The home tours begin with a visit from South Africa, for three (3) T20 Internationals (T20Is) at Sabina Park, prior to the start of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The Proteas then return to the region, after the West Indies Test Tour to England in July, with a two (2) Test Match Series to be played in Trinidad and Guyana, followed by a second three (3) match T20I Series at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad, ahead of the Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Good way for SA to get themselves sorted for the WC

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel has announced the squad for the upcoming T20 International (T20I) Series against South Africa. This significant series, preceding the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, starts on Thursday, 23 May, at the iconic Sabina Park. The squad has been gearing up for this exciting and highly anticipated series with a training camp held at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua.

Brandon King

The Selection Panel has confirmed that Brandon King will be the interim Captain for this series and Roston Chase as the interim Vice-Captain. King was set to lead the West Indies A-Team on the recently concluded T20 tour to Nepal before he was withdrawn due to injury. Chase, appointed instead, went on to lead the A-Team to a series win against Nepal.

The West Indies Men’s squad for the series is as follows:

Brandon King (Captain)
Roston Chase (Vice-Captain)
Fabian Allen
Alick Athanaze
Johnson Charles
Andre Fletcher
Matthew Forde
Jason Holder
Akeal Hosein
Shamar Joseph
Kyle Mayers
Obed McCoy
Gudakesh Motie
Romario Shepherd
Hayden Walsh Jr.

Alzarri Joseph and Sherfane Rutherford will be added to the squad if their respective franchises don’t reach the Indian Premier League (IPL) Final. Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran are both rested for the series and will join the squad in Trinidad on Monday, 27 May.

The Lead Selector, the Most Honorable Desmond Haynes, spoke about the opportunities for members of the squad:

“These are among the last competitive T20 International matches before the start of the World Cup. Players have the opportunity to fine-tune their skills and ensure they are as prepared as they can be for the World Cup, whether they are in the final squad or reserve pool.”

White Ball Head Coach Daren Sammy also commented on his objectives for this series:

“We have not played together as a team since the Australia series, but we just completed a very high-intensity training camp in Antigua. Now we have the chance to integrate some of our players returning from the IPL and build some momentum as a group going into the World Cup.”

The Team Management Unit for this series is:

Daren Sammy - Head Coach
Floyd Reifer - Assistant Coach
Rayon Griffith - Assistant Coach
Denis Byam - Physiotherapist
Ronald Rogers - Strength & Conditioning Coach
Rawl Lewis – Team Manager

CWI

South Africa lost eight of their last ten T20Is, including a 2-1 series loss at home to the West Indies.

The all-time T20I run rate in Jamaica is just 7.56rpo, with the six games split evenly between teams batting first and second.

Two-thirds of the 12 opening partnerships between Brandon King and Johnson Charles were worth 20 or fewer runs.

Since his 72 on debut against England in Bristol, Tristan Stubbs has failed to reach a score of 30 in 12 consecutive innings (including two not outs).

Charles has struck 74 runs from seven overs bowled by Shamsi for only one dismissal.

Romario Shepherd’s eight T20I overs in Jamaica returned him figures of 1-79.

Lots of absentees but should be an interesting series.

The last two T20I series are evenly split between the two sides with SA winning on their last tour of the Caribbean, but WI took the series in SA last year.

SA's pacers have been expensive after a tidy first over from the spinner Fortuin.

King's had some lucky edges but his intent has been rewarded.

WI 34-0 after 3.

Difficult to adjust to the wind in the Caribbean and especially on a wicket like Sabina Park where you don't know what to expect from the wicket.

Straight lines to Brandon are not working

SA seamers need to go pace off more often. Or they should have gone with 3 overs of Fortuin .

Left arm spin in CPL Powerplay phase since 2022 has an economy of 7.6

SA playing the solitary spinner while WI have four (including three left armers).

Lacking spin options, SA's pacers are gonna have to go to their variations.

Goodness what a shot from King. A backfoot punch for six.

You will not get Pakistani batsmen doing this @Rana

Yeah I'm not sure why they are bowling pace on even now.

That said , this is some intent by Brandon - very impressive.

Brandon King vs pace

Above waist strike rate :242

Below waist strike rate : 154

Saffers bowling too short to him.

brandon king 79 off 44 balls, strike rate of 180

something rizwan and babar can dream to play as openers

SA pegging WI back. No Pooran, Powell or Rutherford means it's a fairly weak WI middle-order.

What a pointless series. Most of the players on both teams aren't even going to play in the World Cup.

Good first over from Chase who extracted some turn from the wicket.

