The third edition of the PSL sees the birth of a new team that increases the total tally of teams to six for PSL 2018. Being a new team gives them the advantage of going into the tournament with no baggage from previous tournaments. Nevertheless, being the new kid on the block doesn't mean they should be taken lightly, as they have done a good job to recruit big names that have represented other PSL teams in the past.

For the think tank, Multan Sultan was able to land Wasim Akram as director cricket and Tom Moody as Head Coach. Both of these are huge signings, as Akram has been part of the set-up that won Islamabad United their first PSL trophy in the inaugural tournament. Moody himself is a renowned coach who has coached T20 teams around the world, one of them being Sunrisers Hyderabad who won the IPL in 2016 under his tutelage.

The man to lead the Multan Sultan troops on the ground is Shoaib Malik. Malik might prove to be a very good choice for captaincy, as he has the required experience and camaraderie with foreign players that one gains by playing in T20 leagues around the world. He has a good track record when it comes to captaining T20 sides, as in the recent past, he has been able to lead the Sialkot team to the domestic T20 title several times. He can be very handy with the bat in the shorter format of the game and can bowl a few overs when required. Multan seem to be lacking in the spin department, so expect him to bowl at least couple of overs each game.

Their batting reserves look aplenty, with a good mixture of experience and upcoming talent.

In Ahmed Shehzad, Shan Masood, Nicholas Pooran and Kumar Sangakkara, they have a capable top order that can pile on the runs when they get going. Shehzad has recently reminded spectators of his innate ability to play breathtaking shots in the recent New Zealand vs Pakistan T20I series, but Masood has undoubtedly underachieved in this format. He is in red hot form in the 50 over format as seen in the recent domestic One-Day tournaments and would be looking to carry that momentum over into the shorter format.

Emerging players such as Saif Badar and Abdullah Shafique could benefit greatly from Sangakkara's presence and wisdom, as he is easily their most accomplished batsman due to his success in all formats on the international level. His advice and mentoring could go a long way to help these players in all formats of the game. He is likely to act as the anchor of the team and look to bat out the 20 overs.

Lower down the order will be where Kieron Pollard will look to cement his spot, who is a heavyweight in the international T20 circuit in his own right. Followers of T20 cricket know just how devastating Pollard can be on his day, and oppositions will be wary of his ability to switch gears when the need arises. Consistency is not Pollard's strong suit, which often means playing him is a gamble. He will have to click if Multan intend on getting to the latter stages of the tournament. He will be accompanied by country-mate Darren Bravo, who is yet another good pick. In the last edition of the CPL, he helped his team chase down 86 in 32 balls by hitting 6 sixes in just 10 balls. Sohaib Maqsood should accompany these two batsmen in the middle order, who will still be trying to perform consistently enough that the selectors take note of him.

Their bowling department looks very capable indeed, but with a few questionable choices. The leader will undoubtedly be Imran Tahir, the Pakistani-born South African leggie who has arguably been the best LOI spinner of the past couple of years. With his deceptive googlies and variation of pace, he is bound to pick up wickets and setup match winning opportunities for Multan. A massive pick for them indeed! Another leg-spin option for Multan exists in the form of Irfan Khan, popularly known as Mohammad Irfan from FATA who has impressed with his repertoire of skills in domestic limited-over games.

Junaid Khan will be a man seeking to redeem himself after some questionable performances in the previous PSL. He can prove to be a wicket taking option but needs to be able to contain runs as well. The pitches in UAE aren't likely to favour him, so variation will be key.

Accompanying Junaid in the fast bowling department will be Mohammed Irfan, Sohail Tanvir and Mohammad Abbas. It's expected that Sohail Tanvir and Junaid Khan would ideally be in the playing 11. The competition between the 3rd pacer spot should be between Irfan and Abbas. Irfan is notoriously known to have poor fitness and injury related issues, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Abbas in the playing 11 more often than not.

All in all, Multan Sultans have assembled a squad with a good mix of experience and youth. Only time will tell how they perform, but a lack of consistent fast bowling options might hurt their chances to win the title. Being a new team has its advantages and disadvantages, but the biggest advantage undoubtedly has to be the element of unpredictability that being a new outfit brings to the table that can get the better of Multan's opposition. Kashif Bhatti, Irfan Khan and Abdullah Shafique are relatively new players on the scene, and if used properly, might even hold the secret to Multan's success in this tournament.

Prediction: If they perform well as a unit, they can make it to the semi-finals.

Player to watch: Saif Badar has been hyped up by many to be Pakistan's next batting sensation. The PSL has been a platform where young players have made a name for themselves, and he looks set to be the next one.

Multan Sultans Squad for PSL 2018: Shoaib Malik (c), Kieron Pollard, Imran Tahir, Kumar Sangakkara, Sohail Tanvir, Darren Bravo, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan, Ahmed Shehzad, Kashif Bhatti, Irfan Khan, Sohaib Maqsood, Mohammad Abbas, Nicolas Pooran, Shan Masood, Abdullah Shafique, Saif Badar.

Supplementary: Hardus Viljoen, Umar Gul, Umar Siddiq, Ross Whiteley.

Excited to see how MS do, overall I don't rate the team too highly but they have some good players and all it takes to win a league is a few top performances at the right time.

I hope Saif gets to play every game. Also a good opportunity for Maqsood to resurrect his career.

