PM Shehbaz Sharif and family's legal troubles

ISLAMABAD:The Supreme Court (SC) accepted for preliminary hearing the government's plea challenging the permission granted to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif to fly abroad, on Tuesday.

The PML-N leader was granted the permission by the Lahore High Court (LHC) on May 7, the same day he had filed a plea seeking the removal of his name from the blacklist.

"Prima facie, the government appears to be in contempt of the Lahore High Court's decision," the top court observed during the hearing.

The case was heard by a two-judge bench comprising Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah.

Justice Shah questioned how the government's appeal could be heard considering that Shehbaz Sharif had withdrawn his plea seeking implementation of the LHC's order.

At this, the Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) argued that the decision to allow the PML-N leader from flying abroad had not been revoked in the order given on the plea's withdrawal.

"Shehbaz's plea regarding contempt of court is underway, and it could result in an implementation of the verdict allowing the departure," the AGP stated.

Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan said, "We now have to see whether the government committed contempt of the LHC decision."

Shehbaz Sharif, the judge added, is a parliamentarian and the leader of the opposition, adding that it was mandatory to give due respect to all parliamentarians.

However, he questioned whether the PML-N leader had a medical emergency due to which an urgent hearing of his plea was held.

The AGP responded saying, "Shehbaz Sharif's bail was rejected on medical grounds. There is no record supporting the fact that he had a [medical] emergency."

"The LHC didn't even hear the federal government's stance; took a unilateral decision and asked for the enforcement of the same," the AGP added.

"Shehbaz, as an oppisition leader, is respectable, but justice should be served as per the law," he said.

After hearing the AGP's stance, the top court accepted the government's plea for preliminary hearing. The court also sought record of the case from the high court.

Issuing notices to the parties involved in the case, the apex court adjourned the hearing for a week.

Earlier this month, on May 8, the PML-N president was barred from flying from the Lahore airport to the UK via Qatar by the Federal Investigation Authority (FIA), a day after the LHC granted him permission to travel abroad once for medical treatment.

The opposition leader in the National Assembly reached the airport along with other party leaders but was “offloaded” before the Doha-bound flight's departure despite being issued a boarding pass.

FIA officials stopped Shehbaz at the immigration counter, telling him that his name was on the provincial identification list (PNIL) and he could not leave the country until the system was updated.

This is about to get interesting. But I won't hold my breath as the SC has as about as many crooks on its bench as the Lawhore High Court. But when you have the likes of Isa and his protectors on the SC bench, then what hope is there for Justice in PK.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif on Monday said that the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government was acting “insensitive” to the plight of the masses.

Slamming the government for being "unaware" of the troubles confronting a common man, the PML-N leader said that a large number of people were hungry and unemployed, adding that the increasing inflation had badly impacted their livelihoods.

"The rulers continue to paint a positive picture of their economic performance whereas the people are not even capable to feed themselves twice a day," Shehbaz said.

"People are facing shortage of essential commodities such as flour, wheat, sugar, vegetables, milk and medicines."

Expressing concerns over the rising inflation, Shehbaz said, "price of flour has increased by Rs57 per kg, which amounts to an increase of 73%. The price of sugar has gone up to Rs120 and Rs130".

Earlier, Shehbaz alleged that the PTI-led government had shown wrong and exaggerated economic figures to the nation terming it a “betrayal” to the people.

He said that every week since February 25, prices of commodities had risen by 13%. He claimed that rates of products had gone up by 17% over the year while the price of food items had surged by 14%. “It has destroyed the middle class.”

“Imran Khan is running the country only for his friends.” However, the PML-N president did not mention any names.

“The PTI has left five million people unemployed and 20 million in abject poverty.”

He maintained that in a thriving economy, “inflation lowers, employment boosts, and government builds school, hospitals and initiate projects”.Home horizontal 1 and pak

https://tribune.com.pk/story/2305426/shehbaz-asks-govt-to-reveal-names-of-powerful-players-brokering-imf-deal

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif has urged Prime Minister Imran Khan to take the lower house of parliament into confidence over the government’s ongoing negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He made the remarks on Tuesday while delivering the post-budget speech in the house amid treasury benches hue and cry and attempts to interrupt his address. “Prime minister should come to the house and give explanation over reports that some powers are playing their role to broker deal between Pakistan and the IMF,” he added.

Shehbaz said the opposition wanted to know about the secret players involved in the IMF negotiations.

Last week, Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin had denied reports that Pakistan is leveraging its ties with the US military for putting off some reform measures under the IMF loan programme. His comments were made in reference to a story by The Financial Times which quoted the finance minister saying that military cooperation with the US over America’s withdrawal from Afghanistan had given the Imran Khan’s government “some space” to delay unpopular IMF reforms.

Islamabad is in talks with the IMF to release the next tranche of funding as part of a $6 billion loan programme.

The opposition leader while quoting credible sources said that the government is "secretly planning to impose additional taxes worth Rs383 billion".

“If this turns out to be true then people’s lives would be made miserable and they would not be able to make their ends meet,” he remarked.

Shehbaz said the government had been telling lies for the last three years about its economic statistics and termed the budget a “lie and fraud” with the nation.

He demanded the finance minister assure the house that no new taxes would be imposed in the upcoming federal budget.

The PML-N president sent on to say that due to high inflation the real income of the masses has fallen.

He said during the tenure of the PTI-led government, the unprecedented fiscal deficit was recorded.

National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser adjourned on Wednesday the assembly minutes after it started as treasury members continued their protest for the third consecutive day to disrupt Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif's budget speech.

Surrounded by sergeants, Shehbaz tried to deliver his speech amid sloganeering from the treasury benches but was cut short. Qaiser repeatedly called on the parliamentarians to be seated, but eventually adjourned the session after an object was thrown at the speaker's dais.

He ordered for whoever had thrown the object to be escorted from the House and said he would take action against the individual responsible.

"I will not conduct this House (NA) until both the government and the opposition [settle their matters]," said Qaiser before walking out, adjourning the session till tomorrow.

Earlier today, the speaker also barred seven MNAs, including three from the PTI, from entering the House after budget books and expletives were thrown during yesterday's session.

Ali Gohar Khan (PML-N), Chaudhary Hamid Hameed (PML-N), Sheikh Rohale Asghar (PML-N), Faheem Khan (PTI), Abdul Majeed Khan (PTI), Ali Nawaz Awan (PTI) and Syed Agha Rafiullah (PPP) were told to not enter the precinct of the Parliament House till further orders.

A separate statement issued by the NA Secretariat said that the ban on the MNAs would last until further orders. "The NA Secretariat has issued instructions to the concerned MNAs and to the assembly security," it said.

The decision came after the NA turned into a battleground on Tuesday as the opposition and treasury members scuffled with each other and threw budget documents and books when the latter continued their noisy protest to disrupt Shehbaz's budget speech for a second consecutive day.

Qaiser suspended the proceedings of the House three times when the treasury members, led by some of the senior ministers who had come directly to the House after attending the weekly cabinet meeting, refused to pay heed to his directives to stay calm and kept on sloganeering, whistling and desk-thumping. Meanwhile, Shehbaz, who was surrounded by his party members to avoid any physical contact with the treasury MNAs, also continued his speech.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported that the speaker had sought six names each from the opposition and treasury benches for a parliamentary committee that would decide conduct for budget sessions.

ISLAMABAD: Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif on Thursday finally delivered his speech in the Lower House after three days of rowdy behaviour by lawmakers.

Moments before Shahbaz's speech, Defence Minister Pervez Khattak had announced that the government and Opposition had reached an agreement to run the National Assembly "in an orderly manner".

The announcement followed days of ruckus and general disorder in the lower house of Parliament as the Treasury and Opposition benches sparred over the federal budget for the 2022 fiscal year.

Speaking on the floor of the NA today, the Opposition leader said all of the lawmakers present in the assembly were elected by 220 million Pakistanis and they were responsible for changing the nation's future for the better.

There was complete silence in the house during Shehbaz Sharif’s speech, who lashed out at the government of Prime Minister Imran Khan for “ruining lives of Pakistanis”.

'Fake budget'
Shahbaz, referring to the 21 government bills that were passed on June 10, said the lawmaking done a few days ago has flaws in it.

The Opposition leader slammed the government, saying the budget was "fake", as the pockets of the poor people were "empty" and they were not able to feed their families.

"In three years, 20 million people have been pushed below the poverty line, while the growth rate has come down drastically in the last year," he said.

The wages of labourers have fallen by 18% in the last three years as people keep asking where are the promised 10 million jobs and 5 million houses, the Opposition leader said.

"The unemployment rate stands at 15% [...] Food prices have shot up by 30% in the last three years," he said.

