Prime Minister Imran Khan has decided to remove Abdul Hafeez Shaikh from the post of finance minister, Federal Information Minister Senator Shibli Faraz confirmed on Monday while speaking to private news channel.

He said that Revenue Minister Hammad Azhar will be given an additional charge of finance ministry.

Senator Shibli said the decision has been taken as PM Imran was not satisfied with the performance of Shaikh.

According to the information minister, the prime minister has formed a new economic team to provide relief to the masses. “PM Imran wants to bring down inflation in the country.”

More to come...

But PTI supporters were adamant that Hafeez Shaikh was doing a stellar job and Pakistan’s economy was on the up?

It is going to be really tough to defend Imran’s decision and also continue to defend Hafeez Shaikh’s performance. However, considering PTI supporters have no shame, it might not be that hard.

Speaking of Hafeez Shaikh, he was finance minister during Zardari’s tenure. Imran Khan has stated on record that the Zardari government was the most corrupt in Pakistan history.

If that is the case, then Hafeez Shaikh was either complicit in the corruption and money laundering or he is so incompetent and clueless that the government was stealing money under his name and he didn’t have a clue.

Another day, another humiliation for the most clueless, incompetent and visionless government in Pakistan history.

As Hassan Nisar said, PTI is that “nalaik”student that didn’t even study for the exam the night before. They spent years making false accusations and abusing others without preparing themselves for federal power.

That is why it is has been a complete circus over the past 3 years and the Imran Khan administration has no idea where they are going and what the long-term strategy is.

Nevertheless, this nightmare will be over soon. This (circus show) too shall pass, and PTI will be reduced to nothing but a mere footnote in Pakistan’s political history.

He's learning on the job fella. You don't get that experience unless your rishtaydaars are in government. :apology

One thing I like about Captain is that he is never afraid to take his decisions if he feels time is right. Probably burns up the PDM types but we all know what they stand for, and where they are headed.

If he is learning on the job, he should not have thumped his chest for years and projected himself as a messiah who has all the answers and solutions to Pakistan’s woes.

The reality is that he has flopped big time and is utterly clueless. He is throwing mud at the wall hoping some will stick, but so far none has.

He thought serving as the PM would be as easy as captaining a cricket team where he made himself look good with a fluke World Cup and cheap wins achieved with ball-tampering.

Unfortunately, no such flukes and cheating tactics are available in politics to make yourself look like a competent PM.

Khan is in trouble with inflation its killing the common man

People only care about lifes basics things which are increasing rapidly atta ,pulses , chicken , veg etc

This government needs to make pakistan food sufficient, instead they are destroying farmland and orchards with housing developments

Yes you are correct no flukes and cheating tactics are available and he might be doing a bad job... but at the very least he is not building his own wealth.

when you have been in a country where we can only recognize two parties pmln and ppp both of which have leaked the country dry form all resources and built up loans from every corner.. the healing takes time.

Everyone can recognize that the current govt has fallen short on promises but it has still got its tenure left.

When you have a better alternative you can vote them in power.

For now there is no alternative but to hope that kaptaan pulls the countries fortunes back around.

He is running away from the foreign funding case and has demanded secrecy in investigations. It has been 5 years now.

If he has nothing to hide, he will publicize the investigations because it presents an opportunity to reinforce the belief that he is honest.

An honest person who has no skeletons in the closet will waste no time in clearing his name and the allegations charged against him.

These allegations have been put forward by a founding member of PTI (Akbar S. Babar) without whose contributions PTI will not be where it is today.

Inran is not the saint that he projects himself to be.

Anyway, that is besides the point. Incompetence is a much bigger issue than corruption and Imran has proved to be utterly incompetent so far.

Even if all the allegations against him are 100% false, it doesn’t make his tenure as PM any better.

Moreover, he has appointed a lot of crooks and frauds in various positions which shows that he has no conscience and everything is halal when he is the beneficiary.

