"Priyanka Gandhi Vadra -- the youngest member of India's Nehru-Gandhi political dynasty -- took on a formal leadership role in the main opposition Congress Party Wednesday, injecting a burst of enthusiasm among its ranks as the country gears up for general elections. ..."

Read this today in the CNN Asia section - https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/23/asia/india-priyanka-vadra-congress-intl/index.html

To the India based PPers: Why is one of the biggest political parties in your nation so dependent on ONE family dare I say to a slavish extent? I know us Americans are no angels either with the Bush-es, Clintons and Kennedys and I'm also aware that Pakistan/Sri Lanka/Bangladesh have their fair share as well. Still ... ONE family dominating the country's politics for all of the 70+ years since independence seems very extreme.

Why this subservience to the Nehru-Gandhi clan? Voter apathy? Voter illiteracy? Or is that family just a facade and the actual cabal of puppeteers a group of nameless faceless corporate+political bigwigs? Lack of a historical better choice within Congress party for all of these years (this does not seem believable though)?

Recently also read somewhere that this family actually usurped the Gandhi name and it is not their original family name - conspiracy theory or a huge brand theft, I'm not sure.

Congress is trying to get back on its feet and BJP leaders have done a great job by making stupid statements which dented their vote bank.

Rahul Gandhi is a decent face that Congress can project. But Priyanka Gandhi is very marketable. She looks very similar to Indira Gandhi (including the hair cut) will help the party garner more votes. Many old timers still like Indira. Anything that helps is great.

I have a feeling, once the elections are over, If Congress wins, Prinyanka will get a portfolio. Otherwise, she will disappear with her crooked husband for a few more years.

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra sounds like Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Family name must go on to fool voters. :))

I thought Indian democracy had evolved beyond dynastic politics :facepalm:

I thought Indian democracy had evolved beyond dynastic politics :facepalm:

Congress = Dynasty politics
BJP = Cannot separate themselves from Sangh Parivar.
Rest of them = Jokers.

Have to choose one among them.

Motilal Nehru - became President of the Congress party 100 years ago;
Jawaharlal Nehru - PM;
Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit MP, Governor of Maharashtra, UN diplomat;
Indira Gandhi - PM;
Sanjay Gandhi - MP and his mother's right hand man;
Rajiv Gandhi - PM;
Sonia Gandhi - President of the Congress Party and defacto PM;
Rahul Gandhi - MP, President of the Congress Party, and PM candidate;
Priyanka Gandhi - Congress General Secretary.

Priyanka Gandhi's kids are still only teenagers so India will have to wait a while before the 6th generation enters politics.
