PML-N workers and police clashed on Tuesday outside a National Accountability Bureau (NAB) office in Lahore where party leader Maryam Nawaz had arrived to record her statement in a case related to “illegal” acquisition of land in Raiwind.

The scene outside the building turned violent when the PML-N leader’s caravan, which included several cars and hundreds of supporters on foot, reached outside the NAB premises on Multan road.

Television footage showed men in plain clothes pelting stones at law enforcers, who were also seen assaulting some PML-N workers with batons, water cannons and tear gas. Several television channels also showed footage and pictures of cars, purportedly part of the PML-N caravan, laden with bags full of stones.

Dozens of party workers were also seen being taken into custody by police from the site. According to the PML-N spokesperson, at least 50 workers were arrested by police during the clash.

lol..I couldn't stop laughing when you said that.

on a serious note , it seems the PMLN just decide to do thoar phoar when they dont like or agree with something or somebody, e.g. model town, court attack etc etc.

Have the Pakistani people moved on yet or are we still stuck in this type of stupidity?

Maryam brought thugs with weapons to a questioning session on how she acquired land in 2013, when she told us she didn't have any property at all. The Nooras have a history, remember these thugs attacked the SC.

Punjab govt blames Maryam Nawaz for clashes outside NAB office

The Punjab government on Tuesday said action will be taken against those involved in stone-pelting and damaging state property outside the Lahore office of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) at the time of Maryam Nawaz's appearance in a land purchase case.

Punjab Minister for Law Raja Basharat said PML-N has repeated its "history of attacking the Supreme Court", adding that constitutional institutions and law enforcement agencies are not safe from the PML-N's "hooligans".

Maryam Nawaz was summoned in an individual capacity, but she brought a rally here, Basharat said.

"The government took all measures to establish its writ and action will be taken against all those who gathered there illegally and those who pelted stones at police officers stationed there," he said.

Basharat said that stones were brought under the security protocol of Maryam. After reaching the area, they were distributed among workers and thrown at NAB and police.

"Maryam claims that she was summoned to cause her harm, no. You were called to answer for the crimes you have committed," he said.

Some unidentified people have been arrested, while others are being identified through CCTV footage. "Cases will be registered against PML-N workers who injured police officers and caused damage to government property."

"This is not a claim anymore everything was shown on the media. The government will take its case forward on the footage provided by media," he said.

Action will be taken against all those nominated, arrested, and others involved, as it is the responsibility of the government to do so.

"All of this was done on the behest of Maryam," he added.

'Suicide attack on Shehbaz's politics'

Punjab Minister for Information Fayyaz ul Hassan Chohan said that for the first time in 20 years since the establishment of NAB, the glasses of the anti-graft watchdog's building have been broken and that Maryam has carried forward her family's traditions of "launching attacks" against LEAs.

Maryam's move is the outcome of the internal politics of her party. "Neither will I play, nor will I let anyone play, this is what Maryam had in mind when she came [to appear before NAB]," he said.

The minister claimed that this act was a "suicide attack" on Shehbaz Sharif and Hamza Shehbaz's politics, and she has "ended the politics of PML-N".

Chohan claimed that nearly Rs1 million were distributed among people at Jati Umra.

"Every worker who pelted stones was awarded Rs25,000, those who threw stones at Maraym's car were given Rs100,000 in advance," he said, adding that all of this was done on Pervez Rashid's advice.

"It took them eight days to come up with this plan as none of their workers — except for 30, 40 — were ready to partake in the rally today," he said.

"Maryam's negative personality, approach, school of thought has led to the decline to Sharif family's politics, business, government, and respect," he said.

Responding to Maryam's press conference, he said that she had raised the issue of Kashmir as her politics had "failed".

Lahore clashes echo in NA

Lambasting the government for the violence against the PML-N workers earlier in the day, former foreign minister Khawaja Asif said that thousands of people who had gathered near the NAB office would have been dispersed peacefully if Maryam was allowed to appear before the court to record her statement.

"Our party workers were ruthlessly attacked with teargas and stones," he lashed out.

Noting that there is usually a heavy contingent of police deployed near the office already, the PML-N stalwart said: "Who would dare to engage in violence in the presence of security forces. The Punjab government deteriorated the situation."

The PML-N leader went on to add that the rest of the opposition leaders have also condemned today's incident and demanded that the detained workers be freed.

"If nothing will be done to counter the current situation, then the incumbent government will be responsible for the consequences," he added.

Responding to Asif's allegations, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Quereshi said that the question is why did such an incident happen in the first place?

"There should be an investigation of the incident. I don't think that the Punjab government or anyone else benefited from it," he said, adding that police are usually hesitant to get involved in such an incident.

The federal minister then said that other leaders have been appearing before the accountability watchdog in the past but no such incident ever took place, therefore, today's incident should be thoroughly investigated.

I sure hope you didn’t have the misfortune of hearing any of Maryam’s press conference, then.

The Sharif family members seem to think they are God’s gift to Pakistanis.

Seriously weak PM and ministers.

Interior minister is just tweeting about it. What the hell do your job baldy. In any western country the police would be kicking down the door of Maryam Safdar's house and dragging her to jail.