"There are unprecedented differences between the provinces [...] If the government only develops Punjab and leaves out rest of the provinces, then this is not development," the Opposition leader said.

Shahbaz, further slamming the government, said it had devoted its energy to revenge instead of accountability. "The Opposition has been subjected to the worst kind of revenge."

PPP's Khurshid Shah, his son, and PML-N's Khawaja Asif remain behind bars till date, Shahbaz lamented.

He said when coronavirus had hit the country, the Opposition had sat down with the government to discuss a plan of action, but Prime Minister Imran Khan left the meeting.

"You had pushed us against the wall even when we tried to help you during the stressful times of coronavirus," he said.

Casting aspersions on the government's spendings, he asked that why were billions of rupees not spent on coronavirus vaccines?

"If this budget will not reduce poverty, then we condemn it, and we will not allow this house to pass it," Shahbaz said. "No nation prospers if the government destroys the agricultural and industrial sector," Shahbaz said.

The Opposition leader said Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin claims the country's economy is boosting, but despite that, wheat prices went up from Rs35 to Rs70.

Shahbaz said 1.1 million tonnes of sugar were exported with the prime minister's approval, and a subsidy worth billions of rupees was given on it.

"First sugar and wheat were exported, then they were imported — it incurred a loss of billions of rupees on the national exchequer," Shahbaz said.

'PM's seat remains empty'
Shahbaz said during the PML-N's government the International Monetary Fund's programme had been completed, but now, the progress has reversed during PTI's three years.

"The government should inform the Opposition about the conditions of the IMF," he said, as the government keeps reiterating that the international money lender had imposed harsh conditions.

The Opposition leader slammed the prime minister for not taking the house in confidence.

Shahbaz, pointing towards the prime minister's seat, said: "This seat remains empty when there is a discussion on Afghanistan; this seat remains empty when there is a discussion on Palestine and Kashmir, this seat remains empty when there is a discussion on inflation and unemployment; this seat remains empty when there is a discussion on coronavirus."

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) accused the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif and his family members of laundering about Rs25 billion using the bank accounts of employees working for Ramzan Sugar Mills and Al-Arabia Sugar Mills.

On June 15, The FIA's Anti-Corruption Circle issued a notice to the PML-N president, asking him to appear in person before its investigators on June 22 and also bring relevant documents with him.

The PML-N leader appeared before FIA’s five-member team today, led by FIA Punjab Zone-1 Director Dr Rizwan, at its Lahore office.

The agency had also summoned Shehbaz’s son, Hamza Shehbaz. A day before, an additional district and sessions judge granted pre-arrest bail to both PML-N leaders in the multi-billion sugar scam.

According to the FIA, Shehbaz and his family members laundered money using 20 bank accounts of peons, clerks, cashiers and warehouse managers employed in the sugar mills.

About Rs2.70 billion was laundered in the name of peon Maqsood and about Rs2.80 billion was laundered in the name of Haji Naeem.

The anti-corruption watchdog further added that about Rs2.5 billion was laundered in the name of another employee working as a driver whereas about Rs1.75 billion was laundered in the name of a peon named Aslam.

The FIA further claimed that about Rs4.5 billion was laundered in the name of clerks Azhar and Ghulam Shabir Hayat.

The names of Qaiser Abbas, Akbar, Iqrar, Anwar, Yaseen, Ghazanfar, Tauqeer, Zafar Iqbal, Kashif Majeed and Masroor Anwar were also used, the FIA added.

The FIA further accused the chief financial officer of Sharif Group of Companies of supervising all money laundering whereas Shahbaz’s camp office was used to collect the money and sacks of notes were delivered to Salman Shahbaz's office under police protocol.

All the money from Salman’s office would be sent abroad by hawala and hundi, the FIA claimed further.

Adviser to Prime Minister on Accountability and Interior Shehzad Akbar has hit back at Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif saying come what may the government will not let him run away from the country.

He said this while addressing a press conference, flanked by Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry and Energy Minister Hammad Azhar, in Islamabad on Monday.

“Shehbaz Sharif is facing very serious charges of corruption… with strong evidence presented before the court,” he said.

“Don’t try to escape to London. No matter how much you [Shehbaz] try, the government will not let you leave the country,” warned Akbar.

His statement comes in response to Shehbaz Sharif’s news conference held earlier in the day wherein he claimed that the “NAB-Niazi” nexus had failed to prove even a single penny of corruption against the PML-N leaders.

Shehbaz said due to incompetence of Prime Minister Imran Khan-led government, the country had been facing prolonged power outages. “We saved Rs250 billion in energy projects and ended [power] loadshedding from the country during our tenure.”

Akbar, in response, also claimed that Shehbaz’s family assets increased by seven billion rupees due to money laundering. He urged Shehbaz to respond to corruption allegations instead of making hue and cry over the accountability process.

Speaking on the occasion, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said the proceedings of high profile corruption cases should be allowed to telecast live on national television.

“We appeal Chief Justice of Pakistan [Justice Gulzar Ahmed] to allow live broadcast of high profile corruption cases,” Fawad said.

The minister said National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had recovered a total of Rs427 billion in corruption cases with Rs37 billion being recovered in fake account cases involving former president Asif Ali Zardari alone.

Taking a jibe at opposition parties, Fawad said a frustrated Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari abandoned the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) election campaign midway and Pakistan Muslim League -Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz would soon follow suit.

"PML-N leader's frustration evident since she had no narrative as indicated by her senseless and frivolous speeches... her party failed to field candidates in all the constituencies," he added.

All such factors, he said, would eventually force Maryam to leave the field, thus giving an upper hand to the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Out of frustration, the PML-N was already making a hue and cry over what they called "rigging" in the AJK Legislative Assembly polls, he added

Fawad said the PML-N leader did not know the exact number of wars, Pakistan and India fought on the Kashmir issue.

He said the PTI's election campaign was robust and it would beat both the parties, which even could not manage to field the required number of candidates in the AJK electoral arena.

He said Shehbaz Sharif, during his press conference today, played up the power and gas issues instead of explaining his position on allegations of corruption.

Fawad said that Shehbaz should have responded to the queries about the laundering of Rs25 billion abroad on forged documents but he kept narrating his tale about building Metro in Punjab.

"When questioned about billions of rupees transferred to his accounts, Shehbaz said he had served the Punjab province," the minister added.

Fawad said that both the PPP and the PML-N had one similarity that the funds given to them by the centre for the development of Sindh and Punjab were found in London.

"Some of the properties of former rulers were exposed through the Panama Papers scandal, and many more were yet to be unearthed," he added.

Talking about Afghanistan, the information minister said that Pakistan had been keenly monitoring the fast-changing situation in the neighbouring country and the entire world had lauded its efforts for durable peace there. "Pakistan was in contact with all Afghan parties and made full efforts for the creation of a peaceful and all-encompassing government in Kabul," he added.

He said that Prime Minister Imran Khan had unequivocally declared that Pakistan would be a partner of the United States in the peace efforts, but not conflict.

He said that in the past, Pakistan had an open border with Afghanistan, which had now been fenced, and in case of new refugees, appropriate steps would be initiated to handle the influx in a systematic manner.

A banking court judge on Saturday expressed his displeasure over the FIA’s “slow” investigation in a money laundering case involving Rs25 billion against PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz.

The court also extended the pre-arrest bails of the opposition leader in the National Assembly and his son until September 25.

At one point, the judge reprimanded the FIA after he asked about the current status of the agency’s investigation.

The FIA investigation officer tried to elaborate on what sort of investigation the agency had conducted.

The official told the court that some accounts had been opened and dubious transactions were made through those accounts.

The official’s statement irked Shehbaz, who argued that the FIA had submitted a copy of the NAB case already filed against him and his son.

The judge told Shehbaz that if thought that the NAB and FIA cases were the same, then he should appeal before a higher court.

Shehbaz replied that he was planning to file an appeal.

He implored the court that he had no ties with the Ramzan Sugar Mill case.

Dissatisfied with the investigation, the banking court judge asked the FIA as to what extra work had the agency done during two months.

He added that if examined, only four lines were found that the FIA had mentioned in the investigation.

Shehbaz implored the court that he had been kept in jail twice, the relevant authority had completed its investigation but he was at a loss to understand why the same matter was being probed.

The banking court judge directed the FIA to come up with a development report on the investigation by September 25.

The judge directed the officials of FIA to ask Dr Rizwan, the head of the investigation team, to appear in person at the next hearing to update the court regarding the developments in the investigation.

Hamza told the court that an FIA team had visited him in jail for questioning. He added that the FIA wanted to arrest him now after his release. The judge directed him to cooperate with the agency in the investigation.

