President Mohamed Muizzu's ruling party wins majority in Maldives elections amid anti-India policies [Post Updated #222]

There in lies the problem.

>>>>>His visit to the Lakshadweep islands, which belong to India, prompted some social media users to suggest it was a more attractive destination than the Maldives, an island nation whose economy hinges on tourism and is visited by many Indians. Some supporters of Mr Modi took it further and called for a boycott of the Maldives, prompting an angry reaction from several Maldivian politicians, three of whom were suspended by their government over the row,<<<<<

In reality

1) Modi visits Lakshwadeep. Posts pic. no mention of Maldives.

2) Maldives ministers insults Modi, and Indians on Social media

3) Indian public responds
This is the #boycottmaldives trend till the date 2024-01-06, which is before any controversy about Maldivan politicians saying anything. You can click the link yourself and read the tweets if you want. The Maldives is a small country, I'm sure their people see any little trend there is on social media about their country. unfortunately, the Maldivians will have to deal with the indian wave for the foreseeable future.

Using common sense, we can quickly assess that the Indians who were Tweeting the stated hashtag were angry about the Maldivains wanting to kick Indian soldiers out of their country(which is a reasonable demand).

The article is bait which used misrepresentation of events.

There's no need to lie when I can easily just use the advanced search feature of Twitter and confirm the article's claim. Just because you don't like something doesn't mean it's not true. Your little list looks more like make-believe than anything else.

So who started the beef?

The indian keyboard warriors it seems. A country's sovereignty and independence is a concept they seem to have trouble grasping.

that awkward moment for Maldivian idiots when reality comes back to bite them where it hurts the most

Link1: Impact of Indian tourists boycott

But not surprised to see hate emerging from yet another Islamic nation ... who would have thought!
To be fair India's ties with influential Arab countries like UAE, Saudi has been at its strongest with the lesser countries like Egypt moving towards India in a similar manner.

It's basically been;

Pakistan (which has always been the same, Pakistan has been a headache for everyone including themselves lol)

Bangladesh (Well barring their leadership, the islamic converts from that part of sub continent has been very anti India)

Maldives (same as above with the leadership), anti India and pro China, what an oxyM0ron this is, China has banned named like Mohammad, re-wrote the Quran and has been torturing Uighur muslims.

lol

China and the Maldives upgraded their relationship on Wednesday during newly elected President Mohamed Muizzu’s first state visit to Beijing, following a campaign in which he cast China’s regional rival India as a threat to sovereignty.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, speaking at the Great Hall of the People, called Muizzu “an old friend” as the Asian giant set the stage for further investment in the Indian Ocean archipelago by agreeing to a “comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership”.

“China and the Maldives’ relations are facing a historic opportunity to carry forward the past and forge ahead into the future,” Xi told Muizzu, Chinese state media reported.

Muizzu took office in November, after winning on his “India Out” campaign platform under which he called New Delhi’s huge influence a threat to sovereignty.

His government has since asked dozens of locally based Indian military personnel to leave while talking up opportunities for Chinese investors despite being heavily indebted to Beijing.

Relations between India and China nosedived after soldiers from both sides clashed in the western Himalayas in June 2020, resulting in the death of 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese troops.

By upgrading ties with the Maldives, China is setting the stage for further investment in a region where India has already seen another neighbour, Sri Lanka, gravitate towards China.

“During the talks, President Dr Muizzu expressed gratitude for China’s significant role in the Maldives’ economic success … and infrastructure development,” a statement from his presidential office read following the meeting, adding that “20 key agreements between the two countries” were signed.

The Maldives owes China $1.37 billion, or around 20 per cent of its public debt, according to World Bank data, making Beijing its biggest bilateral creditor ahead of Saudi Arabia and India, which it owes $124 million and $123 million, respectively.

Chinese firms have invested a further $1.37bn in the Maldives since it decided to join the Belt and Road Initiative in 2014, data from the American Enterprise Institute think tank shows.

“China firmly supports the Maldives in safeguarding its national sovereignty, independence and national dignity,” state media reported Xi as saying. Beijing would also be willing to “exchange experience of state governance” with Male, Xinhua said.