If a few 100 thugs can intimidate an elected govt, and it can't raise a finger then it's time to step aside. Here was a golden chance to let these thugs get the medicine their behaviour deserves. This is one of the worst days of this govts reign.

Yes truly saddened... Banana republic

1997, fathers of these thugs under the directions of Noora # 1 attacked and sacked Supreme Court Of Pakistan. Keep that in mind and no one (of note) was even charged with a crime let alone punished.

Yesterday, Maryam came with goons, several security cars.. And today CM Punjab came to NAB office without any security protocol, he came only in ONE car.

LAHORE: PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, her husband Safdar Awan and 188 party workers have been booked by police after clashes ensued out the office of the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) Lahore during Maryam’s appearance on Tuesday.

PML-N supporters and police engaged in violent clashes on Tuesday outside the Bureau’s office, where Maryam Nawaz had been summoned to respond in a case of alleged illegal transfer of government land.

Whilst police and the Punjab government claimed that it was an deliberate attempt on the PML-N leader's part to create anarchy, Maryam accused NAB and police of attacking the party's workers and pelting stones at her bulletproof car.

According to the police, a case against the PML-N leaders has been registered in the Chohang police station after NAB officials filed a case.

Nawaz, her husband Muhammad Safdar, Rana Sanaullah, Pervez Rashid, Zubair Mahmood, Javed Latif, Daniel Aziz and Pervez Malik have also been named in the first information report (FIR).

Police further said a case has been registered against 300 unidentified persons, including 188 PML-N workers, which includes violence against police personnel.

According to the FIR, 13 policemen were injured in the clashes yesterday.

PML-N workers sent to jail on 14-day judicial remand
Later, the PML-N workers who were arrested on Tuesday were sent to jail on a 14-day judicial remand for vandalism outside NAB’s office.

Fifty-six PML-N workers were presented before the judicial magistrate today along with the party’s legal team to secure bail for the arrested workers.

The investigating officer said that for a physical remand, interrogation of the arrested was necessary.

Rejecting the request for a physical remand, the court sent the PML-N workers to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.

NAB office turns into battleground
As many as two dozen of the party's workers were arrested, with the provincial government vowing to hold all those responsible after clashes erupted between PML-N leaders and police outside the NAB office on Tuesday.

In a video that she posted on Twitter, Maryam alleged that police pelted stones at her car which cracked her bulletproof vehicle's windshield. She also accused police of firing tear gas shells and baton-charging party workers.

NAB blames PML-N workers for 'organised hooliganism'
NAB Lahore had said that it had summoned the PML-N vice president to hear her stance on the case registered against her.

The Bureau alleged that PML-N workers pelted stones and were involved in "hooliganism" at the time of her appearance.

NAB said that it had been treated like this for the first time in the 20 years since the Bureau had been created, stating that its building's windows had been broken and staffers injured.

It announced that proceedings against Maryam had been postponed and it condemned PML-N workers for interfering in legal matters in an "organised" way.

As many as two dozen PML-N workers were arrested by police after the supporters dispersed.

Punjab government warns of consequences
Later, the PTI leadership in Punjab warned of action against those involved in pelting stones at the police personnel present outside the NAB office.

Punjab Minister for Law Raja Basharat said PML-N had repeated its "history of attacking the Supreme Court", adding that institutions and law enforcement agencies are not safe from the PML-N's "hooligans".

"The government took all necessary measures to establish its writ and action will be taken against all those who gathered there illegally and those who pelted stones at police officers stationed there," he had said.

Punjab Minister for Information Fayyaz ul Hassan Chohan had said that for the first time in 20 years since the establishment of NAB, the building's windows had been smashed. He accused Maryam of "carrying forward her family's traditions" of "launching attacks" against law enforcement.

Chohan claimed that nearly Rs1 million were distributed among people at Jati Umra prior to today's clashes.

CCPO blames PML-N for violence outside NAB Lahore office

LAHORE: Capital City Police Officer (CCPO) Zulfiqar Hameed has blamed PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, senior party leaders and charged workers for the violence outside the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) office on Aug 11, while it is yet to be ascertained who is responsible for creating a law and order situation.

In a ‘classified’ report sent to the Punjab government, the CCPO has used “hooliganism” for the act of PML-N leaders and workers, blaming them for the violent episode that led to scuffles, injuries to policemen as well as the NAB refusing to record the statement of Maryam Nawaz, who had appeared for the purpose.

In the report sent to Chief Minister Usman Buzdar, a senior official said, the CCPO has stated that a group of senior PML-N leaders had started gathering at Jati Umra at 8am as per plan, while another had already occupied the road outside the NAB office.

At 10:45am, a procession led by Senator Pervaiz Rasheed, Najam Hashmi, Akhtar Hussain, Talal Chaudhry and Kausar Bibi comprising around 45 vehicles and 15 motorcycles departed for the NAB office and reached there at 11:50am. Prominent PML-N leaders, including Rana Sanaullah, Javed Latif, Hina Pervziz Butt, Ali Pervaiz Malik, Tahir Khalil Sindhu, Ghazali Saleem Butt, Khwaja Imran Nazir, Bilal Yasin and retired Col Mubashar Javed, along with at least 1,500 workers were already present there and had blocked the road.

In order to avoid any mishap, a heavy police contingent had been deployed, including a senior superintendent of police, a superintendent of police, five deputy superintendents of police, 10 station house officers and 471 policemen, the report stated.

