President Trump announces trade deal between India & USA

Beginning of a new era

Under the decisive leadership of PM @NarendraModi ji, India has reached a framework for an Interim Agreement with the US. This will open a $30 trillion market for Indian exporters, especially MSMEs, farmers and fishermen. The increase in exports will create lakhs of new job opportunities for our women and youth.

As part of this framework, the US will slash reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods to 18%, providing a huge market opportunity in key sectors such as textiles & apparel, leather & footwear, plastic & rubber products, organic chemicals, home décor, artisanal products, and select machinery in the world’s largest economy.

Additionally, tariffs will go down to zero on a wide range of goods, including generic pharmaceuticals, gems & diamonds, and aircraft parts, thereby further enhancing India’s export competitiveness and Make in India.

India will also get exemptions under section 232 on aircraft parts, tariff rate quota on auto parts and negotiated outcomes on generic pharmaceuticals, leading to tangible export gains in these sectors.

At the same time, the Agreement reflects India’s commitment to safeguarding farmers’ interests and sustaining rural livelihoods by completely protecting sensitive agricultural and dairy products, including maize, wheat, rice, soya, poultry, milk, cheese, ethanol(fuel), tobacco, certain vegetables, meat, etc.

This agreement will help India and the US remain focused on working together to further deepen economic cooperation, reflecting shared commitment to sustainable growth for our people and businesses.

Towards realising Viksit Bharat !

Well I understand, it's a human tendency to be suspicious. Do you not suspect anything, when Trump(a close friend of Epstein) calls Asim Munir his favourite field marshall?Trump is a fancy guy, anything is possible. Especially after Trump had a 2 hour long one to one closed door meeting with him.
I have no issues with saying how ridiculous the Trump pandering is, no.

However the Epstein files name Modi dancing for Trump. It’s there in the files. Whatever happened in a meeting room with Trump and Asim seems to be in your imagination, not in the files. If something about him comes out in the files that deserves condemnation, many Pakistanis won’t have an issue to do so.

On this forum alone you can see how many people are critical of the army when they need to be and support it when they need to as well.

However with modi fans, which seems to be the majority of the Indian users on here (not all), it seems like one way traffic for the most part.

UNITED STATES-INDIA JOINT STATEMENT

The United States of America (United States) and India are pleased to announce that they have reached a framework for an Interim Agreement regarding reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade (Interim Agreement). Today’s framework reaffirms the countries’ commitment to the broader U.S.-India Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) negotiations, launched by President Donald J. Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2025, which will include additional market access commitments and support more resilient supply chains. The Interim Agreement between the United States and India will represent a historic milestone in our countries’ partnership, demonstrating a common commitment to reciprocal and balanced trade based on mutual interests and concrete outcomes.

Key terms of the Interim Agreement between the United States and India will include:

  • India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on all U.S. industrial goods and a wide range of U.S. food and agricultural products, including dried distillers’ grains (DDGs), red sorghum for animal feed, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruit, soybean oil, wine and spirits, and additional products.
  • The United States will apply a reciprocal tariff rate of 18 percent under Executive Order 14257 of April 2, 2025 (Regulating Imports With a Reciprocal Tariff to Rectify Trade Practices That Contribute to Large and Persistent Annual United States Goods Trade Deficits), as amended, on originating goods of India, including textile and apparel, leather and footwear, plastic and rubber, organic chemicals, home décor, artisanal products, and certain machinery, and, subject to the successful conclusion of the Interim Agreement, will remove the reciprocal tariff on a wide range of goods identified in the Potential Tariff Adjustments for Aligned Partners Annex to Executive Order 14346 of September 5, 2025 (Modifying the Scope of Reciprocal Tariffs and Establishing Procedures for Implementing Trade and Security Agreements), as amended, including generic pharmaceuticals, gems and diamonds, and aircraft parts.
  • The United States will also remove tariffs on certain aircraft and aircraft parts of India imposed to eliminate threats to national security found in Proclamation 9704 of March 8, 2018 (Adjusting Imports of Aluminum Into the United States), as amended; Proclamation 9705 of March 8, 2018 (Adjusting Imports of Steel Into the United States), as amended; and Proclamation 10962 of July 30, 2025 (Adjusting Imports of Copper Into the United States). Similarly, consistent with U.S. national security requirements, India will receive a preferential tariff rate quota for automotive parts subject to the tariff imposed to eliminate threats to national security found in Proclamation 9888 of May 17, 2019 (Adjusting Imports of Automobiles and Automobile Parts Into the United States), as amended. Contingent on the findings of the U.S. Section 232 investigation of pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical ingredients, India will receive negotiated outcomes with respect to generic pharmaceuticals and ingredients.
  • The United States and India commit to provide each other preferential market access in sectors of respective interest on a sustained basis.
  • The United States and India will establish rules of origin that ensure that the benefits of theAgreement accrue predominately to the United States and India.
  • The United States and India will address non-tariff barriers that affect bilateral trade. India agrees to address long-standing barriers to the trade in U.S. medical devices; eliminate restrictive import licensing procedures that delay market access for, or impose quantitative restrictions on, U.S. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) goods; and determine, with a view towards a positive outcome, within six months of entry into force of the Agreement whether U.S.-developed or international standards, including testing requirements, are acceptable for the purposes of U.S. exports entering the Indian market in identified sectors. Recognizing the importance of working together to resolve long-standing concerns, India also agrees to address long-standing non-tariff barriers to the trade in U.S. food and agricultural products.
  • For the purposes of enhancing ease of compliance with applicable technical regulations, the United States and India intend to discuss their respective standards and conformity assessment procedures for mutually agreed sectors.
  • In the event of any changes to the agreed upon tariffs of either country, the United States and India agree that the other country may modify its commitments.
  • The United States and India will work towards further expanding market access opportunities through the negotiations of the BTA. The United States affirms that it intends to take into consideration, during the negotiations of the BTA, India’s request that the United States continue to work to lower tariffs on Indian goods.
  • The United States and India agree to strengthen economic security alignment to enhance supply chain resilience and innovation through complementary actions to address non- market policies of third parties, as well as cooperation on inbound and outbound investment reviews and export controls.
  • India intends to purchase $500 billion of U.S. energy products, aircraft and aircraft parts, precious metals, technology products, and coking coal over the next 5 years. India and the United States will significantly increase trade in technology products, including Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) and other goods used in data centers, and expand joint technology cooperation.
  • The United States and India commit to address discriminatory or burdensome practices and other barriers to digital trade and to set a clear pathway to achieve robust, ambitious, and mutually beneficial digital trade rules as part of the BTA.
The United States and India will promptly implement this framework and work towards finalizing the Interim Agreement with a view to concluding a mutually beneficial BTA consistent with the roadmap agreed in the Terms of Reference BTA consistent with the roadmap agreed in the Terms of Reference.