Muizzu was given a tour of the Chinese Communist Party Museum in Beijing ahead of meeting with Xi, a video on X, formerly known as Twitter, from his presidential office account showed.

The World Bank in an October development report on the Maldives warned further cosying up to China could spell trouble as a “build-up of sovereign exposure” had taken place during the pandemic and there was a “lack of domestic investment opportunities”.

Xi said he backed increasing the number of direct flights between the two countries, in a potential boon for the Maldives’ travel and tourism sector, which constituted 79pc of economic growth in 2022, according to the Asian Development Bank.

As I stated in my previous comment, she tweeted that after indians had already started the hashtag "#boycottmaldives". This was her response to an already-developed anti-Maldivian sentiment in the indian Twitter space.

what the sentiment behind that shirt and campaign is? Are you Maldivan? Do you speak their language?

From everything I've seen from the Maldivian government, this is an anti-Indian military campaign, not an anti-Indian civilian one. They haven't been kicking out normal indians from their country.

It's their right to not want a specific country's army in their home.

These characters are getting bolder by the day. Good thing the bigotry is being exposed more clearly now.

Indians actually dealt with the situation well and only defended their own country & PM. They could have said much worse to her and then she & likes of you would be the first one to cry & become victim

1. you are not the overseer of all Indian social media activity. There's no way you can judge everything that was written about the woman in question because there are too many Indians making too many tweets/comments about the topic. It's not physically possible to read every comment unless you have nothing other to do other than to scroll Twitter.

2. I don't think throwing a tamper tantrum can be considered "dealing with the situation well" but that's just my opinion I guess.

BTW, those 3 politicians were only fired after the backlash from India. It is not as if Maldives fired them from their own conscience.

Stating this reeks of insecurity.

Now going back to my original question, pls tell us how India started this beef? The question I am asking since yesterday but you fail to answer.

My previous posts were regarding the stupidity of hating a small island nation. Concerning your question, post-Modi's photoshoot Indians started trending #BoycottMaldives, to which some junior Maldivian politicians replied by making fun of Modi and india to some extent.

I'm basing my timeline on this article.

"Supporters of Mr Modi called for Indians to shun the Maldives and instead visit Lakshadweep. ‘BoycottMaldives’ began trending on social media, prompting fierce reactions from Maldivians."

It is ironical that the lady minister with that look and attire tried to act racist.

Hold on a second, what do you mean by this? What's wrong with her look and attire?

1. Not sure why would you say it reeks of insecurity. You said Indian bollywood stars unnecessarily reacted when Maldives already fired those 3 ministers. That is a lie, they only got fired after Indian celebrities raised objection.

2. Don't know what that article is all about but even if few Modi supporters trended Boycott Maldives, do you think it commanded Maldivian ministers to resort to racist jibe? These are elected representatives and not some no named twitter users.

3. It is ironic that you are yet to condemn about the racists & xenophobic comment made by that disgusting lady minister

You can keep on looking it from a green tinted glass but the fact is Maldives had bitten more than it could chew, got scared by the backlash from Indians, realized their worth and forced to fire those 3 ministers. They thought Narendra Modi is some dodgy backpacking 3rd world countries prime minister and they could get away with any making any statement against him. Unfortunately they learned their lesson in a harsh fashion.

Some Indians on social media rant and and in response ministers of a nation responds by attacking the PM of India and it is GOI's fault? got it.

The only indian military presence in Maldives from my understanding is to operate the rescue aircraft as @DeadlyVenom pointed out.

To remove them is key part of current maldivian govt campaign to get elected then there are things which come with it. It can be interpreted as an all out anti-india campaign by indian public.

It's their right to not want a specific country's army in their home.
Yes, it is within maldives right and it is within right of Indian public to express their opinion.

As I said, everyone gets what they want. Maldives gets rid of indians and indians avoid Maldives.

win win

It's their right to not want a specific country's army in their home. No need to be creeps about it, move your bases to somewhere else. I heard there are some barren Islands named Lakshadweep that could be an ideal area to relocate.
Looks like there is all of two choppers and one dornier aircaft, belonging to india, used in part by Maldive for rescue also.