Around 12:10pm, PML-N workers tried to force their way into the NAB premises. When police resisted the move, in a planned manner the workers started pelting the law enforcers with stones that they had kept in their vehicles, the report claimed. In response, a few shells of tear gas were fired by police to disperse the protesters.

“Subsequently, in the backdrop of such a violent act of hooliganism, the NAB refused to take statement of Maryam Nawaz,” the official source said while quoting the CCPO’s report.

It further said that during this incident, around 58 people were taken into custody and 15 constables injured.

On the other hand, the police community believes the CCPO’s presence to lead the operation was imperative to avoid any mishap. A senior officer, who has served on important positions in Punjab, said that a lack of field experience had been associated with CCPO Hameed who otherwise was a good officer for non-field assignments.

He said this was the second major incident where the CCPO was found absent from the spot and it was left to the SHOs and young policemen, who managed unprofessionally. Earlier, the Punjab Police had earned strong criticism and embarrassment when the CCPO was found spending most of his time at his office during the lawyers’ attack on Punjab Institute of Cardiology last year.

“Any minor injury to the former PM’s daughter in the Aug 11 incident could have drawn country-wide violent agitation from the PML-N,” he said, adding that policemen pelting stones in uniform had also brought embarrassment to the department. Under a strategy and previous practice, policemen in plainclothes and with their faces covered were used in such incidents to avoid criticism, he revealed.

Another police officer said the CCPO’s report was a confession that police did nothing to crack down before the event. Pre-event arrests of party activists usually helped in weakening the strength of the agitators, he maintained. He added that the report’s statement about the presence of a charged group of workers led by PML-N’s prominent leaders outside the NAB office was a failure of the police high command.

The officer also criticised the role of the security branch for not reporting on time the activities of the PML-N workers, leaders and their processions. Nothing was learnt from the PIC incident to avoid criticism, he lamented.

FIR against PML-N workers: Court orders Chung SHO to record cross version

LAHORE: A sessions court on Wednesday ordered the Chung police station house officer to record version of PML-N in a first information report already registered against its leaders and workers on the charge of attacking a police team outside the office of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) when Maryam Nawaz, the party’s vice president, came to appear in an inquiry about land allotment.

Ms Nawaz’s husband retired Capt Muhammad Safdar had filed a petition, on behalf of the party, under sections 22-A & 22-B of CrPC after the Chung police, what he claimed, refused to entertain his application for the registration of FIR.

Mr Safdar had sought an FIR against Prime Minister Imran Khan, his special assistant on accountability Mirza Shahzad Akbar, NAB Chairman retired Javed Iqbal, NAB Punjab DG Saleem Shahzad and 100 unidentified persons on charge of attempting to kill Maryam Nawaz outside the Thokar Niaz Beg office of the NAB.

On the other hand, the police on a complaint of the NAB had lodged an FIR against Ms Nawaz, Safdar, MNAs Rana Sanaullah Khan, Javed Latif and several other leaders besides over 300 workers.

During a lengthy proceeding on Wednesday, Advocate Farhad Ali Shah argued on behalf of Safdar that a planned attempt was made to kill Ms Nawaz during her appearance at the NAB. He said the police and the NAB officials at the behest of the respondents launched an attack on the vehicle of Ms Nawaz and the party workers.

He said the windscreen of Ms Nawaz’s bulletproof vehicle was damaged with the stones pelted by the police personnel and the workers were seriously injured. He alleged that the attack was a planned conspiracy hatched by the prime minister and other respondents.

He asked the court to order the police to act in accordance with the law and register an FIR against the respondents on the application by the petitioner.

Opposing the petition, the investigation officer (IO) stated that the petitioner was a nominated suspect in the FIR of the incident and fugitive of law. The IO said he filed the petition to counter the FIR. He said the allegations in the petition were baseless and liable to be dismissed.

In his verdict, Additional District & Sessions Judge Ijaz Ahmad Gondal observes that it is a settled law that when a matter is reported and FIR is registered that becomes a case and any other version can come in the case through statement under section 161 of CrPC and the IO may investigate any number of versions pertaining to particular occurrence.

Relying upon a Supreme Court’s 2018 judgment famously known as “Salma Bibi case”, the judge rules that the petitioner’s request for an independent FIR cannot be acceded as the matter has already been reported through the FIR registered on Aug 11 and the investigation is under way.

The judge further observes, “The police has not endorsed the petitioner’s version, however, it is the petitioner’s right that his version be recorded in the FIR already registered pertaining to the occurrence of same date and time and then proceed in accordance with law.”

With these directions, the judge disposed of the petition.

It merits mentioning that Ms Nawaz and other leaders of the PML-N nominated in the FIR have not secured pre-arrest bail. MNA Malik Saiful Malook Khokhar and four others have so far obtained bail.

Some rumours about emergence of original owner for 4000 Canals land including Sharif's Raiwind Palace who claims Sharif's have taken his land illegally.

The chances are that it will be true but that doesn't matter. They have strategically appointed every badniyaat crook in Punjab into the Judiciary, bureaucracy and the Police. Its a mafia enterprise and unless someone takes a gun to them, they will be around for a lot longer.

