Currently a hot-topic and one that will be discussed a lot in the coming few days. Excellent post which expresses a good alternate pov to the usual 'its about money, stupid' style of thinking.

It is not about giving away charity and being a nice human being. It's about doing the bare minimum to promote the sport which is letting them earn money.

You can look at the problem entirely from a money making aspect. All you have to do is look at the team squads and you can see how much thought they have given into selecting the right players who will make them big money. Not very much. If I were a franchise owner I'd be looking to get the most quality for my bucks. Each player and especially those from the big categories will be scrutinized heavily.

While in reality the majority of the franchises are just throwing away money on "big" players or recognized players without putting in any thought. In my team players like Asad Shafiq and Anwar Ali would not be selected. If I were a franchise owner Moin Khan would get booted out for selecting his son.

For the most part money rules the world and there is no doubt about it. But if the league is going to use the name of Pakistan and the teams are going to use the name of different regions then as a Pakistani I demand that the least they can do is invest a little in promoting the sport in such regions. They are burning away enough money anyway by giving away useless coaching jobs such as spin bowling job for Saeed Ajmal. Otherwise the league is just taking advantage of the name "Pakistan" and the franchises are just taking advantage of the regional name.

There is so much money to be made by picking a local guy, promoting him and thus promoting your brand. So much money to be made by selling the brand's merchandise among the fans. You can only fool people for a certain amount of time. Perhaps the Quetta brand is popular among locals at the moment due to its past performances and perhaps the people are still buying the brand's merchandise. But if there is no real connection between the team and the city it's not going to take long for the people to get over the initial hype. PSL is only held once a year while if you were really business minded you could be making money all year round.

Of course the "local talent" category would have some constraints attached to it. Like the player has to be under a certain age limit, shouldn't have made international debut yet and only been in the domestics circuit since few years.

The teams have to pick 19 players and I am sure a local talent can find a place in there somewhere. Let's be specific the local guy Bismillah Khan wasn't too bad to be dropped. In the current QG squad there are a lot of "guests" who he could've easily replaced. The promotion of local talent is only going to lead to more promising youngsters coming through.

At the end of the day the combination of 11 players makes you win the the game and as I said before the "local guy" doesn't necessarily be have to part of the playing XI. There could be trade of where if you pick a local talent you only have to pick one emerging player instead of two. But there has to be some kind of a connection between the team and the region.

Ideally the franchises should be smart enough to pick a local guy themselves, since they aren't I do support the idea of making it a requirement. Otherwise if you are only looking for making money why would you support the idea of emerging player category or a limitation on the amount of foreign players you can field?