If maldives wants indians out, those assets should be removed also.

Maldives doesn’t have to worry about loss of Indian tourists. Their president already requested China to send the replacement tourists.

Would indian gov ever suspend any minister over insulting remarks towards any other country? I think not. especially when it comes to their arch-rival Pakistan, They will honor that minister for doing such stuff. Maldives did what they had to do and should do. You are not allowed to say any bad things about anyone.

It clearly shows the hatred/bias people have against a particular country/party/leader which makes them defend the indefensibly.

Instead of condemning the remarks by representatives of the government of Maldives, people are trying to justify it being whatever means necessary.

The fact is government officials cannot and should not react to Twitter trolls, they are representatives of a government and not some jobless online keyboard warriors.

I don’t think you understand how the world works.
Let me give you an example:

A year or so ago, BJP spokeswoman (not a minister) said something bad about Prophet Mohammed. BJP didn’t say anything.
Then her comment spread to Middle East countries and a lot of middle eastern countries threatened India financially, BJP immediately fired that spokeswoman and distanced themselves from her comments.
This appeased the middle eastern countries and life moved on as normal.

Later on Another BJP MP said anti Muslim racist/xenophobic statements in the parliament against a Muslim MP, he was not punished by the BJP but rewarded by giving him a post for upcoming election campaign.
There was no financial loss by those statements and it appeased the BJP hindi belt vote bank, BJP didn’t take any action and rather befitted from those remarks.

That’s how the world works.

Same thing the Maldives government did, no government wants to ruin relations with a country which susbstantially benefits them financially.

Had these Maldives ministers gone on a rant against some broke African nation like Niger or CAR no one would have been fired and no one would have cared about it.

India and Pakistan are not friendly countries.

India has been a major partner of Maldives for along time.

Indian military actually was called up on by Maldives govt to deal with mercenaries.

>>>Following this, President Gayoom contacted the Indian government for assistance. India swiftly accepted their request and an emergency meeting was arranged at the Secretariat Building in New Delhi. Within 16 hours of the SOS, India was ready to commence their operation.<<<

So, for govt ministers to attack a PM of a benefactor nation over twitter trolls is plain sily.

Lol what ?????

I didn't run away my father took the whole family to the US when I was a kid...

My kids are taught on both Hindu and Christian values, its upto them how they choose to live when they get older.

Do you know what a convert is ? It is what Usman Khawaja has done by getting his wife to convert to Islam...

My kids in the future may become atheist when they come of age and if that does happen it don't bother me 😂

This is a very accurate thread and something I have been saying from my first post in this thread. It is clear that Maldives took unnecessary fight with India when Indian PM was simply minding his own business by promoting tourism in Lakshwadeep. Their elected representatives resorted to downright filthy comments which promoted strong reaction from Indians. Rather than condemning those crass comments, people are blaming Indians for their reaction. It is a case of clear bias.

Everytime India is not at fault, isn't it? How difficult it is to condemn the racist and xenophobic comments and move on? But nehi...hum to kaise bhi India ko blame karna hai

It's fine. We Indians need to learn the art of ignoring the irrelevant voices that have no say or sway whatsoever in our sphere of existence.

We weren't arguing about the reason why those 3 Maldivian junior politicians were fired, you felt the need to bring up India's involvement in their departure which by all means feels like severe insecurity.

I never connected the bolly stars with the firing of the ministers, that was merely the fragment of your imagination. Unfortunately, bad fate arguments are a part of the parcel when interacting with indians here.

Let me get this straight.

Some Indians on social media rant and and in response ministers of a nation responds by attacking the PM of India and it is GOI's fault? got it.

...Well, I didn't blame the gov, I blamed indians in general. Indians(on social) seem to have a problem with countries making their own decisions.

I merely pointed out the cause.

What else India out mean? it is not in maldivian language. Its in english

The only indian military presence in Maldives from my understanding is to operate the rescue aircraft as @DeadlyVenom pointed out.

To remove them is key part of current maldivian govt campaign to get elected then there are things which come with it. It can be interpreted as an all out anti-india campaign by indian public.

