Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) backed independent candidate Yasir Zafar Sindhu has won the PP-30 Sargodha by-election, defeating Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) Sajid Mehmood by over 24,000 votes.

According to unofficial results from all 137 polling stations, Sindhu bagged 52,038 votes while Mehmood secured 27,619 votes, Express News reported.

The balloting started early Sunday morning amid heavy security as 19 polling stations were declared sensitive, and concluded at 5pm.

Sindhu was contesting as an independent candidate following the Supreme Court’s February 21 order, in which it not only barred former prime minister Nawaz Sharif from heading the party he founded but also declared null and void all decisions he took after his disqualification as a lawmaker by the apex court last year in Panama Papers case.

And since nomination papers of all PML-N candidates were signed by Sharif, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had announced that they will be considered as ‘independent’ in all elections leading to the upcoming general election including Saturday’s Senate election.

PTI candidate Mehmood had recently joined the party after parting ways with the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F).

The provincial assembly seat fell vacant due to the demise of Chaudhry Tahir Sindhu. The constituency has around 173,919 registered voters – 98,145 male and 75, 774 female voters.

From 3700 votes in 2013 to 23,500 votes in 2018 now thats an achievement against a sitting goverment. To all those criticizing PTI losing most of the by election against sitting goverment of PMLN should check how many by elections PMLN won against sitting most corrupt goverment of PPP from 2008 to 2013? PTI still won more then a few seats in by elections and showed great fight on other seats.

Actually this is a very good example from 2013 elections:

PMLN: 37000
PTI: 3700

Now people think PTI should not accept electables, well look what happened when they had limited number of electables. Similar performance was seen in hundreds of other constituencies and as per these people PTI was at peak of their popularity. Election dynamics are way different and hardly anyone in rural areas care about party ideology.

Same guy got 974 votes when he ran as independent in 2013 and now he got 23.5k votes in byelections.

That is the power of Khan.

Another good news is Khan is having a very successful visit of Karachi and this time the timing was the important factor when MQM is busy in their own fights within the party and collapsing. Syed1 Khan is standing from Karachi too in GE2018

I know.... but I'm concerned about that decision. Hear me out first...

PTI has pretty much a confirmed seat from Defense/Clifton area where the majority of educated elite/upper middle class resides. Dr. Arif Alvi won from here and frankly speaking there is nothing to suggest that he won't win again. He probably doesn't need Khan's support to get re-elected.

Now this is where my concern comes in, will Khan run from this seat and possibly take a confirmed PTI seat that another PTI candidate would have managed to secure on their own?

Or is Khan going to run from some other locality and possibly steal a MQM/PPP seat?

The latter is obviously the much much better option. Interesting times ahead.

I don't see why Imran Khan would run from Defense/Clifton when Dr Alvi is so popular there. I would agree that Imran should probably run somewhere where MQM or PPP would supposedly win. Even if he does not win the seat, him running from Karachi is bound to create some waves which will flow onto other seats.

I am quite sure he won't run from NA250 because Arif Alvi has been quite active there.

Most probably he will stand from a stronghold of MQM where PSP will also dent MQM vote bak and the split vote will help PTI. I know it's almost impossible to win from Balochistan for PTI but i would love to see Imran standing against Achakzai in Pashtun belt. He should stand on 4 seats (from each province, last time he was standing on 3 seats from punjab alone and 1 from kp and won 3 of them)

I would love to see Khurram Sherzaman in NA but Alvi is already there in NA250 and Khurram is MPA under him : (

Khurram Sherzaman has been brilliant but i highly he will be preferred over his senior colleague Arif Alvi unless Alvi gets more important or senior role.

Seems like PTI has put the car in gear now.... no more dormant sitting around and letting the Sharifs have their way. Khan needs to go to every district of the country down to corner meetings level and bring his message to the people. May Allah help him. It is going to be tough, but I know he is a fighter he will never give up.

True

I recently came to know they even run a website for their constituency to keep local voters updated http://www.na250.com/