Lahore police on Friday added Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997 in the FIR against PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz, her husband retired captain Muhammad Safdar and party workers in a case relating to a clash outside the National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) Lahore office.

Safdar appeared before an anti-terrorism court today and obtained interim bail till September 11. The court also sought a record of the cases against the PML-N leader from the police.

In his bail application, Safdar said police had registered a "false and baseless" case against him, adding that his nomination in the case was politically motivated.

Sessions court rejects bail application
Earlier today, a Lahore sessions court rejected Safdar's bail application in the same case.

During the hearing, Chung police submitted a report to the court which stated that officials had added Section 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) 1997 to the FIR against Maryam, Safdar and party workers.

The public prosecutor argued that after inclusion of terror charges, only an anti-terrorism court could hear the case. Meanwhile, Safdar's lawyer argued that including terrorism charges in a politically motivated case was "alarming" and urged the court to remove the clauses and accept his client's bail application.

In a written order, the court observed that the petitioner claimed the case was "malafide" as the investigating officer had added terror clauses without collecting evidence.

The court also noted that the public prosecutor had submitted that after the insertion of Section 7, the court had no jurisdiction to grant bail.

"It is also argued that CCTV footage and other material collected by the IO suggest the accused, after due deliberation, attacked the NAB office.

"After addition of the offence, which are triable exclusively by special court constituted under the Anti-Terrorism Act, this court cannot confirm the pre-arrest bail granted to the petitioner," the court order said.

In August, violence erupted outside NAB's Lahore office as heavy police contingents and PML-N workers confronted each other shortly after Maryam's arrival in a land acquisition investigation.

Many people, including some officials, were injured and around 50 men were rounded up after police fired tear gas besides hurling stones back at the activists, with each side blaming the other for triggering the clash.

Later, police had booked 300 PML-N workers, including Maryam and 187 other nominated people, for attacking law enforcers and NAB personnel and damaging the anti-graft watchdog’s building.

The FIR was registered under section 147 (punishment for rioting), section 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object), section 290 (punishment for public nuisance in cases not otherwise provided for), section 291 (continuance of nuisance after injunction to discontinue), section 440 (mischief committed after preparation made for causing death or hurt), section 109 (punishment of abetment), section 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and section 86 (offence requiring a particular intent or knowledge committed by one who is intoxicated) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

PML-N MPA gets pre-arrest bail

LAHORE: An anti-terrorism court on Saturday granted interim pre-arrest bail to PML-N MPA Mirza Javed in a case of attacking police when PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz came to the office of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in an inquiry about land allotment.

The court summoned record of the case on September 11. The court on Friday had also granted pre-arrest bail to Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar, son-in-law of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the same case.

Initially the police had registered an FIR under the offences of Pakistan Penal Code while it later added section 7 of Anti-Terrorism Act 1997. Several PML-N leaders including Maryam Nawaz, her husband Safdar, MNAs Rana Sanaullah Khan, Javed Latif, and over 300 workers were booked in the same case.

They have decoupled the provincial government with the police and given free hand to Punjab IG Shoaib Dastagir. He is good, learned and internationally acknowledged man. There has been some improvement in Punjab Police, for starters they have massively improved their online presence. Any issue a citizen posts on twitter they respond to with facts of the matter (like FIR registered, investigation ongoing etc). Punjab police has also improved their performance in catching criminals big or small. When they catch someone wanted they post the pictures and details on the criminal along with FIR on twitter. Usually timeline between crime and criminal getting arrested is in the range of 7-10 days.

But and it's a big but, Punjab police is still a total failure when it comes to catching people with political connections. Just the other day there was a viral social media post of how a PML-N MPA who was arrested for stoning on NAB office was chilling in the SHO's office rather than in jail. Police did suspend that SHO but seems like just cosmetic measures to save face. I think alot of the lower cadre of Punjab police are directly connected to PML-N and they are nooni gundas inducted during the decades long PML-N rule. Therefore it is almost impossible to expect them to be neutral and competent. The thana culture is still there and seems no headway is made in that regard as well.

Its this and the NAB that create public perception along with their own experiences. The problem is that corruption is in the DNA of the Punjab police and unless a root and branch reform is done, nothing will change.

Thats what they should do as its nothing more than a mafia in uniform but that would require a brave, intelligent CM willing to take risks. The Punjab Police cannot be reformed, its culture of corruption and serving the Nooras is too deeply embedded for it to be reformed.

The only true establishment of the country getting desperate again

That's what I'm saying since day 1 of Khan taking office - he has to reform health, education, police, judiciary on emergency basis. If he does't fix these basic issues, he will be a failure. It's a lot to ask from him too since he has surrounded himself with lotas.

When you transform a region (like PMLN did with Lahore and central Punjab) than you are bound to get people's loyalty :sharif

Majority of the people I know in Lahore who actually went, stood for hours and voted for PTI changed their opinions on PTI within a years time and are begging for a PMLN return :inti (buzdar affect lol)

So I know you'll throw hissy fit tantrum (expected lol :yuvi) but the fact of the matter is PTI won't get more than 2-3 seats from the region in the next election and forget winning Punjabs majority, they won't be in the picture for federal government and in a decade or two they'll be like ANP or MQM

South Punjab is the only region from Punjab that'll bring PTI again

NAB to also probe Maryam in Safdar’s assets beyond means case

https://tribune.com.pk/story/2288128/nab-to-also-probe-maryam-in-safdars-assets-beyond-means-case

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has decided to include Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz in the assets beyond means probe against Captain (retd) Safdar, it emerged on Monday.

