As the battle to secure the top two spots on the points table continues to flare up, the ninth round of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, which commences on Monday, 25 November, promises to keep the fans on the edge of their seats.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s big win by an innings and 122 runs over Balochistan has helped them leapfrog Southern Punjab and Northern to the second spot and another win in either of their next two matches will go a long way in guaranteeing them a berth in the final of the country’s premier first-class tournament.

They, however, have a challenging task at their hands as they face table-toppers Central Punjab, who have three wins in eight matches, at NBP Sports Complex, Karachi.

Central Punjab enter the match after securing a draw against Sindh on the back of second innings centuries by the Akmal brothers.

They were behind Sindh for the most part of the match as their star-studded batting line-up failed to live up to the expectations in the first innings. But, gutsy 122 and 166 by Umar and Kamran in the second innings ensured Central Punjab’s impeccable record stayed intact.

Uplifted by their maiden win of the tournament, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will try to take a leaf out of Sindh’s book and look to strangle Central Punjab’s batting upfront. That it was their bowling unit which delivered the win is something which will further add to the excitement when the two top-ranked teams go toe-to-toe.

Central Punjab captain Ahmed Shehzad said: “We are going to make sure that we don’t repeat the mistakes we made in the last game. Yes, there were hiccups, but we are learning every game and improving day-by-day.

“Our players are responding brilliantly under pressure. The beauty of first-class cricket is it provides you sessions to bounce back in the match. Sindh were ahead of us for two-and-a-half days after which we came back strongly with both bat and ball.

“We are at the backend of the first-class season now and we have been playing for two-three months so it is not about doing nets anymore. We want our players to be mentally relaxed and strong when we play Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who have recently started to pick up form.”

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa head coach Kabir Khan said: “Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has had a decent run in the season. Our batsmen and bowlers were delivering and we often found ourselves in control of the matches, but we weren’t able to translate that into win.

“However, we were the only side that drew all their games and we knew that a win in the latter stage of the tournament will provide us a boost. Central Punjab have been going well but that we have secured a comprehensive victory before our match against them has given us confidence as a unit.

“This year’s Quaid-e-Azam Trophy has been very competitive and the two top teams on the points table playing at this stage of the tournament is going to add to the excitement for our next fixture.”

Southern Punjab v Sindh, National Stadium, Karachi

Sindh, placed fifth on the points table, need a win to stay alive in the tournament. But, that they are facing a side to whom they have lost previously is bound to add to the pressure in a match which will be live-streamed on the PCB’s YouTube channel.

Sindh made an impressive comeback, putting up performances in both batting and bowling departments, in the last round after their loss to Northern, who then were languishing at the bottom of the points table. Four of their batsmen scored half-centuries, including captain Sarfaraz Ahmed, with the bowling unit, spearheaded by Tabish Khan, tightening the screws around the Central Punjab batsmen.

They will look to build on their performance in the last match against third-ranked Southern Punjab, who succeeded in securing a draw against Northern after being forced to follow-on thanks to Umar Siddiq’s brilliant second innings century, which was supported by half-centuries from Zeeshan Ashraf and Sohaib Maqsood.

So, along with working out the strategy to ensure the highest run-getter of the tournament, Sami Aslam, is not allowed the time to adjust, Sarfaraz will also have to draw plans for Umar, Zeeshan and Sohaib.

Sindh captain Sarfaraz Ahmed said: “We realise that they have a strong batting line-up and Sami Aslam is in good form. We aim to get their wickets early on which will help us in keeping the flow of runs in check.

“It is obviously important for us to win from here to stay alive in the tournament. We have had close games but haven’t been able to cross the line. We are getting closer, but our target remains to win the next two matches.”

Southern Punjab captain Bilawal Bhatti said: “We have an upper hand over Sindh as we have beaten them by a big margin [an innings and 129 runs] when the last time we came face to face.

“Our batsmen are in prime form which is a good omen. Sami Aslam is having a wonderful season. Unfortunately he couldn’t get going in the last match. But, it is heartening to see other batsmen around him like Zeeshan Ashraf, who has graduated from Second XI, and Umar Siddiq, who couldn’t get a good start to the season, are among the runs now.

