President’s Trophy is set to begin from 16 December 2023. The first-class tournament will be played till 31 January 2024 across three venues – National Bank Stadium, UBL Sports Complex and SBP Sports Complex – in Karachi.

Seven departmental teams will play one another in a round-robin format. The tournament will comprise 22 games, which will be divided as seven rounds of league-stage matches and a five-day final between the top two teams from 27 to 31 January 2024.

The President’s Trophy marks the return of departmental cricket in the domestic structure, as was devised after the reinstitution of the PCB 2014 Constitution. The last edition of President’s Trophy was held in the 2018-19 domestic season, which was won by the State Bank of Pakistan.

Departmental cricket will provide players an extra earning opportunity, as they will get to participate in additional tournaments following the conclusion of the regions-based domestic tournament cycle, which included the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (Winners: Karachi Whites), Pakistan Cup (Winners: Peshawar) and National T20 Cup (Karachi Whites).

The seven teams participating in the tournament are as follows:

Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), Pakistan Television (PTV), State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Khan Research Laboratories (KRL), Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Ghani Glass.

The first-round fixtures are listed below:

SNGPL v Ghani Glass at National Bank Stadium

PTV v SBP at SBP Sports Complex

WAPDA v KRL at UBL Sports Complex

Nadeem Khan, Director – Domestic Cricket Operations, said: “The return of departmental cricket will benefit all the stakeholders. We are hoping that the President’s Trophy will bring even more depth and competition to our domestic circuit.

“We have added HEC and Ghani Glass to this first-class tournament on a probationary basis. We will closely monitor the performances of these two teams in this edition and make decisions about their involvement in the proceeding season based on their competitiveness at the first-class level.”

Are you happy with the revival of departmental cricket, and which team will you support in the President's Trophy 2023-24?

I am extremely happy about the revival of departmental cricket because it has produced great names for Pakistan, such as Younis Khan. It also serves as a source of income for domestic players.

How does this work? So there are 7 more seperate teams from the regions or the best players from the regions join the 7 teams in departments?

It will be in karachi which is good

No more greentops in Northern punjab in winter with trundlers inflating their stats

Hopefully kookaburra ball Is used

Just saw the squads on twitter

So why are Babar, Shaheen and Rizwan not playing this? Why are they exempt?

It’s really heart warming but at the same time the players that perform here don’t get any chance into the national side is a big pity.

Happy to see the revival of first class departmental cricket. Benefits domestic cricketers trying to make a living and domestic cricketers who need to hone their physicial, technical and mental skills via the 4-day format, particularly those around the national team setup.

Bruh, look at the dates. It runs through the Australia tour and then Pakistan are due to tour NZ for 5 T20's in January.

Players like Zaman Khan/Haris/Azam etc missed domestic FC due to WC & or CPL so this should be great to get them all involved for some matches.

This is important for Shadab, Wasim JR and Rauf

No excuses. Play these games

I am extremely happy about the revival of departmental cricket because it has produced great names for Pakistan, such as Younis Khan. It also serves as a source of income for domestic players.
The fact a player who made his FC debut in 1998 is being used to support the restoration of departmental cricket in 2023 shows the bankruptcy of this system.

When the last season of departmental cricket concluded in 2018/19, Pakistan were 7th in ICC Test rankings. In the prior FC season, the avg 1st inns total was the lowest in the world at 233. There were eight sub-100 1st inns totals while 13 of the 15 top wicket-takers were seamers, mostly military medium.

Due to the sheer volume of teams and fixtures - pitches were overused and unfit for play. For example, there was a Lahore Blues-SNGPL match ending in four sessions that included SEVEN Pakistani internationals. Another match at LCCA ground was abandoned. Neither players or organisers were held accountable. That's the system our whinging ex-pros and paid journos waxed nostalgic over.

Was the 6+6 model perfect ? No. It wasn't quite 1990s Sheffield Shield cricket. The pitches were better but still too sluggish. However the standards instantly improved. 1st inns totals returned to the international FC average. Spinners returned to the top of the wicket-taking charts.