He gave speeches and against corruption and black money when he was using Jahangir Tareen, the head of the sugar mafia and a certified fraud as the financier of his election campaign and flew around the country in his jets.

That is the level of his hypocrisy.

As far as PTI vs PPP/PMLN is concerned, PTI has no long-term future because it is a fake party with no roots.

PTI supporters criticize dynastic politics but it is what ensures long-term survival.

PPP and PMLN will always survive because the family names of Sharif and Bhutto will live on and win votes and supporters long after the likes of Nawaz, Shehbaz, Maryam, Bilawal etc. are dead.

On the other hand, PTI only exists as a united party as long as Imran is around. There are internal factions already with the fake pir Shah Mehmood Qureshi and the fraud Jahangir Tareen fighting for supremacy in south Punjab. Both families are rivals and hate each other.

When Imran is gone, these lota politicians will be absorbed back by the parties that they came from or will form their own small parties. They don’t care about PTI and Naya Pakistan; they are only here to serve their own interests.

PTI supporters should worry about PTI’s long-term future instead of announcing funeral of PMLN and PPP.

There is no alternative because PTI is just a temporary inconvenience. The two party system will remain in the future and they will both take turns in the government depending on who serves the military’s interests better at any given point.

Really?: we need an Usman Buzdar smiley..

It's laughable to think just because people hate PDM they also love PTI. PTI is on fast track the same path the PPP was after Zardari took over.

In a major reshuffle in the federal cabinet, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday removed Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and gave the portfolio to Minister for Industries Hammad Azhar as an additional charge.

It is expected that several unelected members of the federal cabinet may be replaced by some elected members of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) and the shakeup in the cabinet will take place before coming Thursday.

Currently, the PM has 15 special assistants and five advisers.

“Yes, Mr Hafeez Shaikh has been removed and Hammad Azhar has been given additional charge of finance minister,” said Senator Shibli Faraz.

He hinted that the prime minister removed Mr Shaikh from the office of finance minister, as the former was not satisfied with the increasing inflation in the country. However, in a late night tweet, the senator took a U-turn and lauded the services of Mr Shaikh.

“Hafeez Shaikh is a gentle and hard working man. He served as adviser to the PM with commitment and nationalism. Despite difficulties, he contributed towards and played his role in improvement of the economy. We commend his efforts,” he tweeted.

The prime minister had also lauded Mr Shaikh-led economic team multiple times in recent past. Mr Shaikh is the second finance minister who has been replaced by the prime minister after Asad Umar.

Mr Faraz said though Hammad Azhar was given an additional charge of finance minister, he (Hammad) would continue to serve as finance minister on a long-term basis as the prime minister was quite satisfied and happy with Mr Azhar’s performance.

“In fact the prime minister wants young and fresh team to run the economic affairs of the country according to the ground realities,” explained the former minister for information. He added that the prime minister was quite concerned about unprecedented price hike in the country.

Mr Shaikh preferred to stay silent on the development despite Senator Faraz’s statement citing inflation as reason for the removal. Dawn also attempted to contact him for comments, but in vain.

Senator Faraz also confirmed that some changes were expected in the federal cabinet before coming Thursday when Prime Minister Khan would chair the federal cabinet meeting. “The cabinet will see shake-up before coming Thursday,” he added.

“Whatever decisions are being taken, these are solely coming from the prime minister and nobody actually knows about them,” said a senior PTI leader while talking to Dawn.

The sources said changes were expected in the ministries of Kashmir affairs, information, petroleum, energy, aviation, communication and maritime affairs.

According to the sources, Senator Faraz is likely to get the ministry of aviation or petroleum. “I am part of Imran Khan’s team and ready to take responsibility whatever he will give me,” Mr Faraz said, adding that information was one of the toughest ministries and no one should serve information minister more than a year.

