Prime Minister Imran Khan has tested positive for the novel coronavirus, Dr Faisal Sultan, his aide on health, confirmed on Twitter.

The news comes two days after the premier received his first shot of the Covid-19 vaccine. His diagnosis was also later confirmed by the Prime Minister's Office.

At the time he had appealed to the nation to ensure compliance with all standard operating procedures (SOPs) to prevent the spread of Covid-19 amid an intensifying third wave, his office quoted him as saying.

Yesterday, the premier had visited Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where he toured Malakand University, inaugurated a new academic block and addressed a gathering of students.

He had also visited the Swat Motorway, where he inaugurated the Swat Expressway Tunnels.

Soon after the news broke of his diagnosis, Twitter began flooding with a host of messages from politicians, celebrities and citizens, wishing him a speedy recovery. Within a couple of minutes, #ImranKhan became the top trend on the social media website.

Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry said: "The people are Pakistan are praying for their beloved leader. May God return him to good health soon."

Is this the second time he has now had covid ?

May allah give him shifa

Is this the second time he has now had covid ?

Not sure

But he took vaccine 2 days ago so I can imagine a few ill-informed people using that as some sort of indication that vaccines dont work

Pak Gov needs to make that clear.

Should not be announcing this publically. Our awam is jahil and they will now say vaccine did not work.

Or atleast should had not shown him get the vaccine publically.

At this rate it's starting to seem like we should put out the names of the famous personalities / politicians etc. who haven't got Covid rather than the other way around.

May Imran Khan get well soon.

But the vaccines dont stop you getting covid or spreading it to other people and that's a fact chris whitty has said that

The vaccine helps in building antibodies to prevent people falling seriously ill and getting hospitalised .

Because otherwise the majority of the vulnerable group in the uk have been vaccinated and we should be out of lockdown .

But that's not the case

Whitty and professor lockdown are on record about a third wave and maybe restrictions in winter

Yes, it does not make any sense. If he was asymptomatic, why tested and if had to be tested, it should be before the vaccine and not after that.

Think for some reason, its used to gain political sympathy also?

I am sure important people like IK would be under going pcr tests at regular intervals irrespective of whether they are symptomatic or not. It is just unlucky that the first test after vaccination came out positive.

And I agree with them making it public. The way our media works, the news would have leaked sooner or later so it is better to be transparent from the get go.

Wish him good health and a speedy recovery.

Hope this wasn’t because of taking the Chinese vaccine.

Knowing this party who knows.

But one thing is evident, these people in the govt have no clue how portray itself in public.

Pakistanis are reluctant to get the vaccine, this was not needed to be announced or atleast his vaccination should not had been made public. Should had given it to him than after 2 weeks do a publixlc display that the pm is also getting the chinese vaccine

There have been studies which show that vaccines stop transmission. It was all over the news a few weeks ago and Whitty was celebrating it.

The reason that we are still in partial lockdown is because no vaccine is 100% effective - in fact, most are from it. So if you let the population loose at a time transmission rates haven't come down to acceptable levels, then Covid will once again spread like wildfire.

In order to defeat a pandemic, you need at least 85% of the population to be vaccinated and we are now at 50% (and much less if you take account of the fact that children, who I know from first hand experience, spread the virus in schools and when they come home).

As for Imran, I wish him a full and speedy recovery inshallah.

First part of this statement is correct but second part is not. Antibodies develop 2-3 weeks after the 1st dose. Antibodies are boosted 2-3 weeks after the 2nd dose.

This will further drive Pakistanis away from vaccines given widespread illiteracy in Pakistan and zero science knowledge among Pakistanis.

Also celebrations on the Dawn site. Illiterate Ind trolls being allowed to post unmoderated crap. And the irony that Isa was saying that PK press is not free.

Pakistan's PM Imran Khan tests positive for Covid-19

Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan has tested positive for Covid-19, the country's health minister has said.

The 68-year-old is "self-isolating at home", the minister, Faisal Sultan, tweeted.

Mr Khan, a former captain of the national cricket team who became prime minister in August 2018, received his first vaccination two days ago.

Pakistan has recorded 13,799 deaths and 623,135 cases during the pandemic, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Vaccination helps develop immunity to the virus that causes Covid-19 but it usually takes a few weeks for protection to develop, and the person getting the jab remains vulnerable during that time.

The prime minister has been attending regular meetings, including at a security conference in the capital Islamabad that was attended by a large number of people, Reuters news agency notes.

He addressed that conference without wearing a mask, and attended another gathering to inaugurate a housing project for poor people on Friday, the agency reports.

