South Africa tour of West Indies (2024)

Didn't take long for WI to also collapse on this wicket. Brathwaite has been in poor form averaging 18 this year.

Shamar Joseph lights up home Test debut as 17 wickets fall on opening day in Guyana

Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales put together a pace bowling masterclass in Guyana to bowl South Africa out for 160, before the Proteas fought back in the final session to have the hosts on the ropes.

A total of 17 wickets fell on an absorbing opening day in Guyana as the West Indies and South Africa traded blows to leave the second match of their Test series wide open.

Joseph and Seales combined for eight wickets to help dismiss South Africa for just 160, but the hosts' top-order failed to capitalise as they were reduced to 56/6 in reply late on the opening day.

Veteran all-rounder Jason Holder (33*) led a late fightback as the West Indies went to stumps at 97/7 and still 63 runs adrift of South Africa's score from the first innings.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss in the second match of the ICC World Test Championship series, South Africa were left reeling by sizzling spells of fast bowling from Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales.

The latter began proceedings with a cracking inswinger to send Tony de Zorzi's stumps cartwheeling, but it was Joseph whose third over really put West Indies on top.

Joseph struck twice in an over to send back Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma and the visitors were reduced to 20/3.

David Bedingham and Tristan Stubbs staged a recovery for South Africa with a carefully built stand, but Jason Holder produced the breakthrough by forcing an outside edge with a wider delivery to Stubbs.

Joseph returned after the lunch break to account for Bedingham and Wiaan Mulder followed next over with Seales finding his outside edge.

Joseph took a fourth by cleaning up Keshav Maharaj and Seales added his third with the wicket of Kagiso Rabada. Joseph completed his third five-wicket haul in Test cricket with the key wicket of Kyle Verreynne with the visitors yet to reach triple figures.

South Africa were eventually bowled out for 160, one of their lowest scores in Test cricket against the West Indies.

Last year in Centurion, South Africa were bowled out for 116 against the Windies, their lowest total in Tests against them.

Wiaan Mulder (4/18) led a superb fightback in the final session to help South Africa reduce the West Indies to 97/7 at stumps and leave the game in the balance after one exciting day.

For the people who were writing off West Indies after one bad tour in England, what do you have to say now?

This West Indies side isn't exactly a team of world-beaters, but they have plenty of promising players to build a future around. The win in Brisbane was not a fluke but a look inside what this group of talented, young players is capable of doing.

I hope guys like Shamar Joseph, Alick Athanaze, Kaveem Hodge, Jayden Seales, Mikayle Louis are given consistent chances and are able to establish themselves for West Indies.

A strong West Indies team is good for test cricket.
Brother you said this even during England tour and then England went on to destroy West Indies 3-0 by big margins.

This West Indies side is talented but these guys are not good enough to turn the tide against 3 decades of mediocrity in Test cricket.

There is nothing different compared to any mediocre Windies side since 1997.

They win a couple here and there and that's about it

I never said they were a great side. And not everything has to be analyzed from the perspective of wins and losses. A team that is this inexperienced will obviously take time to find their groove. But the talent is there. And the skill-level will only be sharpened by playing more test cricket. This West Indies side is different from the ones we have been seeing in recent years and in time they will start to show that more regularly.

Also, this test match is not over yet.

Action in the West Indies is underway

The Proteas are bowling and lead by 63 runs on the start of day two.

20 wickets have already fallen, but South Africa's openers didn't add to that tally as we head into lunch on day two!

Windies have a good bowling attack but the batting lineup is simply not test standard.

They should play one more batsman and Holder can bat at 7.

South Africa have an excellent bowling attack but their batting lineup is barely test standard.

UPDATE:

The start of day 3 of the 2nd Test between West Indies and South Africa at Guyana National Stadium has been delayed due to rain.

There will be an inspection at 10:00 (16:00 CAT).

West Indies bowlers fight back to bowl South Africa out in the first session

Can they chase the target down to win the Test series?

South Africa have this in the bag. Windies have decent bowling attack but batting ensures that they remain tagged as "minnows".

