South Africa tour of West Indies (2024)

South Africa chose to bat

South Africa (15 overs) 45/1

Stumps Day 1
On DAY 1 of this Test match it is the rain which come out on top, as the PLAY HAS BEEN ABANDONED ON DAY 1.

It was a very short affair to be honest, we just saw 15 overs being played after South Africa elected to bat first. They got off to a cautious start, with Kemar Roach and Jayden Seales dictating the terms with the new ball.

It was Jason Holder who fold the only wicket of this match so far, with Tristan Stubbs coming out to face just 5 deliveries before the rain interrupted play. The weather forecast for the day, was quite promising, but against all odds, the rain was the one who had a ball. Unfortunately, that's it from DAY 1. The action will continue on 8th August, 2024 at 7.30 pm IST (2 pm GMT). But you can join us early for the build-up. ADIOS!

WI Vs RSA, 1st Test, Day 4 Highlights: South Africa's Bowlers Put Them On Top At Stumps

South Africa ended day 4 in the ascendance by bowling West Indies out cheaply with the new ball. The Proteas lead by 154 runs at stumps, with all 10 wickets in hand. But still it seems that match is heading towards a tie as only one day left in the proceedings .

Wow! Windies collapsed. It gave South Africa an outside chance to win.

But, it will probably be a draw. Let's see.

The final day.

Will South Africa win?

Will West Indies force the draw?

Will the rain finish the match?

END OF INNS: South Africa 173/3d (29 ov, lead by 297, 2nd inns) v West Indies
Bavuma 15 (17)

South Africa have given West Indies 298 to win from around 70 overs.

Windies have already lost a wicket.

2/1 (1.4-over).

Windies - 11/1 (3.3 overs; target: 298).

Lunch break.

Windies need 287 runs to win. South Africa need 9 wickets. 2 sessions to go.

Match is being delayed by a wet outfield.

South Africa have about 55-60 overs to get those remaining 9 wickets. Can they do that?

Windies lose their 2nd wicket.

41/2 (14 overs).

South Africa need 8 wickets. Windies need 257 more runs. 53 overs are left.

Windies - 95/3 (24.3 overs).

Windies need 203 runs from 42.3 overs. South Africa need 7 wickets.

All 3 results are possible.

A draw at least stops the rot for WI but they've got to find a way to counter Maharaj who'll be an even bigger threat in spinner's paradise Guyana in the next Test.

Good knock from Athanaze, positive intent despite battling for a draw, but unfortunately gave it away with his first century in sight.

This Athanaze bloke looks really good. But he isn't that consistent.

Anyways West Indies were saved by rain in the 1st test last year too against India.

Inspite of rain saving West Indies twice in two years, they are at the bottom of the WTC table.

Proteas lament missed opportunity as rain leaves Trinidad Test drawn

Opportunity lost for South Africa and West Indies as rain plays a major role in ensuring first draw in Men's Test cricket in more than 12 months.

South Africa captain Temba Bavuma was left to lament Trinidad’s inclement weather as his team finished five wickets short of victory during the first Test against the West Indies.

The teams lost play to rain on all five days of the Port of Spain Test, with a total of 142 overs lost overall across the match as both South Africa and the West Indies missed an excellent opportunity to rise the ICC World Test Championship standings.

The match finished as a draw under fading light at Queen's Park Oval on Sunday, with the West Indies finishing 97 runs short of an unlikely win and South Africa failing to take the final five wickets that would have delivered 12 World Test Championship points to the victor.

The draw was the first in men’s Test cricket in more than 12 months and sees South Africa remain in seventh place on the World Test Championship standings with a 26.67 win-loss percentage and the West Indies stay in ninth at 20.83 percent.

South Africa had tried their best to force a positive result by declaring at 173/3 prior to lunch on the final day, but yet another rain delay and a dogged innings of 92 from Alick Athanaze foiled any hopes the Proteas had of clinching the victory.

"We tried our best to get a result in our favour. But the wicket didn't break up as much as we expected. In the end, it was a good, competitive game of cricket," Bavuma said.

"We went in with an extra batter as a cushion. As batters, we will like to be a bit more ruthless and convert those fifties into hundreds.

"We lost time because of the weather. With the bowling resources we had, we tried our best. Keshav and Kagiso (Rabada) supported by others, a little more time and things could have been different."

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite took plenty of positives from the performance of his side, especially with the efforts of some of his batters.

All of the West Indies' top three got starts in the first innings and Athanaze impressed in the second innings as he went agonisingly close to recording his maiden Test century.

"I am happy with our batting group. The guys are quite positive, I am proud of the batting unit," Brathwaite said.

"We believed we could get those runs. It wasn't going to be easy, We need to keep going from strength to strength. The pitches are a bit slower in the Caribbean. For me, it's about adjusting when to go slow and when to accelerate,"

"It's all about belief and planning and bat as per the plan. Alick showed us that today. Hodge was good in England. His plan was the sweep and he struck to it, even though he got out to a sweep.”

The second and final Test commences in Guyana on Thursday.

T20I SQUAD FOR WEST INDIES SERIES ANNOUNCED

Wednesday, 14 August 2024

JOHANNESBURG: White-ball head coach Rob Walter has today named the 15-player squad for the upcoming three-match T20 International (T20I) series against the West Indies, which gets underway later this month in Trinidad and Tobago.