It is expected that young leader Farrukh Habib, who was quite active and vocal to defend the PTI in its foreign funding case, may have a slot of state minister for information. The ministry of information could also be split into two parts — information and broadcast — and in that case the ministry for broadcast may be given to Fawad Chaudhry or Senator Faisal Javed, who has worked with an advertisement agency before coming into power.

Sheheryar Afridi may also be removed from the position of the chairman of Kashmir affairs committee and incumbent Minister for Food Security Syed Fakhar Imam is likely to replace him.

There are chances of replacement of Minister for Communications Murad Saeed for not meeting the expected targets of the ministry and the government. Minister for Energy Omar Ayub Khan, too, is expected to be replaced.

The replacement of Mr Shaikh is believed to be a ramification of the IMF programme.

On Dec 8, 2020 the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had set aside the notification regarding formation of the Cabinet Committee on Privatisation (CCoP).

The IHC, in its short order on a petition, ruled that unelected advisers and special assistants could not head government’s committees and subsequently set aside the notification of the CCoP, headed by Adviser to Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Abdul Hafeez Shaikh.

The petition, which was submitted by lawmaker Rana Iradat Sharif Khan through his counsel Barrister Mohsin Shahnawaz Ranjha, had challenged the appointment of Mr Shaikh as chairman and Adviser to the PM on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood and Adviser to the PM on Institutional Reforms and Austerity Dr Ishrat Hussain as members of the CCoP.

The petition said: “Unlike ministers, advisers are not the part of the federal government, they do not take oath, they are not responsible to parliament in terms of Article 91(6) of the Constitution, they are not subject to the qualification and disqualification provided under Articles 62 and 63 of the Constitution. Before and after their appointment, advisers are not bound to submit their statements of assets and liabilities…and they are not subject to any kind of scrutiny.”

“Appointing an Adviser with the status of a Minister does not empower him/her to act or function as a Minister or to perform functions under the Rules of Business 1973,” declared the court verdict.

Under the Constitution, Mr Shaikh who was in fact an adviser to the prime minister could serve minister only for six months (till coming June 11). The government made an attempt to get him elected as senator from Islamabad so that he could continue to serve as minster but he was defeated by the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) joint candidate former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Meanwhile, the government issued agenda of the federal cabinet’s meeting to be chaired by the prime minister on Thursday.

According to the agenda, the meeting will discuss a proposal regarding introduction of electronic voting machines to make the election process fair and transparent.

Appointment of new chairman of the Pakistan International Airlines Corporation Limited and heads/CEOs on vacant posts in public organisations is also on the top agenda.

The maximum retail prices of Covid-19 vaccine and many other drugs will also be tabled in the meeting. A decision will be taken to expand Sehat Sahulat Programme to all permanent resident families of Islamabad and Gilgit-Baltistan on the basis of Nadra database. Besides, new subsidy for Pakistan Steel Mills is also on the agenda of the meeting. The meeting will also discuss utilization of three state buildings in Islamabad—Metropolitan Club at F-9 Park, Pak-China Friendship Centre and Fata House.

We were told the economy was heading in the right direction under the close supervision of H.E. PM Immy. What happened now? Does it mean Shiekh was useless or does it mean Imran was lying about putting the country back on track?

Why on earth did Imran Khan lift the same finance minister from the period of time when the country was a basket case (2008-2013)?

Some Pakistani posters are just Wierd who crib over Wierd things. In the past we had long standing ministers from previous govts who were never removed or held accountable for poor performance and here we have a govt which is removing people for not delivering even at the expense of bad press, political capital and still people are not happy

And the what impact this good governance had on practical life of poor people, are the new appointees any better, the actual situation keep getting worse and it just show he making changes for the sake of it, it doesn't matter if you replace Ahmad Shehzad with kamran akmal, both are equally bad and end result will be same. This learning on the job excuse will mean that by the time Immy get the required experience it will already be too late. It's damn country of 22 crore not some useless organization or company which can afford this experimentation.