Brathwaite all at sea against Rabada. He's got to somehow survive so that the inexperienced middle order aren't exposed to the new ball.

He will need to bat for most of the runs

All at sea but hanging on. I don't have confidence on the West Indies middle and lower older. 1 wicket will turn to 8 in quick time.

Braithwaite needs to stay for a very long time no matter how ugly it looks.

Captain gone and that's a big blow. WI are one of those teams where 50-1 can easily become 100 all out especially on this surface that's still assisting bowlers on Day 3.

keeping low , swing & seam only with new cherry now .... 61/2

Oh my an overstep. Now can these bozos take advantage ??

Game is on balance.

Windies need 164 more runs. SA need 6 more wickets.

Can go either way.

Will be tough from here but holder and de Silva ( still to come) are probably the West Indies two best batsmen.

Rabada has 298 Test wickets now. Can he reach 300 wickets in this Test? Good opportunity.

It's the hope that kills you. Wouldn't be relying on the tail if the specialist batters did their jobs.

South Africa won the 2nd Test by 40 runs against West Indies.

Proteas earn crucial World Test Championship points with West Indies win

South Africa recorded their second win in the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25.

South Africa sealed a 1-0 series victory after a closely fought contest in Guyana that finished on the third day with a 40-run win over West Indies.

Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada’s three wickets apiece in the second innings overshadowed Jayden Seales’ career-best efforts of 6/41 earlier in the day.

The morning began with South Africa resuming play on 223/5 with Kyle Verreynne and Wiaan Mulder on the crease who had put together a solid partnership on day two. West Indies, however, came back strongly.

Jomel Warrican sparked an implosion in the South Africa batting lineup, dismissing Mulder leg-before wicket for 34 in the opening over of the day.

Soon, Seales followed with his end to send Maharaj, Verreynne and Burger back to the dressing room, completing his six-wicket haul. Proteas went from 223/5 to 246 all out, setting West Indies a target of 263 runs.

West Indies looked in the mood to chase the total with a cautious start of 54/1. As the hosts started to command, Mulder’s two-wicket spell changed the course of the match once again. First, he trapped Kraigg Brathwaite in front for 25 and then cleaned up Keacy Carty for 17.

Rabada and off-spinner Dane Piedt took up the task of dismantling the West Indies middle order, reducing them to 104/6. Gudakesh Motie and Warrican were left to rebuild.

The West Indies duo stitched a counter-attacking 77-run partnership — their highest of the match — that refuelled their flames of hope. Maharaj flew back like a gusty wind.

The left-arm off-spinner Maharaj, who was wicketless so far in the second innings, removed the two set batters trapped leg-before wicket. West Indies now needed 81 runs with two wickets in hand.

Then, Rabada removed Shamar Joseph and Maharaj completed the Test win for South Africa with Seales’ wicket, securing their 10th consecutive Test series win against West Indies.

In the process, Maharaj became South Africa’s most prolific Test spinner with 171 wickets. His 13 wickets on the tour also earned him the Player of the Series award.

The win has helped South Africa jump two places, from seventh to fifth, on the World Test Championship standings while pushing Pakistan and England a place down each. West Indies continue to remain at the bottom of the table with one win in nine WTC matches.

It was a great game and a great series.

This is South Africa's 10th Test series win in a row against West Indies.

West Indies did fine but a defeat is a defeat. Losing at home has no excuses.

Great series ? This pitch was rubbish and heavily favoured Windies and they still couldn't pull it off.

This would easily have been another whitewash if not for rain.

West Indies Test cricket is at its lowest ebb. They only have 77 points in the rankings.

Have they ever been this bad? I don't think so.

Superb bowling from Seales and Shamar but the batting proved to be their downfall. Should have won this game but the pitch I guess was not suitable for the batter but it was their home ground.

South Africa and West Indies have never had a drawn Test series.

These two sides have played 11 Test series overall. West Indies won the first one back in 1992. After that, South Africa won all (10 in a row).

wicket is looking difficult.. anything around 140 would be difficult to chase for WI

West Indies pulled off the highest successful chase in T20 history at the Brian Lara Academy in Tarouba, securing a series lead against South Africa in the first of three matches at this venue.