West Indiesn 175/8

South Africa (10.1/20 overs) 78/4

South Africa need 98 runs in 59 balls

Courtney Walsh end from where Motie is bowling has a bare patch offering some grip. Better for spinners. Ball skids on better from the other end.

WI are missing at least 7 players who'll likely feature in the starting XI at the World Cup (Pooran, Powell, Rutherford, Holder, Russell, Shepherd and Alzarri). Yet they're winning this comfortably.

Reeza Hendricks has really improved his game. He was not someone who used to score that quickly. Saw some of this in the PSL and he showed it again today. He should open the batting with de Kock in the World Cup too.

At full strength they are contenders to win it all.

WI manhandling SA without Powell, pooran, hetmayer and Russel.

South Africa are missing Markram, Klaasen, Miller, Stubbs, Rabada, Nortje, Jansen and Shamsi. So I don't think this is any kind of major achievement.

Of the names you guys mentioned, the only real x-factor players are Russell, Powell and Pooran.

King leads West Indies to 28-run win over South Africa

Stand-in captain Brandon King scored 79 runs as the West Indies defeated South Africa by 28 runs in the first Twenty20 international of a three-game series in Kingston on Thursday.

Opening batsman King, filling in for skipper Rovman Powell who is away on IPL duty, amassed his runs off 45 balls, hitting six sixes and six boundaries to help the West Indies reach 175-8 in their 20 overs.

In response, South Africa struggled to 147 all out, despite Reeza Hendricks scoring his 15th T20 international half-century.

South Africa's innings began poorly, with star opener Quinton de Kock dismissed for just four runs in the first over. Fellow opener Hendricks managed to score 87 off 51 balls, including six sixes and six fours, but was the ninth man out with just two balls remaining in the innings.

The Proteas failed to build momentum, reaching only 77 runs in the first 10 overs and losing wickets at regular intervals thereafter. West Indies spinner Gudakesh Motie delivered a crucial performance, taking 3-25 and dismantling the middle order, including dismissing captain Rassie van der Dussen for 17.

I'm not sure if they have better options but Jason Holder and Roston Chase look like the weak links in their main squad.

West Indies are showing every other team that they are a force to reckon with at their home. You cannot write this team off, not in T20 format.

Good point, SAF are well below their usual strength so these results must be taken with a pinch of salt.

And I don't think we should read excessively into the conditions in this series as far as the World Cup is concerned - Jamaica isn't even a host.

West Indies opted to bat first against South Africa after winning the toss in the second T20I.

South Africa Playing XI: Quinton de Kock(wk), Reeza Hendricks, Ryan Rickelton, Matthew Breetzke, Rassie van der Dussen(c), Wiaan Mulder, Andile Phehlukwayo, Bjorn Fortuin, Nqaba Peter, Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi

West Indies Playing XI: Brandon King(c), Johnson Charles, Kyle Mayers, Roston Chase, Andre Fletcher(wk), Fabian Allen, Romario Shepherd, Akeal Hosein, Gudakesh Motie, Shamar Joseph, Obed McCoy

Super Saturday continues. WI bat first again as SA try to save the series.

They're playing an extra spinner today after how pace off worked so effectively in the 1st game.

No getting your eye in for Johnson Charles. First ball dispatched into the stands :ROFLMAO:

Commentators saying it's the same surface being used so another reason why WI chose to bat first.

Johnson Charles strategy of trying to cowlash every ball into the stands finally backfires.

Difficult to do that on this tired surface against the slower bowlers.

Nqaba Peter takes his debut international wicket !

South Africa don't often fast-track youngsters but they've do so with this young 21 year old leggie. Only 15 T20s and already playing for the national team.

Peter has two now on debut. Another googly and removes the dangerous Mayers.

He's not in the World Cup 15 or reserves but perhaps one for the future.

Pace - 5 overs and 0 wickets at 13.20 RPO.

Spin - 5 overs and 3 wickets at 4.40 RPO.

Interesting tidbit from the commentator. WI data analyst saying their target is to limit the number of dots in the middle overs to 15 or less which is what the top teams average.

Pakistan played 18 today vs England between overs 7-15.

Roston Chase making a case to start in the World Cup. Decent knock today amd could provide the 6th bowling option that WI lack.

Ngidi not strengthening his case to start at the World Cup. Chase is a mediocre batsman but he's hitting him around the park.

Yeah. Very interesting. WI only played 12 dots today in this phase, including wickets lost

SA pacers getting carted. Doesn't seem to be an obvious death bowling strategy as WI now reach 200.

Although SA named a second spinner today, this looks like a venue where you need 12 overs of spin.