The RPs is still gaining ground so the markets are not going expecting any change in policy. The RP is at a 21 Month high and you would have thought that there is some reaction. Hammad Azam has the trust of the markets. Smooth transition so far.

And has that decreased the price of everyday commodities? sugar, oil and wheat price are beyond daily wagers range. So this strong rupee effect should be felt to common man but sadly it won't or it will be minimal, our incompetent government won't be able to translate that effect to poor man and will not be able to reduce prices at best it may not increase so fast but will not decrease consumption considerably that's for sure.

He is overseas Pakistani, so he doesn’t face the consequences of the unprecedented inflation that the middle and lower-class in Pakistan is suffering from.

These overseas PTI supporters can only do propaganda because they do not suffer the consequences of the incompetence of this government.

It is best to not listen to them. Remember, they were not even allowed to vote and the ECP showed them their aukaat. They are outsiders.

About time the government of Pakistan follows India’s lead and puts a ban on dual passports. All these overseas Pakistanis who pretend to fake interest in the affairs of the country will happy give up their Pakistani passports for their western passports.

3 finance ministers in 3 years shows that the government is completely clueless and has no idea what they are doing. There is no plan and only haphazard decision-making.

It is only a matter of time before this latest champion Hammad “current account deficit” Azhar also falls on the sword.

As far as the notion that the previous two finance ministers were removed because they weren’t delivering is concerned, the issue that it doesn’t tally with the stories of PTI supporters.

We were told by PTI supporters that Asad Umar is doing a fantastic job as finance minister but then Imran showed him the door because he wasn’t happy with his performance.

Then we were told that Hafeez Shaikh is doing a great job and Pakistan’s economy is one the right track, but Imran also sacked him because he wasn’t happy with his performance.

Now the same story will repeat itself. PTI supporters will boast about the great performance of Mr. Current account deficit, but Imran will boot him out in a year because he will not be happy with his performance.

So instead of thumping their chests and doing bhangra over the performance of PTI finance ministers, PTI supporters should first get on the same page as their leader as far as evaluating the performances of the finance ministers are concerned.

It is very embarrassing to see PTI supporters celebrating their performance on Monday and then getting red-faced on Tuesday as Imran sacks the finance minister based on poor performance, and then they have no choice but clutch at straws because they can neither criticize Imran not criticize the finance minister that they were praising yesterday.

Neither PTI leadership nor PTI supporters have any semblance of intelligence. That is why they keep getting humiliated.

So the lesson here is that PTI supporters should not praise the performance of Mr. Current account deficit to avoid getting embarrassed for the third time.

Why was Hafeez Shaikh sacked if he was doing a great job as per PTI supporters?

There are only two possibilities:

1. He was not doing a good and PTI supporters were clueless

2. He was doing a good job and Imran is clueless, just like was clueless when he removed Asad Umar.

Please make your pick.

Don't worry they will first create the third option and then will choose that, which will be along lines that both imran and his finance ministers are great but it's us Pakistanis who are clueless and can't find their greatness even though all evidence would suggest otherwise.

Former finance minister Dr Hafeez Shaikh has tested positive for coronavirus.

The news was confirmed by newly appointed Finance Minister Hammad Azhar on Twitter Tuesday afternoon.

Azhar said he prays for the swift recovery and good health of Sheikh.

A day earlier, the federal government decided to replace Shaikh as the finance minister with Azhar.

There was reportedly some resentment among government ministers on matters of taxation and bill-granting autonomy to the State Bank of Pakistan.

The prime minister had reportedly conveyed to Shaikh to step down from his role.

Azhar, reacting to his appointment, had said: "I am honoured to be entrusted with the additional charge of Finance by the Prime Minister."

Stick to what you know best which is trolling threads for attention and defending thugs and crooks. You were the guy that found the horrific CAD situation funny and didn't have the slightest idea about how the exchange rate is determined. Let the adults discuss adult things.

No answer as expected. In Urdu, we call this aye, baye, shaye.