World leaders wished Prime Minister Imran Khan a speedy recovery from coronavirus, as the government announced Saturday that the premier had tested positive for the infection.

The development came as the country grapples with the third wave of the pandemic, with Pakistan's coronavirus positivity ratio moving up to 9.46% and the country recording 3,876 cases and 42 deaths in the last 24 hours.

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Nong Rong, responding to the news, said: "My best wishes for speedy and complete recovery of Prime Minister of Pakistan @ImranKhanPTI."

Embassy of the United States of America in Pakistan said: "We wish Prime Minister Khan a speedy recovery. Our thoughts are with him and his family."

The French Embassy in Pakistan taking to Twitter said: "We wish PM Imran Khan a prompt and full recovery."

Australia's High Commissioner to Pakistan Dr Geoffrey Shaw also tweeted that he wished a full and speedy recovery for the prime minister. "My thoughts and prayers are with the PM and all those affected by the coronavirus around the country."

Ambassador of Switzerland to Pakistan Ambassador Bénédict de Cerjat said: "Wishing a speedy recovery to Prime Minister @ImranKhanPTI."

"Wishing a speedy recovery & shifa to PM @ImranKhanPTI #GetWellSoon," said British High Commissioner to Pakistan Christian Turner.

I guess a common enemy unites all.

Wow. He is almost 70 but looks like early fifties.

He was 40+ when he won the World Cup wasn’t he? So adds up.

To be honest he has aged fast after being PM. Happens to everyone. Even happened to Obama,Modi,Trump etc. only Putin and 11 look the same (probably due to genes) since forever

Geo, The News, Dawn are barking him 24hrs a day. They are 2 of the biggest media houses in PK. What you want is everyone to bark at him. What you should do is to steal from the poor of Sindh and buy all the others.
Maybe you can stick to freedom of speech in Sindh, remember the poor journalist in Sindh? Off course not, it's not in your DNA to condemn murder.

The # of Pakistanis willing to get the vaccine far exceeds the number of vaccines available. So its not a huge deal that some or alot of Pakistanis dont want to get vaccinated.

There is no hope for these losers. Let them pray for IKs death, Allah gives life and he takes life. If the Nooras think their dua works then maybe they should get together and pray for his death.

Hours after Prime Minister Imran Khan contracted novel coronavirus, First Lady Bushra Bibi also tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday.

"Wishing our First Lady and PM Imran Khan a speedy recovery. May Allah give them both shifa (health)," Special Assistant to the PM for Overseas Pakistanis Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari wrote on his official Twitter handle.

He said that vaccines are safe and must be taken. "PM Imran had his first shot just a day ago, before which he was exposed already," Bukhari stated, urging the masses to get vaccinated and don’t pay heed to fake news.

Earlier, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on National Health Services Dr Faisal Sultan confirmed that the premier had tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

The news came two days after PM Imran was vaccinated against the virus. However, he had received his first dose and not the second jab for the vaccine. Dr Sultan added that the premier is now isolating at home.

The Ministry of National Health Services also clarified that the premier was "not fully vaccinated" when he contracted the virus. The ministry added that only the first dose was administered, which is "too soon for any vaccine to become effective".

It further added that anti-bodies against the virus develop 2-3 weeks after the second dose of the vaccine is administered.

Federal Minister for Planning Asad Umar also said that it was "certain" that the prime minister was infected prior to vaccination as Covid-19 symptoms appear a few days after exposure to the virus.

Praying for the premier's health, Umar urged people to vaccinate against the deadly pandemic.

PTI Senator Dr Faisal Javed said the prime minister was experiencing "mild symptoms" and will continue to work from home while remaining in isolation.

At the time of his vaccination, the premier had appealed to the nation to ensure full implementation of SOPs in view of the third wave of the pandemic.

The regions of Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab have in recent days reported a sharp rise in the number of Covid-19 cases. The UK strain of the virus – more transmittable and reportedly more lethal – is sweeping across these areas as the country grapples with the third wave of the pandemic.

One thing about about left everywhere is they kick down people when they are down. Praying for person to be dead is just pathetic.

Why did he wait so long to get vaccinated ?

Got my shot a month ago and I am prime minister of nothing.

There is no hope for these losers. Let them pray for IKs death, Allah gives life and he takes life. If the Nooras think their dua works then maybe they should get together and pray for his death.

calm down.

Even when Altaf Hussain got covid or was rumored the PTI fans and other s were praying for his death. Just cause the person you support now is sick you can't go around teaching others oh dont say this.

Lets be honest, you also would had said something like that to other leaders who you hate.

