Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on his team's mentality to face Liverpool having suffered a home defeat to them in the FA Cup last month: "We have had the opportunity to refresh and reconnect again when we went to Dubai. We had a long period then between the Forest and Palace games.

"My feeling is that we continue to play really well and need to be much efficient in the final third and that's helpful for the forthcoming matches.

"This season we have beat big teams already and this is another good opportunity to beat Liverpool and be in a better place. We talk about momentum and we won the last two games and we want to win the third one, especially at home with our people.

"It's going to be an incredible atmosphere and we need that. So I encourage everyone to play with us every single ball."

Arsenal and Liverpool still have 16 Premier League games left to play in 2023-24 but could their meeting at Emirates Stadium on Sunday be season-defining in the title race?

Liverpool are top of the table, five points clear of second-placed Manchester City and Arsenal in third.

Arsenal finished second in 2022-23, having led for much of the season.

Manager Jurgen Klopp will leave Liverpool at the end of the campaign and is looking to win the league for the second time.

Sunday's match (16:30 GMT) is the third between the two clubs in 2023-24, with Arsenal claiming a point when the pair met in the Premier League in December, while Liverpool ran out 2-0 winners in the FA Cup third round last month.

"We can just play the best season we can play," Klopp said.

"Arsenal, if they beat us, they are definitely there. There are so many games still to come and people like to judge already.

"We will try to make it as hard as possible for everyone who wants to finish the season above us. Let's see if we can do it."

Klopp confirmed striker Darwin Nunez is a doubt after suffering a foot injury in Wednesday's 4-1 win against Chelsea but said he has "a luxury problem" for the first time this season with multiple players fit and available to fill each position.

Arsenal are set to be without Thomas Partey once again after the Ghana midfielder suffered a "setback" in his recovery from a thigh injury.

On the challenge of facing Liverpool, Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said: "We play at home and what I sense is positivity and enthusiasm around the place.

"We had some big experiences and what we did last year was a big step. This year we want to do even better."

Meanwhile, Arteta played down the significance of a heated discussion between defenders Oleksandr Zinchenko and Ben White after Tuesday's 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest, insisting it only happened because they have a "great relationship".

Liverpool have lost just once in the Premier League this season and Wednesday's win against Chelsea, their fourth victory in succession, extended their unbeaten streak to 15 matches in the top flight.

A fifth win in a row on Sunday will leave Arsenal, who last lifted the Premier League title in 2003-04, trailing by eight points with 15 games left.

Only six teams have won the Premier League title from a position like that after 23 or more games (including teams with games in hand), but one of those was last season.

Manchester City trailed the Gunners by eight points after 28 games, albeit with a game in hand, and went on to win the title with three matches still to play.

Klopp took charge of Liverpool in October 2015 and has won six major trophies, including ending their 30-year wait for a top-flight title in 2019-20.

The German will depart after nearly nine years in the dugout this summer and ex-Blackburn striker Chris Sutton feels that will offer extra motivation for the players to deliver.

"If Liverpool go there and win, it looks like they may go all the way," Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"We all know what's going to happen at the end of the season and they have a cause to play for. They want to send their manager off with a Premier League title and they really mean business."

Former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot has labelled the encounter as "almost a must-win" for Arsenal to keep the pressure on.

"If the gap is five points now, it's almost like a must-win for Arsenal because if not, they [Liverpool] are running too far ahead," Melchiot told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"I do not see Liverpool cracking really quickly, especially the way Jurgen Klopp is building his team."

I think Liverpool were favorite before but not now after Nunez and Salah exit.

Im going for the same, 2-2 draw.

Liverpool in the league have scored a lot of goals away at the Emirates. If I can recall, we have scored 2+ goals in a lot of these matches in the past few years.

Arsenal having to back to back wins, will want to play football. They will be motivated to attack as often as they can after facing a Notts team who was very defenisve against them. Arsenal will also find space on the flanks, Saka must perform for them to win.

