Predict India's squad for the 2018 Asia Cup

With 7 100s in his last 19 list A matches, one player who deserves to be picked in Mayank Agrawal. This f it means resting senior pros Rohit and Dhawan, so be it.

Dont think many senior players are interested to play Asia cup. Lets see if selectors force their hand.

I don't see Kohli resting especially after what happened in CT final.

Kohli will rest for sure. He is having a bad back and he has been playing through that in the England Test series. I don't see him risking a long term injury playing in the heat in Asia cup. He will for sure rest and so will Bumrah. Not sure about the rest.

What happens IF we lose the next two tests and lose the Eng series 1-4? There will be so much public and media backlash that BCCI (or CoA) will do everything possible to deflect the heat from themselves and ask the regular team to play Asia Cup.

We saw how the CoA's mafia style of working when we lost Lord's test. Suddenly there were reports in media (quoting unnnamed sources - meaning unofficial off the record briefings by CoA jokers) of CoA being unhappy with Kohli and Shastri and questioning the training methods of the team. That was nothing but aimed at diverting any likely questions to the CoA and to show CoA was worried and cared for Indian cricket.

This is exactly the reason fans’ wishes for Kohli and Bumrah to be rested will fall on deaf ears. While Kohli should be rested, provided he is playing with a bad back, I’m certain Pakistan’s participation in this tournament won’t allow that. BCCI/CoA will be taken downtown by the public if Indian young ‘uns end up getting thrashed by Pakistan.

I think Pakistan will have upper hand over India and will most probably win Asia cup.

Why would Indian fans be upset if youngsters get opportunities. That is what this team has been missing in CT finals. Anyway, Asia cup is not that important. India should look to build a solid team, so to avoid situations like CT finals in the future. This is the perfect opportunity to introduce youngsters while giving rest to our key players.

Indian fans will be upset if the youngsters lose heavily to Pakistan. I agree this is the perfect opportunity to blood in younger players, but I don’t see it happening. The public sentiment against Pakistan and what happened in the CT final, will deter BCCI/CoA from resting key players. This is not about educated fans like you and me, this is about the general public which won’t take well to losing to Pakistan and the knives will be out for the selectors if they get thrashed in one of the games.

It's unlikely and left-field but I hope the squad is something like this:

1. Rohit Sharma (c)
2. ‎KL Rahul
3. Shreyas Iyer
4. ‎Manish Pandey
5. ‎MS Dhoni (wk)
6. ‎Vijay Shankar
7. Ravindra Jadeja
8. ‎Bhuvaneshwar Kumar
9. ‎Kuldeep Yadav
10. ‎Yuzvendra Chahal
11. ‎Jasprit Bumrah

12. ‎Mayank Agarwal
13. ‎Krunal Pandya
14. ‎Rishab Pant
15. ‎Umesh Yadav
16. ‎Deepak Chahar/M Siraj

That Vijay Shankar is useless better to replace him with either mayank or krunal

The senior players who play both test and odi formats are most likely to be rested for Asia cup after a long england tour. Especially kohli with his back problems. Bumrah most likely to be rested and possibly dhawan and pandya as well. The other odi regulars like rohit ,dhoni, chahal, kuldeep(he may be rested just as so Pakistan do not get a chance to face him before world cup) will play .

So one can possibly see mayank or vihari or pandey return, krunal and siraj or khaleel most likely to be tried out in Asia cup .

If India are resting senior players, it will be better to test some of the talented youngsters.

India must include Gill, Shaw, Pant, Iyer, Krunal, Agarwal.

We should not worry too much about the results. It should be about finding a couple of youngsters who can share the middle order burden.

India must rest Dhawan, Kohli, Hardik, Bumrah, BK, Shami and Rohit. These guys have played a lot of cricket in the past few months.

Quite a few useless selections there,

Vijay needs game time because he is the only other pace bowling all-rounder option apart from Hardik and it is always a good idea to groom a backup for specific roles. He is in because I assume Hardik will be rested. It's a tactical selection keeping the future in mind. I don't think Vijay Shankar is all that great. But he fills a particular role that right now nobody in the A system does.

Iyer has been poor in recent A games but he has actually done quite well. This numbers are actually the best of all the batsmen India have tried at number 4 in the last 2 years.

