Sony has launched the PlayStation 5 (PS5) at an online event ahead of its release later this year.

In the pre-recorded event, the Japanese tech company revealed two versions of the console, a standard PS5 and the PS5 Digital Edition, which appears not to have a disc drive.

Sony also showed fans the PS5's new haptic controller, HD camera, pulse 3D wireless headset, media remote and dual charging station.

It comes seven years after the launch of the PS4.

Some of the PS5 games had already been announced, including Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Fortnite and Destiny 2.

Others include Spider-Man: Miles Morales and a new Ratchet & Clank title called Rift Apart, in which the duo travel through different dimensions.

The launch event also showed trailers for Gran Turismo 7, Oddworld Soulstorm, Hitman 3, Resident Evil Village, Horizon: Forbidden West, Sackboy: A Big Adventure and NBA 2K21.
The PS5 will be competing directly with Microsoft's new Xbox Series X console.

Jim Ryan, president and chief executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said: "With PlayStation 5, we are making a significant leap to deliver a truly new generation of transformative play experiences that will redefine expectations for what games can be.

"Worlds will be richer and more beautiful, they'll captivate your senses in ways you didn't think possible, and you'll be able to experience them much more seamlessly, with lightning fast loading.

"Today's showcase is just a glimpse of what's to come in the next generation, and we want to thank our community for taking this journey to PS5's launch with us."

Sony says the PS5 will be released this winter but has not revealed any pricing details.

I’m excited but I’m more excited for The Last of Us 2 especially after the reviews that just came out. Can’t wait

It looks terrible aesthetically speaking. I was going to buy it for the new Blu Ray Player but not going to now.

i would say, that you are better off buying a gaming PC than a PS5.
You can get better graphics and better FPS, and a pc can be used for educational purposes.

The market for gaming consoles has diminished as PCs became easier to assemble.

However, gaming consoles are more for the casual gamer who wants to play on the big screen. Due to this though, they shouldn't price them too high otherwise one is better off buying a PC.

You pay for what it can do - it's still cheaper to buy a console rather than a standalone 4K Blu Ray player

Going to be hard to keep that console safe from toddlers.

I like the new futuristic design - there are always negative complaints when a console is first revealed - it will grow on people - the XBOX SERIES X design is just.....boring.

The amount of games on show last night was impressive. I will certainly be purchasing.

Disagree - may be easier to build but price for building one is high - build one today & it will be out of date in 1-2yrs. I was a avid PC gamer but have not played on PC for around 10yrs.

Looks really nice, i havent bought a console since ps3- came out of gaming

they have completely copied the xbox controller

disagree- you can buy a nvidia rtx2070 super for good value- this easily games avove 100 frames per second on all games- at high settings- 2070super generally games at 120+fps

Better off investing in a 2080ti tbh

The new 3000 series graphics cards are coming this year -

You are not getting PC equivalent for the same price as a PS5.

Try building a PC with the same specs as a 400-500 pound PS5. lets see how much it costs you.

PS5 has an 8 core Ryzen 3700 and a 5700xt GPU.

16gb GDDR6 ram and an SSD which is currently unavailable on the PC market.

You are looking at paying around 300 pounds just for the Ryzen 3700 and motherboard. 400 pounds for a 5700xt. 70-80 pounds for the ram. Thats 800 pounds just for 3 components. Havent included the PSU, SSD etc.

I was a huge PC gamer in the past because they were always games on it which were unavailable on consoles. Not the case now. Why pay more for the same specs, less convenience and less exclusive games?

Spot on.

Plus I dont know of any PC gamer that has their PC hooked up to TVs over 70”

On top of this PC games, are buggy as hell, with all the various vendors used to build a spec.

Pound for pound a console wins hands down every time.

It looks absolutely beautiful. I hope they release it in black as well. The white would look worn out in a few months.

To quote a YouTube comment, PS5 looks like what a future console concept would have looked like 15 years ago.

