Project 'Fortress Pakistan' is the need of the hour!

Pakistan's current state of affairs can be traced back to the whitewash at the hands of SL in the UAE when they slipped to 7th in the rankings. The reason they were consistently ranked higher in the 2010-17 period was because of their unbeaten record in the erstwhile fortress UAE.

It's time to build a strong fortress in Pakistan first and Misbah/Waqar should be looking to win e very test at home first to ensure that Pakistan stay competitive and then make adjustments to try and be competitive as possible in England/southern hemisphere. Victory should start at home and should begin with a ruthless whitewash of the weakest Saffer side in history .

Please discuss.
 
Lol, we just got whitewashed in NZ for the second time in a row. NZ now have beaten us in the past 3 series. Since 2014, we have have been NZ's bunnies, and you come up with this thread ?
 
Pakistan used to be the toughest place to tour for visiting teams till 1995. After that though many teams won in Pak, even though Pak still has the best W/L ratio at home of all teams. I am not sure, if the current team is equipped well enough to create a fortress at home.

Yes. That's what I am getting at. Great teams have built their success on home dominance, first and foremost. Pakistan have not been ranked higher than #6 in the test rankings since 2017 ever since they lost their first series in the UAE. They have to absolutely pummel.teams at home first . A whitewash of the Saffers and Pakistan can go as high as #5

What use are the rankings, when you can't win away from home? Pakistan was ranked consistently in the top 4 from 2012-2017 but even in that period they drew with Zimbabwe in 2013,lol
 
Like England, Pakistan weren't the greatest team at home. Between 2000 - 2009, they lost series to England, India, Sri Lanka and South Africa there.

They liked the UAE more, at least under Misbah/Ajmal but even that turned on them when they started to lose tests to West Indies and series to New Zealand and Sri Lanka.

Let's see what they do back on home soil now.

The point is that Pakistan needs to get back to solid winning ways at home before even thinking of playing/winning in SENA. Misbah's strength was UAE domination and he can bring that about atleast. If Saggers win even 1 test, Misbah should be fired.

I think this is or was my hope from Misbah and that was my biggest concern of MA
Under him we lost our fortress


Bit to build a fortress
We need to forget overseas for 3-4 years and just focus on home that no one can touch us in home

And that's where I want to see the SA tour because it'll be the first non-team in Pakistan and I want to see what kind of pitches and bowlers Pakistan would go with

It'll be an interesting tour for sure
 
Pakistan will continue to do well in Pakistan. Have no doubts about that. I just wish we continue to conduct the competitive A tours to pick and groom the potential players who can do well when we tour. The likes of Abid Ali, Fawad, Haris will be world beaters back in Pakistan.

Pakistan is a much harder place to defend against non asian teams for PCT

Cause good batting always yield rewards unlike what happens in UAE
Also pitches aren't that good for bowling (from our domestic season)
 
They should do this if they want to win. They need a dust bowl track, as Pakistan does not have any good pace bowlers right now. By doing this they can beat the SENA teams at home.

I hope you're kidding. Please say so. Naseem, Haris, Hasnain and everyone else will thrive with the old ball. With their pace, I fully expect them to extract good reverse swing. We don't have spinners who can run through sides yet. So rank turners are a big no. Flat dry pitches are the way to go. Our pacers will get wickets with sheer pace.

I would give zafar gohar another chance. Him and Yasir for the two test matches aganst South Africa.

Sajid Khan was the lead wicket taker in the recent QEA tournament, so i would put him in the team as a back up.

Exactly. Zafar is a good addition and left arm spinners are always a threat on dry surfaces. We need to field Shaheen - Yasir - Zafar in every match. Depending on fitness, 1 out of Naseem/Hasnain/Haris need to be fielded. Shadab can be the allrounder for our conditions.

I wouldn't be so sure, this team is deeply mediocre. We can very well lose the series against SA. Pakistan, if they start losing at home as well, they will become the next West Indies.