That would be stupid of the indian public to assume. For a small nation like the Maldives, even the presence of 75 foreign soldiers can be perceived as a threat.

"Solih had followed an "India first" policy but Muizzu in his election campaign promised to remove a small Indian military presence of some 75 personnel in Maldives."

"The focus is not on the actual number of military personnel here, it is on not having any at all in the Maldives. We will discuss with the Indian government and find out a way forward for this."
The coalition backing Muizzu is known to be close to China but Muizzu told Reuters he was not pro-China or anti any country.
"So I’m sure our friends in the Indian leadership will agree that we have a shared interest in creating a reservoir of respect which will be beneficial not just for the Maldives and India, but also for the stability and security of the Indian Ocean region as well."

The statements above seem very reasonable.

It's their country and they have the right to decide what happens in it. No need to get upset about that.

Yes, it is within maldives right and it is within right of Indian public to express their opinion.

As I said, everyone gets what they want. Maldives gets rid of indians and indians avoid Maldives.

Cool, don't go to the Maldives. Not sure why you think I'd care.

Looks like there is all of two choppers and one dornier aircaft, belonging to india, used in part by Maldive for rescue also.

Those should be removed, that's the entire point.

Your response has been a whole lot of nothing.

Let me make it clear for you then since you thought I am running away. There is lots of islamophobia in the world and many people face borderline racism due to their attire/looks. Keeping this in mind, this lady minister should have been the last person hurling racism and xenophobic comments against others. Indians were actually measured in their response and only defended their country/PM. The could have resorted to much worst Islamophobic racist taunts given that ministers looks and attire. She should have stayed away from it and hopefully this suspension has taught her a harsh lesson.

I think you have given an accurate summation of how the world works, definitely how the most Bharati people mindset works, which is basically survival of the fittest/morality is decided by the $$'s.

That is mostly true but that doesn't mean that the overlords get a free ride. Resistance then takes form of guerilla warfare, and this is a good thing for the world's future. Power and money are in a constant state of flux, today's titans can become tomorrow's losers.

You don't need to define "bigotry" when there's already an academic definition of it. A lot of indians on here fit that definition.

Sometimes a bigot calls others bigots when the other side is merely reacting.

Then they need to be reminded the definition of bigotry.

You don't need to act like you're talking to an imaginary friend when replying to me. You can refer to me directly.

That is why I said in my very first post to read the post #30 and let us know how was this beef started by India?

Remember writing this? Does it ring a bell?

Let me make it clear for you then since you thought I am running away. There is lots of islamophobia in the world and many people face borderline racism due to their attire/looks. Keeping this in mind, this lady minister should have been the last person hurling racism and xenophobic comments against others.
It is ironical that the lady minister with that look and attire tried to act racist.

Is this the first thing that comes to your head when you see a veiled woman? You're just projecting your thoughts to others.

It's like a white guy saying "This black guy sure does talk a lot for a guy with his skin tone". Why would you even start a conversation like that?

By the same definition you should say the same if an indian says something stupid since unfortunately, indians are also the recipient of a lot of racism.

Do you think some people(like white people) are more justified in spewing racism or bigotry? Since it wouldn't be "ironical" for them, lol.

Indians were actually measured in their response and only defended their country/PM. The could have resorted to much worst Islamophobic racist taunts given that ministers looks and attire. She should have stayed away from it and hopefully this suspension has taught her a harsh lesson.

How did you come to this conclusion? Because there's no way you have read every comment an indian has made about this lady. There's no conceivable way you could know, so why are you making stuff up?

Did you think I was just gonna take your word for it?

It took me 2-4 minutes to find multiple indians making racist remarks against all Maldivians with thousands of likes. The kind of stuff that would get me banned on here if I posted it, that's how bad it is.

"There's no way indians could've made Islamophobic or racist taunts because Rajdeep said so".

Last edited by a moderator:

Here is the thing, you are incorrect. Let me repeat again, Modi visited Lakshadweep Island and promoted tourism of that place. Below is what is reported in BBC:

The three Maldivian officials made the controversial comments in response to Mr Modi's post on X (formerly Twitter) which included photos promoting tourism to the Indian island chain of Lakshadweep.
Following the uproar, many Indians on social media said they were cancelling their holiday plans in the Maldives.