I wish the console would have come with some sort of wireless charging mechanism for the controllers, where you could place and charge your controllers in rest mode when you are not playing.

Heard somewhere that there will be no CD port, so would that mean all games must be purchased and downloaded from the PS Store?

I have been using a carrot and stick situation with Playstation since PS2 to make myself think like "if i achieve this i would buy it" and it has continued to PS5 now lol.

Personally I got back to gaming during lockdown on PC to play uplay anno 1800 and it was great(loved RTS as a kid) but then i was playing complete nights and realized as an adult it was an absolutely a waste of time.(just my opinion).

i understand its cheaper to pay for the console, but the thing is with a p.c - its designed for work use.

Ive just bought a 2nd hand laptop - gigaybyte aero 15- oled - Intel i9-10980HK- nvidia 2070 super - 32gb ram - costs me £2600- guy who i bought it off prefers the new mac 16inch, laptop only came out 6 weeks ago in shops for £2900- no wear or tear.

This laptop is gaming amazingly - should easily last me for the next 7-10yrs - replaced lenova w520 thinkpad

There are 2 versions.

One which plays discs and one which is digital only.

Thats because generally the larger tv display response time is slow around 14+ms - gamers generally have a 27-35inch gaming monitor which has between 1-3ms

People who use p.c -especially with the higher specs - will be doing graphics design work - which obviously consoles cannot do - so no point buying a console - al games are available on the p.c

Well i could buy ps5 for gaming and a laptop for work use only and it still wouldn't cost me 2600 pounds. You can get a work laptop for 500 pounds and another 500 for a ps5.

A games console is design to last a generation which is 6-7 years. So will the laptop for work use.

Wireless charging takes along time - gamers would like this - it will be available in the future - when the mobile phone industry developed this. Currently wired the way to go

Yes exactly.

You pay more for the same specs, the games are less optimised and you have less games available.

No one in their right mind will purchase a pc over a games console in 2020.

15-20 years ago it was understandable with PCs being way more powerful than consoles, exclusive games simply not available on consoles and online gaming.

A games console is design to last a generation which is 6-7 years. So will the laptop for work use.

u cant do gaming on a £500 laptop or even p.c- will be really slow the new mac 16 pro and dell 15 xps - have just came out and they cost £2000- they both only have a 1060 ti graphics card which can only game DECENT at medium level - 60-80 frames per second.

People who do graphics design work - require a laptop which min costs £2000 - if they want to game properly then its £2600-£3200 for laptops

We are discussing gaming here. You have now brought up work and graphics designing.

Like i said no one in their right mind will pick a pc over a console for Gaming Only.

Let alone a laptop. Desktop is always superior.

Plenty of people game on a pc/ laptop- thats why laptops like the razor blade 15 sells out, since the last console - pc/ laptop gaming is getting more popular - as for the above reasons ive mentioned.

Its not getting more popular. Its the other way round.

More people are switching to console than the other way. 20 million pc gamers are projected to shift to consoles in the next couple of years.

PC gaming has been declining for years for many reasons.

Cost being one reason.
Lack of exclusive games.
Piracy.
Console being FAR more easier and convenient to use.

that was the case around when ps3 came out - since past 5 yrs- pc coming back due to the better cpu/gpu

heard yotubers like linus - jaystwocents - mathew moniz stating this

anyway lets go back to topic

I have used Xbox One and Xbox 360 at home. Never owned a PS console.

I hope to buy PS5. Looking good.

Ahhhh... I see the never ending PC vs console debate raging here.

I’ll tell you i have been witness to it for nearly 20 years and it doesn’t get you anywhere. Hardcore gamers are better off with PCs. No compatibility issues and your game library stays the same.. upgrading is easy ... usually you just need to upgrade the GPU. All in all a decent PC can last you 10-12 years easy with GPU upgrades.

Consoles are now arriving every 4 years. They are underpowered compared to PCs. So frequent upgrades if you want the latest and lower output.