The Lahore division of the top anti-graft watchdog made the decision after it "found important leads in the case".

According to the authority, Maryam has been found to be the owner of the benami properties bought by Safdar, her husband.

Maryam, also the daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, has properties of hundreds of acres in her name in Raiwind and other areas of Punjab.

NAB's documents suggest that details have also been sought regarding Safdar's sources of earning.

Sources in the bureau said that its Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa division received reports about him in 2020, saying the cases were moved to Lahore as majority of his properties were found to be in the provincial capital.

Captain (retd) Safdar has been facing the probe for around two years over the possession of assets that are allegedly disproportionate to his known sources income, a crime under the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999.

The executive board of the anti-graft watchdog had given the nod for the probe in 2018 after a complaint was sent to it by a citizen.

According to the complainant, Safdar owned 300 kanals of land, a 30 kanals plot, a one kanal house, a flour mills and other properties in Mansehra.

https://www.dawn.com/news/1612300/lhc-accepts-for-hearing-nab-petition-to-cancel-maryams-bail-in-money-laundering-case

The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Saturday accepted for hearing a petition by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) for the cancellation of PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz's bail in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills (CSM) case.

A two-judge bench headed by Justice Sardar Muhammad Sarfraz Dogar will hear the petition moved by the watchdog on March 15.

According to the petition, Maryam had been released on bail over money laundering charges in the CSM case.

It quoted NAB Chairman Justice (r) Javed Iqbal as saying that since her bail, Maryam had been "continuously attacking state institutions" and making statements against them on media and social media.

"Maryam Nawaz is also engaged in anti-state propaganda," the NAB chairman said in the petition.

It claimed that Maryam was deliberately making statements to tarnish the image of state institutions and give the impression that they had become inactive.

The petition added that Maryam had not responded to NAB notices sent on January 10, 2020, to provide documents in the CSM case.

Furthermore, she "used her political power and attacked the NAB office" when she was summoned in person on August 11, 2020, for not providing her documents, according to the petition.

"Maryam Nawaz's workers pelted stones at the police and NAB office for which a case has been registered separately," it said. The NAB chairman maintained that Maryam was obstructing the NAB investigation by not appearing when summoned.

"Maryam Nawaz's bail in the CSM money laundering case should be cancelled," the petition prayed.

Maryam was arrested by NAB in the CSM case in August 2019. The accountability watchdog suspects her of involvement in money laundering through investments of variable heavy amounts as one of the main shareholders of the mills.

It alleged that she was involved in money laundering with the help of some foreigners during the period of 1992-93, when PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif was the prime minister.

She was later released on bail in November 2019 by a two-member LHC bench, comprising Justice Ali Baqar Najafi and Justice Sardar Ahmad Naeem. She was ordered to furnish two surety bonds, each worth Rs10 million, deposit an additional Rs70m and surrender her passport to secure her release.

Meanwhile, PML-N leaders Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Marriyum Aurangzeb said the move was an attempt by the anti-graft watchdog to "muzzle" Maryam.

"The law is present, the government can initiate proceedings against her. If any other institution is aggrieved [...] then they can do so as well," said Abbasi. He also said that it was the right of a citizen to talk on matters of national concern.

He asked whether the NAB chairman had "ever read the law", adding that it was up for debate whether the petition was sent at the chairman's behest. "Don't do this drama in the country [...] NAB is doing politics in the country."

He said that neither the government nor any institution had raised any concerns regarding Maryam while the NAB chairman was the only one seemingly aggrieved. Abbasi alleged that the petition amounted to nothing more than an effort to curry favour with the government and institutions.

"The reality of the anti-graft watchdog has been made clear in front of the people of the country. This is not an institution for accountability".

Abbasi stated that he expected the court to not only dispose of the "frivolous petition" but also issue a fine to NAB for "wasting the court's time and harassing a citizen of this country".

"Institutions of accountability are not above accountability. The sooner the NAB chairman and the bureau understand this [the better it will be]".

https://tribune.com.pk/story/2290106/nab-summons-maryam-in-another-case-on-march-26

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) summoned on Thursday Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz in the Raiwind land transfer case.

The PML-N leader has also been summoned by the anti-graft authority in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case on the same date.

Today's NAB notice directed Maryam to bring all the required documentation at the time of her appearance.

The anti-graft body has alleged that at least 1,440 kanals of land -- 180 acres – was transferred in Maryam’s name. This happened after 2013 when 3,568 kanals of land -- 446 acres -- was transferred in the name of the Sharif family.

NAB has alleged that 3,568 kanals land was purchased by the Sharif family in 2013. Out of this, the largest share -- 1,936 kanals or 242 acres -- was transferred in the name of Shamim Bibi, the mother of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif. The property transferred against Maryam’s name was from this share of the property.

In August 2020, NAB’s Lahore bureau expanded its scope of investigation against the Sharif family in the case.

