Smith is an attacking batsman who's performed well for Surrey this season but not renowned for his keeping.

Didn't expect Ollie Robinson to be omitted entirely. Woakes is 35 so this may be his last home summer, and with Anderson's imminent farewell, it'll be a very inexperienced seam attack.

WI have a more settled attack with Joseph, Joseph, Seales and Holder though Roach's injury is a big blow. Batting is weaker than England's especially in the middle-order.

Should be an intriguing series.

England haven't won in West Indies in almost 20 years. Can they end the drought?

Windiest are touring England, atleast read it correctly

Oops! I read it wrong. Thanks for correcting me.

Opposite is also true. West Indies haven't won a Test series in England in 21st century. Can they end the drought?

I believe this is supposed to be Anderson's final series. All the best to the legend.

I see a bit of improvement in the Windies. The game would greatly improve of they could get anywhere near their past brilliance.

England are trying new pacers for every series. Olly Stone, Saqib Mahmood, Mathew Fisher, Matt Potts, Ollie Robinson, Craig an Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue and now Atkinson and Peddington.
Why aren't they sticking with old ones?? 🙄

Very harsh on Robinson, I dont think he deserved to be dropped, his bowling average is pretty good. His tendency to get injured is the main issue.
Even Jack Leach has been hard done, he has played almost everywhere and has been good for English standards
.
Pennington has a pretty average record but lets see how he goes.Woakes and Potts have to lead the attack now.

Agree. They should identify a few pacers and stick with them for a few series. Chopping and changing doesn't help.

Injuries. Olly, Saqib and Fisher had back injuries .

Ollie is fat and unfit and ends up trundling. Overton got injured recently as well.

West Indies cricket captain reveals details of chat with King Charles after palace meeting

King Charles has hosted the West Indies cricket team ahead of its opening Test match of the summer against England at Lord's.

The King, who is head of the Commonwealth, expressed his care and concern for those affected by Hurricane Beryl as he met the squad at Buckingham Palace.

Speaking after the audience with His Majesty, captain Kraigg Brathwaite said: "We were honoured to be invited and it was a great opportunity for the whole team to be here.

"Hurricane Beryl has been devastating but we want to make West Indians proud and put a smile on their faces during these tough times."

Brathwaite said he had a "good chat" with the King, including speaking about horses, and that he was hoping to "make the region proud" with their performances.

Earlier this week, the monarch sent "heartfelt condolences" to the people of the region following the death and destruction caused by the hurricane.

He spoke to the prime ministers of Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Jamaica on Friday to hear more about the devastation.

It is understood the King has asked to be kept informed about the situation of those affected by Hurricane Beryl and will likely make further calls with leaders in the coming days.

The UK has announced a new support package up to £500,000 for Caribbean countries affected by the storm, which was the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record to form in the Atlantic.

Windies need to repeat the type of performance & energy they put up in Aus few months ago. Having said that, Eng start as clear favourite at home. Eng likely to win 3-0 or 2-1.

I reckon Eng are building up for the next Ashes.

Jamie Smith, Bashir are forward looking role selections to the guys they can play in Aus.

Crawley
Duckett
Pope
Root
Stokes (captain/4th seamer)
Brook
Jamie(k)
Woakes (new ball specialist)
Bashir/Hartley (spinner)
Wood/Stone/Atkinson (raw pace)
Potts/Any other (new ball support)

Woakes is critical for batting depth and I think Hartley will get nod over Leach for his batting ability. Although they really want Bashir to be able to do a Lyon role for them.

I believe Windies won one Test last time they toured England. England won 2-1.

This Windies team seems spirited. So, you never know.

WI Squad Update

Jeremiah Louis has been replaced in the West Indies Test squad by Akeem Jordan due to injury. Louis sustained a hamstring injury during the second Rothesay Test at Trent Bridge and has been ruled out of the series.

Jordan has been in the UK and has joined up with the squad, taking part in training on Wednesday. Louis has remained with the squad for further treatment.

McCullum hails instant impact of newcomers in Test team

England Test Head Coach Brendon McCullum commended the new players for their impressive performance following the series win against the West Indies.

The Test series against the West Indies marked a period of transition for England as they introduced fresh talent to their red-ball squad. The opening Test at Lord’s was particularly significant as it saw James Anderson retire from international cricket after a remarkable career spanning over two decades.

England, however, appeared to have found a worthy successor in Gus Atkinson, who emerged as the highest wicket-taker with 22 wickets and took home the Player of the Series award.

England also decided to move beyond Ben Foakes and Jonny Bairstow in the wicket-keeping role, placing their trust in 24-year-old Jamie Smith for the series. The Surrey player delivered impressive performances, scoring 70 and 95 while batting at No.7 while also affecting 14 dismissals behind the stumps.

Shoaib Bashir, who debuted against India earlier this year, too solidified his position as England’s frontline spinner with a match-winning five-wicket haul in the second Test against the West Indies.

Head Coach Brendon McCullum lauded the newcomers in the team, praising their stellar performances that led to a 3-0 whitewash at home.

"Coming into the series we knew we need to make a couple of improvements to continue to improve as a side," McCullum said after the series. "We brought in some new faces and some guys that have shown that they're very comfortable at international level, and until you give some people opportunity, you don't know right?

"What we've seen from Gus Atkinson, from Shoaib Bashir and Jamie Smith - these guys have shown that international cricket is where they belong and they've performed accordingly. It's really satisfying from that point of view, but also the growth of the side in general."

"I mean no changes ever are, are they?" McCullum said, acknowledging the conversations that they had with the players that were left out. "Keep in mind that the guys who have been in there before did a really good job for us. It's certainly no slight on them, but we felt that we needed to introduce some new guys, and guys with skill-sets which would complement the rest of the guys in our line-up.

Despite retiring from international cricket during the series, Anderson remained with the team as a fast-bowling mentor for the duration of the series.

Though a decision has yet to be made regarding Anderson's future in the coaching setup, McCullum was pleased to have the English stalwart present to nurture the pace attack.

“Sometimes when you're a player you don't always give everything to everyone else, because you're worried about your own performance,” McCullum added. “But the information he's (Anderson's) been able to pass on and the way he's fitted seamlessly into our group of coaches, we're so lucky to call upon that resource and the person he is.

"It's never easy but Jimmy seems really content right now, It's great to have him and I feel very lucky that he's part of our group."

England’s 3-0 victory propelled them from the bottom of the World Test Championship standings to the 6th spot, with a point-percentage of 36.54%.

As they approach the crucial end of the WTC25 cycle, England faces a packed Test calendar, with upcoming series against Sri Lanka (home), Pakistan (away), and New Zealand (away) scheduled for this year.