But here’s the deal.. have you tried hooking up your PC to the family living room so everybody can play games? It’s a pain! The updates, the this and that, controller mappings.. blah blah blah.

I now prefer consoles.. Xbox is great. This PS sounds great too.. looks ugly AF though.. and the ugly white!! I expected Sony to do better.. aesthetically speaking they always do better than Microsoft.

The majority of players dont care about the delay between machine and screen. Sure the purists care, but there's a reason why consoles are sold in the 100s of millions.

As for power. PS3 is more powerful than most PCs because it is RISC based. It's more powerful than the PS5 in terms of pure computational power. It's why the US DoD have 1000s of PS3s setup in an array for pure computational power. Seti and DNA sequencing are decoded using PS3s too. If you were to build a PC at the same spec as a PS3, you are talking 10000s of dollars.

The winner is the one that ends up in the living room, and most people prefer the convience.

It’s not true.. while it’s true it has the computational capability, it never produced that output.. and a similarly specced PC will not cost 10,000 dollars. That’s a fabrication.

The air force uses them in an array because they are cheaper yes, but they have very specific programming involved to get a decent output.

Excerpt : The Condor Cluster project began four years ago, when PlayStation consoles cost about $400 each. At the same time, comparable technology would have cost about $10,000 per unit. Overall, the PS3s for the supercomputer's core cost about $2 million. According to AFRL Director of High Power Computing Mark Barnell, that cost is about 5-10% of the cost of an equivalent system built with off-the-shelf computer parts.

Look up RISC vs CISC. Once you understand the arcitecture you will understand the power of the PS3. There is no fabrication.

I am an engineer by profession and I am well aware of the hardware architectures involved and I am also aware of the expected output and the programming nuance involved in RISC based hardware and how it’s so hard which is why the expected output is usually never as good as promised.

That being said, the link you posted is from 2010. And within the link the statement you are referring to is clear that “4 years ago”, a comparable PC would have cost 10,000.

So are we living in 2006? Is my question to you...

Today in 2020, that statement is no longer true. In fact in terms of output, Nintendo switch is more powerful than a PS3.

Today in 2020, that statement is no longer true. In fact in terms of output, Nintendo switch is more powerful than a PS3.

Semantics. The article backs my claim which you said was untrue.

You might be an engineer, but my bet is you heard of RISC today.

RISC still remains more powerful than CISC even today, this goes for the PS3 too. Given the reduced instruction set, less power is consumed too, about 80%.

Side fact : Microsoft closed the market gap between Xbox and PS3 because x86 programmers couldn't code for RISC. It was a nightmare, hence CISC based Xbox had more exclusives during the PS3 life cycle because PC coders understood the Xbox architecture. This is why Sony ditched RISC, and opted for CISC with PS4, and PS5. Now you also know why PS3 games are not compatible with any other PS console.

PS5 SSD architecture has clocked 2Gb/s transfer in 0.25 seconds.

If any of you watched the PS5 announcement yesterday, the Hatchet and Crank demo was more about load times than graphics. The different worlds you were seeing were loaded in real time; opposed to HDD tech today, you's be seeing either a load screen/cut scene while the next world loads.

PS5 GPU can perform 10.28 TFLOP calculations. How much would it cost to build a PC just to match this figure?

Hahahah semantics.. that’s funny!

You buy any piece of electronics in 2006, I would like to know how well it retains its value. Not just talking about gaming consoles or PCs, I am talking about any gadget.. just pick one and prove to me that it will hold its value. And computers are by far the most depreciating electronic products of them all.
I am sorry if you feel embarrassed at being proven wrong but it’s true. Your logic is flawed.
I would like to know if you have ever programmed a micro controller in your life or have any experience with embedded systems.

If you do, then you would never tell anyone who is an engineer that they don’t know about RISC.

Oh boy. That's what you call a PC meltdown: literally.

PC gaming has 2 plus points.