As for the HIV thingy, the meds that are being used for Covid related Pneumonia also fights HIV :)). So anyone who has covid and HIV would get the same drug

I hate NS,SS,Altaf and the crooked leaders of PPP. I want them to pay for their crookedness but I don't pray for their death, I just want them to face the law and face punishment.
As I said before your badniyaati shows in your posts, you and them praying makes no difference to me or IK. Your prays couldn't kill a fly, never mind a person.

Wish him a quick recovery, in sha Allah.

I also tested positive for Covid-19 3-4 weeks ago, so know all about this. Alhamdulillah I only had mild symptoms.

Here's wishing Mrs. and Mr. Imran Khan a speedy recovery from COVID-19. We hope the symptoms, if any, are mild.

And absolutely pathetic on the part of anyone criticizing or wishing him harm during this time. What's mankind coming to?

I heard he has some mild symptoms, hope they can get monoclonal antibodies for him.

Wishing him a speedy recovery. Khan should've gotten a pfizer or moderna jab a couple months ago but hindsight 20/20 and I understand he wanted to wait in line and get what the rest of his countrymen would get.

Experts say Pakistan PM Imran Khan was likely infected with COVID-19 before receiving his first vaccine dose.

On Saturday, 68-year-old Khan tested positive for COVID-19, two days after he received his first dose of the two-dose Sinopharm vaccine. Officials say Khan was likely already infected with COVID-19 before he received the vaccine. Health experts and officials are reminding the public that the first dose of a vaccine does not provide immediate immunity, pointing out that it takes at least two weeks to develop full antibodies after the second dose.

Tell that to Maulana Satanul Diesel. Traitor want people to hesitate to get the vaccine. Never seen such a person before.

As long as he is telling people to avoid tghe 65% Shanghai-vacccine, it's fine in a 'for the greater good' sort of way. It might pressurize the government/hospitals to go for Pfizer or other mainstream vaccines.

The thick man knows no different. Plus, even the Astra vaccine is around 70%. Most vaccines have a 50% efficacy. A vaccine is better then no vaccine, even Europe is struggling for vaccine supplies.

Imran Khan is a fit human being even though he's nearly 70. Covid will only be mild for such people, nothing to worry about.

I hope in shallah IK rocovers soon.

However, you are wrong in thinking that fit people only get mild Covid symptoms. My fit friend who gyms 6 times a week, has amazing cardiovascular fitness & muscles, has a 6 pac and is shredded; really struggled with Covid. He had really high fever, cough, issues with breathing and fainted several times. He says that Covid is the worst period of his life.

Not just likely, its a fact he caught the virus prior to getting the vaccine. But its ridiculous that he was tested for the virus after receiving the vaccine and not before that, its really dumb. If he even had mild symptoms, he should not have received the vaccine .

ISLAMABAD: Federal Information Minister Senator Shibli Faraz on Sunday criticised president of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) Maulana Fazlur Rehman for what he called misguiding people about the ongoing vaccination drive against Covid-19 and terming the ailment of Prime Minister Imran Khan “a fraud”.

Speaking at a press conference, Mr Faraz said: “The opposition, specifically Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, should not misguide the people about coronavirus and its vaccination.”

In a statement, Maulana Fazl had sought to cast doubt over the effectiveness of the Covid-19 vaccine administered recently to the prime minister and had said “either the vaccine is fraud or the coronavirus”.

The PDM chief had also pointed out that the Election Commission of Pakistan had sent a notice to Mr Khan to appear before it for a hearing in the foreign funding case on Monday (today).

Imran thanks people for their good wishes

Mr Faraz lashed out at Maulana Fazl and said the opposition leader had sought to misguide the nation through his “non-serious statement” about coronavirus and the prime minister’s condition.

He said a vaccine became effective only after administration of its second dose some 21 days on from its first dose. “It’s a totally non-serious statement that why the premier had been infected after having been vaccinated two days earlier,” he said.

The minister said the Maulana should not use the situation to meet his political goals as the whole world, including Pakistan, was presently in the grip of a severe health crisis.

“Prime Minister Imran Khan and the first lady have contracted Covid-19 and we pray for the good health of the first couple,” he said, adding that the nation had shown its love and affection for Mr Khan through their good wishes and prayers.

Mr Faraz said people in larger numbers were now getting infected with the dreaded virus, but the availability of vaccines in the current wave of Covid-19 was encouraging.

He urged the nation to observe the standard operating procedures (SOPs) devised to combat the virus and also to get vaccinated. “It is not correct to say that the prime minister contracted the disease after getting a jab of an anti-Covid vaccine,” he said.