So not sure what your dodgy proof is but its clear Maldives started this beef. That is why I said refer to post #30

What I am saying is correct though. The community that cries of Islamophobia and racism all over the world should not be racist towards others. And I agree, if any Indian hurl racial abuse against blacks for example, they will get more racist abuse than a white person. That is how the world works. For example, when Donald Trump says curb down on immigration people calls him racist but when certain Rishi Sunak says stop the boats people double down on him reminding him of his color of the skin. That is how it is and I am only saying the way world functions

Don't make me laugh. You can't be delusional enough to believe this.
Don't be silly...no one has time read all the tweets made by Indians on this topic. However, the general response by Indians (bollywood/cricketers etc.) being more about defending India and their own PM rather than attacking this lady racially. If it was other way around, we all know how things will stand.

You have clearly lost the plot and hell bent of defending Maldives just bcoz it is an Islamic country and it made statements against India (a country you hate).

Refer to post #81 and read it slowly. I can't manually feed you the simplest information.

If you don't understand it again then work on your comprehension skills.

It's funny how you have an unfounded superiority complex on one hand and the other you have a severe inferiority complex.

The race or other attributes of a person don't matter when assessing something potentially offensive they said. Any sane person should only look at the individual and their comments, not at things that aren't even relevant to the discussion. It doesn't matter if the bigot is white, black, brown, or blue, everyone needs to make an effort to not fall into racist stereotypes. And if someone needs to be called out, then they'll be called out for their bigotry, not their background.

You sound like such a child.

Don't be silly...no one has time read all the tweets made by Indians on this topic. However, the general response by Indians (bollywood/cricketers etc.) being more about defending India and their own PM rather than attacking this lady racially. If it was other way around, we all know how things will stand.

Every time I think you can't write anything more ridiculous you surprise me.

Bolly stars and cricketers are not representative of the general indian populous, if you didn't know that already then I don't know what to tell you.

You have clearly lost the plot and hell bent of defending Maldives just bcoz it is an Islamic country and it made statements against India (a country you hate).

Here comes out the victim card again. First of all, I'm not religious, second of all, this has nothing to do with you being indian. I'm not defending the Maldives as much as I'm saying that they have the right to their sovereignty. Indians brought out the #boycottMaldives trend, and they should be called out for that. If you don't agree with my reasoning then it probably has something to do with your "orange-tainted glasses".

Maldives Asks India To Withdraw Military Personnel By March 15: Report

Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu has given a deadline to India to withdraw its troops from the island nation. The Maldivian President said the Indian military personnel should leave the nation by March 15. The development comes a few days after Mohamed Muizzu met Xi Jinping on his first state visit to China after being elected.

Maldives recently upgraded ties with China after a diplomatic row between India and Maldives erupted after Maldivian ministers made derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi post his visit to Lakshadweep islands. The three ministers were sacked and the Maldivian Opposition criticised the comments, but the President said "We may be small but no one has the license to bully us".

What Maldives Said?

Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, the public policy secretary at the President's Office, said, "Indian military personnel cannot stay in the Maldives. This is the policy of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and that of this administration." According to reports, around 88 Indian troops are present in Maldives.

The Maldives President's deadline comes almost two months after he called for a withdrawal of Indian troops and said the nation "has to ensure that there is no presence of a foreign military on their soil". The current Maldivian President came to power with his "India Out" campaign. The withdrawal of the Indian troops from Maldives was a key election promise of Muizzu.

Maldives and India have set up a high-level core group to negotiate the withdrawal of troops. The group held its first meeting at the Foreign Ministry Headquarters in Male' on Sunday morning. Indian High Commissioner Munu Mahawar also attended the meeting, the report said.

Nazim confirmed the meeting and said the agenda for the meeting was the request to withdraw troops by March 15. The Indian government did not immediately confirm or comment on the media report.

"Workable Solution"

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju visited the Maldives in November and met the current President. Sources in the Indian Government told NDTV earlier that the two sides agreed to a "workable solution" to continue the use of Indian military platforms by the island nation as they serve the interests of its people.

