Indian police arrested three people in Kanpur suspected of illegal betting on cricket matches, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said on Thursday, a day after the city hosted its first Indian Premier League (IPL) game of the season.

“The Anti Corruption Unit of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been tracking activities of certain individuals, as a result of which, three suspects were arrested,” BCCI said in a statement.

“Following this operation, the Uttar Pradesh Police Crime Branch could successfully foil the alleged betting attempts of the accused. Kanpur’s Green Park Stadium on Wednesday hosted the Delhi Daredevils who defeated Gujarat Lions by two wickets.

The same venue is also scheduled to host the final game of the season between defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Lions on May 13.

Betting controversies have blighted the lucrative Twenty20 league in recent years with former Indian paceman Shanthakumaran Sreesanth handed a life ban by the BCCI for involvement in a spot-fixing scandal in the 2013 season.

The Chennai and Rajasthan franchises were also subsequently suspended from the IPL for two years after key officials from both teams were found guilty of illegal betting.

Kanpur: The Indian Premier League has come under the shadows of foul play after three people were arrested in Kanpur on Thursday in connection with betting. The Kanpur police is also hinting at the possible involvement of two Gujarat Lions players.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India through a press release had informed on Thursday that the Anti Corruption Unit of the BCCI had been tracking activities of these men before they were arrested.

The operation by the ACU helped the Uttar Pradesh Police Crime Branch to successfully foil the alleged betting attempts of the accused.

The arrests were made from the same hotel where IPL teams Gujrat lions and Delhi Daredevils were staying. The police recovered cash of Rs 41 lakh.

The people arrested were identified as Ramesh Nayan Shah, a businessman from Thane, and local residents Ramesh Kumar and Vikas Kumar. Ramesh Kumar had a contract to put hoardings at the Green Park stadium and had booked the room for Shah, who was in touch with a bookie from Ajmer named Bunty.

Raids are currently on in Ajmer to arrest him.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Kanpur, has said that role of two Gujarat Lions players is under scanner. Possibility of Shah being in touch with these two players has not been ruled out, but has not been confirmed yet.

Earlier on Thursday, the Delhi Police busted a similar racket where six people were arrested in Shahdara area in East Delhi. Speaking to CNN-News18 an official confirmed the arrest and seizure of laptops, mobile phones and LCDs among other things.

in before Indians come and twist this incident in to a non-issue. Betting is ripe in India and it is undoubtedly the capital of the world when it comes to match fixing/bookies related to cricket.

Looks pretty serious this.

Life ban should be imposed on anyone found guilty. So second chances, neither the opportunity to play domestic or league cricket or any other professional form of cricket either.

I don't think any Indian will deny betting in IPL doesn't happen if someone does deny it he is probably a fool or not living in India.. Fixing may or may not happen by players but if a player is caught the stance of BCCI atleast is to life ban him so we would not see Sreesanth or the other guys caught fixing back in Indian team.. Players like kohli, raina, Dhoni etc don't need to fix because they earn millions and I hope they are not stupid to throw away millions for just some cheap bucks..

Life ban should be handed to anyone involved in betting be it our own player. Ashraful should consider himself lucky then again he reported to the authorities about his misdeeds

It's sad that cricket has such a high prevalence of this. Football and cricket are so rampant with it, it's hard to truly take them seriously.

Of course one could argue that no sport is true of this, but in North American sports, I don't see how a final in the NHL for example of Nashville and Anaheim say, is beneficial for the league and teams like Toronto and New York have not won in (especially Toronto, the mecca of the sport) many years.

It's sad that we cannot simply enjoy the sport without any thought process of red flags. Especially as a Pakistani fan in the last ten years, it has been a horror show.