“If a side’s top three or four batsmen start putting up runs consistently it makes life easy for the bowlers. Our spinners have been doing well, with Left-arm-spinner Mohammad Irfan taking wickets almost every match. Pitches in Karachi are useful for the spinners, but the sea-breeze provides assistance to the pacers as well in the last session of the day.

“It is going to be an exciting match and we are looking forward to it.”

Balochistan v Northern, UBL Sports Complex, Karachi

Northern followed up their maiden win of the season in the seventh round with an imposing performance against Southern Punjab at KRL Stadium, Rawalpindi. Their batting line-up scored 463 runs at an impressive run-rate of 4.22 and their bowlers, by taking 14 wickets, tightened the screws to enforce a follow-on.

They play Balochistan, who are at the bottom of the points table after a crushing defeat, and will look to make the most of the pressure on the Imran Farhat-led side. Like Sindh, Balochistan have to win their last two matches to stay in contention.

There was, however, a silver lining for Balochistan from the previous match as Mohammad Asghar recorded six for 121 – fifth best bowling figures in an innings this tournament – as he continues to impress at the first-class level. His captain will be pinning hopes on him to deliver come Monday.

Balochistan captain Imran Farhat said: “We have had a good run with the bat and it was the first time in the tournament that our batting collapsed. Though our batsmen have delivered, it is our bowling which has not really clicked as a unit, which is pertinent to win first-class matches.

“The next two games are important for us and we awill go in those games with the mindset of winning them.”

Northern captain Nauman Ali said: “We realise another win here will consolidate our position on the points table. For this very purpose, we have travelled to Karachi two days earlier to get acclimatised to the conditions.

“We desperately needed a win when we entered the seventh round and that match against Sindh has gelled us as a unit. Unfortunately, due to bad light in Rawalpindi, we lost overs and it rained on the final day because of which couldn’t win despite enforcing follow-on.

“But, the mood in the camp is great and we are looking forward to our next match.”

Any players that have impressed you?

Zafar Gohar. To be the leading wicket-taker on these dead, flat pitches that arguably gets better for batting as the game goes on as these pitches don't really deteriorate is impressive.

Criminal if he doesn't start vs Sri Lanka.

Sami deserves to be in the squad ahead of Imam imo. Shan isn’t a sure pick either especially if he continues to not convert his starts.

In an ideal world Azhar shouldn’t be in the side so that’s one spot. Not convinced by neither of Imam or Shan.

I agree, but the next Test squad will probably be announced first after the 2nd Test vs Australia, just 8 days between the end of that and the start of the 1st SL Test. Don't think any of the openers will be dropped, maybe Shan if he has a horror show.

Central Punjab’s spinners spun the web around Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s batsmen on day one of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy ninth round fixture at Karachi’s NBP Stadium.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, after winning the toss and electing to bat, were 227 for eight in 90 overs as Zafar Gohar and Bilal Asif shared seven wickets between them.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lost seven wickets for 72 runs with slow left-arm Zafar and off-spinner Bilal returning four for 101 and three for 67.

Openers Sahibzada Farhan (96) and Israrullah (51) provided a steady start as Khyber Pakthunkhwa took Lunch with 70 runs on board with any loss of wicket.

The openers knitted a 97-run partnership before Zafar struck with the ball to trap Israrullah LBW.

Farhan, who struck 11 fours in his 244-ball stay at the crease, and Ashfaq Ahmed (29) crafted a 51-run stand over the course of the afternoon session.

The collapse ensued in the evening session, with the fall of Ashfaq’s wicket, as no Khyber Pakhtunkhwa middle-order batsman entered double-digits.

Aizaz Cheema, who has returned two five-fers in the last two first-class matches, was the other bowler to pick a wicket on the opening day as he denied Farhan his maiden first-class century.

Mohammad Mohsin and Khalid Usman batted at seven each when the day’s play came to end.

When the second day’s play commences on Tuesday morning, Central Punjab will look to consolidate their position on the top of the points table by bagging maximum (3) bowling points.