None of them played even a full season of first class cricket

Than why should we put them there
they don't deserve that opportunity!

And I thaught after Naseem Shah we realized the importance of experience

I would much rather put Hasan Ali or hell even Waqas Maqsood

Nope afraid not.

My expectations of our pacers is very low.

And Haris has 3 first class matches, and Hasnain has two. They should prove themselves in domestic before being selected. And the less said about Naseem the better.

This team is struggling in overseas conditions, granted. However, I expect them to do well in Pakistan. Also, do you believe this NZ team will do well if they play in Pakistan? Bowlers like Jamieson, Southee would be rendered useless. Similarly, our conditions will definitely suit our strenghts.

Pakistan has been a poor side in Pakistan post 1995. We lost a home series to Zimbabwe of all teams in 1998. If Zim can win in Pakistan, NZL surely can:inti
 
So yes its true and maybe folks are beginning to see that under Misbah's coaching this new look team will be very competitive (possibly even dominant) in home conditions. And I agree with everyone that we need to build a future team that is competitive everywhere, not just in home conditions. Having said all that, if we had just held on to some of our catches, we would have been extremely competitive in this series even with the lalloos we have in this team. Blows your mind a little...
 
Need to sack misbah first....sack Waqar 2nd....3rd hire good fitness expert and fielding coaches.....I said coaches because fielding must be improved from school level or grassroot level.....

Pathetic fielding leads to poor bowling efforts....poor morale of team and u know what happens when u give the best batsman of the world 3 4 lifelines...
 
Mediocre teams like Pakistan shouldn't be obsessing over winning away. We don't have the personnel or tactical awareness to beat top teams in their backyard.

Instead our limited resources and focus should be channelled into winning home series. However the lack of home Tests and endless deluge of T20Is means our Test side will struggle to improve.

Good point. I for one, would love to see us become dominant at home. Performances away are unlikely to change anytime soon.

Doesn't seem like we will become dominant at home. What seems more likely is that we will lose home series and get destroyed, whenever we tour outside Asia. I am afraid Pakistan have become the new West Indies who are poor at home and atrocious away:inti

It's not just about mediocre teams. Look at India and NZ. We built our No.1 rankings by whitewashing just about everyone at home over at least 4 years. Winning away is harder than ever and Pakistan would do well to thrash teams like SA and England at home. That will give your youngsters confidence at this level.

I think what we must realise is is the lack of test cricket played brother and the fact is the big guns like India take that slice of the cake as let's be honest they bring in the most money into ICC. Pakistan need to consider changes for this next series but don't go full on with your changes look to make 3 changes which are clearly evident from this series.

Drop Shan for Imran Butt
Drop Haris for Babar (subject to recovery else Saud Shakeel/Kamran Ghulam)
Drop Naseem Shah for Hassan Ali/Tabish Khan/Taj Wali
Rest Yasir Shah for Zahid Mehmood (optional)

I repeat don't go change happy!!!!!!!!!!
 
Pak needs to build the fortress from the scratch, one brick at a time, there is no other go. The castle has been demolished too many times in recent times to be considered for a revamp.

I completely agree. At home, we need to create an environment which is used to winning, so that we can maximize our players at home to give them the required experience to solidify their roles in the test team. Being in a team in conditions you know allows you to establish yourself, which is what we need a lot of our players to do. We need our bowlers to figure out the lines and lengths to bowl on dead wickets, so that they can get even better performances when they tour overseas where conditions help bowlers. Our batsmen need to get set into a structure and everyone needs to get glued into their role on the team. We need to play as many games at home as we can to outline any potential weaknesses of our team, because at home, you can fall back on a supportive pitch to bail you out of mistakes, something you can't do overseas.

