President Trump announces trade deal between India & USA

The EU FTA is an example of how to hedge against Trumps mercurial nature.

I assume Modi will sign deals with other big blocks like Mercosur, Canada and Australia to reduce the impact of Trumps mood swings.

Bharat is the Final Authority of the Indian Subcontinent.

Trump is taking on Iran only after India okays processing of Venezuelan oil in its massive refineries.

He wouldn't want oil price to go up too much and stay there. Indian refined VZ oil will prevent that if war prolongs unexpectedly.

Although situation can't be like the pre Trump times, what really matters is India have got a better deal than Vietnam and Bangladesh, with whom it competes for exports to the USA. Also despite so much boot licking or what not licking of Trump by Sharif and Asim Manir, still the deal is better by 1 %.

Good little diplomatic win by Modi team in this Trump madness era. Chhoti khushiyan. I wonder what Trump's favourite field marshall thinks about this deal.

Good deal for India. Perhaps the deal would have been lot more sweeter had Modi nominated Trump for Nobel peace prize.

One little thing of concern is that India has to buy oil from US and Venezuela at much higher prices than what Russia was offering.

Overall, it is a good deal. India needs US. A long term lukewarm relations is not good for India. India should use this opportunity to completely dominate the Textile industry. Can export to EU and US. Lets see what India does in the next 2 yrs.

Highly doubt India will stop buying Russian oil...it will be reduced..we have massive oil needs..we will probably diversify away from Iran ...no way India will betray Putin

Trade Deal (15-19%) Tariffs
Nuclear Energy
AI & Data Centre investments
India joining Pax Silica
India lifting US LNG !

India’s strategy of sealing FTA with EU, UK & New Zealand without Agriculture & Dairy has likely worked precipitating Washington to run and seal the deal before it is left out.

France, Brazil & Canada are also rushing for similar deals with India in February & March 2026. India’s red lines on Agro & Dairy would be respected.

India will never compromised with bolded parts with anyone's.

India needs US and the trade wirh US to grow faster. I doubt India will completely stop purchasing Russian oil. Even with costly American oil, this is deal is fine for India.

EU and USA are obsessed with wanting to cut India off from Russia.

But our relation with Russia is mature, long term and strategic. We will continue to engage with them positively exercising our full strategic autonomy. This is what’s it’s been about from the beginning otherwise these deals would have been signed months ago.

The whine delay was to pull off the greatest balancing act of all time by Modi. He pulled it off.

He’s not Imran fanboy but a true Pakistani patriot and a genuine Muslim. I could have used the term devout Muslim also but he had a colourful past about which I cannot comment here.

Deal is dependent on India not buying Indian oil. Realistically it would have been achieved many months ago but Indians wanted to continue trying to exert some fake authority.
But by eventually capitulating Modi has achieved a good outcome and it takes a wise leader to know when it's time to wave the white flag, we know from past experiences Modi has no qualms surrendering at the request of US.

India’s appetite for oil is huge and no single country can satisfy it.

Honestly we will buy oil from all of them from time to time.

Bro ! It's a majburi. You have to take care of your citizens. It's American people who have elected him and India and Pakistan have to simply deal with whoever is there as an American president. In Pakistan's case it's a much bigger majburi in terms of IMF loans etc. You can't change long established structures in one go. Many so called allies have seen the true face of America and are diversifying their trades and investments.

Facts you also must remember, China betrayed USSR for American dollars in Cold war that is how it made progress into the current china that we see with the FDI from the US. The Islamic Mullah regime is forcefully sitting there, Iranian don't like it anymore.

this is pretty important to India. They have been able to hold their own with 50% tariff. Now with EU FTA and reduced tariffs they will come very hard at Pakistan/BD exports, especially garment exports. Expect India to triple its garment exports by end of this decade.

Australia is already done. By end of March India is expected to sign big defense deal with Germany and also Uranimum procurement deal with Canada. Canada PM is also expected to visit India in March to reset the relationship. It is going to be an interesting year

It will minimize as the trade wirh US is much more important. The China points stays valid still. China is it current position because of American dollars

What's holding India back is the corrupt and inefficient bureaucracy. India doesn't depend on US handouts. Situation was fine even with 50 percent tariffs. It forced Indian administration guys to deal quickly with EU. So the additional tariff by Trump did good to India for the long term.

Here in the UK we have felt the Ukraine war directly.

Ukrainian took a punga with Russia egged on by Britain and EU who offered them EU and NATO status only to give them zilch, made our bills sky high.

Even if goods were unaffected by Ukraine war everywhere raised their costs.

Poor Ukrainian people suffered badly too and their country got nothing in return.

That is the lesson from the India-US trade deal.

Indians tolerated 50% tariffs for months.

They would have even tolerated 500%.

But Indians will not be spoken down to or humiliated like many other leaders and their countries were.

Never give the bully the satisfaction that intimidation works.

Trade deals are negotiable. Respect and Dignity aren't.

That was fast. The Americans were probably thinking, if the EU itself is doing a trade deal with India, why are we fighting with them?

If the EU deal is a medium-term expansion plan, this one is a much needed short term boost and relief. Some Indian companies with loyal customer bases in the US were hit by the tariffs. Royal Enfield for example chose to absorb the tariff cost and that decision has paid off beautifully now.

The reduction in Russian oil imports isn’t a major issue for us. The EU is preparing legislation to block the flow of Russian oil (crude or refined) into Europe. We’re already shifting suppliers in anticipation. This is a win no matter how you look at it.

I reminded another poster yesterday of the fable of the jackal trying to benefit while two goats fight. The jackal in this story should be obvious lol.

It will be interesting to see how Dhaka reacts too. Chances are that they’ve received the message from WA.

I think the negotiators are rooted to ground realities.They were engaged intensely outside of the noise.As India have not yielded on agri sector they may have went for oil imports.

I dont think relations will be normal with bng again.Even though its a coup, they let Chinese ambassador near the testa project and getting them set up a defence EZ. Its not political. Its policy due to religious extremism and bigotry. Ex Indian hockey player dhanraj pillai once said about hockey tournaments in bng " even in 98 , there were two factions at every place in Dhaka. One is pro Indian and other is pro pak".