So let me ask again - why did Imran consider Hafeez Shaikh’s performance poor? What went wrong and where did he fail to meet the expectations?

Why can’t PTI supporters get on the same page as Imran when it comes to evaluating the performance of PTI finance ministers?

This is the second time PTI supporters have been left humiliated after boasting about the performance of the finance ministers.

Do you think you will muster the courage to answer the above without sidestepping as usual? I think not.

What is the point of trying educate someone that has no idea what i am on about. You are someone that runs when asked to discuss, everyone on here knows what you do. I will quite happily discuss with adults on here that understand economics or even someone that understands how an Exchange rate is determined.

Shibli Faraz said that the information minister has a shelf-life of about 1 year.

It makes sense because when your job is to lie on a daily basis, it becomes impossible to continue for very long.

Hence, he is hoping for another ministry.

So what is the shelf-life of a PM? Especially a PM who has no idea what he is doing.

As long as the selectors want to keep him on the shelf perhaps?

https://www.dawn.com/news/1615539/finance-portfolio-given-to-under-19-minister-kaira

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has criticised the change of guards in the federal finance ministry, terming the new appointee as an under-19 minister.

“The selected [Prime Minister Imran Khan] is going to do a hat-trick of his cabinet [reshuffle]. The flattened economy has been handed over to an under-19 minister,” says PPP’s Punjab chapter president Qamar Zaman Kaira.

He was commenting on the appointment of Minister of State for Revenue Hammad Azhar as finance minister, who replaced Hafeez Sheikh, by the prime minister on Monday.

Mr Kaira apprehended that an “inexperienced” finance minister would further damage the country’s economy.

Using cricket jargon, the PPP leader said Mr Khan had begun “playing T20 match” with the country, considering his cabinet as a cricket team.

He advised the prime minister to change his approach and mindset instead of changing faces in his cabinet to improve its performance.

Meanwhile, PPP Parliamentary Leader in Punjab Assembly Hassan Murtaza has alleged that the government was giving a lollipop to the masses in the name of development package to salvage its falling credibility.

Ridiculing Chief Minister Usman Buzdar’s announcement of a development package for Chiniot district for the next financial year, he said the provincial chief executive was rushing from one district to another because of his fear of a no-confidence move against him. He advised Mr Buzdar to save the money being spent on his visits and use the same for the purchase of Covid-19 vaccine for the people.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistani banker and former finance minister Shaukat Tareen is likely to be made Prime Minister Imran Khan's aide on finance and revenue, sources informed Geo News on Wednesday.

According to the sources, Tareen — who attends important meetings of PM Imran Khan's finance and economic team — would likely be appointed special assistant to the premier or his finance adviser.

However, the final decision on whether he would be appointed as a special assistant or adviser would be made by the premier himself, the sources added.

On the other hand, top officials of the PTI regime have contacted Tareen, who said he "is ready to directly work with" the government but has asked for 15-20 days' time to "deal with something he's busy in", the sources added.

One recommendation, according to the sources, is that Tareen could work with Hammad Azhar — who was given the portfolio of finance ministry a day earlier in addition to serving as the federal minister for industries and production — on technical and policy matters.

The sources also said it was recommended to have Tareen contest the Senate election as well.

Azhar was appointed as the new finance minister on Tuesday, the Cabinet division confirmed through a notification, in addition to his portfolio of the ministry of industries and production.

PM Imran Khan had conveyed to former finance minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh to step down from his role, with Azhar saying he was "honoured to be entrusted with the additional charge".

The development had come after PPP leader and former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani defeated Shaikh for the Islamabad general seat in Senate elections 2021.

people are really angry elections are near

Hafeez refused to listen to IK in terms of keeping inflation low (because in his professional opinion he probably thought it was the wrong thing to do)

lets be clear, hafeez saab was an appointee of the IMF and not IK, now hes done with it, hes disposed.