Pandey has been the highest run scorer of the series/tournament for the last 3 India A tour games. I know he failed to deliver the last time but it's worth giving him another chance, especially when so many seniors might be rested.

I've put Bhuvi in because I think he would require game time after a long injury lay-off, like most bowlers do.

I've kept Dhoni in because it's obvious that he will be playing the WC so might as well have him in the ODI team and have him match ready.

I would also like to see Pant getting some game time so that he is groomed as the backup keeper for the WC.

I picked the squad keeping, what I feel is the best XI, keeping in mind what roles need to be filled.

1. Batsman
2. Batsman
3. Batsman
4. Batsman
5. Wicketkeeper
6. All-Rounder (Fast)
7. All-Rounder (Spin)
8. Fast bowler
9. Fast bowler
10. Spinner
11. Spinner

7 batsmen, 3 pacers & 3 spinners.

That's what I think India's best team balance should look like. That's why I went with that XI.

The Indian squad for the 2018 Asia Cup, to be held in the UAE from September 15-28, will be named on Saturday, September 1 in Mumbai.

The BCCI announced today that the senior selection committee comprising chairman of selectors MSK Prasad, Sarandeep Singh and Devang Gandhi – all former Test cricketers – will meet inside the corridors of the BCCI headquarters at the Wankhede Stadium to select the team.

India and Pakistan are placed in Group A along with a qualifier while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are in Group B. The one qualifier spot is yet to be decided amongst UAE, Singapore, Oman, Nepal, Malaysia and Hong Kong.

The competition is scheduled to start from September 15 with Bangladesh locking horns with Sri Lanka in the opening match. India and Pakistan will face each other on September 19. The last the two teams met was in Champions Trophy final 2017 which Pakistan won

The previous Asia Cup was a Twenty20 format tournament held in Bangladesh in 2016. The Indian team, under MS Dhoni, won the title.

Such a shame to see those three as only selectors. Not even 15 tests between them with very poor career records. Hope to see more experienced group soon.

Virat Kohli's workload, middle-order slots in focus ahead of Asia Cup team selection

India skipper Virat Kohli's workload will be in focus along with the middle-order slots when the national selection committee picks the squad for the Asia Cup cricket tournament in Mumbai on Saturday.

While India will be entering the tournament after a grueling two-and-half-month tour of the United Kingdom, it is unlikely that top stars will take rest as they are set to play arch-rivals Pakistan at least twice or maybe thrice if the two teams reach the finals.

However, the skipper has had issues with his back and with another six Test matches lined in the next three months (two vs West Indies and four vs Australia), the selectors will be cautious while monitoring Kohli's workload.

There is nothing to suggest that Kohli will opt out of the tournament but if he does, then Rohit Sharma will lead the side.

The other concern will be fixing the middle-order woes.

While Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma select themselves, KL Rahul will remain a backup opener or one-down depending on the team situation.

However, it's the two batting slots after Kohli which are a bone of contention going into the World Cup next year.

Manish Pandey had an indifferent run with the senior team but the Quadrangular series saw him roar back to form. He led India B to the title with 306 runs in four games without being dismissed once.

Ambati Rayudu has passed the "Yo-Yo" fitness test and scored a few runs for India A. Kedar Jadhav is also fit and his slow off-breaks could be an asset on the UAE tracks.

The selectors will also find it difficult to ignore Mayank Agarwal's rightful claim to a place in the side after scoring truckloads of runs for Karnataka and India A.

He has been a stupendous success across formats but with Dhawan, Rohit and Rahul as openers, it will be difficult for the selectors to slot Agarwal unless they decide to rest Dhawan.

But there is a chance that if Agarwal is ignored for the Asia Cup, he will play against the West Indies at home where some seniors are certain to be rested.

The bowling department will have Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah leading the attack with Shardul Thakur and Siddarth Kaul fighting for the back-up pacer's slot along with Umesh Yadav.

With Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind stumps, there are chances that young Rishabh Pant, who has looked far more confident than Dinesh Karthik, may make it as Dhoni's understudy.

BCCI will never risk resting top players in asia cup. India is playing Pakistan probably three times so defeat in those games and they will face severe backlash.