Teams were developing their own identities with Northern opting for youth and attacking cricket while KPK were more experienced and pragmatic. We had foreign coaches like Paul Nixon and Paul Franks coming over. Coaches submitted to annual reviews and were sacked for underperformance. After years of complacency, senior players had to perform to keep their spot or face replacement by youngsters. No more easy money for little work. The coverage improved drastically with one live streamed match per round and daily bulletins from the others.

One of the few things buffoon Ramiz Raja did right as Chairman was leave FC cricket untouched. If PCB wanted to simply add two extra teams, fine. Instead these crooks rejigged the entire system rather than give it more time to evolve because of politics, spite and ego.

Karachi, 16 December 2023: The President’s Trophy Grade-I 2023-24 kicked off at three venues in Karachi. Six departmental sides locked horns on the first day of the first round. SNGPL, SBP and WAPDA hit the ground running in their respective matches as they put on strong performances. SBP’s Mohammad Abbas and WAPDA’s Iftikhar Ahmed were in sizzling form as Abbas bagged a six-wicket haul while Iftikhar registered a ton. Iftikhar’s teammate 24-year-old Mohammad Saleem also struck his maiden first-class century. The first innings were restricted to 80 overs for each team as per the tournament rules.

SNGPL vs Ghani Glass at National Bank Stadium, Karachi

After winning the toss, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) managed a total of 371-7 in the stipulated 80 overs in the first innings as the top four batters returned with half-centuries. Opening batters, Abid Ali (90, 163b, 13x4s) and Sahibzada Farhan (67, 70b, 9x4s, 1x6) put on an opening partnership of 125 runs. Omair Bin Yousuf (56, 83b, 5x4s, 1x6) and Asad Shafiq (81, 85b, 9x4s, 1x6) kept the scoreboard ticking.

Leg-spinner Mohammad Rameez Jnr bagged six wickets for 130 runs in his 24 overs. Ahad Malik was the other successful bowler for Ghani Glass as he struck once to remove Bilawal Bhatti.

Ghani Glass will begin the second day with opening batters Farhan Sarfraz and Shahbaz Javed on the crease having faced three overs, without scoring any runs, before the close of play on day one.

PTV vs State Bank of Pakistan at SBP Sports Complex, Karachi

At the SBP Sports Complex, Pakistan Television (PTV) were bundled out for a paltry 66 in the first session with just two batters managing to get into double figures. Mohammad Abbas wreaked havoc on his way to his 44th five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. He returned with figures 6-19.

His fellow fast bowlers, Sameen Gul and Mohammad Ilyas, played the supporting roles; Sameen picked up three and Ilyas took one scalp. In reply, SBP notched 201 runs for one wicket till the close of play. 32-year-old Zain Abbas (109 not out, 154b, 13x4s, 3x6s) struck his 10th first-class hundred. Veteran batter Umar Amin chipped in with an unbeaten 64 as the duo stitched a 159-run unbeaten partnership. SBP will start day two proceedings with 34 overs left in their first innings and nine wickets in the bag. Jahandad Khan managed the solitary SBPwicket.

KRL vs WAPDA at UBL Sports Complex, Karachi

Khan Research Laboratories’ (KRL) decision to bat first backfired as WAPDA batters put up a huge first innings total. KRL bowlers struggled to stop the run flow after Mohammad Imran struck early. 13th first-class ton for Iftikhar Ahmed (155, 180b, 15x4s, 4x6s) and maiden first-class ton for Mohammad Saleem meant (117, 221b, 12x4s) that WAPDA notched 322-6 in the allotted 80 overs. Imran bagged three wickets in total while Kashif Ali, Mohammad Amir Khan and Shayan Sheikh managed one each.

KRL will start day two at 23-0 as opening batters Abdul Faseeh (12 not out, 22b, 2x4s) and Imran Dogar (10 not out, 27b, 1x4) cautiously saw off the eight overs at close of play on day one.