These personnel operate India-sponsored radars and surveillance aircraft. Indian warships in the region help patrol the country's exclusive economic zone. Despite its small size, the Maldives plays a significant role in regional politics, particularly due to the strategic maritime passages in its northern and southern parts, making it a key toll gate in the Indian Ocean.

President Muizzu earlier acknowledged the significant role of two Indian helicopters, the Dhruv, in numerous emergency medical evacuations. This small group of Indian soldiers have been stationed in the Maldives for several years now.

Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs had said India's cooperation with Maldives is based on jointly addressing shared challenges and priorities.

India's assistance and platforms have contributed significantly to public welfare, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, and in combating illegal maritime activities in the island nation, the ministry said.

No Sudden Shift

The shift from Ibrahim Solih's (President before Muizzu) "India First" policy to "India Out" is not sudden. Ibrahim Solih's predecessor, Abdullah Yameen, is said to be the first Maldivian leader who started the campaign against India in 2013 and brought the island nation's ties closer to China. His successor Ibrahim Solih maintained friendly ties with India during his tenure from 2018 to 2023. The role of social media and Maldives' Dhiyares News is considered significant in crafting the narrative against India during Abdullah Yameen's term.

Abdulla Yameen was barred from contesting the election because of a criminal conviction and an 11-year jail term for corruption, he nominated Muizzu.

Muizzu earlier said he did not intend to upend the regional balance by replacing the Indian military with Chinese troops. The Maldives President is trying to strike a fine balance in its ties with India and China. Beijing has economic interests in Maldives and is its largest external creditor, but China's debt trap policy raises concerns that the island nation may fall prey to the policy.

Indian tourists represent around 10% of all tourists in Maldives (reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tourism_in_the_Maldives#Arrivals_by_country). That's not "heavily dependent".

They receive tourists from many countries.

Maldives Tells India to Withdraw Troops by March as Row Deepens

The Maldivian president told India Sunday to withdraw its nearly 100 troops by March 15, a day after returning from China where he signed a raft of deals.

New Delhi considers the Indian Ocean archipelago to be within its sphere of influence, but the Maldives has shifted into the orbit of China -- its largest external creditor.

The March deadline was set during talks with Indian officials in the Maldives on Sunday, a top aide to President Mohamed Muizzu said, honoring the leader's long-standing election pledge.

"The president put forth this request at the meeting of the high-level committee between the two nations... the proposal is currently under consideration," Muizzu's Public Policy Secretary Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim told reporters.

India has a deployment of about 89 personnel, including medical staff, to operate three aircraft to patrol the archipelago's vast maritime territory.

New Delhi's foreign ministry said Sunday diplomats had discussed how to find a "mutually workable solution" to allow continued Indian air operations that it said provided "humanitarian and medevac (medical evacuation)" services.

It said a further round of talks would be held, without giving a date.

Muizzu came to power in September after pledging to evict Indian forces.

On Saturday, after arriving in the capital Male, the president said that while the Maldives may be small, the country will not be bullied.

"We are not a country that is in the backyard of another country. We are an independent nation," Muizzu said.

"This territorial integrity policy is one that China respects", he said in the nation's Dhivehi language, the Mihaaru newspaper reported.

With Beijing and New Delhi tussling for influence, Muizzu was elected in September after pledging to cultivate "strong ties" with China.

"We may be small, but that doesn't give you the license to bully us," Muizzu said, in a final comment in English.

He has denied seeking to redraw the regional balance by bringing in Chinese forces to replace Indian troops.

Muizzu's trip to China this week was his first state visit since becoming president.

China's state broadcaster CCTV said deals included "infrastructure construction, medical care and health care, improvement of people's livelihoods, new energy sources, agriculture and marine environmental protection" agreements.

Tensions with New Delhi flared after three of Muizzu's junior ministers reportedly called Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "clown" and a "terrorist" in since-deleted social media posts earlier this month.

Bollywood actors and some of India's cricket greats responded with calls for compatriots to boycott their southern neighbor and instead book their next holidays closer to home.