KARACHI:
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif stressed on Sunday to take all provinces onboard, respect them and ensure equal access of resources for all them

His remarks came as he addressed the media in Karachi alongside Balochistan National Party-Mengal chief Akhtar Mengal, whom he met to offer condolences on the death of his father, Sardar Ataullah Mengal.

The PML-N president further stated that all stakeholders would have to move forward collectively for democracy to progress.

Speaking about the late nationalist leader, Shehbaz said that history will remember Sardar Ataullah Mengal in golden words.

Recalling that many democratic governments were toppled using the Article 58 2(b), he highlighted that late Ataullah Mengal had a crucial role to play in abolishing it.

The PML-N leader opined that the Quaid-e-Azam's dream would only materialise if all provinces were taken onboard.

A day earlier, while addressing a convention of the party’s activists in Sialkot, Shehbaz said the party’s victory in the cantonment board elections was no mere feat and it meant the end of PTI’s politics.

“There is no denying the fact that the cantonment board elections took place without any interference,” the opposition leader in the National Assembly said.

“The majority of Punjab voted for the PML-N. The PTI died at its birthplace,” he added.

“Next time, the general elections will have to be held in a transparent manner without any rigging.”

Shehbaz warned that if the polls were not held in a free and fair manner, his party would pursue legal action as per its right.

Money laundering case against Shehbaz is in Lahore, not London: Akbar

PM's aide says London court's order does not even contain the name of Shehbaz Sharif

Prime Minister's Adviser on Accountability Shahzad Akbar on Tuesday responded to the claims made by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) that its president Shehbaz Sharif has been acquitted by a London court, saying there was no money laundering case against the PML-N chief in the United Kingdom.

In a tweet, Akbar shared the copy of the court order, saying the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) was investigating the bank account of Suleman Shahbaz over "two suspicious transactions".

Akbar further said that reports regarding the acquittal of the PML-N chief were factually incorrect as the order didn't even pertain to Shehbaz Sharif.

The PM's aide said the National Accountably Bureau (NAB) and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) were investigating Shehbaz over alleged money laundering and "fake transactions" worth billions of rupees.

During a virtual press conference, Akbar said the NCA has the authority to freeze any individual's bank accounts for a year on suspicion and further said that in September 2019, the NCA issued an order for freezing the accounts of Suleman Shehbaz and Zulfiqar owning to a “prohibited transaction”.

The NCA had approach Pakistan to seek details of the transaction with which Islamabad fully cooperated, he said, adding that the crime agency shared certain names with Pakistan in this regard as well.

Speaking about the recent judgement, Akbar said it was issued on September 10 by the Magistrate's Court of London and it does not mention Shehbaz Sharif's name .

"Even though the order didn’t pertain to Shehbaz, an impression was created that the PML-N chief has been acquitted in a money laundering in London", he said, adding that an attempt was made to “distort the facts”.

According to the adviser, the government may consider legal action after talking to the legal team.

Akbar further said that the PML-N president was not facing money laundering cases in the UK. He said the former chief minister was being tried in courts of Pakistan and statements of witnesses were being recorded in the cases.

The adviser also took a jibe at Shehbaz, saying he should get a good lawyer for the perusal of court orders to avoid embarrassment in the future and added that the spokespersons of Shehbaz made a fool out of themselves as the order did not mention the PML-N president.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry has said that Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif would be sentenced to at least 25 years in prison “if hearing of his corruption case is conducted on merit”.

“We hope that hearing on his [Shehbaz] case would be held on a daily basis… the people of Pakistan want to recover looted wealth from Sharif family,” he said while addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Tuesday.

Fawad, while responding to a question regarding reports that Shehbaz and his son Suleman were acquitted by the UK court, termed them incorrect.

He also referred to the presser of PM’s aide on accountability Shehzad Akbar, who said earlier in the day that here was no money laundering case registered against the PML-N president in the United Kingdom.

In a tweet, Akbar shared the copy of the court order, saying the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) was investigating the bank account of Suleman Shahbaz over "two suspicious transactions".

Akbar further said that reports regarding the acquittal of the former Punjab chief minister were factually incorrect as the order didn't even pertain to him.

The UK’s NCA on Monday submitted its investigation report at the Westminster Magistrate Court, requesting it to set aside the accounts freezing orders for Shehbaz Sharif and his son Suleman.

The accounts were frozen in December 2019 at the joint request of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and the Assets Recovery Unit (ARU) led by Adviser to the Prime Minister on Accountability Shahzad Akbar.

Election reforms

Fawad in the same presser said that Prime Minister Imran Khan in a cabinet meeting has directed ruling PTI lawmakers to hold negotiations with the opposition parties to break the deadlock over electoral reforms.

The minister said electoral reforms are imperative for transparent elections and the ruling party members including Babar Awan, Ali Muhammad Khan and others have been directed to discuss the matter of EVMs [electronic voting machine] and overseas Pakistanis’ voting rights with the opposition.

“We welcome the negotiations with the opposition parties in parliament but the negotiations should not be aimed at wasting time and delaying tactics,” he added.

Local body elections

Fawad while addressing a ceremony held earlier in the day in the federal capital admitted that delaying local body elections after coming into power in 2018 was the ruling party’s biggest mistake and it caused loss to the government.

The minister said PM Imran believed that strong local body system was crucial for good governance and in its absence the prevailing issues cannot be resolved.

Fawad said that the ruling party needed to take steps to hold local body elections and devolve power to the district and council levels.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry on Wednesday made a call on behalf of his party and entire nation for the daily hearing of corruption and money laundering cases filed against PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

“Shehbaz held a news conference for over an hour today (Wednesday) but he did not utter a single word on the two important cases being heard against him,” Fawad said while talking to media outside the Parliament House soon after the PML-N president’s presser.

“It was being expected that the PML-N leader would respond to the allegations levelled against him but keeping the tradition of Sharif family alive, he resorted to lies for misleading the media and nation on his case in the United Kingdom.”

Fawad regretted the “fake news” run by a section of the media claiming that Shehbaz had been cleared by the UK agency, though the investigations were held against his son Suleman Shehbaz and there was no mention of the PML-N president in the case.

Read PM’s adviser approached NCA against me: Shehbaz

He clarified that the case was not filed by the Pakistan government rather it was an agency in London which conducted the probe against Suleman on its own. He said Shehbaz facing “strong cases” in Pakistan should defend himself in the court of law.

“He is facing a NAB reference worth Rs7.32 billion for which no hearing has been held for the past six months. The second case is regarding money laundering worth Rs25 billion.”

The minister recalled that during sugar shortage last year, the cabinet had ordered for checking the bank accounts of all sugar mill owners in the country.

“During this investigation, a money laundering network by Ramzan and Al-Arabia Sugar mills owned by Shehbaz family was unearthed.”

Fawad said the FIA had disclosed that from 2008 to 2018 money laundering of more than Rs25 billion was done by both the mills through 57 fictitious bank accounts in the name of ordinary people including the employees of the mills.

Giving details of the NAB case, he said besides Shehbaz, his wife Nusrat and sons Hamza and Suleman were among the accused in Rs7.32 billion fictitious TTs.

Fawad observed that the PML-N president in his press conference had said that his son’s (Suleman) acquittal be considered his acquittal, but for cases in Pakistan the Sharifs had the opposite stance.

“Here, Shehbaz claimed that he had nothing to do with his children’s money as they were independent.”

Meanwhile, PML-N Information Secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb asked Prime Minister Imran Khan to first “measure the length” of the network of roadways and motorways laid by party supremo Nawaz Sharif before raising any objection.

Responding to the premier’s statement about the lack of focus on roads, Marriyum said it was ironic that [PM] Imran and his party who used to criticise Nawaz and Shehbaz for laying down a network of roads was now “whining” about not enough roads being built.

“Imran, cannot even measure the tens of thousands of kilometers of roads built by the PML-N leadership.”

"Such flip-flops further prove that Imran Khan's mental health is seriously questionable. Such ‘bigoted and hypocritical’ statements are a result of the embarrassment faced by Imran in national and foreign courts that booted out all fictitious cases levelled against the PML-N leadership,” she said.

LAHORE:
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif has suspended all political activities for two weeks reportedly after falling down on a staircase and hurting his back.

PML-N Spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb confirmed on Thursday that the incident occurred when the former Punjab chief minister was leaving for a press conference a day before, on September 29.

She further informed that the party president was safe from any major injury. However, on the advice of the doctors, the opposition leader has suspended all political activities for two weeks.

“Doctors have advised him complete rest and physiotherapy,” she said.

A day earlier, Shehbaz claimed that the Assets Recovery Unit (ARU), headed by the prime minister's aide on accountability, Mirza Shahzad Akbar, approached the UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) to open an inquiry against him and his son Suleman – maintaining that the fact that the agency could not find any evidence against them of money laundering meant that it was the PTI government’s attempt to “politically victimise” him.