1. Customisation. The idea of being able to customise every aspect of a PC setup from the ceramic paste between the CPU socket and the heat sink, to the type of cooling, memory, hardrive , CPU, GPU, drives, etc is 100% appealing and fascinating. BUT it's costly and high maintenance. Been there done that got many T-shirts.

2. Keyboard and Mouse. Consoles can boast the most amazing power and graphics, but one aspect where consoles flop is input control devices. All the best CoD, Fortnite, RDR2 etc players are PC gamers. I loved playing Sim City series on PC, but many have tried and failed to create the same control and accuracy on consoles.

But these 2 points are more for gaming purists.

Really don’t see the point of investing in gaming PCs instead of consoles which exist for a reason.

I am not denying that customizing a high end gaming PC would probably produce better graphics, but would it be worth the effort, time, money? I highly doubt so.

I bought my PS4 in December 2013 and it has given me zero problems. I am quite amazed by the fact that I didn’t even need to service it once. Amazing machine.

Wireless charging is rumoured. There was only one USB port spotted on the front of the PS5, so chances are we could see wireless charging.

Convinience. No more updating device drivers for every single hardware component. No more vendor incompatibility issue. No high BP when booting up. On with consoles, it just works.

Though I do miss the days of building PCs. The best way to learn. Would do it all over again if I was younger.

I'm a hardcore gamer and I say you are better having consoles since they have more support in terms of games library. Still have a powerful PC but its collecting dust.

Not sure where you get the underpowered console information from. The XSX has a 12TF GPU on par with a 2080ti and the PS5 has a GPU on par with the 5700xt.

The CPUs are equivalent to the 8 core Ryzen 3700.

That is NOT underpowered and if anything the vast majority of PC gamers will have nothing close to those specs in their PCs.

Aside from the graphical aspects of things one of the arguments I hear is that you need to pay to play online games for PS4. Which is true. However you get a chance to get free games each month. These games can cost easily 20+ dollars. So getting a chance to get them free is awesome.

Another thing I don’t see mentioned here which to me matters most is that consoles actually get exclusive titles, that you cannot get on pc. So even if you have a pretty looking pc with a top notch graphics card. You won’t probably get to play a game that your friends are into unless you get the said console.

thing is that im not a pc gamer and never have been - bought the amstrad to amega 600 /PS1 / PS2/ PS3- then i gave it to my nephew 6yrs ago-never gamed after.

I have now bought a good laptop - i do like the laptop for everything

depends on the game your playing, dont need a gaming monitor for any football game or even resident evil / final fantasy, gaming monitors are required for first person shooters - well imo

yeh, is it correct that thr ssd is a gen type 4, thought my laptop ssd was fast as it has a gen type 2

the exclusive games for ps over p.c isnt really great:

God of War. God of War. Sony.
Spider-Man. Spider-Man. Sony. ...
Bloodborne. Bloodborne. Sony. ...
Horizon Zero Dawn. Horizon Zero Dawn. ...
Uncharted 4. Uncharted 4. ...
Persona 5. Persona 5. ...
The Last of Us (Remastered) The Last of Us. ...
Shadow of the Colossus (Remastered) Shadow of the Colossus.

I'm a hardcore gamer and I say you are better having consoles since they have more support in terms of games library. Still have a powerful PC but its collecting dust.

r u sure, on the p.c you can buy most of the games and you have steam.

i will say that first person shooter-playing online is way better on the p.c.

I would like to add to this. When I said exclusives I did not just mean Playstation. I included all consoles. Which means Nintendo as well.

never played super mario in my lifetime.

anyway back to topic, they haven't released the price or even the month it will be released.

Ive read it supports 8k gaming - sounds great, but no game developer will create a game for 8k.

im assuming it has wifi 6

never played any of them, imo i would prefer the better experience of online

I played majority of them on that list. The ones I played did not really require me to have online. When it comes to having decent online experience it does not matter to me much unless I am playing fighting games. Even than I can simply make it better with a ethernet cable. The exclusives I played for PS4 were all great. It is why I continue to support this console franchise.