Tourism accounts for nearly a third of the Maldives's economy, with Indians making up the largest share of foreign arrivals.

Muizzu said the Maldives will also slash reliance on India for healthcare and medicine, adding more countries where citizens needing government-paid health treatment abroad can go.

Most eligible citizens currently get treatment in India, as well as small numbers in Sri Lanka and Thailand, officials said.

But Muizzu said the government would "diminish reliance on... a select group of countries," without specifically mentioning India, and would now support treatment also in the United Arab Emirates.

Most pharmaceuticals in the Maldives are currently imported from India, and Male will now seek to import medicines from the United States and European nations, he said.

At the same time, Muizzu, the former capital's mayor, suffered his first electoral setback as his party's candidate lost the vote to replace him.

Adam Azim of the former ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which is seen as more pro-Indian, won the seat.

Not India, it’s Maldives who is heading towards radicalism under new regime

Still it’s a significant numbers, that number would have increased in current year if present Maldives government not acted religiously……Any country who depend on tourism should maintain cordial relations with all countries.

IMO Maldives is heading towards situation iske Afghanistan

Indians don't need to go Maldives. It has drastically radicalized in the last couple of decades. It's the country with the highest per capita of ISIS terrorists. Typically these countries are stooges of the Chinese. Maldives ain't cheap and there are many places in Asia including India that can cater to beach tourists.

Does talking against Modi or asking for Indian troops to be removed mean "being radicalized"?

On one hand, you say the country is radicalized. On the other hand, you say the country is the stooge of China. Both can't be true at the same time. Make up your mind.

True…. Some nations don’t digest the success of Modi as world leader, last any years he ranked as No.1 leader in popularity…

Some countries don’t digesting this achievement of Modi… new Maldives president muizzu looks like puppet of Erdogan

Maldives has the highest per capita isis terrorists lel. Do you consider isis to be radical?

"Islamic converts". Is it supposed to be an insult? LOL.

I am glad they converted. Wish more would've converted. Wish they converted sooner. Rest will convert in the future (in sha Allah).

Light is always superior to darkness.
Great then please don’t give us a lecture on Israel-Palestine issues coz Israel are doing exactly what Ghazni etc did to SC.

the situations aren't the same. Apple and orange.

Also, time period matters. During those days, warfare and conquests were common. Even many non-Muslim empires used to invade each other. But, those days are gone now.

Finally, many people in subcontinent converted voluntarily if I am not wrong. Even to this day, many people are converting to Islam by choices. Nobody is being forced; they are attracted by Islam's beauty. Fastest growing religion in the world.

Do you understand how "highest per capita" works? Country that has a small population is likely to rank higher. It is basic mathematics.

Maldives has a small population. So, even if 2000 join ISIS, they are likely to rank higher.

If Maldives people support ISIS (as some clueless Indians are insinuating), why are they pro-China? Are you saying ISIS is pro-China?

Lol wut, lots of countries with very small populations but don't have a rate as high as the Maldives

Maldives needs money. Their main income economy depends on tourism. They decided to go with China by dumping India of course. If Saudis decide to give money to Maldives tomorrow, they will go towards Saudis by dumping China.

They also have another aspect to their country. Outside of the tourist spots, Maldives is a very poor and a very conservative Islamic country that follows Sharia law. All of its citizens must only practice Islam. No other religion is allowed there since 1997. A hot bed for Islamic extremists. Poverty and conservative religion = Sitting ducks for ISIS to recruit.

Please show a map of the SC?

I may be mistaken but weren't Hindu Shahis engaged in wars with other Hindu kingdoms when Ghazni was fighting. Were they sitting around drinking cow cola happily until Ghazni etc arrived?

Hindu Shahis fighting with other Hindu Kingdoms does not mean Ghazni has the right to come and occupy subcontinent.

Will US or UK get right to occupy Afghanistan or Middle East just because various Muslim groups are fighting there all the time? Turks were just Lootere.