Moreover, it is the perfect time to actually use experienced players like Azhar Ali and Yasir Shah, the only two I'd keep around the team, to help youngsters get molded into their spots. If we can get the likes of Kamran Ghulam, Saud Shakeel, and whichever other youngsters we introduce into the team get settled, it will help us make better decisions in the future and find replacements for the players who will retire soon. Basically, I mean that we should have Azhar Ali's presence near a young batsman so that he can guide them and so that they can learn a few things batting alongside him to replicate his use to the team when he retires. The same is the case with Yasir, who could offer a lot of experience to our spinners. We have no experienced quick for our team to gather around, which is why our fast bowling is so poor.

We need to bring back in some good fast bowlers to help create a positive climate in our bowling. What we need to create is a fast bowling pack, every nation has one except us. We need our young bowling lineup to quickly gain experience and work together as a unit. We need to use statistical data to improve on our weaknesses, and identify weaknesses of other teams. We need to be brave as a team, and contribute in any way possible to get wickets. Our fielding must improve as well.

These are just some of the things I have noticed, but creating a fortress at home is the stepping stone for becoming a better team.

True. Pakistan have to press home advantage and crush teams at home. The thing is, players will become confident of performing away once they do well at home.

Exactly.

On the back of series wins against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, we went to England and competed very well with them in the first test match.
 
Good thread. I fully agree that Pakistan should start winning at home, now that teams are starting to tour Pakistan. Forget winning abroad for a while (except England maybe, because Pakistan have always done well in England) and create a culture of confidence in the dressing room when they're playing at home. OP is right, every other team in the world is doing the same. If you play 50% of all test matches at home, then just winning the matches you play at home (50% of all matches you play) will get your win ratio to 0.5, which is not bad at all.

Prepare the right pitches, get the players who will thrive in those pitches, and devise a strategy for winning, just like Misbah created one in UAE.
 
I do not agree. I do not want us to become a dustbowl team. I hate that idea. It was winning in the UAE that set us so far back from winning away from Asia.

We relied on spinners and didn’t develop any fast bowling resources from 2010 onwards. Our batsmen became too comfortable in UAE conditions and could do little away.

I’d take some losses at home if it means we become a better team away

That "dustbowl team" won a series in NZ in 2011, drew 2-2 with England in 2016, and beat WIN 2-1 in 2017 and drew 1-1 with WIN in 2011. All wins outside of Asia.

On a serious note Pakistan's record outside Asia from 2010-2021 isn't bad at all. The have won 12 tests outside Asia in this period.

I'd like us to be home track bullies and sneak the occasional win and/or draw outside of Asia here and there. That's good enough and the maximum we can expect with our resources.

Goal now is to beat SA 2-0, win those series vs England, Aus and NZ next year. Try not to lose any tests, draw here and there is fine.

Try to win away in Ban, Zim and SL. Against Windies away we should try to at least draw the series and win a test at least. If we do that we will have built a solid team.

Yeah, we should look to become a solid team at home first. We can always win matches in England, West Indies etc. away from Asia. From 2010 onwards, Pakistan have won 5 tests in England alone and 3 tests in West Indies. We should look to replicate these away performances while remaining unbeaten at home like we were unbeaten in UAE from 2010-2017.
 
I think this is the right approach. We don't have the players to win away, but we can build a base at home with some decent planning. I want to see us beat teams at home like we did under Misbah in UAE.

Sorry if I sound ignorant, but pakistan has lost two or three series to sri lanka, 1 to zimbabwe of all teams and plenty more vs other top teams like south africa, australia, maybe new Zealand too all at home and uae. We were lucky vs india wasn't playing us.

Wish we had a record like india at home at least they're dominant at home now excellent away too. We're bad everywhere sadly 😔

You’ll be presently surprised if we take a look into the averages of the Pakistan batsmen at Karachi National Stadium (1st Test), you’ll be pleasantly surprised. I felt bored and thought I’d look it up but have some stats I’d like to share tomorrow.
 
A lot depends on Babar Azam, the captain. How he leads the team, how good tactically he is as a captain and how he is able to motivate his players to give their 100 percent. Yes, I agree Pakistan don't have world beaters but they should take a leaf out of this Indian team currently touring Australia. The likes of Hassan Ali, Shaheen and Shah have in them to take 20 wickets. And I agree like India they need to conduct alot of A tours....