Maybe the birth of a new squad, but they must have the most experienced PSL teams of the lot.
Surely believe they can make it to the knock outs
Think if they end up 4th they can be relatively satisfied with their performances

New squad and a chance for players who would not have been picked by other teams to show their worth as well. So all good for Pak cricket.

Excellent and detailed writeup :)

They have players in form. A good coaching team. Also an experienced captain and a match winning leggie in LO. They will surprise. I hope Maqsood plays the full tournament at 3 or 4. It's his chance to get back into the Pakistan side.

Don't see them winning it but think they will be competitive.

The Windies heavyweights of Pollard and Bravo should boost the batting, got KS there as well.

You can never rule out a T20 team which has Malik as captain and Wasim as team director.

This team is full of experience and that can play an important part in their success, i just feel that Tahir is gonna rock in PSL 3

I hope Saif gets to play every game. Also a good opportunity for Maqsood to resurrect his career.

Can someone explain this to me?

This guy has an absolutely godawful record. There is literally nothing to suggest he will do anything other than be a total and complete flop.

Unless this approaches the greatest sifarish in Pakistani history, it's unlikely this guy will play all games.

He’s in the “emerging” category, so either him or the other emerging player have to play in every game.

Are you referring to maqsood or badar?

Haha. I was talking about Badar, though I am no fan of Maqsood either.

Saif Badar is one heck of a talent. He is young and needs to work on his temperament, thats all. Otherwise he has everything a batsman should.

Saif Badar is one heck of a talent. He is young and needs to work on his temperament, thats all. Otherwise he has everything a batsman should.

But why do people think he's talented?

He's played 26 innings in professional cricket now. He has one half century. He averages around 16 runs irrespective of format. His strike ranges from absolutely terrible in T20 to barely acceptable in 50 overl cricket.

There must be some reason people consider him to be talented??

Numbers are poor no doubt. Have you watched him bat? At his age, you have to look at ingredients.

I wasn't so sure about them but the XI they put out today looked a strong team.

The problem they have though is a long tail and they are very reliant on Sanga and Malik.

They could get exposed when they face stronger sides like Islamabad or Quetta. Do not forget that the toss plays a huge role as well in the UAE.

Good win by MS. Interesting to see Saif Badar played but did not get to bat. Hoping to see him in action soon.

It seems like a very weak team to me.

The bowling happened to have a good day, but the tail is very long and they lack consistently explosive batsmen except Pollard.

I don't expect to see wins like this very often.

Another win today.

Look ok to me.

Multan has definitely performed better than i thought. Thought that their fast bowling reserves might not be up to the mark and could go for alot of runs but done extremely well so far.

Malik and Sanga have been leading from the front extremely well so far. If this continues then they might be hard to stop.

Irfan and Tahir, Malik and Sanga - they've got good balance with some reliable pivots in all facets with some Maqsoods etc that can win you a game on their day too, strong side, Moody has made them gel well thus far, need to just keep it up but they've got their basics and fundamentals right. Contrast that with Lahore where you just can't bank on anyone to put in a 7/10 performance 9/10 times.

Kumar Sangakkara, the leading run-scorer in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL), on Sunday said that the "level of competition in the league is very high”.

The former Sri Lankan skipper was talking to DawnNews in Sharjah. “Some of the best international players are playing alongside great young talent from Pakistan, and the seniors are there too. I think it is one the best leagues out there,” he said.

Sangakkara praised Shoaib Malik on his captaincy skill and said that the skipper never puts pressure on players.

“He [Malik] has been great as a leader because he is very calm. He never puts pressure on us but expects us just to do the job that we are supposed to do,” he shared.

When asked if he will be coming to Pakistan if Multan Sultans qualify for the playoffs, Sangakkara said, “I think we [have] got a long way to go before we qualify. It’s about playing one game at a time and taking a decision when the time comes.”

Commenting on the hat-trick by Imran Tahir, the second by a Sultans' player this season, Sangakkara said, "I think its outstanding."

"The way Imran Tahir bowls it shows the quality of the man and why he is considered one of the best bowlers in the shorter format of the game. It's just his control, his awareness, and the fact that he gives everything. It's a pleasure to play with him," he added.

So all those who thought Multan Sultans had no idea who they were picking for their side....report for duty!

They've made a strong first impression alright. Not been a bad first season for them has it?

Shehzad is in awful form, still they're playing him every match. :yk3 A good start is vital in Twenty20. Shehzad kills the momentum at the start and puts pressure on the middle order. He should be dropped permanently. Now he also have a good excuse of injury, so he can easily avoid some game time.
Maybe Shan will get a chance, good opportunity to show if he's improved or his recent success in domestic cricket was a fluke.

Could wheels be coming off?

Can dropping Ahmed Shehzad do what it did for Pakistan in CT?

Another chance for MS to get back on track

Quotes from Shoaib Malik press conference

"Ahmed Shehzad and Sohaib Maqsood have been giving their best and we have high hopes from these 2 batsmen"

"I am pretty close to PCB and they would have told me if I was not in the plans for future"

"I and the coaching staff are all trying to find out where the problem is but there are a a couple of area where we need to look at"

Good fight but not good enough! Altho did better than Lahore Qalandars in my view.

To be honest, everything about this team was boring and it's good that they are eliminated at the group stage.

They just tried the same tactics in every match and didn't change their tactics according to the opposition.

Also their bench strength was weak.

And one other thing Ahmed Shehzad I mean come on, how did he play every match.