Liverpool are always the same, hard press, high energy and attack in numbers. Salah and likely Nunez are big misses, esp Salah who has an incredible record against Arsenal, which will also help the left back to be more settled. However LFC have other quality attacking players who are more than capable of doing damage.

It will be interesting if Conor Bradley starts, he's been brilliant in recent matches but I would prefer Trent to start, he can find the killer pass from the middle which imo will be needed.

A draw will be a decent result for Liverpool, maintaining the gap over Arsenal. If Liverpool score first, a win is very much on too.

Liverpool in the form of their life

Hate to say it as an Arsenal fan but 2-0 to LFC.

Arteta on Thomas Partey’s new injury: “They’ve been different kinds of injuries”.

“Not everything is bad luck but there are a lot of things that are difficult to control”.

“The player has an history where he’s issues in the past so we have to protect him”.

As a neutral I'm really looking forward to this game, will be interesting to see how Arsenal approach the game

In the cup game they were on the front foot and created a number of chances, sadly for them it fell to Havertz who is useless

Liverpool are in great form, they look rampant and the moment and I think they have the psychological edge too

I think it will be high scoring but think Liverpool win 3-2

Preview: Arsenal v Liverpool

It promises to be a super Sunday at Emirates Stadium as we face Liverpool for a game that could be pivotal in the Premier League title race.

Our 2-1 win away to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night saw us close the gap to two points to Jurgen Klopp's side, before they went five points clear again with a 4-1 win at home to Chelsea.

A win on Sunday would once again take us to within two points of the league leaders and return to second place ahead of Manchester City's match away to Brentford on Monday night.

Klopp's last hurrah

For Liverpool, there would be no better way to celebrate Jurgen Klopp's final season at the club than with a second Premier League title under the German boss. They're still fighting on four fronts in their quest for silverware this season.

The Reds have crucially made themselves hard to beat, losing just once in the division this season, but they were also unable to beat us in December's meeting at Anfield, when goals from Gabriel and Mohamed Salah contributed to a 1-1 draw on Merseyside.

They've had a spring in their step since then though thanks to wins against Burnley, Newcastle United and AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League, and reached the final of the Carabao Cup with a 3-2 win on aggregate over Fulham in the semi-finals.

What the managers say

Arteta
: "What we need to do is play the way we played in the last two games against them, and be more efficient in the areas that are going to decide the game.

“[I’m] very excited, it’s always great to prepare a game against Liverpool; how good they are, they dominate every aspect of the game. We play at home, and what I sense is a real sense of positivity and enthusiasm around the place.”

Klopp: "We just focus on the game, on the things we have to do, improve from the games we played against them and learn from the games we played against them because they’re really good, and try to win.

“It’s more difficult at Arsenal but we are in a good moment and we should use that as well.”

Thomas Partey will be unavailable following a setback to his recovery from a muscle injury. It remains to be seen how close to a return Fabio Vieira and Jurrien Timber are from their fitness and knee issues respectively, while Mohamed Elneny has just recently returned from the African Cup of Nations.

Takehiro Tomiyasu remains unavailable having just finished international duty with Japan in the Asian Cup on Saturday.

Liverpool will assess the fitness of Darwin Nunez, who sustained a foot injury against Chelsea on Wednesday.

Thiago has returned to full training following a hip issue but Klopp will continue to be without Mohamed Salah (hamstring), Joel Matip (knee), Kostas Tsimikas (shoulder), Stefan Bajcetic (calf) and Ben Doak (knee).

Like Tomiyasu, Endo has been away with Japan at the Asian Cup.

Facts and stats

Gabriel Martinelli has more goal contributions against Liverpool in all competitions than he has against any other opponent for us (four goals, two assists). The Brazilian netted the opener after just 58 seconds in this exact fixture last season, also assisting Bukayo Saka’s goal to give the Gunners a 2-1 lead heading into half time.

We won this exact fixture 3-2 last season, last beating Liverpool at home in consecutive Premier League campaigns in 2013/14 and 2014/15.