Agree wholeheartedly. Babar barely has any experience with the captaincy and this will in fact be his first match as Test captain. I hope he’s done his homework.

Lots of Pakistan A tours are absolutely needed, I’m so disappointed they didn’t even schedule a Shaheens game against South Africa before the Tests.

Abid Ali: 2 innings, ave= 106, SR ave= 59.75, total runs= 212, top score= 174

Babar Azam: 3 innings, ave= 76.3, SR ave= 72.1, total runs= 229, top score= 100

Azhar Ali: 7 innings, ave= 62.1, SR ave= 46, total runs= 435, top score= 119

Kamran Ghulam: 8 innings, ave= 61, SR ave= 49.3, total runs= 488, top score= 108

Saud Shakeel: 8 innings, ave= 47.9, SR ave= 43.9, total runs= 383, top score= 151

Fawad Alam: 6 innings, ave= 102.3, SR ave= 46.8, total runs= 614, top score= 211
 
In Shoaib Akhtar's words , first they need to find "bannde de Puttar" who are badtameez, can do badmashiyaan and show lots of Daleri and Jazbaaa
 
So, this will be the 3rd series defence at Fortress Pakistan after SL and B'desh were thwarted.

Hope South Africa can atleast make 250 in each innings to stay competitive. Otherwise, it's going to be a one sided thrashing .

To develop fortress at home Pakistan needs to play 7-8 Test matches at home every season which is not their priority unfortunately and scheduling should be top notch not that you jump from PSL to Test match. You can't built a fortress with random 2 match series
 
Irrespective of result, it would be treat to watch if Pak batsmen put up a good show in second inning.
 
Horrific display in this test. Seems impossible to save this one but would be heroic if they even got close. Can then use it as a morale booster to level the series in the third test.

Tough times make heroes. Who will stand up and rise to the occasion?

Substandard players, substandard pitches and substandard results.

There is no way a cricket crazy population as large as Pakistan's should be performing so poorly.

A few individuals have kept us just above mediocrity but the lack of a really dominating team in our history is an embarassment and a failure of the nation as a whole.

Bangladesh, Zimbabwe.. Sri Lanka lately against top teams like Ind/Eng/Aus.
 
If Eng and NZ can land with a couple of decent spinners.. And if pitches remain the same flat dead roads they also have a decent chance against current Pakistan team.
The kryptonite for these teams in spin, but Pakistan's spin stocks look woeful and PCB management seems to be very cowardly in their approach and are going for safety first.
Prepare rank turners or green mambas is the way forward, to give their bowling some chance.
 
Can Fortress Pakistan resist the ferocity of Bazball . Immovable object meeting irresistible force. Intriguing stuff.
 
Most visiting teams will fancy beating pakistan in these conditions. Pathetic pitches, team selections and cowards mindset

He will never be pakistan's greatest. He isn't half as good as Miandad. Inzy despite his struggles with bounce, was an excellent player of spin and swing. Babar is nowhere near.
 
For Project 'Fortress Pakistan" to happen, you must prepare spinning tracks or spinning minefields for Australia, England, New Zealand, West indies and South Africa and fast tracks for sub continent teams.
 
Pakistan is single-handedly increasing averages of SENA batsman in Asian conditions.

We asians never get such placid tracks when we play in SENA.

From the above we have lost ten series at home (7 against strong teams, 3 against mid to low tier teams), we have won 12 series (5 against strong to decent teams and 7 against mid to low tier teams. The series we have won have been down to brilliant individual performances by Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Danish Kaneria, Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali.

Pakistan has always had a terrible home record where our pitches have always been low, slow, heavily dependent on reverse swing or day 5 low bounce spin. Pakistan needs to drastically improve the quality of the pitches all around the stadiums and pick the right teams for those pitches.