Bangladesh just got their tariff reduced to 19% but they have been given the concession to export textiles at 0% IF they use US inputs (which they most certainly will). Not so good news for India and Pakistan.

Yes, all garmets stocks which rallied during the last couple of weeks are heavily down today.
A masterstroke by Younis. @sweep_shot

Bangladesh is heavily dependent on garments exports. I expected them to go all in to defend their territory.
India has other growth avenues. Not the case for Bangladesh.

If the business and tech companies in India can’t take advantage of the trade deals done in last 2 months, then we must be useless.

This is time to be competitive against Vietnam and create a monopoly against BD and Pak, they have long enjoyed easy access.

Bangladeshi textiles that use US cotton (and man made) have 0%, that deal works more for US to dump its stuff in BD than BD.. atleast for now

Nah there's definitely an impact. Maybe a couple of Billion dollars. Bangladesh will definitely not buy Indian cotton (they're a major buyer) now that any textiles made with US cotton get a 0% Tariff. I think India ship $500M of cotton.

Nothing too huge in the big picture but it's a smart move by the Bangladeshi negotiators. The kind of stuff countries should be doing it dealing with the US. These little wins make a big difference to the small countries.

Cotton prices fluctuate as well but if Bangladesh starts buying US cotton specifically, the price will increase assuming the Indian cotton yields well Indian textile can manage to sway a bit, tough but possible due to other factors.

Should be interesting to see how India and Bangladeshi companies manage this aspect, not to forget in EU they will go head to head from next year.

The loser is definitely Indian cotton farmers unless Textiles can figure a way out.

Also Silk India got 0% duty if im not wrong

India ‘committed’ to stop Russian oil purchase, claims US Secretary of State Marco Rubio

Trump has claimed that India had agreed to not procure crude oil from Russia. However, New Delhi is yet to give a clear answer.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that India has committed to stop buying Russian oil, days after India reiterated that “national interests” will be the “guiding factor” for India’s energy procurement

Earlier, US President Donald Trump, while announcing a trade deal with New Delhi early in February, claimed India had agreed to not procure crude oil from Russia. Since then, the US has claimed multiple times that India will stop buying oil from Russia.

Speaking at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Rubio said, “In our conversations with India, we’ve gotten their commitment to stop buying additional Russian oil.”

Separately, external affairs minister S Jaishankar said in Munich that India continues to pursue a policy of strategic autonomy and the country’s decisions on energy purchases will be made after considering availability, cost and risks.

New Delhi has neither confirmed nor denied the Trump administration’s repeated assertions that it has committed to ending Russian oil purchases as part of a trade deal with the US, which has seen Trump slash tariffs on Indian exports from 50% to 18%.

This has included the removal of a 25% punitive levy imposed on India last year over Russian oil purchases.

Jaishankar, who was participating in a discussion with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul at the Munich Security Conference, said that countries across the world are recalculating their policies amid unprecedented changes on the international stage and looking for common ground to strengthen each other.

Responding to a question on whether India having to wean itself of Russian oil under a trade deal with the US had impacted the country’s strategic autonomy, Jaishankar said New Delhi still exercises strategic autonomy which is “very deep and…cuts across the political spectrum”.

“We are very much wedded to strategic autonomy because it’s very much a part of our history and our evolution,” he said.

“Where the energy issues are concerned, this is today a complex market, oil companies in India — as in Europe, as probably in other parts of the world — look at availability, cost and risks and take the decisions that they feel is in their best interests.”
