The second round of President’s Trophy Grade-I came to an end as Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) secured the game against Higher Education Commission (HEC) with a four-wicket win on day four. Umar Akmal scored back-to-back fifties in the game to inspire his team to second win of the tournament. Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) and Sui Northern Gas Pipelines (SNGPL) had won their respective games the previous day.

WAPDA continued from their overnight score of 114-4. They lost two more wickets while chasing the 220-run target. Umar Akmal (85, 203b, 10x4s) and Ayaz Tasawar (65, 125b, 10x4s) stretched their fifth-wicket partnership to 98 before the former fell to Aqib Liaqat. Bismillah Khan (17 not out, 22b, 2x4s, 1x6) hit the winning runs as WAPDA got home with two sessions remaining and four wickets in the bag.

HEC’s Mohammad Junaid picked up three wickets to keep his team in the game but it went in vain. Aqib Liaqat also bagged two wickets while Mohammad Azab’s lone wicket came on day three.

At the end of second round, WAPDA skipper Iftikhar Ahmed is leading the batting chart with 386 runs while his fellow teammate Asif Afridi sits on top of leading wicket taker’s list having taken 11 wickets.

The third round of President’s Trophy 2023-24 kicked off at three venues in Karachi. Shahnawaz Dahani registered his best bowling figures in first-class cricket and also made headlines with a brilliant hat-trick on his way to a six-wicket haul. Abdul Faseeh and Saad Nasim also struck centuries to take their respective teams to dominant positions.

Ghani Glass vs PTV at National Bank Stadium, Karachi

Ghani Glass found themselves in the driving seat on day one as they posted 319 for the loss of nine wickets in the allotted 80 overs. In reply, Pakistan Television (PTV) lost two wickets in just 1.5 overs without a single run on the board. Shoaib Akhtar removed Hasan Nawaz and Mohammad Junaid for ducks before stumps were drawn.

PTV opted to bowl first and reduced Ghani Glass to 48-4 in the first session. Later in the day, the tide turned in favour of Ghani Glass as Saad Nasim (150, 198b, 21x4s, 1x6) took the team out of the trouble on the way to his 10th first-class hundred. Skipper Hussain Talat (49, 66b, 7x4s, 1x6) and Shahbaz Javed (45, 78b, 6x4s) contributed with vital runs as well. Sharoon Siraj (64, 74b, 4x4s, 3x6s) and Waqar Ahmed (60, 79b, 12x4s, 1x6) chipped in with valuable half-centuries. Maaz Sadaqat (46, 45b, 3x4s, 1x6) helped KRL breach the 400-run mark. Mohammad Azab bagged three wickets while Waseem Akram, Aarish Ali Khan and Mohammad Junaid picked up one apiece.

Higher Education commission (HEC) closed the day with 41-1 as Arshadullah dismissed Jahanzaib Sultan (4, 5b, 1x4) early on. Saad Khan (21 not out, 25b, 3x4s) and Mohammad Huraira (14 not out, 19b, 2x4s) saw off the day as HEC trailed by 370 runs.

SNGPL vs SBP at State Bank Stadium, Karachi

State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) bowlers, Mohammad Ilyas and Sameen Gul, struck regular blows with the new ball to leave Sui Northern Gas Pipelines 48-4 after being dismissed for 170 earlier in the day.

Initially, SNGPL’s decision to bowl first paid dividends as they bundled out SBP for a modest total in 59.1 overs. Shahnawaz Dahani took a career-best haul of 6-40 in a fiery spell that included a hat-trick as well. Umar Amin (48, 97b, 4x4s) top-scored while Zain Abbas (36, 84b, 4x4s) and Muhammad Irfan Khan (32, 66b, 4x4s) departed after showcasing some resistance. HEC's Awais Zafar hits another ton while SNGPL and Ghani Glass showcase dominance

In the second day’s play of the third round of President’s Trophy 2023-24, Pakistan Television (PTV) were enforced to follow-on while HEC’s Awais Zafar registered his second ton of the tournament. Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) were in the driver’s seat, courtesy of Mubasir Khan’s unbeaten half-century, against SBP at State Bank Stadium.

Ghani Glass vs PTV at National Bank Stadium, Karachi

Pakistan Television (PTV) were asked to follow-on after they were bundled out for 128 in reply to Ghani Glass’ 319. Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Rameez Jnr combined to dismiss eight batters as both of them returned with four wickets each.

Taimur Khan (50, 63b, 6x4s, 2x6s) and Mohammad Suleman (28, 55b, 2x4s) stitched a 75-run sixth-wicket partnership but it was not enough to avoid the follow-on. PTV only managed to add 43 more runs before they ran out of batters.

PTV put up a strong reply the second time round, bringing the deficit down to just eight at the close of play on day two. They lost their opening batters, Nasir Nawaz (24, 35b, 5x4s) and Hasan Nawaz (13, 11b, 3x4s) for a total of 45 runs on the board. Taimur Khan (79 not out, 99b, 13x4s, 1x6) and Mohammad Suleman (65, 118b, 6x4s) then put on an unbeaten 138-run partnership.

Shoaib and Rameez Jnr picked up a wicket each while other Ghani Glass bowlers struggled to get a breakthrough.