The master plan of the city was introduced in 2004. However it was amended in 2013 through a notification by the Lahore district council, and the residential areas of Raiwind tehsil were transferred and categorised as agricultural land. Sources said the amendments were introduced to benefit the Sharif family.

The PML-N leader has been summoned by NAB on March 26 for the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case as well.

On August 8, 2019, Maryam was arrested and taken into custody by NAB in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case. She was granted bail on November 4, the same year.

NAB claimed that she aided and abetted co-accused persons – Nawaz and others – in acquiring and laundering funds, which, it alleged, were disproportionate to the known sources of income of the former PM. It accused Maryam of being a beneficiary of the assets.

On March 13, the Lahore High Court (LHC) accepted a petition for hearing by the NAB seeking cancellation of Maryam's bail in the the sugar mills case against two surety bonds of Rs10 million each.

The court also ordered her to deposit an amount of Rs70 million with the LHC deputy registrar (judicial) – to establish her bona fide – while also surrendering her passport.

Tension between the accountability bureau and the PML-N vice president reached a new high when NAB sought the bail cancellation.

NAB stated that Maryam had been making remarks against “national institutions” which were based on “treason”. According to the authority, the comments were aimed at creating hurdles and influencing the investigation of cases pertaining to corruption and money laundering.

https://www.dawn.com/news/1613980/sanaullah-asks-nab-to-have-courage-and-not-bar-pml-n-supporters-during-maryams-appearance

PML-N leader Rana Sanaullah on Monday asked the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) not to "put obstacles" in the way of PML-N workers who plan to accompany the party's vice president Maryam Nawaz during her appearance before the watchdog on March 26.

Speaking to reporters in Lahore, Sanaullah said the NAB should have the courage to allow PML-N supporters to join Maryam upon her arrival, assuring that they would remain peaceful.

"Our workers should not be stopped. When they (NAB) have summoned PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz then they should show courage [and] allow people to gather there to express solidarity with her and not put any obstacles in the way," he said.

Last Wednesday, NAB had summoned Maryam to appear before it on March 26 in a money laundering investigation in connection with the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case after a gap of seven months.

Before this, the accountability watchdog had not summoned Maryam since August last when violence erupted outside its Lahore headquarters on her arrival to record her statement in an investigation against her.

Maryam is facing two inquiries — money laundering and illegal land acquisition in Raiwind. Both investigations have been pending against her for quite some time.

Sanaullah, in his remarks, said the notice issued to Maryam was "illegal" and "unconstitutional" and should be withdrawn.

In response to a question, he said the PML-N reserved its right to protest if Maryam was arrested in the "illegal" inquiry.

Sanaullah claimed that during Maryam's last appearance before the NAB, the bureau's office had been sealed up to a kilometre from all four sides, and asked NAB not to repeat the same and allow supporters to reach the office.

"I take responsibility that none of our workers will resort to any sort of violence," the PML-N leader said. "We will gather there to express solidarity with our leader in a peaceful manner."

He said that during Maryam's last appearance, police had baton-charged PML-N workers when Maryam's car was crossing the barriers erected by the authorities. This led to the situation turning violent and stone-pelting was started by both sides, he claimed.

Sanaullah further claimed that no one had any confidence in the NAB, which he accused of only following the diktats of Adviser to the Prime Minister on Interior and Accountability Mirza Shahzad Akbar.

On Sunday, Pakistan Democratic Movement president Maulana Fazlur Rehman had said that "hundreds of thousands" of party workers would accompany Maryam during her appearance before the accountability watchdog.

Maryam, meanwhile, said she would appear before NAB officials on March 26 but warned that the PML-N would fully resist if the agency tried to do anything "wrong" there.

“The time for offering sacrifices is over … Now it’s time to seek accountability,” she told a PML-N youth convention, adding that it was a thing of the past when the NAB could pick anyone from anywhere.

Reacting to her statements, the ruling PTI on Monday tweeted that "Maryam wants to escape accountability by threatening an attack on NAB, which is extremely shameful."

"Not surprising as she is the daughter of Nawaz Sharif who ordered the attack on Supreme Court. Just like all other attempts, this NRO plea will fail too," it wrote.

Federal Planning Minister Asad Umar while referring to the PML-N leadership said: "Those whose threats can't even scare a mosquito are threatening the state and institutions daily. You are unable to gather supporters and are threatening an attack on NAB.

"[You] will not get an NRO no matter how much you cry."

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad, Information Minister Senator Shibli Faraz blasted the opposition for supporting Maryam in what he called her "unlawful and immoral" actions.

He said her alleged behaviour of threatening NAB and using her political platform for her personal interests was "dangerous", adding, however, that her "threats" from yesterday seemed to be pointed towards PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari.

Faraz said Maryam, instead of answering questions about her alleged corruption, was trying all the tactics to escape the law and force authorities to decide the cases against her under pressure or fear.

"We fully condemn the threat she's given for March 26," Faraz said, adding that the PML-N had a history of such behaviour, citing the attack on the Supreme Court and the violence during Maryam's previous appearance at NAB.

"We want to tell [the PML-N] that neither the government will come under pressure through such behaviour nor will our leader, Prime Minister Imran Khan, whose reason for being famous is that he doesn't come under pressure or fear of anyone," the minister added.