They have already added two points to their account and one more wicket, inside the 110-over cut-off, will get them the third point.

Second-ranked Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have bagged one point for crossing the 200-run mark.

Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 227-8, 90 overs (Sahibzada Farhan 96, Israrullah 51, Ashfaq Ahmed 29; Zafar Gohar 4-101, Bilal Asif 3-67) v Central Punjab

Balochistan’s Imran Butt stroked his third century of the tournament on the opening day of his side’s four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture against Northern at Karachi’s UBL Sports Complex.

The right-handed opener scored 124 runs from 150 balls and led Balochistan’s way to 271 for eight in 84 overs after Northern, the visiting team, decided to not to contest the toss.

Balochistan negotiated the opening hour without losing any wicket. Left-arm spinner Nauman Ali and left-arm paceman Sadaf Hussain picked up a wicket each in the latter part of the morning session to have the scorecard reading 114 for two at Lunch.

Balochistan consolidated in the second session courtesy a high-paced knock by Imran, who smacked 21 boundaries.

Imran, to date, accumulated 802 runs in eight matches and has become the second highest run-getter in the tournament behind Southern Punjab’s Sami Aslam, who has 857 runs.

Imran failed to get the desired support from the other end as the other notable contribution was 32 off 81 balls from his captain Imran Farhat.

Umar Gul (29) and Mohammad Asghar (0) will resume the Balochistan innings on the second day.

Nauman and Sadaf were chief destroyers for Northern with three wickets apiece.

Northern are fourth on the table with one win in eight games, while Balochistan, without a single triumph, are placed at the bottom.

Scores in brief:

Balochistan 271-8, 84 overs (Imran Butt 124, Imran Farhat 32, Umar Gul 29 not out; Nauman Ali 3-80, Sadaf Hussain 3-57) v Northern

Southern Punjab opener, Zeeshan Ashraf scored his first century of the first-class season to put his team in the driving seat against winless Sindh on day-one of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy ninth round match at the National Stadium on Monday.

Sohaib Maqsood also produced a classy knock of 81 runs to see Southern reach 344 for five at stumps.

All-rounder, Anwar Ali was the stand out bowler in the day with three for 45 from 16 overs.

Zeeshan, a hard-hitting but stylish southpaw scored 133 runs in his third match of the division one championship after getting three successive half centuries including a 94 in the last two rounds. His century today is the third of his first-class career.

Ashraf who idolizes Pakistan opener, Saeed Anwar featured in two productive century partnerships with Abdul Rehman Muzammil and Sohaib Maqsood.

His fourth wicket partnership of 115 runs with Sohaib (81 from 124 balls) put Sindh on the back-foot as both took control in the second session after Southern had decided to bat first.

Joint strong candidates with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to play the final against most likely Central Punjab, Southern lost their inform opener, Sami Aslam (1) early on to Anwar and later Umar Siddiq (27) also fell to young debutant pacer, Shahnawaz Dhani to leave them struggling on 49 for two.

Zeeshan found an able partner in Abdul Rehman (49 from 93 balls) and they steadied the innings with a third wicket stand of 117 runs going to lunch at 91 for two.

Rehman was snapped up by left arm spinner Hassan Khan after lunch but Sohaib strode in to take command of the proceedings.
Playing comfortably on his front foot, Sohaib was quick to punish anything over pitched or short and also went after the spinners using his feet to rattle them as he hit 14 fours.

The stockily built Zeeshan also regularly used his feet to unsettle Hassan and off-spinner, Waleed Ahmed who proved expensive as he was punished on the sweep or through the off-side conceding 73 in 16 luckless overs.

After tea, Sindh captain, Sarfaraz Ahmed got some relief when both the batsmen were dismissed with Zeeshan going for a big hit to be caught at mid-off by Fawad Alam to give Anwar his second wicket.

Anwar also dismissed Sohaib having him caught by Shehzar Muhammad. In their first meeting in the division one match, Southern had defeated Sindh by an innings at the UBL sports complex.