Addressing a news conference in Lahore, the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly presented “evidence” of his innocence in the money laundering case in the UK in a bid to refute the claims made by the government.

“The decision of the NCA to unilaterally approach the court to unfreeze our accounts proves that they have absolved us of all the charges levelled by the government, through the ARU, National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), of money laundering, receiving kickbacks and involvement in corruption,” he added.

Caught up in the party's daily workers' conventions, the PML-N President earlier this week said his party, under the leadership of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, would "bury for good" the politics of the ruling PTI in the 2023 general elections.

Addressing a workers' convention in Rawalpindi, the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly hinted at launching a protest movement against inflation and issued instructions to the workers to be ready for it.

Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Saturday, in response to PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif’s call for snap elections earlier in the day, said the opposition leader should not vent his frustration over the injustices done to him by his own party by making “unconstitutional” demands.

He added that Shehbaz must first decide whether he was still in the party or had been removed from it by his elder brother through his close aides.

“The politics of the PML-N has been buried by the elder Mian Sahib and his daughter. They can no longer fool the people of Pakistan.”

He noted that when they [Sharifs] were in power, the wanted their government to complete its constitutional term. “If the people have given power to [PM] Imran Khan, they can’t tolerate it.”

The minister maintained that those who had been addicted to using government resources and protocols for decades suffered without power like a “fish out of water”.

Shehbaz slams government for unleashing ‘tsunami of taxes’

He said the current inflation in the country was the outcome of the billions of rupees of corruption and foreign loans taken by previous governments for personal gains.

Fawad advised JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman not to play with the democratic system to satisfy his political ego.

“Why doesn’t he remember his past speeches in the National Assembly? Why do you want to turn an entire pot over for a plate of halwa?”

The minister claimed that PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz were treating Shehbaz the same way PPP Co-Chairperson Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had done with the JUI-F chief.

“Maulana Sahib and Shehbaz Sharif should work together and form an association of victims,” he quipped.

Earlier in the day, the PML-N president had stepped up pressure on the PTI-led government, seeking ‘transparent early elections’ in the country to steer it out of its current crises.

Addressing the media accompanied by Fazl, Shehbaz said the prices of essential commodities including flour and sugar had skyrocketed but the government was “asleep at the steering wheel”.

He maintained that all opposition parties, including those which were part of the PDM, were demanding free and transparent snap elections in the country, terming it the only way forward to steer the country out of crises. “It is the only way to restore the prosperous Pakistan of the past," he added.

Adviser to the Prime Minister on Accountability and Interior Shahzad Akbar on Monday said that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Shehbaz Sharif had tried to escape the accountability process as during his appearance in an accountability court pertaining to the Telegraphic Transfers (TT), assets beyond known sources of income and money laundering case, he pleaded for the next hearing date to attend the National Assembly session.

Addressing a news conference at 90 Shahrah-e-Quaid-e-Azam, Akbar said if Shehbaz was cleared of money-laundering charges from a London court, he should have presented the evidences which became the base of his alleged clearance in the money-laundering allegations by the London court, during his appearance in the accountability court on Monday.

He said the PML-N president and his accomplices tried to distort the facts and figures to befool the masses by projecting a narrative that the London court had acquitted Shehbaz of money-laundering charges, adding that Shehbaz was using delaying tactics to flee the accountability process.

Akbar said that the case in which Shehbaz appeared before an accountability court related to assets beyond known sources of income was initiated in 1990 when he became a public office holder, adding that his declared assets in 1990 were of Rs2.1 million, Rs14.8 million in 1998 and he and his family's declared assets were of Rs21 million in 2003. Hamza Shehbaz had declared the Shehbaz's Sharif family’s assets as Rs34.4 million in 2005 in which he mentioned the TTs for the first time, he added.

The adviser said that assets of Shehbaz’s family were significantly increased by Rs660 million as the source of income for declared assets was Rs77 million which was 11 per cent of the total income, whereas the remaining 89 per cent income came from TTs, which were presented by exchange companies, not banks through forged documents which also had been proved in the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) investigation.

Akbar said that Shehbaz had started a few companies, purchased two houses at a cost of Rs115 million; one in Murree and the other in DHA besides clearing tax payments of a land cruiser through forged or fake TTs as a source of income. Suleman and Hamza had accepted in written that "Manzoor Paparwala" was their real investor who invested in their businesses from London, he maintained.

The adviser said that TTs of Rs181 million were directly transferred to the personal account of Hamza while Suleman received TTs of Rs3 billion in which he had shown that he received TTs of Rs1.5 billion as loan from Mushtaq alias "Chini", adding that "Chini" had also confessed money laundering for Hamza and Suleman.

To a question, Akbar said that the cases like Shehbaz’s family case were a challenge to the judiciary as every institution including parliament, government and judiciary should have to play their role to ensure transparency and accountability.

He said that as per the new NAB law, the accountability cases should be concluded within six months.

To another query, he said that courts should ensure case management besides adopting latest methods of recording testimonies and evidences so that the cases could be concluded in time.

He said the Sharif family could not befool the people as the masses had been aware of Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz’s corruption.

The adviser said that accountability institutions including NAB and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) were putting in efforts to finalise the investigation into the corruption charges so that the accused could meet their logical end, adding that the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) believed in accountability for all and similar standards for all in the criminal justice system.

https://www.dawn.com/news/1656117/takleef-package-opposition-slams-pm-imran-for-petrol-price-hike-two-days-after-announcing-relief-measures

The opposition slammed Prime Minister Imran Khan and the PTI government on Friday for increasing the prices of petroleum products two days after the premier's announcement of the "biggest welfare package in Pakistan's history", saying the government could only give misery to the people.

In a notification issued late on Thursday night, the government raised petroleum prices by up to Rs8.14 per litre with immediate effect.

According to the notification, the ex-depot price of petrol was fixed at Rs145.82 per litre, showing an increase of Rs8.03. The ex-depot price of high-speed diesel was fixed at Rs142.62 per litre, up Rs8.14.

The government had earlier decided to keep the prices unchanged in "public interest".

Reacting to the price hike, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif said the incumbent government had "surpassed all limits of incompetency, inefficiency and corruption".

Noting that it would lead to a rise in inflation, Shehbaz said it had become difficult for people to live.

"The government is about to increase inflation by raising the petroleum levy on the orders of IMF which is cruel. The government has also given in to the IMF's conditions for increasing electricity tariff. The government has given the public an 'inflation package'. The nation is asking: these are the good days they (PTI government) have brought?"

The PML-N president also compared the country's situation to other regional states, saying that taxes on petroleum products were reduced in India while Bangladesh and Sri Lanka had lower prices for diesel.

The people were now praying to get rid of the PTI government, he claimed.

"Government officers are being changed because of incompetence but Imran Khan is [still] sitting on his seat after the biggest incompetence and corruption," Shehbaz said, adding that it had been proved that the incumbent government could "only give takleef (trouble) to people instead of relief".

The government had brought people to the point of ration cards in three years, he said, claiming that Prime Minister Imran had become the "killer of people's joys".

The price of cooking oil had also gone up by 130 per cent in three years, the PML-N president said. "A new storm of inflation has arrived with the announcement of relief package," he said.

In a tweet later in the day, Shehbaz said: "Yet another petrol bomb exploded on the masses in the dead of night. This is IK's way of providing 'relief' after giving a long sermon yesterday. Unfortunately, every day dawns with horrible news for the people. This incompetent/corrupt PTI govt & Pakistan can't go together!"

PPP Vice President Sherry Rehman also noted that the increase in petrol prices came two days after the announcement of the relief package.

"Days after announcing a 'relief package', PTI govt drops another petrol bomb by hiking petrol prices by a whopping Rs8.14/L. Petrol prices now stand at a record Rs145.8/L. First time in Pakistan’s history that prices of all the petroleum products are above Rs110/L. #NayaPakistan," she tweeted.

The PPP demanded an immediate reduction in the prices of petroleum products.

PPP information secretary Shazia Marri warned that if the government did not decrease prices, there would be such a reaction that the "government will not be able to survive".

She called on the people to be prepared as the PPP would soon announce plans for protest. "Imran Khan gave people takleef instead of relief. The time for accountability has arrived," she said in a statement posted on Twitter.

"Imran Khan is taking anti-people steps to fulfil IMF's agenda ... Imran Khan, who used to associate rising petrol prices with the thievery of the rulers, tell us, is the recent increase an acknowledgement of your thievery?" she questioned.

Quipping that the premier's relief package was instead a 'takleef package', PML-N Information Secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb said the announcement on Wednesday was a "lie, fraud and deceit".