Hollywoodbets Dolphins all-rounder Jason Smith and DP World Lions fast bowler Kwena Maphaka have received their maiden call-ups to the national side.

The hard-hitting middle-order batter Smith, who scored 51 in the 2023/24 CSA T20 Challenge final against the Lions, amassed 291 runs at an average of 41.57 and a strike rate of 134.10 in the competition. His medium pace also adds an extra option in the bowling attack.

The 18-year-old Maphaka, meanwhile, was part of the ICC U19 Men’s World Cup 2024 squad and played a pivotal role in the junior Proteas’ semi-final finish with his Player of the Tournament haul of 21 wickets at an average of 9.71. He also made his domestic T20 debut for the Lions and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League earlier this year.

Lions spinner Nqaba Peter, who made his T20I debut against the West Indies in May, has been ruled out of the series as he is in the final phase of his recovery from a shoulder injury.

Commenting on the squad, Walter said: “Several players were not considered for this series due to either injury, being in a conditioning block that is related to workload management, or their participation in ongoing T20 leagues.

“This tour allows us to continue developing our player pool whilst maintaining the core of experienced players. It will also expose our emerging talent to quality international opposition, similar to the last time we played against the West Indies in May.

“We’re excited to have Jason [Smith] and Kwena [Maphaka] join the squad for this series. Jason’s recent performances have been impressive, and his ability to contribute with both bat and ball adds valuable depth to our line-up.

"Kwena has been identified as a player with significant potential, and this tour presents a great opportunity to include him in the Proteas environment and gain valuable international experience.”

Smith receives maiden Proteas call-up

Durban - Hollywoodbets Dolphins all-rounder Jason Smith received his maiden call-up to the Proteas squad for their T20 International Series against the West Indies starting later this month in the Caribbean.

Smith will join Dolphins seamer Ottniel Baartman has the two Hollywoodbets Dolphins players in the squad for the series.

The batting all-rounder has continued to evolve his game since he joined the Dolphins before the 2021/22 season and his consistent performances in Dolphins colours has led to this selection.

The 29 year-old was a crucial part of the Dolphins squad that made it to the CSA T20 Challenge final last season and made a half century in the final. Smith has also been retained by Durban's Super Giants for the third edition of the SA20 which gets underway in the new year.

Hollywoodbets Dolphins assistant coach Quinton Friend believes that it was only a matter of time before the call came for higher honours.

"This selection is so well deserved and since his move from Cape Town his game has been on an upward curve," Friend said. " .

"It takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get into a position where you can consistently put in match-winning performances.

“We are extremely proud of Jason that he has got this call-up. He’s a fantastic human being and he will definitely be an asset to that Proteas T20 squad.”

CEO of KZN Cricket Heinrich Strydom was extremely excited when Smith joined the Dolphins a few seasons ago and is thrilled the all-rounder's achievements had been recognised by the national team.

"Jason has been a core member of our squad across all formats and has continued to elevate his game since arriving in Durban," Strydom said.

"His performances in white ball cricket and especially the T20 Challenge have been impressive and it's fantastic that he is now in the Proteas mix.

"We wish him, fellow Hollywoodbets Dolphins star Ottniel Baartman, and the Proteas squad all the best for the upcoming series against the West Indies."

The Proteas begin their T20 series against the West Indies on Friday, 23 August .

Hope the pitch for 2nd Test has more life for bowlers - another draw would be crazy !

West Indies vs South Africa, 2nd Test

South Africa have won the toss and have opted to bat

West Indies (Playing XI): Kraigg Brathwaite(c), Mikyle Louis, Keacy Carty, Alick Athanaze, Kavem Hodge, Jason Holder, Joshua Da Silva(w), Gudakesh Motie, Jomel Warrican, Shamar Joseph, Jayden Seales

South Africa (Playing XI): Aiden Markram, Tony de Zorzi, Tristan Stubbs, Temba Bavuma(c), David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne(w), Wiaan Mulder, Keshav Maharaj, Dane Piedt, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi

Beddingham & Stubbs - big pair this - getting 1 be4 lunch would be great for WI

Kyle in , after this Mulder , Piedt , Maharaj .... 1 more be4 lunch & draw gets blown off :)

What a homecoming for Shamar Joseph. People must not forget how inexperienced he is even at FC level.

Had a tough tour of England but the potential is there.

SA have declined massively. Pre-2018 SA sides would have made WTC Finals consistently.

For the people who were writing off West Indies after one bad tour in England, what do you have to say now?

This West Indies side isn't exactly a team of world-beaters, but they have plenty of promising players to build a future around. The win in Brisbane was not a fluke but a look inside what this group of talented, young players is capable of doing.

I hope guys like Shamar Joseph, Alick Athanaze, Kaveem Hodge, Jayden Seales, Mikayle Louis are given consistent chances and are able to establish themselves for West Indies.

A strong West Indies team is good for test cricket.

WI sometimes give the tailenders the time of their lives.

In the 2022 Grenada Test, Jack Leach and Saqib Mahmood put on 90 in 36 overs batting at 10 and 11.