Results Update

WI won by 16 runs against South Africa to claim the series 2-0

Roston Chase is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his unbeaten 67 with the bat in the first innings. He says he was ready for this opportunity and conditioned his mind to play any role. Adds that the plan was to take it to the deep and also says that the wicket was better than the first T20I. On being asked about his bowling performances, he says that you have to be always ready to bowl the tough overs. Ends up by saying he is quite happy with the performance. West Indies will look to white wash the protease but it remains to be seen how they would respond.

An absolute masterclass by Windies by forcing South African batters to hit into the wind. SA look completely lost

South Africa looking much more hapless than Pakistan. Won't make semis. Calling it now. Will be England and between PAK/WI from that group.

Their fast bowlers have got hammered everywhere they have played.

Nortje’s economy rate is shockingly bad since his comeback.

Ngidi is the one taking wickets, and he’s a reserve.

Their bowlers just don't have the smarts. Just banging it in brainlessly. Shocking plans and execution.

South Africa 163/7

West Indies (13.5/20 overs) 165/2

West Indies won by 8 wickets (with 37 balls remaining)

The West Indies delivered a clinical performance to cap off the series! Their bowlers set up the game beautifully for them, with McCoy and Motie standing out as the pick of the bowlers for the hosts. Despite a commendable effort from Rassie and Mulder, who played well to take South Africa to a respectable total, it ultimately proved to be under-par against a powerful West Indies batting line-up.

Charles gave his side a flying start, going berserk from the get-go and scoring a blistering fifty off just 20 balls, which almost killed the game. Though the hard-hitting opener fell against the run of play, King stepped up and played some big shots to keep the momentum going.

The West Indian skipper also perished in a bid to finish the game early, but Mayers hit a few lusty blows at the fag end to take his side over the finish line with 37 balls to spare.

For all the talk around players like Russell, Pooran, Powell, not enough people talk about Johnson Charles. He is really underrated. Since 2023, he has a SR of 179 opening the batting. Even at this age he is a highly destructive opening batter that can absolutely murder any bowling attack on his day. And this wasn't even his best innings against South Africa. He smashed 118 off 46 at Centurion last year against a full-strength South African bowling attack, in an innings where West Indies smashed 258. Ofc South Africa ended up chasing it down, but the innings was nonetheless an absolutely remarkable display of one guy absolutely annihilating a top-quality bowling attack.

I think people also forget that he's a 2 time World Champion. He and Russell are the only players in the West Indies team right now that were there in 2012 and 2016 too.

Red-ball head coach Shukri Conrad has today named a 16-player squad for the two-match Test series against West Indies, which starts on 07 August in Trinidad and Tobago

Dafabet Warriors batter Matthew Breetzke has received his maiden Test call-up after impressing in last season’s domestic four-day competition with 322 runs at an average of 46, including a top score of 188. The Warriors captain also led South Africa A in a four-day match against India A in December.

Wicket-keeper batter Ryan Rickelton makes his return to the red-ball setup for the first time since South Africa hosted the West Indies in March 2023.

All-rounder Marco Jansen has been rested for the series.

The two-match Test series, which is part of the ICC World Test Championship, will be South Africa’s first in the Caribbean since June 2021, which saw them claim a 2-0 series win over the hosts.

Commenting on the squad, Conrad said: "We are looking forward to returning to Test cricket after a busy period of limited-overs cricket over the past few months.

"This tour is extremely important for us as we aim to improve our standing in the ICC World Test Championship. We have therefore selected our strongest possible squad and look forward to strong performances in the Caribbean.

"We have one new face in the squad, Matthew Breetzke, who is selected on the back of an excellent past season.

“The decision to rest Marco Jansen was taken to allow for a conditioning period aimed at ensuring optimal physical and mental well-being given the season-long workloads.

"Half of our squad will be part of a camp to be held in Durban next week,” concluded Conrad.

Proteas Men’s fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out of next month’s two-match Test series against West Indies due to a left side strain.

The 23-year-old sustained the injury while playing for Texas Super Kings in the Major League Cricket earlier this month. He then returned home and underwent further assessments by the Proteas medical team and has subsequently not been medically cleared to take part in the tour.

North-West Dragons fast bowler Migael Pretorius has been named as his replacement. The uncapped Pretorius returns to the Test setup for the first time since his maiden call up in December 2020 against Sri Lanka.

The 29-year-old has an overall first-class wicket tally of 188, with his most recent red-ball outings garnering 23 wickets in eight matches for Somerset in the ongoing County Championship in England.
