This is a good question, I've found myself in situations where I've wanted to throw in the towel and quit on my stool; those times when you just don't want to get up the next morning and you get all kinds of thoughts in really testing scenario's where you're under immense pressure. I had zero confidence or self belief but were mostly motivated by my personal issues and that kept me going, at the same time I was constantly plotting a plan b or c or d; create all these scenarios in my mind of what I could in anticipation of failure, while all those situations were extremely unpleasant to visualise, I think at the back of my mind it also kept the light bulb on. Looking back I was like a dog on edge not knowing where the next meal was going to come from.

But that's what worked for me I guess, it is weird because rather then visualise the best possible scenarios and having all that belief etc I was quite the opposite with the visualisations of all the things that could go wrong, constantly on edge and full of fear but I used that fear to motivate me and projected it towards the things which I wanted to achieve.

Whether positive or negative, visualisation can really help in my opinion; but everyone is different, you have to figure out what makes you click and keep on that path. By the sounds of it constantly setting yourself goals can really help you, keep sticky notes or a mini note pad of stuff which you need to get through and set yourself deadlines so you're able to complete the things which you need to, any thing that may help or remind you make full use of that.

On the mental / psychological side, always speak to people close to you or there could be such services at your educational institute they can really help in a major way; often there are so many facilities which are there but we don't use and they can be really helpful, and if you're having any problems on that front make sure not to bottle it all up inside.

Excellent post and well deserved! Tough topic to speak upon.

excellent...sometimes you have to keep your expectations low which works,,its working for me.

Much appreciated everyone didn't expect to win POTW, always try my best to help in these type of situations. Things can be rough for many people in different ways and a lot things can constantly put you down. Wish all you brothers the best

Solid advice, congrats shaz619

Nice one, I also use to listen a great deal to what Mike use to say what Cus'D'Amato said to him when younger regarding the fear aspect. But what I found shocking more recently and didn't know this was that as a very very young kid Tyson was taken to a hypnotist in order develop that aura of invincibility which made him so ferocious. Not saying everyone should get one of those though lol but he's a good example of what both fear and confidence can do for you positively, Cus always put Mike on a big pedestal and Tyson didn't know why until later in life.

I noticed quite a few in our communities have it all stacked against them from the word go, everyone putting them down etc you develop that fear and it can be used in different ways both positive and negative. However, encouragement/confidence/support is capable of incredible wonders to and this is not always easy to find deep within but whatever it is you do find that can be used imo.

Mike's life is fascinating and everyone should read about it. The fear and confidence together is an interesting point as both although being on different sides of the coin can help you in positive ways if you can use them properly. Those who have no fear often dont realise what they have to lose and when they do it's too late. Those who have little confidence know what they need but feel it;s so far away, it's hardly worth the effort as failure seems too much of a fear and confidence is something which may not be in their nature.

Not many people who lack confidence become confidence on their own, most helped towards being more confident by others. Those who can do it on their own I truly admire but its not something you see every day. Then there's having someone in your life but there is a trust issue. Mike had 100% complete trust in Cus so even when he feared not being able to do something he believed because Cus told him he could.

Asian community are often very spiteful in addressing the youth who are trying to make a life for themselves. Instead of encouraging by pointing out any achievement they look at what has not been achieveed so far.

Being away from negative vibes whether it's family member, friend or outsiders is very important imo. Having a competitie nature is also very helpful and was the biggest factor me. Since a small child I hated losing whether it was sport or academics. I remember losing in a race in sports day and it made me misrable for the rest of the day. The next day my team won the daily football match and I was happy for the rest of the day. This gave me the motivation to do well, knowing doing well makes you feel good and the buzz you get with it. I look at achieving as a buzz, something you'd get with drugs, a high and the feeling of having it again and again. I think it has become adictive now which maybe in an issue in later life but for now it works well to have this approach and mindset.

Good post dude, one of the people I look up to since I can identify with his track record uni-wise.

But I don't agree with his stance on Moeen Ali's place as an allrounder. :stokes :kp

Very good point on the support regarding confidence, it is not easy to obtain at times on your own. Cus was just on another level, he was on the edge of death when he came into Mike's life and did everything in his power to fast track him to the top level and teach him so much about life but unfortunately left at a crucial time and it was just too hard for Mike to recover from that, when they let Rooney go as his trainer Mike has said on a interview recently that it wasn't his choice and the great man was forced out by Don King and co because they saw him as a threat, under Cus and Rooney Mike never lost a fight.

I agree with you there regarding how those people ignorantly put people down all the time but it's a mentality which is just there and not all of these guys are like bad bad people but it's just their way of life and tough to eradicate but we can learn from it so our generation is much better when dealing with everything.

Aha you're like a Joe Calzaghe then mate regarding that spirit you reminded me of the time when he lost an amateur fight during the championships I believe and it hurt him so bad he cried his heart out but after that never lost a fight lol good on you though, that can really help and it has driven myself to; I've found myself in a Joe Calzaghe situation to lmao but after that point, I did all in my power to make sure I didn't find myself in that spot, but what hurts is when you lose everyone is on your case really and no one picks you up, but when you win man, you"ll have a friend for every dollar in your pocket like a wise man once said ;) Achievement is defo a buzz and the euphoria can be unreal, especially in sport as well.