The price of sugar at Rs150 per kilo and petrol at Rs146 per litre after the relief package was akin to making a "mockery of the public", she said.

"The public knows your relief package is a relief only for your ATMs, mafia and cartels and a trouble for them," she said, adding, "You (Prime Minister Imran) cannot give any relief to the public. For God's sake, give the public your resignation."

Meanwhile, PPP Senator Bahramand Khan Tangi chose to protest the increase in petrol prices by cycling to parliament from Parliament Lodges.

"This selected and puppet prime minister has once again, in the darkness of the night, dropped a bomb of inflation and petrol on the public. I believe that this is a joke with the people and I appeal to the public of the entire country to come out."

Tangi said that despite being a parliamentarian, he no longer had the "power to purchase petrol".

While announcing the welfare package on Wednesday, Prime Minister Imran had acknowledged that inflation was a major problem in the country, saying the media and the opposition had the right to criticise the government.

But he said the media "needs to balance and think whether inflation is rising because of our government or due to rise in prices in the international market".

The prime minister noted that oil prices had risen by 100pc in the last 3-4 months internationally, while they had increased 33pc in Pakistan.

"When you say petrol is expensive, it is the cheapest in Pakistan, but we will have to increase the price because otherwise our deficit will increase and we will be further burdened by debt," he added.

LAHORE: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) submitted the challan against PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif and son Hamza Shehbaz to a special court on Monday for their alleged involvement in laundering an amount of Rs16 billion in the sugar scam case.

In another development, the agency claimed it had unearthed the role of a Bahraini woman in the saga at the behest of former finance minister Ishaq Dar.

“The investigation team has detected 28 benami accounts of the Shehbaz family through which money laundering of Rs16.3bn was committed during 2008-18. The FIA examined the money trail of 17,000 credit transactions,” according to an FIA report.

The amount was kept in “hidden accounts” and given to Shehbaz in a personal capacity, the report added.

This amount (Rs16bn) has nothing to do with the sugar business (of Shehbaz family). The money received from the accounts of low-wage employees by Shehbaz was transferred outside Pakistan via hundi/hawala networks, ultimately destined for beneficial use of his family members, the FIA alleged.

The report further said that in 1998 Sadiqa Syed, a Barhrain national, had helped Shehbaz Sharif (then chief minister of Punjab) in laundering $5 million with the help of Ishaq Dar (then federal finance minister).

The FIA has nominated Shehbaz Sharif and his sons — Hamza and Suleman — as the principal accused in the case. Fourteen others have been named in the FIR under sections 5(2) and 5(3) (criminal misconduct) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, read with 3/4 of the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

“Eleven low-paid employees of the Sharif group who ‘held and possessed’ the laundered proceeds on behalf of the principal accused, are found guilty of facilitating money laundering. The three other co-accused of the Sharif group also actively facilitated the money laundering,” the agency said.

The benami accounts, which had deposits totalling Rs16.3bn, were not declared by the principal accused, according to the FIA.

“The onus of proving pecuniary resources disproportionate to known sources of income and acquired ostensibly through improper means, lies on public servants,” it said.

“Shehbaz Sharif, then CM of Punjab and Hamza, then an MNA, were given ample opportunities during investigation to explain the same. However, due to their persistent evasive attitude and total non-cooperation, they missed the opportunities.

“The exact role and guilt of Suleman will be determined upon his arrest/surrender, but the evidence suggests that he aided and abetted his brother Hamza and thus found guilty of same offence.”

The investigation agency further said Mr Shehbaz was so “non-cooperative” during questioning that when he was asked which of his sons controlled the Sharif group and Ramzan Sugar Mills (RSML), he expressed his ignorance.

“He said he did not know the reasons behind Suleman’s absconding to the United Kingdom. Similarly, Hamza’s non-cooperation with FIA was such that he even denied having knowledge of who deposited funds into his personal accounts.

“As CEO of the Sharif group/RSML, all record was under Hamza’s custody, but he extended no cooperation, purposefully, to frustrate the investigation.”

The report said Suleman Shehbaz, who had left the country for Britain in October 2018, was served three notices but he did not respond.

“The investigation of this case entails unwinding of a complex financial matrix of layering/mega money laundering of billions of rupees. Hence it was very time-consuming and wide in scope.

“Despite the evasive and non-cooperative attitude of the accused, the investigation team detected 57 very high turnover fictitious ID/benami bank accounts in the name of individuals and fictitious business entities having over 55,000 inward (credit) and outward (debit) transactions between 2008 and 2018,” the agency said.

Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza have secured pre-arrest bail in the case till Dec 16.

Earlier, the FIA had accused the prime suspects of money laundering worth Rs25bn, but in the final report it said it was able to collect evidence for Rs16.3bn.

In a press release, Marriyum Aurangzeb, the PML-N’s information secretary, accused the Imran Khan-led government of trying to send Shehbaz Sharif to jail.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry on Sunday said that the incumbent government will file a petition against the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and the PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif in the Lahore High Court (LHC).

In conversation with the BBC Urdu, the minister maintained that the government would take legal action against Shehbaz and file a petition.

Fawad said that an affidavit was submitted by Shehbaz in a court decision to send his brother and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif to London for medical treatment, wherein the PML-N president had guaranteed his brother's return to Pakistan.

“The court should have taken suo moto notice of the matter and summoned Mian Shehbaz Sharif but no action has been taken by the Lahore High Court thus far," Fawad said, adding that due to this, the federal government has decided to file an application in the LHC to initiate court proceedings against him.

It is to be noted that Shehbaz in an affidavit submitted to the LHC had ensured that Nawaz would return to Pakistan from London after his full recovery.

The affidavit stated that the PML-N supremo would travel abroad for treatment for four weeks and if his health was restored during this period he would return to Pakistan.

It further claimed that during that period, Nawaz's medical reports will be sent to the registrar of the LHC after verification by the London High Commission.

It also said that if the federal government discovered that Nawaz was staying in London, despite being healthy, then personnel from the High Commission could meet the convicted former premier's physician and inquire about his health.

Separately, the PML-N leader also submitted an affidavit to the court wherein he stated that he was bound to abide by the affidavit submitted by Shehbaz.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said on Saturday the federal government would file a case in the Lahore High Court (LHC) next week against Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif for submitting a false affidavit.

Addressing a press conference along with Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood and Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Youth Affairs Usman Dar, Chaudhry said that Shahbaz Sharif should go to jail for submitting the false affidavit.

“Shahbaz Sharif should forget about becoming the prime minister. Even he should worry about his [National Assembly] seat because he can not even become an MNA. In this case, there is disqualification for five years,” Chaudhry said.

The minister said that Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz had been convicted in accountability cases, whereas the cases of Shahbaz Sharif and his son, Hamza Sharif, were in courts. “Within the next six to eight months some big fish will be out of the race in the next elections,” he added.

He said that more than Rs12 billion had been recovered from former president Asif Zardari in the Omni Accounts case, “so the claim that no achievements have been made in accountability process was not a fact”. He added that people’s demand for swift accountability was justified.

Responding to a question about the long marches announced by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) next month and the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) in March, the minister said that the opposition’s politics lacked any objective. “The so-called long march of the opposition in fact would be a mess.”

He pointed out that ideologies of the PDM President Fazlur Rehman, PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari do not match. “If the opposition came to Islamabad, the government will set up separate tents for them, so that they do not fight with each other,” he added.

Chaudhry said that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government wanted uniform local government system, adding however, that the allies had suggested that there should be direct elections at the district level in Punjab.

A banking court in Lahore granted one-week protective bails to National Assembly Opposition Leader Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz in a case pertaining to money laundering worth Rs25 billion being probed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

Though it admitted the bail plea, the judge asked Shehbaz and his son to approach the relevant court for fresh bail pleas as the case was being transferred at the request of the FIA.

The court also returned a challan submitted by the FIA in the said case, saying the matter does not fall in the jurisdiction of this case. The decision was made in connection to the request of the FIA wherein it had asked the court to transfer this case to a relevant court. The FIA made this request after it emerged that the bankers were not part of the money laundering case.

Amjad Pervez request the court to grant bail to the duo as he criticised the FIA for lack of progress in the investigation. He said initially the FIA had sought time to complete the investigation and then it turned the accused into witnesses.

The FIA’s version has nothing to do with reality, the lawyer said in the bail application. The accused have been booked in the case as the government wanted to “humiliate” them. The allegations levelled on them by the concerned quarters are quite false and incorrect, the lawyer added.

According to the bail plea, the FIA issued the accused a notice on June 22 to join the investigation even though the NAB had already carried out an investigation over the same allegations.

The accused wanted to appear before the investigation team but they feared being arrested as in the past when they had been summoned in a different case but arrested over another matter, the plea said, asking the court to approve the bail plea.

ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed while citing some documents claimed that PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif was “more corrupt” than his elder brother and former premier Nawaz Sharif.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Friday, Rashid took a swipe at the Sharif family, saying that they no longer have any role in country’s politics while asking them to “stop waiting for any good opportunity”.

Rashid said that the country’s political arena would not be affected whether Nawaz, who has been living in London since 2019, return to Pakistan or not.

“All four Sharifs are minus from country’s politics,” he added.

He said that the PTI-led government would complete its tenure and expressed the confidence that it will form the next government too.

The minister said that opposition parties were disappointed since the present government was successfully running the state affairs against their wishes.

He said that the government had already completed its three and half-year tenure while the opposition still needed its “warm-up time” ahead of next general elections in 2023.

“The opposition has been saying since last year that PTI is going to lose power, but it should clear any misunderstanding about the government. Prime Minister Imran Khan is so lucky to have got such incompetent and ineffective opposition,” he remarked.

He said the opposition had no vision to understand the prevailing situation and they had selected the wrong time for holding the protest. “They have already missed their chance and now they will get nothing but waste time.”

“We will welcome them and won’t try to stop them or take any action against their protests,” he added.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Hussain on Wednesday said that PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif and vice president Maryam Nawaz had orchestrated the drama of no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan for fleeing from country.

“The purpose of no-trust move by Shehbaz and Maryam is nothing but only to get a chance for going abroad, but we will not let them succeed in such attempts until they return the looted public money,” the information minister said.

Fawad made these remarks while addressing a condolence reference in memory of senior journalist Rahimullah Yousafzai and Editor-in-Chief of Daily Frontier Star Professor Dr Hafiz Sanaullah here at the Peshawar Press Club.

READ Bilawal, Maryam ‘political infants’: Fawad

He said ironically, the opposition parties were “comprised political dwarfs”, who did not carry out research on major socio-economic issues and eventually became a source of “fake news”.

The information minister said that the PPP and the PML-N, while in power for 10 years, during their respective tenures, had taken loans of Rs23 trillion. The country in fact was plagued with a “decade of darkness”, he added.

“Some Rs6 trillion loans were taken from 1947 to 2006 and spent on the construction of Islamabad, purchase of Gwadar, equipping the armed forces, and developing roads infrastructure.”

He said the present government had to borrow money for repaying the loans of $18 billion, taken by the past governments, in the next two years.

Appreciating the people of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa for reposing confidence in the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan, Fawad said the political journey of “change” had started from the province in 2013, which helped to abolish the two-party system in the country.

It was unprecedented that the PTI was again given a two-third majority in the 2018 general elections, he added.

Fawad maintained that the government was striving to transform Pakistan into a true Islamic social welfare state on the pattern of Riyast-e-Madina for the socio-economic emancipation of the downtrodden and under-privileged.

It was PM Imran who had made serious efforts to put the country in the right direction, he added.
“Revolutionary Sehat Sahulat Card programme has been launched in Khyber-Pakthunkhwa, Punjab, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir to provide every person free treatment of up to rupees one million in the country’s top hospitals.”

To ebb away inflation and price hike, he said, the PM’s Ration Subsidy Programme was launched under which 30% subsidy on essential commodities was being given to the poor segments of the society.

“Such projects have laid a strong foundation for the establishment of a true Islamic social welfare state in the country.”

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif has said that he amassed assets in the United Kingdom because he “could not live there under the patronage of Queen" and asserted he has accounted for every penny he accumulated in the country.

The opposition leader appeared before the accountability court in Lahore in connection with a money laundering case.

During the hearing, Shehbaz claimed that all institutions “ganged up” to mine for evidence against him “but could not find anything” even as the case dragged on for almost two years. The government even went on to freeze my accounts and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) kept me in detention, he recalled.

“Now the truth has emerged as clear as crystal,” he claimed.Shehbaz said that he was accused of corruption in a grant when he had actually “saved the poor man’s Rs1,000 billion”, and initiated development projects for them at the lowest of tenders.

He said that he himself made it a point to negotiate with companies to minimise the bidding. “If there was no sense of public money, I would have given the same project for millions,” he said. “Even if I go to the grave, facts will not change.”

He said that when he tried to return to Pakistan from the UK in 2004, an investigation was launched against him and his son Suleman Shehbaz there.

A Lahore court on Friday delayed the indictment of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif and others in a money laundering case while extending his bail till February 28.

Special court Judge Ijazul Ahsan Awan presided over the hearing of a case against Shehbaz and others for their alleged involvement in laundering around Rs16 billion in the sugar scam case.

During the hearing, the counsel representing the PML-N leader said the copies of the challan shared by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) were not legible due to their poor print quality.

“The bank officials did not share the copies of 164 statements with the team,” the counsel added.

The court ordered the FIA to share new copies with Shehbaz’s legal team and adjourned the hearing till February 28.

After the hearing, the PML-N president while talking to media outside the court said that the National Assembly session was postponed because of the date of his indictment given by the court last week.

Shehbaz said the FIA had wanted the court to change the indictment date. “They wanted to change the date so 'I could not skip the hearing on account of the NA session’,” he added.

“However, the government has changed the date of the assembly session,” mentioned Shehbaz, adding that the government wanted to frame the charges against him today but “Allah is almighty”.

Last week, a special court in Lahore had decided to indict the PML-N president, his sons Hamza and Suleman and others on February 18 (today) for their alleged involvement in laundering around Rs16 billion in the sugar scam case.

The FIA had booked Shehbaz, Hamza and Suleman Shehbaz in November 2020 under sections 419, 420, 468, 471, 34 and 109 — financial fraud, impersonation and forgery — of the Pakistan Penal Code and 5(2) and 5(3) — criminal misconduct — of Prevention of Corruption Act and r/w 3/4 of Anti Money Laundering Act.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Monday sought contempt and day-to-day proceedings against five accused including Leader of the Opposition Shehbaz Sharif over not only interrupting the court and submitting irrelevant applications to escape from charge framing but also wasting its precious time.

As the proceedings commenced, the special central court judge, extending pre-arrest bails by March 10 of accused Shehbaz and his son Hamza Shehbaz in alleged money laundering case, sought arguments from both sides on FIA’s application wherein day-to-day proceeding was sought.

The Sharif family’s counsel Senator Azam Nazir Tarar termed the FIA’s move as an attempt to affect the long march which the opposition parties have planned to oust Prime Minister Imran Khan.

It is worth mentioning that the Special Court Central was hearing pre-arrest bails of the aforementioned accused persons in the alleged money laundering case of Rs25 billion.

Tarar argued that it seemed the FIA is in a hurry that is why they submitted an application for day-to-day proceedings. He argued that the only purpose of the FIA behind the move is to affect the long march of the opposition parties.

Meanwhile, FIA’s prosecutor told the court that the accused persons have been delivered case copies that are visible to read. However, the central court judge observed that the first charges will be framed then the application for day-to-day proceedings will be decided.

Contempt proceedings

Meanwhile, the FIA submitted another application seeking contempt proceedings against five accused including Shehbaz.

The FIA submitted that Shehbaz not only interrupted the court, submitted irrelevant applications merely to linger on the matter but also wasted the court’s precious time.

The FIA contended that in earlier proceedings the charges were to be framed on accused Shehbaz and Hamza but the opposition leader in NA interrupted the court and started a long speech as a result of which the court’s precious time was wasted.

It said that most irrelevant applications were also filed merely to linger on the matter and to escape from charge framing. The FIA further contended in its petition that the accused person’s act falls under contempt of court. The investigation agency asked the court to initiate contempt proceedings against the aforementioned accused.

Pre-arrest bails

Petitioners Shehbaz and Hamza in their bails had contended that the version of the FIA has nothing to do with reality. They submitted that they had been implicated in forged case merely to humiliate them and the allegations levelled on them by the concerned quarters are quite false and incorrect.

They implored the court that the FIA issued them notice of June 22 to join the investigation while the truth is that the NAB had already carried investigation on the same allegation of money laundering.

They added that they wanted to appear before the investigation team but they feared being arrested at the hands of FIA as there are examples relating to their arrests when they had been summoned in different cases but arrested in another matter.

So we have a potential convict as the upcoming PM of Pakistan.

So we have a potential convict as the upcoming PM of Pakistan.

Nothing is going to happen. Our Judiciary will not convict anyone, NAB doesnt bring cases to court, each hearing is about 6 months apart and the whole thing is a sham. We are a mafia state with the full connivance of the elite bar IK

As the faces get blackened, we can see why NAB wasn't prosecuting anyone. The elite saved their own. We saw it with Mush and we are seeing it now

A special court judge rejecting FIA's plea granted PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif an exemption from personal appearance before the court following his engagement at the Supreme Court of Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the judge also rejected FIA’s bail cancellation application that it had filed on the ground that no legal provision is available that gives concession to an accused to be absent from court at the bail stage.