I play Nintendo for Pokemon and Super Smash. There Zelda games are nice too. But ya those two franchises are enough for me to buy a Nintendo console. Not to mention how party friendly there games are.

Speaking of exclusives I am hyped for the new Spiderman game that is releasing on PS5, Spiderman Miles Morales. The last game they made was easily my most favorite Spiderman game of all time. This one is coming in with momentum of the last one. Should be interesting buy.

Disagree - may be easier to build but price for building one is high - build one today & it will be out of date in 1-2yrs. I was a avid PC gamer but have not played on PC for around 10yrs.

But you can continue upgrading PCs. If you go for higher end specifications, they are likely to last for 3-4 years. In regards to gaming PCs, recent graphics card such as the RTX are likely to be usable for quite some time and all the new tech that does come out does not require one to update immediately if they don't have a need, e.g. Ray tracing.

Typically consoles are underpowered, the new gen ones could be an exception. But historically speaking PC are much more powered Than consoles..

In the past I have always bought consoles 6+ months after release but I will be getting the PS5 on release. Backwards compatibility is a big reason for this

I usually wait for the mid-gen upgrade, so I'll be sitting tight for the next 3 years lol.

By then some of the exclusives will be very cheap, but I'm very excited for the PS5. I have a gaming PC and a Sony console purely for the exclusives.

PS5 & XBOX Series X are already 1-2yrs behind PC tech I read somewhere

It’s beautiful.

Can’t wait to play FIFA, GTA and COD on it.

I play FIFA and GTA. They are going to be incredible on PS5.

I hope the rumors are true and they release RDR2 on PS5.

Absolutely there is no doubt about FIFA and GTA being incredible on PS5.

RDDR2 is such a great game and it will become even better if they release it on PS5.

The graphics of all these games will be amazing!

The market for gaming consoles has diminished as PCs became easier to assemble.

However, gaming consoles are more for the casual gamer who wants to play on the big screen. Due to this though, they shouldn't price them too high otherwise one is better off buying a PC.

you can connect your pc or laptop to a projector. if you have the $$ to spend.

Yes and always much more expensive even if you want to build something of equal spec to a console.

Ps5 is rumored to be around 400-500.

The gpu and cpu within it are the 5700xt and Ryzen 3700.

Just those alone cost 700 pounds. Not including ram, motherboard etc.

Rockstar are rumoured to release a complete remastered RDR1 within RDR2. New Austin state in RDR2 is the entire RDR1 map. Though saying this Rockstar have been kind to the GTA community with online content, RDR2 crowd haven't seen any new content since Dec 19.

RDR2 is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful looking games. I play on a PS4 Pro, on a Samsung QLED 75". The visuals are breathtaking. I'm on day 96 of my online streak. Been online since lockdown started!

I agree I finished its storyline and it was absolutely mesmerizing! Great game.

Thing is with ray tracing -frame rates dropped a lot- goes way down to 45-65, most games on average are in the mids 40 mark and thats with a rtx 2080 with high settings

I have been gaming on Playstation since PS1 however the PS4 was the biggest flop in my opinion. Two reasons:

1. It's awfully loud
2. Unlike PS1, PS2 and PS3 - when the PS4 had launched, it was miles behind current PC technology at the time. I was disgusted by the native graphics (at 720p) and frame rate of 30fps.

Having said that I share the same enthusiasm you have for the PS5. This will be on par with high-end gaming PCs.

I'm also a big fan of open world games especially GTA and RDR. Rockstar have done a superb job with those franchises. But I'm getting sick of waiting for GTA 6. It's been a 7 year wait already.

If you haven't already done so, I also recommend giving Call of Duty: Warzone a go as well. It's a free download.

Can you explain what this means?

Will I be able to play FIFA20 online with my friends who have PS4?

They could have released it a bit earlier (October) and really rake in the economy that has been dented throughout the world. Everyone would buy a PS5 in lockdown I think

It will depend upon the game and upto 4000 as per sony is working on but it will not be as smooth as people think so.