Muslims have nothing to do with this thread and Maldives-India conflict. No need to discuss irrelevant stuff and derail the thread now. Thanks

What? This makes absolutely zero sense. What does indians going there on holiday have anything to do with the increasing radicalization of the Maldives

I agree you make little sense. On the one hand you are implying that Maldives is a hotbed of ISIS, at the same time Indians are flocking there for holidays. Is it normal for Indians to go to growing epicentres of terrorism to relax and have fun? Are you that type of lunatic who picks such a place for vacation?

This is so sad, I know you can do better. Come up with an actual argument next time and not just something which makes you giggle in the mirror

What a lame response. I addressed your points directly, dismantled them and handed them back to you. If you can't explain your own reasoning then just stay quiet and leave the thread.

Yes capt, you absolutely destroyed and humiliated me. What an absolute trashing.
The Maldives has radicalized a lot, but it's a country who's economy is still dependent on tourism.
Indians, go there for the same reason that your friends- the Chinese go for, it's a good tourist spot and has marketed itself pretty well.
But they weren't aware of the increasing radicalization of the Maldives, which they must be as of now, so they will probably stop going to the Maldives

People who criticize west and their foreign policy 24/7 but still lives there and makes a livelihood are the ones complaining why Indian's visit Maldives as tourists if they think it is an extremist country.

#Irony

People who criticise Maldives as an extremist country yet at the same time vote in a govt with roots in radical hindu extremism while living outside of India....well that tells you everything about their objectivity.

Oh Sir in that logic Saudi has been bombing Yemen why the outrage when Israel is doing it?

There is no radical Hindu extremist organization anywhere in the world. There is no Hindu organization marked as terror outfit in United Nations charter. There was no Osama Bid Laden hiding in India. This term 'Hindu Terrorism' is a figment of imagination from Pakistanis to do whataboutery but unfortunately no one buys it. Won't work.

Terrorism is a word invented to advance western interests across the globe. Hence ethnic cleansing of Myanamar was met with a shrug of the shoulders over here. Same applies for mass slaughter carried out on ethnic minorities in Bharat or Indian occupied Kashmir.

People here playing with words, but the bigotry is there for all to see.

That is a different discussion and we can always debate on the definition of terrorism. However, the way it is accepted globally, there is no Hindu version of ISIS or Al Qaeda and neither any Hindu organization is listed in global terror list. Hindus didn't go and took down the twin towers or bombed London Undergrounds or Paris metro's. So these irresponsible jargons of Hindu extremism or Hindu terrorism may fly well in the world of internet among people share your similar views but in wider scheme of things they have no relevance.

If Maldives want Indian troops out and be close to China, they have the right and sovereignty to do so. It is for Maldivian people and government to decide.

It is very foolish to call Maldives "hotbed of ISIS" just because Maldives people are criticizing Modi. Criticizing Modi doesn't mean a person is radicalized. I know many non-Muslim Indians who don't like Modi.

95% of the world hindus live in India.

Is there Hindu terrorism in India? Yes.

If Indian government can't be bothered putting them on proscribed terror lists then thats their issue not the world's.

Oh Sir in that logic Saudi has been bombing Yemen why the outrage when Israel is doing it?
Saudi launched a brutal war.

But they were asked to intervene on behalf of elected government of Yemen.

There was plenty of outrage at the actions of the Saudi led coalition. However they were not occupying and displacing Yemenis, nor were they backed by foreign governments in the way the Israelis are.

If you think we are hypocritical then please read the statement of the UN, human rights organisations and even the south african case in the ICJ.

They don't know about Ghazni and the history of the SC but have plenty to say about Israel.

From what I read, India only has a few rescue helicopters in Maldives and some trained army men who do maintenance, repair and rescue operations. India also has built hospitals there that provides essential services to Maldivians.
It is not like India has thousands of troops there. This whole anti-India rhetoric from their President Maizzu is hilarious. He is completely in Chinese pockets. Dude was begging China to send in more tourists to offset losses from Indian tourists.

200 people from such tiny Islands is a lot to join ISIS. Anyway, I am glad that India is pulling out of Maldives. Let them hang onto Chinese. China does not do anything for free. They give massive loans to countries that cannot afford them. Maldives can easily go the Srilankan way. Hope it works out for them.