The judge was hearing the pre-arrest bails of Shehbaz and his son Hamza Shahbaz Sharif in an alleged money laundering case of Rs25 billion.

As the proceedings commenced today, Shehbaz’s counsel submitted an application seeking exemption for him from personal appearance as the opposition leader was busy in the country’s top court following the constitutional crises.

However, the FIA strongly opposed the version of the counsel contending the court that the SC had not summoned Shehbaz in person in any matter.

FIA produced a copy of the SC’s order at which Shehbaz’s counsel raised questions as to how the copy could be considered a valid document.

The FIA’s prosecutor ensured the court that this court may pass an order for registration of an FIR against him if it proves false.

Shehbaz’s counsel implored the court that his client has to file a writ petition in SC following the ongoing constitutional crises.

Shedding light on FIA’s fresh bail cancellation application, the counsel further argued that it was very interesting that the authority had taken notice of the application which the FIA submitted two days before on the ground that no legal provision was available that gave a concession to an accused to be absent from court at the bail stage.

He also prayed to the court that his client is granted exemption from the personal appearance.

Bail cancelation application

The FIA’s representatives also submitted an application contending that Shehbaz remained absent a number of times from court due to his ailment or his engagements in political activities which were absolutely not justified.

"On March 25, 2022, the accused Shehbaz Sharif remained absent from the court an application for dispensation of attendance was moved on his behalf and this court was pleased to dispense with the attendance of the accused in bail proceedings," the application stated.

It added that the "citation relied upon the accused Shehbaz Sharif and this court is misunderstood and misinterpreted by the counsel of the accused and this court dispensed with the attendance of the accused from personal appearance. The counsel for the accused has wrongly assisted the court in order to obtain a pre-interim order on March 25, 2022".

FIA prayed to the court that said order be recalled and the bail is dismissed.

Pre-arrest bails

Petitioners Shehbaz and his son Hamza in their pre-arrest bails had contended that the version of the FIA had nothing to do with reality.

They submitted that they had been implicated in a forged case merely to humiliate them and the allegations levelled on them by the concerned quarters are false and incorrect.

SLAMABAD: PML-N President and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif on Tuesday asked Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and DG ISI to present evidence before the nation on whether the Opposition leaders have committed treason.

Speaking to journalists outside the premises of the Supreme Court, Shahbaz reiterated that none of the Opposition leaders have committed treason. “We did not invite any foreign power and neither are we involved in any foreign conspiracy,” he said, adding that this issue should be clarified.

“I demand COAS and DG ISI to take notice of this issue and produce evidence in the Supreme Court if we have committed treason,” Shahbaz said, adding that he has never spoken such clear words before.

The PML-N leader said he will also present this request in front of the Supreme Court, “we will put this demand forward through our lawyers that please review this matter and create a forum in which the matter is clarified.”

Recalling their previous demands, he said: “We have been raising this issue for last three-and-a-half years that this government and the prime minister is illegal.”

He complained that when the joint Opposition submitted a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan practising its constitutional right the former PTI-led government raised the issue of “foreign conspiracy.”

The Opposition leader said: “It is now time for the army officials, who have made innumerable sacrifices, to clarify whether the National Security Committee (NSC) passed a resolution in which the role of Opposition in the ‘foreign conspiracy’ is stated.”

“Did they sign those minutes? See if it has the approval of the establishment?” he questioned.

Replying to a question regarding the formation of the caretaker government, the PML-N leader said that he has not received President Arif Alvi’s letter in this regard, adding that first, they want the Supreme Court to resolve the issue of the unconstitutional step taken by the president and prime minister and then they [the Opposition] will talk about other matters.

He said that if the matter isn’t resolved, the country will become a “Banana Republic”.

Lol what a bunch of jokers. They really are having issues dealing with this counter attack.

I'm also shocked these guys just get to walk around freely even though they have cases against them..

ISLAMABAD: A special court in Lahore will resume tomorrow (Monday) hearing of a money laundering case against Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif, his son Hamza and other accused.

The Federal Ministry of Law has restrained the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) special prosecutor from appearing in court tomorrow.

The hearing will coincide with a session of the National Assembly that has been convened to elect the new prime minister. The NA Secretariat has issued a single-item ‘Orders of the Day’ for the session that will commence at 2pm.

PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif and PTI vice president Shah Mahmood Qureshi are in the run for the coveted post of the prime minister.

The nomination papers of Shehbaz, the Opposition Leader in the National Assembly, and PTI candidate Qureshi have been accepted. The PTI raised objections to Shehbaz’s nomination but these were rejected by the Speaker Office.

Shehbaz Sharif and his family are facing charges of laundering billions of rupees using accounts of their sugar mills and employees, according to the FIA.

Pakistan’s Shehbaz Sharif submits nomination to become new PM

Pakistan opposition politician Shehbaz Sharif has submitted his nomination to be the country’s next prime minister.

The younger brother of three-times prime minister Nawaz Sharif, 70-year-old Shehbaz led the opposition efforts in parliament that eventually toppled now former Prime Minister Imran Khan in the early hours of Sunday morning.

After submitting his nomination to the legislature on Sunday, Shehbaz said Khan’s departure was a chance for a new beginning in Pakistan. Shehbaz, the centrist Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) party chief, is widely expected to be named the country’s new prime minister on Monday.

“A new dawn has started … This alliance will rebuild Pakistan,” Shehbaz told parliament on Sunday. His first tasks will be to repair relations with the powerful military as well as the United States, and tend to a faltering economy.

Khan had antagonised the US throughout his tenure, welcoming the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan last year and more recently accusing Washington of being behind the attempt to remove him. Washington dismissed the accusation.

Khan’s party has also nominated the former foreign minister as a prime ministerial candidate, saying their members of parliament would resign en masse should he lose, potentially creating the need for urgent by-elections for their seats.

The first Pakistani prime minister to be removed by a no-confidence vote, Khan had clung on for almost a week after a united opposition first tried to remove him.

On Sunday, he repeated allegations that a foreign conspiracy was behind a conspiracy of regime change in Pakistan.

“The freedom struggle begins again today,” he said via his Twitter account, which is followed by more than 15 million and still describes him as prime minister of Pakistan in his biography section.

Youth Support

Tens of thousands of Khan supporters marched in cities across Pakistan on Sunday, waving large party flags and vowing support. The youth, who make up the backbone of Khan’s supporters, dominated the crowds.

In the southern Arabian Sea port city of Karachi more than 20,000 shouted slogans promising Khan’s return to power.

In the capital of Islamabad, the lights from thousands of supporters lit up the night sky as Khan made his way through the crowd atop a brightly coloured truck.

In the aftermath of Sunday’s vote, giant steel containers stacked on top of each other blocked main roads leading to Parliament and to the diplomatic enclave in the capital of Islamabad.

Khan had called on his supporters to gather late Sunday, after the end of the daily dawn-to-dusk fast during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The ousted prime minister has claimed the US worked behind the scenes to bring him down, purportedly because of Washington’s displeasure over his independent foreign policy choices, which often favoured China and Russia.

He has occasionally defied America and stridently criticised America’s post 9/11 war on terror. Khan said Washington was deeply disturbed by his visit to Russia and his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 24, the start of the devastating war in Ukraine.

The US State Department has denied his allegations.

Should he have to appear in court or take the oath? Constitutionally what's more important? Lol

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s rule finally succumbed to a parliamentary revolt in the wee hours of Sunday. Out of many hands that thumped the desks after dealing a final fatal blow to the regime, a few of them happened to be too familiar with the tethers – both literally and metaphorically – of Imran Khan’s accountability drive.

The striking memory of Khan’s rule to linger for years - at least in the minds of his rivals - will be that of his aggressive accountability drive against political opponents, particularly the Sharifs who remained embroiled in corruption cases and were at times consequently locked away.

In December 2019, the National Accountability Bureau seized nearly two dozen properties belonging to Sharif and his son Hamza, accusing them of money laundering.

He was arrested and detained in September 2020, but released around six months later on bail for a trial which is still pending.

However, the supporters of the 70-year-old have charged that the graft cases against him stemmed from a political vendetta by Imran Khan and therefore, devoid of any substance.

Merely a few days before being ousted, the embattled Imran Khan-led government decided to challenge the bail order of the opposition leader.

The PML-N president, who is expected to be the 23rd prime minister of the country, was released on bail in April 2021 in the money-laundering case. A special court (Central-I) of FIA is likely to indict Shehbaz and Hamza in a Rs14 billion money laundering case on Monday (April 11).