This will be the 200th league meeting between us and Liverpool, the fifth fixture to have been played as many times in English football history. Liverpool have won 79 to our 66 so far (54 draws).

We have taken five points from our last three Premier League games against Liverpool (W1 D2), as many as we had in our previous 12 (W1 D2 L9). We're looking to remain unbeaten in four league games against the Reds for the first time since between December 2014 and January 2016 (W1 D3).

We have opened the scoring in our last three Premier League games against Liverpool, doing so in the opening 10 minutes of the match each time. We last scored first in four straight league meetings with the Reds between August 1967 and November 1970 (a run of six).

Match officials

Anthony Taylor has been appointed to take charge of Sunday's game, having officiated 28 matches in all competitions, during which he has handed out 129 yellow cards and four reds.

He has only been the referee for one of our games so far this season - our 3-1 win at home to Manchester United in early September.

Referee: Anthony Taylor
Assistants: Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn
Fourth official: Craig Pawson
VAR: David Coote
Assistant VAR: Tim Wood

Last season at the Emirates

We ended a run of five games in all competitions without a win against Liverpool in last season's Premier League fixture at Emirates Stadium.

Gabriel Martinelli gave us the lead instantly in the first minute of the game, but Darwin Nunez pulled one back just beyond the half-hour mark.

Bukayo Saka put us ahead again with the interval approaching, before Roberto Firmino got Liverpool’s second equaliser.

Saka was the hero though with 14 minutes to go when he converted from the penalty spot to make it 3-2 to the good.

Breakdown Live

Nick Bright and Adrian Clarke are pitchside with Arsenal County Armagh for Sunday's game and, to mark Green Football Weekend, Mathieu Flamini joins Nicole Holliday.

Nick and Adrian welcome Martin Keown and Theo Walcott to the My Arsenal Rewards box while Nicole will be out and about asking supporters our Question of the Day.

DJ Target and Alexis Guerreros will be in the studio too before we hand over to Dan Roebuck and Nigel Winterburn for live commentary from Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal v Liverpool (16:30 GMT)

Arsenal are without forward Gabriel Jesus, who was a doubt with a knee injury.

Jesus and Emile Smith Rowe drop out of the team who beat Nottingham Forest in midweek, with Jorginho and Kai Havertz coming in.

Arsenal XI: Raya, White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko, Jorginho, Rice, Odegaard, Saka, Havertz, Martinelli.

Subs: Ramsdale, Smith Rowe, Nketiah, Kiwior, Soares, Trossard, Nelson, Elneny, Walters.

Liverpool make three changes from the side who beat Chelsea the other day.

Conor Bradley, whose father has died, misses out entirely, as does Dominik Szoboszlai and injury doubt Darwin Nunez is on the bench.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cody Gakpo and Ryan Gravenberch all start.

Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Konate, Van Dijk, Gomez, Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Jones, Gakpo, Jota, Diaz.

Subs: Adrian, Kelleher, Thiago, Nunez, Elliott, Robertson, Clark, McConnell, Quansah.

Arsenal started quickly like the FA Cup game, really need to start taking shots early and being clinical

What a run by Martinelli and it looked to be a certain goal. Not sure how Saka has missed that.

BUT BUT BUT

"Martinelli is a late impact sub"

Decision making in final 3rd really needs to improve, Liverpool always concede chances

You are causing them lots of problems but that final pass/shot is not the right one

This is where Liverpool do well, the more the opposition doesn't take advantage they grow and grow into the game

Gomez on a yellow card, Arsenal need to now get the ball into that area of pitch as quickly as possible

Just a repeat of the FA Cup game where we didn't really test keeper when on top. Only difference is we have got a goal this time. Lack of cutting edge ahd ruthlessness isn't there.

Need another goal asap or Liverpool will easily turn this around pronto

This is the issue, there is no ruthless to say lets put Liverpool away. At somepoint yeah they will get back into the game

Should be 2 or 3 nil up Arsenal.

Playing beautifully.

Rice controlling the match.