KRL vs HEC at UBL Sports Complex, Karachi

Higher Education Commission (HEC) batters shone on day two as they raced to 379-8 in reply to Khan Research Laboratories’ (KRL) mammoth total of 411-7. Awais Zafar (111, 172b, 10x4s, 1x6), who scored his maiden first-class ton in the previous round, once again was among the runs as he struck a magnificent century to help his team challenge the KRL bowlers.

Saad Khan (67, 98b, 10x4s), Ghazi Ghouri (56, 50b, 6x4s) and Adeel Meo (51, 57b, 5x4s, 1x6) struck valuable half-centuries as HEC trailed by 32 by the end of their allotted 80 overs. Arshadullah was the pick of the KRL bowlers as he dismissed four batters. All other bowlers managed to bag one wicket each.

KRL started their second innings with caution as the opening partnership yielded 43 runs. By the time stumps were drawn on day two, they had lost two wickets with 81 runs on the board. KRL will start day three with a crucial lead of 113 and first-innings centurion, Abdul Faseeh (32 not out, 38b, 3x4s, 1x6) on the crease. HEC’s Waseem Akram and Jahanzaib Sultan bagged a wicket each.

SNGPL vs SBP at State Bank Stadium, Karachi

Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) avoided their overnight collapse scare as they managed 305-8 in the 80 overs from a precarious position of 48-4 at the start of second day’s play. Skipper Asad Shafiq (77, 140b, 7x4s) and Bilawal Bhatti (54, 113b, 6x4s) played their part in the rebuild as they stitched a 89-run fifth-wicket partnership.

Coming in to bat at number seven, Mubasir Khan (84 not out, 114b, 8x4s, 4x6s) took it upon himself to help SNGPL extend their first-innings lead to 135. SBP’s Mohammad Ilyas ended up with four wickets to his name while Sameen Gul and Kashif Bhatti chipped in with two wickets each.

With a challenging first-innings deficit, SBP found themselves in trouble at the start of their second innings as opening batter Zain Abbas departed for a duck, courtesy Mohammad Ali, soon followed by Umar Amin (10, 20b, 2x4s) with the scorecard reading 16-2. Captain Usman Salahuddin (25 not out, 37b, 3x4s) and Rameez Aziz (22 not out, 50b, 2x4s) saw off the remainder of the day as SBP trail by 76 runs.

Uhh so where is Mohammad Haris & Azam Khan in this tourney? WK like Adnan Akmal, Ali Shan, Taimur Khan etc are playing but can't find spots for the few & rare talented WK Pakistan have in their system.

Haris being unfairly dropped from T20 squad too. Truly a pathetic and unfair system Pakistan have.

Azam khan is bound for the NZ series so he is rightfully not playing this president's trophy anymore but yes, Mohammad Haris should play this format now as he has been rested from the t20s. He can play this format and improve his skills.

Ifit, Farhan & Haseebullah are all playing though. Haris/Azam etc should be playing as much FC as possible.

Bring me to another name, Abbas Afridi is also not playing. Options for pace all-rounder in Tests are virtually non-existent and Afridi still can't find a place to play for?

Day three of the third round in President’s Trophy Grade I 2023-24 saw Ghani Glass inching close to victory despite Pakistan Television’s (PTV) top effort with the bat in the second innings. Meanwhile, the game between Khan Research laboratories (KRL) and Higher Education Commission (HEC) is set up nicely for an exciting finish on the last day. State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) put a fight against a strong Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL).

Ghani Glass vs PTV at National Bank Stadium, Karachi

Ghani Glass require 95 runs to win with nine wickets in the bag as PTV’s spirited second-innings effort yielded valuable runs. Continuing from their overnight score of 183-2, the PTV duo of Taimur Khan (160, 200b, 27x4s, 2x6s) and Mohammad Suleman (106, 196b, 10x4s, 1x6) went onto score valiant hundreds. Both batters shared a third-wicket partnership of 263 runs, helping PTV obtain a lead of 218 runs.

In pursuit of the target, Ghani Glass got off to a solid start as their opening batters, Sharjeel Khan (74 not out, 92b, 8x4s, 2x6s) and Mohsin Riaz (28, 51b, 4x4s, 1x6) notched a 100-run partnership. Mohsin was removed by Mohammad Sadaqat while Sharjeel was joined by Tayyab Tahir (17 not out, 39b, 2x4s) as the pair saw off the day with a total of 124-1 on the board.

KRL vs HEC at UBL Sports Complex, Karachi

KRL set a target of 434 for Higher Education Commission (HEC) after stretching their overnight lead of 113 runs. Who's this talent Moeez Ghani in the Ghani Glass team?
Going back to the Moeez Ghani situation - just found out Salman Butt is the director of cricket for Ghani Glass.

No surprises that the posterboy for corruption in Pakistan cricket was responsible for this.

That would totally add up. The PCB are a terrible organisation and Butt is as corrupt as they come

Maybe. But a more plausible explanation could be that the owner of the team demanded this.

Teams are not made based on what the owner of that team demands. Teams should be made purely on talent and performance. If moeez performs and deserves a chance then all is good else he should be sitting on the bench and serving water. President's trophy is not some club cricket where you can demand anything, it a Pakistan's domestic tournament, everybody should take is serious.
