PM Imran wants to follow China, wishes he had power to lock up 500 powerful Pakistanis for corruption

BEIJING: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday said corruption was one of the biggest impediments to investments coming into the country.

Addressing the China Council for Promotion of International Trade, PM Imran said the government was committed to providing an investor-friendly environment.

Hailing the economic progress made by China, the prime minister said the way it [China]has lifted seven hundred million people out of poverty in the last thirty years was an example for the whole world.

He also appreciated President Xi Jinping's campaign against corruption.

“One of President’s Xi’s crusades has been against corruption and from I hear that some 400 ministerial-level people in the last five years have been convicted of corruption and put behind jail,” PM Imran said.

He continued, “This is important not only for Pakistan but for most of the developing world because corruption stops investment. Corruption is one of the biggest impediments to the investments coming into your country.”

“Firms will invest in economies that are cleaner,” the prime minister said.

“I wish I could follow President Xi’s example and put 500 corrupt people in Pakistan in jail,” PM Imran lamented.

The prime minister also invited the Chinese companies to invest in the diverse sectors of Pakistan including housing, textile, manufacturing, IT and financial services, physical and technological logistics, agriculture, oil and gas and tourism and hospitality.

He added, “Pakistan is opening up for the businesses and it was a great time for the Chinese companies to invest in the country.”

Assuring the participants that the prime minister’s office will be dealing with all the major investments, PM Imran said all CPEC related investments will also be dealt from the PM office in order to remove all the hurdles in the way of investors.

He added Pakistan was encouraging the businesses to make big profits as the wealth creation will enable us to lift the people out of poverty on the pattern of China.

Speaking about Gawadar, the prime minister said Gwadar smart port city master plan has been approved. "Work on Gwadar airport is in progress and it will be completed soon," PM Imran said, "We are now especially concentrating on our Special Economic Zones."

The premier further said Pakistan was encouraging businesses to make big profits as the wealth creation will enable us to lift the people out of poverty on the pattern of China.

He added the present government has also liberalized the visa regime so that the Chinese can get the visas on arrival at the airport. "This facility has been extended to many other countries as well," he noted.

Alluding to the geo-strategic location of Pakistan, the prime minister said Pakistan's unique location and its young and vibrant population makes it the attractive country for investment.

"Our labour cost is only about twenty per cent of what is in China. Our government has taken a conscious decision to ensure ease of doing business. Pakistan has made the biggest strides in ease of doing business in the world," he said.

Both Chinese leaders will separately host banquets in honour of the prime minister. A number of agreements and MoUs are expected to be signed at a ceremony to be witnessed by the two prime ministers.

PM Imran also held a series of meetings with representatives of Chinese companies in Beijing and invited them to invest in Pakistan.

So Khalifa Imran told the Chinese businessmen that we are a corrupt nation and he wishes that he had the power to put an end to it. However, since he doesn’t have the power, he has failed to eradicate it.

Furthermore, in the next breath, he tells them to invest heavily in our country. If I were a Chinese businessman, I wouldn’t.

He thinks everyone is foolish like his gullible supporters who will lap it up when he contradicts himself in one minute.

Chinese thrive in trade with countries where corruption is rampant, gives them a lot of influence in the country’s trade and foreign policies.

As a Chinese businessman I would without thinking because my country would back me up in dealing with the corrupt.

I back Imran in most things but appalled he can’t speak up for the Chinese Muslims.

But you said he was a fascist dictator who is also a puppet which would be a world 1st. You seem more confused by the day.

Lol.

Talking about not following the law and put them behind the bar forever.

If you are going to attempt to insult “The Cult” then at least try in a way that doesn’t make you look like an ignorant person because that defeat the purpose of your struggle in presenting yourself as the only genius Pakistani and savior of ignorant Pakistanis.

Pakistan should start developing good relations with all countries especially developed nations and open up to foreign investments. This over reliance on China for everything is not healthy in the long run.

Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chinese President Xi Jinping met on Wednesday to discuss bilateral relations, the regional situation and other matters of mutual interest, Radio Pakistan reported.

Earlier, PM Office had said that while in China, the premier would discuss the security situation in the disputed region of Kashmir and economic ties with the Chinese leadership as part of PM Imran's two-day visit to Beijing.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, while referring to the Kashmir situation, on Tuesday said that the two countries have shared a joint strategy since India moved to revoke Article 370. He said that when Prime Minister Imran had spoken at the United Nations General Assembly, the Chinese state council in his statement had also mentioned Kashmir and expressed his concern.

Qureshi also spoke briefly about President Xi's upcoming "brief, informal" visit to India.

"It was his desire and ours to take each other into confidence [ahead of the visit]," the foreign minister shared, adding that once the visit concludes, the Chinese leadership will keep Pakistan fully informed.

"The nature of our relations is such that we take each other into confidence at every step," Qureshi said.

Qureshi said they were grateful for the invitation, adding that Prime Minister Imran had extended a counter invitation to his Chinese counterpart, Li Keqiang, to visit Pakistan and would also extend an invitation to President Xi.

He shared that this was the premier's third visit to China in 13 months and Pakistan wanted to reciprocate the hospitality they had received to the Chinese leadership.

On Tuesday, the prime minister had met with Premier Li during which the two exchanged views on bilateral trade and economic partnership, and explored ways of increasing Pakistan’s exports to China.

According to a PM Office press release, both the leaders agreed that the implementation of the second phase of China-Pakistan Free Trade Agreement (FTA) would lead to more trade, economic and investment opportunities between the two countries. Other areas of potential collaboration discussed in the meeting included railways, steel, oil and gas, industry and science and technology.

Prime Minister Imran also held a series of meetings with the heads of major groups of companies in China dealing in oil and gas, mining, iron and steel, textile, power and energy sectors and invited them to invest in Pakistan.

Qureshi said that various memoranda of understanding (MoUs) had been signed, including in the education sector, for a desalination plant, one for disabled persons and one for narcotics control.

The prime minister had addressed the China Council for Promotion of International Trade after his arrival in Beijing, during which he expressed his desire to put 500 corrupt people in Pakistan behind bars, "just as President Xi had done", to rid the country of corruption that he said was "one of the biggest impediments to investment".

He doesn’t care about them just like he doesn’t care about Kashmir, but he has to speak about the latter because of political reasons and more importantly, the dictations of the military establishment.

To be fair, Imran has made serious progress in healing Pakistan’s strained relations with the US. We also have much better relations with Turkey and Malaysia now.

China does give us the technology and the investment that we desperately need, but still, it’s scary how much we’ve come to rely on China in the last couple of years.

He doesn’t care about them just like he doesn’t care about Kashmir, but he has to speak about the latter because of political reasons and more importantly, the dictations of the military establishment.
It seems that way, at least about the Chinese Muslims as not even a mention of them or even in the Pakistan media. Disgraceful.

He should be studied by many actors.

People forget nothing happens unless the USA gives it attention. They already oppose Xinjiang concentration camps. The Kashmir issue wasnt international till Imran made into one. So him mentioning Xinjiang wont add anything to the conversation. The USA is the superpower that controls the narrative.

lol. You call for bombing of Pakistani schoolchildren. So please stop with this fake concern for anyone in China.

I hope Imran discusses purchasing of some of Chinas new toys esp the hypersonic missiles which will mean Indias s-400 is of no use to them.