Good effort by Gabriel and save by Allison.

The lack of conviction fron havertz when he shoots is embarrassing

Saka taking to long to get final ball in again, slow and ponderous

There you go wasted chances all half and gift Liverpool a goal

1-1

Typical Arsenal.

Dominating yet 1 1 at half time.

Stupid goal to give away.

Liverpool equalise

It's 1-1 even though Liverpool still don't have a shot on target

This is entirely predictable, knew the longer the game went on Liverpool will get back into it

Liverpool will go on and win it now

Shambolic defending

No real shock, bound to happen when Arsenal aren't ruthless enough

Liverpool have been shambles 1st half yet its 1-1

Typical Arsenal weak mentality

I can see klopp making changes at HT or early 2nd half, as Liverpool won't play as bad as they did in 1st half

Arteta will do his usual reactive subs

Arsenal need to continue with their possession and not let their heads/shoulders drop

Nope!

But so close to the HT?
Saliba should have kicked the ball out, pathetic defending. A Tony Adams or keown kick that into row Z

The self inflicted harm this team does is a shambles, there was literally 5 seconds left in half

Feels like **** were gonna blitz Pool in the first half, no attempts on target, no penetration and still its 1-1 at HT. :ROFLMAO:

We have been poor starters all season, even the last couple of seasons esp away from home. I think we get confused whether to go all out attack and risk conceding or go defensive and get into the game. Of course playing away to top teams like Arsenal and City , they will come hard at you at home, knowing they need to take control ...otherwise.

2nd half has been a different story, we go hard at the opposition with subs coming in fresh , fully of energy.

Arsenal the better team in the first half, no doubt. But I wont say unlucky for them conceding the goal, it was poor defending and poor keeping. Raya doesn't seem to be an upgrade of a keeper.

2nd half should be a cracker. If Liverpool score first, they will score more. If Arsenal score, it will be close to the final whistle.

Draw is still the best bet.

Kiwor on for Zinchenko, he's probably gone off to see Ben White's wife.

Liverpool looking rampant now in 2nd half

Ateta looking frustrated, needs to keep his calm , it doesnt help his players.

As mentioned Liverpool have upped the tempo. Need to make some of these half chances count!

Shouting and waving like a cheer leader is all Arteta can do.

A competent manager would have got trossard or ESR by now.

Klopp looks like hes going to make proactive subs

This is his moment to show his managerial skills, now LFC have made 3 changes. This is a Klopp tactic this season, make a number of changes and go hard. Arsenal need to counter this by making some changes. Gabriel looks dodgy tonight.

Liverpool are lucky Arsenal dont have a proper striker. We shouldnt be allowing Havertz any space.

Good to see both teams going for the win, the FA cup game will be coming into the minds of the Arsenal players now.

Liverpool will raise the energy even more but cant afford to give clear chances at the other end.

Arteta is always makes his usuall subs around 70 min mark or when chasing the game. Just **** poor in game management and doesn't trust the bench players he's signed or given contracts to. This is why Arsenal won't win anything whilst he's in charge

Liverpool trying to outdo Arsenal

Never let the ball bounce as a defender, 2 defenders have learnt that the hard way today

Arsenal need to go for kill now, let's see if lessons from 1st half has been learnt

That was awful from Liverpool, didn't expect that

Still fancy them to get something from this game

Trossard on, Martinelli on

Why is havertz still on 🤦‍♂️

Martinelli fuming to be taken off, Artetas love child havertz still on

Last 10 mins + klopp time. Arsenal need a 3rd goal still here

Nelson on for saka

3-1

Good goal that.

All over. Arsenal deserved this. City will be happy.

Oh well, still 2 points ahead.

3 teams in the title race now!

Brilliant individual effort by Trossard for that 3rd goal

Great win this for Arsenal

Allison's howlers remind of when Arsenal beat united and barthez gift wrapped 2 goals

What a crazy game of football.

Jorginho and Rice different class today.

Liverpool's big guns having a nightmare.