After opting to bowl first, just moments before heavy rain delayed the start by an hour, West Indies quickly took control by reducing South Africa to 42 for 5 after 8 overs. South Africa managed a recovery thanks to a sixth-wicket partnership of 71 runs off 50 balls between Patrick Kruger and Tristan Stubbs. Stubbs then combined with Bjorn Fortuin for a seventh-wicket stand of 60 off 25 balls, providing the innings with much-needed acceleration. Matthew Forde, playing in just his third T20I, matched his career-best figures with 3 for 27.

In response, West Indies remained in control of the chase throughout. Shai Hope and Alick Athanaze set the tone with an opening stand of 84 off 49 balls. Hope then joined forces with Nicholas Pooran for a 54-run partnership off 33 balls, effectively dismantling the target. Pooran was particularly ruthless against South Africa’s inexperienced attack, scoring his fastest T20I fifty off just 20 balls and finishing unbeaten on 65 off 26.

With key bowlers missing, including Lungi Ngidi who was ruled out of the series with a calf strain, South Africa's depth was tested. They fielded their youngest-ever debutant, Kwena Maphaka, at 18 years and 137 days old. Maphaka claimed his first international wicket by dismissing West Indies captain Rovman Powell, who was caught at extra cover. However, by that point, West Indies needed just three runs to win, and Roston Chase sealed the victory with a four off the next ball. West Indies won the match with 13 balls to spare.

Powell's decision to bowl first paid off almost immediately. After a tight three-run opening over from Akeal Hosein, Forde made the first breakthrough as Ryan Rickelton attempted to cut a short, wide ball but only managed to edge it to Pooran. Aiden Markram showed some resistance with a reverse sweep and a pull shot off Hosein but was caught by Gudakesh Motie off Forde. Two balls later, Reeza Hendricks got a leading edge off Shamar Joseph's first delivery, sending the ball to Hosein at deep third. Hendricks continued his poor form, having passed 20 in only two of his last 11 T20I innings. South Africa struggled through the powerplay, finishing on 33 for 3. Rassie van der Dussen was strangled down the leg side as soon as the fielding restrictions were lifted, giving Joseph his second wicket.

South Africa found themselves in deep trouble at 42 for 5 after eight overs, with all their recognized batters, except Stubbs, back in the dugout. Stubbs initially played cautiously, scoring just 13 runs off his first 16 balls. His first aggressive shot came when he hit Motie for the biggest six of the innings over long-on. After Kruger's dismissal, Stubbs took control. He hit Forde for successive fours off full deliveries and reached his fifty off 33 balls with a shot over cover point off Joseph. Stubbs added 23 more runs off the last six balls he faced before being caught at long-on on the penultimate ball of the innings. Despite his dismissal, Stubbs had lifted South Africa to a competitive total of 174.

It took West Indies ten deliveries to find their first boundary, but once they did, the runs flowed. Athanaze, opening in his second T20I, swept Fortuin over long leg for a six, and Hope followed up by sending Ottneil Baartman over long-off and deep backward square leg. The real damage was done in the fifth over, where Athanaze plundered 20 runs off Nandre Burger, including two sixes and a classy late cut for four. South Africa was forced to use a fifth bowler within the powerplay as Markram bowled himself but proved even more expensive, conceding 21 runs in his opening over. Hope contributed 16 of those runs, including two powerful sixes, as West Indies completed an impressive 75-run powerplay.

With 70 runs needed off 54 balls, Pooran saw an opportunity to finish the game quickly when Burger returned in the 12th over. After Hope rotated the strike, Burger bowled a slower delivery, which Pooran smashed over long-off for a 77-meter six. The next delivery, another slower ball, was a full toss that Pooran sent over midwicket into the stands. The following two balls, faster but still full, were dispatched down the ground for two more sixes. This onslaught reduced the equation to 45 runs needed off 48 balls. Although West Indies lost a couple of wickets, they comfortably reached the target in the end.

Real disappointment for Windies should be not making semis of World T20.

No excuse for that.

Getting whitewashed/beaten by top sides in Test cricket should not bother them at all
