ISLAMABAD: Persistently performing abysmally in Punjab in almost all by-elections since the 2013 general elections, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) is going through the worst crisis in its history in the province.

While many of its stalwarts have already switched loyalties, more defections are expected over the next few days.

There is likelihood that Nadeem Afzal Chan, a close aide of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, may quit the party.

“Chan has twice tendered resignation to the chairman [Bilawal]. The first time he did so was nearly a month ago. He has now once again conveyed to the chairman that he intends to quit as secretary-general for central Punjab,” a PPP leader told The Express Tribune.

Criticising JIT detrimental for democracy: PPP

Chan, who has served as the chairman of a key parliamentary panel – Punjab Accounts Committee – during the previous PPP tenure, holds one of the most important party posts in Punjab.

A few months ago, there were speculations that Chan might quit soon after his uncle, a former federal minister, Nazar Gondal, has joined Imran Khan’s PTI.

But Chan denied all such reports.

Ghulam Murtaza Satti and Firdous Ashiq Awan are among other prominent electables from northern and central Punjab who have joined the PTI.

Now, close associates of Chan are confirming that differences have emerged within the PPP leadership over the party’s performance in Punjab. “This is a matter of our political survival,” another associate of Chan said.

These PPP leaders believe that if they contest the elections on a PPP ticket, they might not even be able to secure votes from their own constituents.

“Results of NA-120 are an eye-opener… we secured less than 1,500 votes – even lower than lesser known candidates,” another PPP leader said.

PPP rejects census, announces holding of APC

Chairman Bilwal recently formed a committee to determine reasons for the party’s poor performance in NA-120.

Members of the fact-finding committee included former chairman Senate Syed Nayyar Bukhari, Senator Farhatullah Babar and Maula Bukhsh Chandio. This PPP panel is scheduled to hold its first meeting in Lahore on October 3.

The committee invited members of the party’s provincial chapter and presidents of Lahore, Faisalabad and Gujranwala divisions for soul searching.

Many believe it is too late for the party now.

The PPP had a chance to be in the race in Punjab when Bilawal had chalked out an aggressive strategy against the PML-N in the province last year. Bilawal was set to launch an aggressive anti-PML-N protest campaign earlier this year.

The whole programme was rendered ineffective when his father, Asif Ali Zardari, returned to the country in December after remaining absent from the scene for almost one year and a half. Immediately afterwards, he made a hard hitting speech against the establishment in which he obliquely also criticised then army chief General Raheel Sharif.

Zardari also announced that Bilawal would join the National Assembly after contesting a by-election. This did not happen. At the same time, he installed a parallel setup in Punjab by turning to some old guards. This did not settle well with the provincial chapter set up by Bilawal.

“Someone must own the responsibility for the defeat in NA-120,” Chan was quoted as telling Bilawal in a recent meeting, where he reiterated his desire to quit the party post.

PPP leadership is still living in lala land and not opening eyes. After NA-120 disaster Khurshid Shah the opposition leader and a very senior PPP leader said that their voters are voting for PTI to show their anger against PMLN. I mean seriously you label PTI as the fav party of extremist and thn in next line you say that your left voter is voting for them instead for voting for your? Come on

No leader on camera will ever accept the truth of a drubbing "that they are incompetent and corrupt".. Behind the scenes these fact finding committee's know the real reason even the top leaders do however they still continue to think the public is stupid and would continue to vote on old issues which got them in power the first time without realising they need to evolve and work hard..

Slowly if you don't evolve you'll vanish in history when another option comes like PTI has come in Pakistan and lately BJP in UP which killed BSP made it irrelevant..

True they think we are stilling living in 70s and PPP is still enjoying that popula wave based on those old issues roti, kapra & makan (their old slogan). To give you an idea of PPP current situation in Punjab specially in Lahore. In recent 2 Lahore by elections PMLN got around 135k votes (ruling party), PTI got around 120k and guess what PPP got less thn 2500 votes (they are the so called real opposition lol)!

Aitzaz in PTI no way this guy Is an alleged traitor he should remain in PPP

Wow lol that is terrible.. I think PPP is facing leadership crisis with Benazir gone and Zardari involved in corruption cases and Bilawal pakistans very own Rahul Gandhi there is a lack of leadership.. Also the fact that they are incompetent and corrupt doesn't help them and to cap it all of the public now have a better option in Imran khan whose party is at least better than tried and tested failures like PPP..

If Pakistan has to grow they need to vote Imran khan as PM both PML and PPP are the same old corrupt parties with no new dynamic leader to have a vision for Pakistan.. Even if IK does not have a vision for Pakistan (not sure if he has or not) he can't do any worse than his predecessors in PPP and PML so public needs to get him in power..

Honest Man. He had the balls to confess that in Pakistan Sugar Industry which mill does Honest Business as prescribed and ordered by Islam.

Would be a huge blow to PPP if he joins PTI.

All his family is already in PTI, so he does not have a "choice" considering he relies on bradri vote.

He would be a great addition to PTI, huge loss to Zardari league.

Let's see if Zardari's sister Faryal can issue threat to supporters in Punjab just like she does in Sindh.
"Band karo ye dramay, tumhara vote Bhutto k liye hai aur sochna bhi na kisi aur k baray main warna..." DEMOCRACY IN PAKISTAN!

Yea that's what i don't understand i mean why not give someone fresh a chance instead of tried and tested failure? Surely he can do worse thn these experienced looters. As they say "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results"

1 MNA from JI and 1 from the JUI has joined the PTI. PML-N leader from Peshwar also joins Imran Khan's party.