In response to the PML-N's plans to gather workers in large numbers during Maryam's appearance, NAB has decided to request the assistance of the Rangers and police in order to "make the security of NAB Lahore's building foolproof", the bureau said in a statement issued on Monday.

"A request is being made to the relevant officials to declare NAB Lahore a Red Zone in view of the reported security threats," the press release added.

It said the measures were being taken on the basis of media reports regarding alleged plans of "some NAB accused, workers of political parties and other persons to raid the NAB Lahore building, pelt stones, create obstacles in the performance of NAB's official duties, and to damage the NAB Lahore building".

"On this occasion, NAB has clarified that it will always continue to play its role ... for the elimination of corruption from the country and to recover the public's billions of rupees of looted money from the corrupt elements without paying heed to any threat or pressure," read the statement.

https://www.dawn.com/news/1614045/nab-to-call-in-rangers-police-on-maryams-appearance

The PML-N leadership has directed all its members in the national and provincial assemblies from Punjab to accompany party’s vice president Maryam Nawaz to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) office at Thokar Niaz Beg here on Friday where she has to appear in the probes into money laundering and illegal acquisition of land allegations.

Following the PML-N’s decision to gather maximum party leaders and workers outside the NAB provincial headquarters on March 26, the bureau also decided to seek “foolproof security” from Rangers and police.

Meanwhile, on Monday, Ms Nawaz remained undecided about seeking a pre-arrest bail in the illegal acquisition of land case.

“Maryam is in two minds whether seeking bail will be beneficial politically since the relief of pre-arrest bail does not last beyond a few months in NAB cases,” a PML-N leader told Dawn.

The NAB Lahore is probing Ms Nawaz as part of a money laundering investigation in connection with the Chaudhry Sugar Mills and 148 kanals of land that she allegedly purchased in Lahore illegally. In the money laundering investigation, she has been on bail since November 2019.The anti-graft body had also moved the Lahore High Court seeking cancellation of her bail. The court has issued her a notice for April 7.

Not only have PML-N MNAs and MPAs been directed to reach the NAB office, but the party’s Lahore chapter office-bearers and provincial party ticket holders have also been tasked with gathering as many workers to put up a strong political show.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman had also announced that the workers of his party, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl, would also accompany Ms Nawaz.

“All PML-N lawmakers in the national and Punjab assemblies will accompany Maryam Nawaz on her appearance before the NAB Lahore on March 26,” PML-N Punjab President Rana Sanaullah confirmed in reply to a question.

When asked if Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz would also be with her, Mr Sanaullah tactfully avoided giving a clear answer. “Today, Hamza Shehbaz and (PML-N secretary general) Ahsan Iqbal attended a meeting on [the matter] and everyone will go to the NAB office along with Maryam,” he said while talking to reporters at the party office in Model Town here on Monday.

Recently, reports of a conflict between the two cousins – Maryam and Hamza – surfaced over each other’s style of politics, which were rejected by the former.

Mr Sanaullah claimed that thousands of party workers would be present outside the NAB office to express solidarity with Maryam. He warned against creating hurdles in their way as they would remain peaceful.Critical of the bureau’s role in targeting the opposition leaders, Sanaullah said: “NAB’s call-up notice to Maryam is illegal and unconstitutional. It has been issued on the directions of (adviser to PM) Shahzad Akbar.”

The PML-N leader demanded withdrawal of the notice forthwith. He also challenged the bureau to arrest Ms Nawaz and warned of consequences. He reminded the NAB chairman of the fate of former chief justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar after his retirement. “The NAB chairman (retired justice Javed Iqbal) should not take illegal steps on the pressure of the PTI government or Shahzad Akbar. Akbar seems to possess two to three videos of the NAB chairman that is why he is being blackmailed. The chairman, who is retiring this year, must remember that he has to live in this society. Look at Baba Rahmatay who cannot face the public [fearing] the people’s wrath,” Sanaullah remarked.

When asked if PPP workers would also be invited to accompany Ms Nawaz, PML-N Punjab Information Secretary Azma Bokhari told Dawn that Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) President Maulana Fazl might invite the PPP leadership. About Hamza’s plan to lead the lawmakers, she said: “He is expected to lead, but I cannot confirm.”

The NAB had summoned Ms Nawaz in August last year, but clashes between PML-N workers and police broke out outside its Lahore headquarters upon her arrival to record a statement in an investigation against her.

The NAB said in a statement on Monday that according to “some media reports” its building might “come under attack” from political workers and others on the occasion of Maryam’s appearance before the bureau on Friday.

“To ensure foolproof security, NAB has decided to seek help from law enforcement agencies – police and Rangers. The bureau has also decided to get NAB headquarters declared a red zone and an application is being submitted to the authorities concerned,” it stated.

Rumour has it that many people in the PML N are sick and tired of this obnoxious, immature woman leading their party and even Nawaz Sharif has reprimanded her for her of political intellect, insight, intuition and that she is too jazbati, emotional and that she should actually learn from Hamza Shahbaz. NS also didn't like the fact that she was blindly getting too close to the PPP

Why is Maryam out of jail? She is a convicted criminal. It boils my blood to see people hailing her as the next young, bold and charismatic leader. She is a woman of a very low-intellect.