Scores in brief:

SNGPL won the toss and elected to bat first against Ghani Glass at National Bank Stadium, Karachi

SNGPL 371-7, 80 overs (Abid Ali 90, Asad Shafiq 81, Sahibzada Farhan 67, Omair Bin Yousuf 56; Mohammad Rameez Jnr 6-130, Ahad Malik 1-52)

Ghani Glass 0-0, 3 overs

PTV won the toss and elected to bat first against SBP at SBP Sports Complex, Karachi

PTV 66 all out, 26.2 overs (Uzair Mumtaz 21, Hamayun Altaf 11; Mohammad Abbas 6-19, Sameen Gul 3-18, Mohammad Ilyas 1-27)

SBP 201-1, 46 overs (Zain Abbas 109 not out, Umar Amin 64 not out,; Jahandad Khan 1-47)

KRL won the toss and elected to bowl first against WAPDA at UBL Sports Complex, Karachi

WAPDA 322-6, 80 overs (Iftikhar Ahmed 155, Mohammad Saleem 117; Mohammad Imran 3-75, Kashif Ali 1-45, Mohammad Amir Khan 1-61, Shayan Sheikh 1-78)

KRL 23-0, 8 overs (Abdul Fasih 12 not out, Imran Dogar 10 not out)

Featuring playing conditions that appear unconventional for first-class cricket. Both teams are limited to 80 overs in the first innings, and if the batting side declares before reaching the 80-over mark, the bowling side earns bonus points.

The innings are being restricted to 80 overs... just when you think Pakistan domestic setup can't get dumber, PCB finds new ways to do it. It's similar to the self imposed 45 overs for List A which made zero sense either.

Batters never get the chance to bat for really an extended period of time with this rule and bowlers don't have to work too hard or bowl for an extended period of time to really prove their endurance & fitness. You look at the day's play and no fast bowler is even hitting the 20 over mark for the day.

It's just another step to further devalue FC matches and they are simply matches where you just earn a pay cheque because it doesn't matter.

Bringing back Departmental cricket in Pakistan will indeed help Pakistan play better red ball cricket in some way. I understand that the infrastructure is quite limited, but it will still be beneficial.

Am I imagining this but is the owner of one the teams playing and captaining in a FC tournament. Ghani Glass has a a guy called Moeez Ghani and bowled 2 overs

Well put … POTW stuff !

great to see department cricket back.

And some very good teams.

Misbah is coaching SNGPL, its always interesting to see the players that Misbah scouts.

Sahibzada Farhan, Mubasir, Mehran, Dhani and Mohammad Ali are being backed by Misbah. Some players that should be watched out for.

Btw, which team shadab playing for?

I cannot wait to support my childhood team Higher Education Commission.
While i get you are being sarcastic, but the HEC team is the one look out for.

Basically, we have university cricket tournaments, and the best players make up the HEC team. Unless they added other players in the squad, the HEC team is going to be a pure university students team.

I wonder if some cricketer uneartherns from this team.

But these are the same guts that played in the 1st eleven under the IK system. So what does this bring to PK FC system that the PCB cant do.

Who will be the champions of the President? Lovely tournament

There's only two decent teams - SNGPL and SBP.

Just like the old system, a couple of departments hoover up the best players while the others are barely FC standard.

How PCB and defenders of this setup think this is adequate preparation for international cricket I don't know.

So they desperate were to undo IKs system, the losers never cared if there was going to be any improvement. Which sums up there attitude towards PK in general

Another exciting day of red-ball cricket unfolded in the President’s Trophy at the three venues. SNGPL, SBP and WAPDA found themselves in the driving seat towards the close of play on the second day of the first round. Half-centuries from exciting batters Mohammad Irfan Khan, Tayyab Tahir, Hasan Nawaz and Ali Zaryab were the highlights of the day. Mehran Mumtaz also made his presence felt with a crucial three-wicket haul.

SNGPL vs Ghani Glass at National Bank Stadium, Karachi

Sui Northern Gas Pipelines (SNGPL), who posted 371-7 in their first innings, lead by 137 at the end of the second day’s play as Ghani Glass only managed 253 in their first innings. Abid Ali (4 not out, 16b) and Sahibzada Farhan (15, 20b, 2x4s) will be on the crease for SNGPL at the start of day three with a total of 19 runs on board in the second innings.