The government was making all-out efforts to save the lives and livelihood of the people during the third wave of Covid-19, he said.

Commenting on the PDM’s press briefing, the minister said the government was not worried about its plans, but added that the opposition alliance should “do something positive to save the people from coronavirus”.

He declared that the alliance was now a thing of the past because it was being led by “politically immature and juvenile leaders”.

“The PDM leaders are fighting for their personal interests, rather than for the sake of the people,” he said, adding that it had failed to impress the masses.

He was of the opinion that Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) vice president Maryam Nawaz was pursuing “disastrous, egoistic and stubborn politics”. “Her childish policies had ruined the PML-N.”

Member parties of the PDM were at loggerheads with each other and were serving their own interests, Senator Faraz said.

Pakistan’s economy had started performing better as compared to other countries in the region, he claimed. Completion of public welfare and development projects during its remaining tenure is the priority of the government.

The information minister said the government was taking “optimum measures” to control inflation and was trying to enhance targeted subsidies to facilitate the masses. “The difficult phase of economic hardships has passed.”

He said that health cards would be distributed among the deserving people in Punjab, just as they had been distributed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa under the Universal Healthcare Programme.

In a tweet, meanwhile, Prime Minister Khan said: “I want to thank everyone in Pakistan & abroad for their good wishes and prayers for the quick recovery of the first lady and I from Covid-19.”

Days after testing positive for the novel coronavirus, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday resumed his duties conducting limited official activities and personal interaction with members of his government while isolated at home.

The premier held an in-person meeting with Information Minister Shibli Faraz, Special Assistant to Prime Minister (SAPM) for Overseas Pakistanis & Human Resource Development Zulfi Bukhari, Chairman Standing Committee on Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Faisal Javed and SAPM on Media Yusuf Baig Mirza.

The meeting was held at his residence where PM Imran is in self-isolation. Prime Minister's Principal Secretary Azam Khan was also present in the meeting

The premier directed the participants of the meeting on important government issues, according to reports.

Imran had earlier contracted the virus two days after he was vaccinated against the virus. However, he had received only the first dose and not the second required jab of the vaccine.

The Ministry of National Health Services had also clarified that the premier was "not fully vaccinated" when he contracted the virus. The ministry added that only the first dose was administered, which is "too soon for any vaccine to become effective".

The ministry had further added that anti-bodies against the virus develop 2-3 weeks after the second dose of the vaccine is administered.

This was really inexplicable from Imran Khan. Felt bad for Asad Umar when someone asked him to comment on the meeting. He couldn't openly criticize the PM but as part of the covid response committee also couldn't defend it. It was painful to watch.

And then there are people like Shibli Faraz and Faisal Javed who are tweeting pictures from the meeting like it is something completely normal. No idea what goes on the heads of these people.

Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan said on Sunday that Prime Minister Imran Khan has made steady recovery from Covid-19, nearly a week after he contracted the virus.

"PM Imran Khan has made steady clinical recovery from Covid and his lab parameters have remained stable," the SAPM said in a Twitter post today.

"He has been advised that he may resume work and build up his work routine over the next few days. This is in line with national and int'l guidelines," Dr Faisal added.

On March 20, Dr Faisal confirmed that the premier had tested positive for coronavirus, adding that he had been isolating at home.

The news came two days after PM Imran was vaccinated against the virus. Following the development, the Ministry of National Health Services clarified that the premier was "not fully vaccinated" when he contracted the virus.

The ministry had added that only the first dose of the vaccine was administered, which was "too soon for any vaccine to become effective".

It maintained that anti-bodies against the virus develop two to three weeks after the second dose of the vaccine is administered.

On March 25, the premier chaired a meeting of the party leadership in person after being tested positive for the coronavirus a couple of days ago to take stock of PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz’s decision to take a rally to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) office in response to a call-up notice.

Soon after Senator Shibli Faraz shared a photo of himself, Premier Imran, SAPM on Overseas Pakistanis Zulfikar Bukhari, Standing Committee on Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Chairman Faisal Javed and SAPM on Media Yusuf Baig Mirza on Twitter, the social media was abuzz with questions like “what was so urgent and important that the PTI media team had to meet the PM”.

To a question about who called the meeting and why it was not held via video link when the PM tested positive for coronavirus, Shibli said that the PM Office called the meeting. “The PM is a fit person. Despite COVID, he is eager to work, which is why he conducted several meetings while following certain SOPs.”

On the public reaction to the photo shared on social media, Shibli said that social media became quickly active after the photo was shared but the purpose of calling the meeting, among other things, was to ensure how the government could provide maximum relief to the people during Ramazan amid the third wave of the pandemic.