Lol and this low level of intellect is catching up to her. Even her father has lost confidence in her and has blamed her for PML N dismal showing in the recent jalsas in Punjab and has even commented to her face that Hamza Shahbaz has more patience, political intellect, intuition, understanding than her as she was just dumbly following the PPP without any long term larger sense understanding of the impact it would have on the party she is clamouring to lead.

https://tribune.com.pk/story/2291181/maryam-granted-pre-arrest-bail-ahead-of-nab-march-26-hearing

A division bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) granted pre-arrest bail till April 12 to Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday, against a National Accountability Bureau (NAB)’s call-up notice summoning her on March 26 in response to the Jati Umra (approximately 1,500 kanal) land case.

The division bench of headed by Justice Sarfraz Dogar.

The PML-N’s was lauded as having played a clever move by appearing before LHC Chief Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan, and requesting the court to fix their bail plea for today.

Maryam’s counsel, recently elected PML-N Senator Azam Nazir Tarar, implored that they believe NAB could arrest her, arguing that the anti-graft watchdog’s impression has not been good judging from past experiences.

He said it summons the person in a separate case but makes an arrest in another case. At this, CJ Qasim Khan ordered the concerned deputy registrar to fix the case today in the relevant court. He further ordered the DSP security to take Maryam to the concerned court room under tight security.

At the hearing, the counsel further argued that issuing a call-up notice for personal appearance “in a matter where submission of record may serve the purpose tends to show that the same has been issued for reasons other than bonafide. Although, the superior courts have time and again given guidelines re-summoning of a person but the same have not been complied with and the respondent bureau is persisting with an imperious and pernicious “thana mentality” of summoning in person without any plausible reason”.

He argued that the proceedings against the petitioner by the respondent bureau were prompted by malafide intention, ulterior motive and considerations extraneous to law. “Indeed, registration of series of cases and repeated arrests of the petitioner on behest of the Government are classic examples of misuse of process of respondent bureau to muffle the voice of the petitioner as Leader of the Opposition party,” he further added.

Maryam has maintained in her petition that, “The assumption of jurisdiction, issuance of call up notices and proceedings in pursuance thereof are prompted by malafide intention at the behest of the present regime for political vendetta and considerations extraneous to law. The call up notice is general and vague and the same does not specify the fact, point, nature of allegation and its nexus with the petitioner who admittedly has never remained holder of any public office.”

She prayed to the court to grant her pre-arrest bail in inquiry No. 1(9)HQ/2182/IW-II/NAB-L mentioned in call-up notice issued by NAB.

“Meanwhile, the petitioner be kindly admitted to ad-interim bail before arrest till the final decision of the instant petition in the interest of justice,” her petition further states. Speaking to the media outside the court’s premises, Maryam said the cases filed against her were politically motivated.

She maintained that NAB was doing nothing except engaging in revenge politics against her “on the orders of [PM] Imran Khan, now that his government is in trouble.”

“NAB will not be given a chance to save Imran Khan’s sinking ship,” the PML-N leader asserted, adding that she had decided to fight “premier’s revenge politics”, and will not be an ‘easy prey’ this time.

She alleged that if the incumbent government was not in trouble then NAB would not have needed to summon her. Addressing concerns regarding the difference between her party and the PPP, she maintained that both the parties had their own strategies, although there are some common goals that have united them under the umbrella of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM).

The PML-N vice president further said that she maintains a good relationship with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

She upheld that the opposition alliance will decide its own course of action without any outside interference.

Maryam also spoke about the Punjab government’s decision to declare NAB's Lahore office premises a 'Red Zone', calling it a cowardly act.

She said that the move shows the government was trembling in fear of an ‘unarmed’ woman.

She further claimed that she was summoned to the NAB office and attacked, adding that her car was targeted by a laser gun which was recorded on video. A day ago, the Punjab government declared the premises of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB)'s Lahore office as 'Red Zone' for March 26.

Maryam, the daughter of former prime minister and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif, is to appear before the authority in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills and Raiwind land transfer cases.

Giving the bureau's request a nod, the federal interior ministry approved the deployment of Rangers and police at the office's premises for the day.

As per reports, contrary to speculations rife in the provincial capital, the authorities may not arrest the PML-N leader on the occasion. Instead, Maryam will only be presented with a questionnaire pertaining to the Chaudhry Sugar Mills case.

Afterwards, she will be questioned regarding the family's property in the Raiwind land transfer case.

https://tribune.com.pk/story/2291437/nab-puts-off-maryams-hearing-amid-uptick-in-covid-cases

he National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has postponed the PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz hearing at its Lahore office scheduled to be held on March 26 (tomorrow).

In a statement on Thursday, anti-corruption watchdog has said that the decision has been taken in view of NCOC guidelines against coronavirus and in wider public interest.

The announcement comes after the Lahore High Court (LHC) earlier in the day disposed off a NAB petition to direct PML-N's Maryam to appear at the bureau's Lahore office without party workers and with a maximum of two persons.

The authority had said two persons may act as her support staff, out of which one may be an accountant to assist her.

The accountability watchdog failed to satisfy the court over “how a court could intervene in a purely political activity and pass an order for restraining a political party from its political activity”.

The LHC is a disgrace. Contrast these crooks worshipping of the mafia Sharifs with their treatment of the Model Massacre and you see why this criminal syndicate needs to be arrested.