However, the case now faces uncertainty as the Federal Investigation Agency Lahore chief, who is probing the money laundering cases against the father-son duo, has gone on leave for an indefinite period.

In September 2020, Sharif was arrested by the NAB after the Lahore High Court rejected his bail plea in the same case. Shehbaz was taken into custody from the court's premises, where a large number of PML-N workers and supporters had gathered ahead of the hearing.

However, on most occasions, doors would be shut to the public during his court appearances, strictly disallowing anyone to enter the premises for as long as the proceedings continued.

Reacting to Shehbaz's arrest, PML-N vice president Maryam Nawaz, said in a tweet: "Make no mistake. Shehbaz Sharif has been arrested ONLY because he REFUSED to play in the hands of those who wanted to use him against his brother. He preferred standing behind prison bars than to stand against his brother."

‘Political victimisation’

In October 2018, in a dramatic turn of events, the country’s top accountability watchdog arrested Shehbaz Sharif over his alleged involvement in a multi-billion rupees housing scam, the Ashiyana-e-Iqbal Housing Project.

Shehbaz was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau inside its Lahore office where he was summoned to record his statement before a combined investigations team in connection with the Punjab Saaf Pani Company case.

The news of Shehbaz’s arrest came forth when his security staff and vehicle were sent back by NAB officials about 40 minutes after his arrival at the NAB office and spread like wildfire.

Right after the arrest, the security of the NAB office was beefed up. Extra contingents of police and rangers were deployed inside and outside the watchdog’s Lahore headquarters.

The arrest prompted protests of supporters and clamour against what the party alleged had been an act of ‘political victimisation’.

It is pertinent to mention that Shehbaz has not been found guilty on any charges.

They control the courts, the ECP, the FIA, the media but they'll never win the people's hearts. We are watching you SS, keep avoiding as long as you can. Your time is coming

The FIA team does not turn up to court. This isn't any Ordinary case, this involves 16bn in laundering. This is a case where the money trail for the laundering exists and they have no answer to. The Chaprasi had billions in his account, and today in court the FIA team didn't turn up. I wonder why?

The cases o the cases of NS and SS were created by AZ and vice versa. Can you confirm if they are allies today?

Didn't Imran pursue cases against MQM and later joined them in his coalition. Didn't Imran call Shiekh Rashid Sheeda Talli and said he wouldn't even keep his as a chaprasi in his house and then appointed him as a Minister in his government? Didn't Imran Khan call Pervaiz Elahi the biggest dako of Punjab and then proceeded to nominate him as his candidate for CM Punjab?

If these lot can form a coalition then anyone can don't you worry about that.

Which case? And as the NAB chairman was appointed by NS and AZ and prosecuted no one at all, but just created cases. But can you comment on who created the Noora and PPP cases? Look the Hudbiya case, or the Omni Group case, or ARY gold case. You need to do your research before talking rubbish on here

Why are you avoiding my questions? Didn't Imran Khan want cases opened against MQM leaderships in London? What did he say about Shiekh Rasheed? What about Pervaiz Elahi?

Jab ulti parthi hai tu sab kuch rubbish ho jata hai LOL

The MQM that he joined in coalition claimed that they weren't part of Altafs group.

So back to answering who created cases against NS, SS and AZ

So you have no answer, and want to run. Great. If that is the case why waste our time. As a self confessed Kaffir, Get the champagne and crack it open.

Run from what? From the fact that the two parties have let bygones be bygones and moved on similar to how Imran Khan affiliated himself with Shiekh Rasheed and Pervaiz Elahi.

Why are you lot crying so much?

So you have no answer, what a silly answer,Let bygones be bygones. I think you are confusing this with a play ground fight. It shows what low levels of morality and high levels of illegality you guys operate at. Obviously the constitution takes a back burner when you get owned by me. I quite enjoy making mince meat out of mental midgets

Its pretty much the same thing Imran did with Pervaiz Elahi and Shiekh Rasheed. It works both ways. For you guys, it's only fair if you do it but when someone else does it you suddenly start crying foul.

But IK didn't create cases against these 2. Your guys created real cases against each other and people went down. So now you are accusing them of creating fake cases or aren't you. Such is the confusing nature of your arguments that I think you need to sober up before you can argue with me.

The cases were created and those who were found guilty were disqualified. For others, they are innocent until proven guilty. Not sure what your point is. What does one thing have to do with another.

If an individual is found guilty by the court he/she will cease to hold public office regardless of who created the cases. The parties are beyond just individuals and for the betterment of Pakistan they have come together regardless of what happens to individuals against whom cases are still pending.

No they weren't. SS was accused in the Hudbiya case, the evidence was found by the late Rehman Malik. In the Omni Group case, AZ and Billo were both beneficiaries and they are sitting in Parliament. NS and Maryam went down over the Panama revelations and they only confirmed what we knew. You have such little knowledge of these cases that your arguments are silly.

So? If the court finds him guilty he will not be able to hold public office. He is innocent until proven guilty

How can the court find him guilty if the FIA have been ordered not attend. That's where you veneer wears off and you openly become the enablers of criminals.

He's on bail. And the court that's supposed to be convicting him is helping him avoid thr hearings

I don't know if you're acting ignorant on purpose or are you really like this? Anyone can make a case against anyone. It does not mean that they are guilty. People are deemed innocent until proven guilty in the court of law. If some of those cases amounted to nothing, it meant there was no sufficient evidence to back up the claims made. It's as simple as that.

All of this has nothing to do with the coalition of PDM.

More false accusations. More lies from PTI supporters. Why would I expect any different.

Do you have any proof to back up the accusations you make?

FIA team sent on holiday. Any chance the CJP will open at midnight to find out why? Thought not. Pimps of the rich

Obviously not. CJP will open courts at night if it is something which is potentially damaging to the whole nation not because FIA is on holiday. You need to understand the difference between the two things.

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif's application seeking exemption from personal appearance in today's proceedings of the money laundering case was accepted by Special Court Central Judge Ijaz Hassan Awan on Monday.

The application, submitted on the PML-N leader's behalf, sought the exemption owing to today's National Assembly session in which he is contesting for the post of prime minister.

The court had fixed April 11 for indicting Shehbaz and his son, Hamza Shahbaz, in an alleged Rs25 billion money laundering case.

The prosecuting team of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) also did not appear before the court for arguments on the said application.

The court adjourned the case till April 27 and extended the PML-N leaders interim bail.

In earlier proceedings, the court had rejected the FIA’s plea for granting Shehbaz an exemption from personal appearance before the court. That court at that time had also accepted Shehbaz’s application for granting him exemption from personal appearance.

It is worth mentioning that the court at that time had also rejected FIA’s application wherein the bail cancellation of Shehbaz was sought on the grounds that no law provision was available that gave concession to an accused to be absent from court at bail stage.

Bail cancellation application

The FIA’s representatives had submitted an application before a special central court judge contending that Shehbaz remained absent from this court a number of times, sometimes owing to his ailment, on others owing to his engagements in political activities, which is absolutely not justified and is akin to making a mockery of the law.

Read: Uncertainty looms over cases against Shehbaz
On March 25, the accused remained absent from the court, an application for dispensation of attendance was moved on his behalf and this court was pleased to dispense with the attendance of the accused in bail proceedings.

"That the citation relied upon the accused Shehbaz and this court is misunderstood and misinterpreted by the counsel of the accused and this court dispensed with the attendance of the accused from personal appearance. The counsel for the accused has wrongly assisted the court in order to obtain a pre-inqurium order on March 25, 2022," the court observed.

The FIA prayed to the court that the said order be recalled and the bail be dismissed.

Pre-arrest bails

Petitioners Shehbaz and his son Hamza in their pre-arrest bails had contended that the version of the FIA has nothing to do with reality.

They submitted that they had been implicated in a forged case merely to humiliate them and the allegations levelled on them by the concerned quarters are quite false and incorrect.

They implored the court that FIA issued them notices on June 22 to join the investigation while the truth is that the NAB had already carried investigation on the same allegation of money laundering.

They added that they wanted to appear before the investigation team but they feared being arrested at the hands of FIA as there are examples relating to their arrests when they had been summoned in a different nature case but arrested in another matter.

Someone with Pending MONEY LAUNDERING CASES IS ELECTED PM. Let that sink in. He is now PM of the country, what a joke. This would never happen in the western world. This is unbelievable. Makes me sick to my stomach

So? If the court finds him guilty he will not be able to hold public office. He is innocent until proven guilty

He won’t be found guilty now he is the PM. He will pay everyone off. The same way his brother used to. Corrupt criminals. You are celebrating him, you make me sick.

PK has had many terrible days but when a guy has to miss court to take the oath shames us all. A man that should be in prison for stealing billions will be the moral compass for a nation of 230mn. Let that sink in