Earlier in the day, Ghani Glass lost two early wickets before Shahbaz Javed (74, 125b, 10x4s) and Tayyab Tahir (75, 126b, 6x4s, 1x6) brought stability to their innings with valuable half-centuries, stitching third wicket partnership of 121 runs. Left-arm spinner Mehran Mumtaz removed Tayyab and Shahbaz to bring SNGPL back in the game, having earlier dismissed Kashif Ali (21, 35b, 4x4s) as well.

Ghani Glass lost their last seven scalps for a mere 69 runs. Pacers Mohammad Ali, Shahnawaz Dahani, and Bilawal Bhatti picked two wickets apiece while Mehran Mumtaz returned with a three-wicket haul. Asad Shafiq also picked up a solitary wicket.

PTV vs State Bank of Pakistan at SBP Sports Complex, Karachi

State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) ended up with a mammoth lead of 292 after their first innings on day two. At the start of the second day’s play, SBP added 157 runs to their overnight total of 201-1 for the loss of six wickets in the allotted 80 overs. Along with Zain Abbas’ ton (126, 177b, 16x4s, 3x6s), Umar Amin (70, 126b, 7x4s) and Mohammad Irfan Khan’s (82 not out, 81b, 7x4s, 2x6s) vital half-centuries ensured a big first innings total for SBP. PTV’s Mohammad Sadaqat bagged three wickets while Jahandad Khan and Adil Naz returned with two and one wicket respectively.

Pakistan Television (PTV) started their second innings with a fine opening partnership of 56 runs before Kashif Bhatti dismissed skipper Uzair Mumtaz (23, 48b, 5x4s). The other opening batter Hasan Nawaz continued with his belligerent batting as he raced to 83 from 76 balls laced with seven boundaries and four sixes, taking PTV to 168-5 by close of play.

SBP bowlers managed a grip on the game with Hassan’s departure and bagged three quick wickets afterwards. Mohammad Abbas picked up three wickets including the valuable scalp of PTV’s top scorer Hasan while Mohammad Ilyas and Kashif Bhatti chipped in with one wicket each. PTV will start day three trailing by 124 runs with five wickets in hand and Taimur Khan (10 not out, 20b, 1x4, 1x6) and Hasan Mohsin (28 not out, 36b, 4x4s, 1x6) on the crease.

KRL vs WAPDA at UBL Sports Complex, Karachi

At the close of play on day two, Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) led by 88 in their second innings. Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) began the second day’s proceedings with their overnight score of 23-0 as the opening partnership between Abdul Faseeh (38, 47b, 7x4) and Imran Dogar (20, 61b, 3x4s) stretched to 62 runs. Half-centuries by Ali Zaryab (71, 107b, 7x4s, 1x6) and Maaz Sadaqat (52 not out, 121b, 2x4s, 1x6) meant that KRL finished with 274-8 in their allotted 80 overs. Asif Afridi picked up four wickets while Naqeeb Masood struck thrice. Tahir Hussain had a solitary wicket to his name as well.

WAPDA lost two wickets at the score of naught at the start of their second innings as Mohammad Imran removed Hassan Abid Kiyani and Mohammad Saad for ducks. Umar Akmal (32 not out, 45b, 6x4s) and first innings’ centurion Mohammad Saleem (7 not out, 42b) saw off the last critical hour of the day for WAPDA as the lead swelled to 88, with the scorecard reading 40-2 in 16 overs.

State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) bagged their first win as they beat Pakistan Television (PTV) while the games at National Bank Stadium and UBL Sports Complex will go into day four with SNGPL and KRL in a dominant position at the respective venues. Mohammad Abbas had a memorable day as he completed his 12th ten-wicket haul in first-class cricket.

SNGPL vs Ghani Glass at National Bank Stadium, Karachi

Ghani Glass require 370 to win on day four as they closed the third day of the game with 38 on the board for the loss of two wickets as Mohammad Ali struck early to remove the opening batters Farhan Sarfaraz and Shahbaz Javed for ducks. Kashif Ali (20, 59b, 3x4s) and Tayyab Tahir (14, 30b, 2x4s) saw off the tough last hour.

Earlier, Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) extended their overnight lead of 137 to a massive total of 408. SNGPL lost four quick wickets in the first session as Ghani Glass bowlers reduced them to 56-4. Azhar Ali (109, 144b, 11x4s, 2x6s) and Haseebullah (102 not out, 135b, 6x4s, 1x6) put on a commanding partnership of 191 to take the team out of trouble. They declared the innings at 290-7 with 17 overs left in the day.

Poor cricket by SNGPL. THey should had defeated Ghani Glass

Dhani seems to be crap in first class.

Umar Akmal looked very poor and ordinary in the National T-20 Cup, so much so that his own domestic team dropped him in the end in a competition where the standard and quality was extremely poor. The fact he is now scoring runs tells you the department competition standard is even worse.

Am I missing something? Why are first innings only limited to 80 overs?

These people running PCB are a complete joke these days.

They are thinking this will force teams to score quickly and for all games to be result oriented.

178 (210) for 23-year-old Awaiz Zafar. Does anyone know anything about this guy? From Cricinfo, what I can see is:

-He is 23 years old
-He played for Pak U-19
-Before this game, he had played 2 FC matches. He has made 8 runs and averages 2.
-He has opened, batted at 3 and made this wild knock batting at 4. So already, is batting all over the place.

On the third day of second round of the President’s Trophy Grade-I, Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines (SNGPL) won their games as they beat Ghani Glass and Pakistan Television (PTV) respectively. KRL’s one-wicket victory over Ghani Glass became the highlight of this round. The game between Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) will go into day four after a hard fought day three. SNGPL’s Arif Yaqoob had a memorable day as he raced to his maiden first-class ten wicket haul in a match winning performance against PTV.

HEC vs WAPDA at National Bank Stadium, Karachi

Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) require 106 runs to win with six wickets in hand as they closed day three with 114-4 on the board, while in pursuit of 220. WAPDA had an unexpected start to their chase as both opening batters, Mohammad Saleem and Hassan Abid Kiyani, were dismissed for one run each with scorecard reading 2-2. Umar Akmal (61 not out, 138b, 6x4s) played a crafty knock while keeping one end secure. Higher Education Commission (HEC) managed two more wickets from the other end as experienced duo of Iftikhar Ahmed (20, 63b) and Mohammad Saad (15, 47b, 3x4s) departed for low scores. Ayaz Tasawar (8 not out, 16b, 1x4) will be on the crease to start the proceedings on day four with Umar as WAPDA will look to chase the target.

Earlier, HEC managed to add 172 runs in their overnight total of 111-2, on day three, getting bundled out for 283.

Batting at number seven, wicketkeeper batter, Ghazi Ghouri (110, 118b, 17x4s) struck a brilliant century to help his team post a respectable target. He was aided by Mohammad Mohsin Khan (60, 87b, 9x4s) who managed to score a halfcentury. WAPDA’s skipper Iftikhar led from front and picked up three wickets. Irfanullah Shah also returned with three scalps while Naqeeb Masood and Asif Afridi bagged two each.

KRL vs Ghani Glass at State Bank Stadium, Karachi

Khan Research laboratories (KRL) sealed a memorable victory against Ghani Glass as they won by just one wicket while chasing 123 in the dying moments of the day three. KRL’s pursuit of 123 had faltered at the start when they were reduced to 67-6. Their last four batters, Kashif Ali (30 not out, 40b, 2x4s, 1x6), Shayan Sheikh (9, 11b, 1x4), Sirajuddin (5, 14b) and Arshadullah (8 not out, 25b, 1x4) faced a combined total of 100 balls and added 52 vital runs to the total.

Kashif Alitop scored for the while batting at number eight. He spent crucial time in the middle making sure his team ekes out the win while wickets fell on the other end at regular intervals. Ghulam Mudassar and Niaz Khan’s four wicket-hauls went in vain as the Ghani Glass bowling attack failed to pick up the last wicket.

Earlier in the day, Ghani Glass started their second innings with a lead of 43 but they were soon bundled out for a paltry 79 in 26.2 overs. Kashif Ali and Sirajuddin picked up four wickets each while Arshadullah played the supporting role with two wickets.