A superb unbeaten hundred from Adnan Akmal and an incisive three-wicket spell from Zia-ul-Haq allowed Southern Punjab to take control of their four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy round-nine match against Sindh on day two at the National Stadium on Tuesday.

Wicketkeeper-batsman and number two among the Akmal brothers, Adnan stroked his way to 107 runs from 152 balls with 14 fours, his second century of the season. Adnan’s other two brothers, Kamran and Umar had scored hundreds for Central Punjab last week against Sindh at the same venue.

It was Adnan’s innings and his ninth wicket partnership of 66 runs with Umaid Asif (37 from 54 balls) that allowed Southern Punjab to declare their first innings on a massive 517 for nine after lunch.

Resuming on 344 for five this morning, Southern lost Agha Salman in the first over to pacer, Anwer Ali who finished with impressive figures of 5 for 75 from 25 overs.

Adnan who resumed on 36, however, stayed calm and found an able partner in his captain, Bilawal Bhatti who scored 45 from 65 balls with six fours and a six.

Their partnership subdued the Sindh attack and the ninth wicket stand meant Southern were in the driving seat.

When Sindh came out to bat they were in immediate trouble as left-arm pacer, Zia-ul-Haq bowled beautifully on what appeared an otherwise batting pitch as he got the ball to move late away from the right handers and combined with Adnan Akmal in three dismissals.

His first victim was Jaahid Ali (6), who was out trying to pull a short pitched ball down the leg-side while later Shehzar Muhammad (5) and Khurram Manzoor (14) were caught behind off big edges.

The seasoned Khurram went after a 45 ball vigil at the crease before he also chased one outside the off-stump. Adnan’s catch to dismiss Shehzar was a spectacular one as he dived in front of first slip to complete the dismissal.

At 34 for three, Sindh were in dire trouble but left-handers, Saad Ali (56 from 94 balls with seven fours) and the experienced, Fawad Alam (60 from 101 balls with seven fours) produced an unbroken stand of 108 runs to ensure there was no more damage. When stumps were called Sindh were 142 for three.

Fawad and Saad during their partnership produced a perfect blend of defence and attacking shots and started to wear the bowlers out as the day progressed.

Zia finished the day on three for 49 but the other Southern bowlers had to struggle as Fawad and Saad scored freely.

Scores in brief:

Southern Punjab 517 for 9 declared, 133.3 overs (Zeeshan Ashraf 133, Adnan Akmal 107 not out, Sohaib Maqsood 81; Anwer Ali 5-75, Hassan Khan 2-110)

Sindh 142 for 3, 44 overs (Fawad Alam 60 not out, Saad Ali 56 not out; Zia-ul-Haq 3-49)

Mohammad Moshin and Khalid Usman made contributions in both departments to hand Khyber Pakhtunkhwa control of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy ninth round fixture against Central Punjab at NBP Stadium.

On the second day of the four-day match, their half-centuries helped Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, ranked second on the points table, to put a decent first innings score of 355 all-out before they shared five wickets to have the table-toppers struggling at 154 for five.

The pair knitted a 119-run ninth-wicket partnership, 112 of which were made on Tuesday, to help the visitors recover from a middle-order collapse which saw them slip to 220 for eight from 152 for two. Both had resumed their innings at the scores of seven.

Khalid Usman, the 33-year-old bowling all-rounder, scored an unbeaten 72 – his 22nd first-class half-century. He cracked six fours and a six in his 104-ball stay at the crease.

Mohsin, from the other end, scored 56 runs from 103 balls, hitting five fours. This was the 23-year-old’s first half-century in the format.

Khalid and Mohsin took the score to 308 for eight by the end of the 110th over, which bagged Khyber Pakhtunkhwa three points, while Central Punjab added only two points to their tally.

Zafar Gohar and Bilal Asif, who picked up four and three wickets on the opening day, failed to add to their wickets’ tally.

It was the leg-spin of Usman Qadir which brought an end to the Khalid-Mohsin partnership. Usman took two wickets for 60 runs.

Mohsin’s leg-spin and Khalid’s slow left-arm orthodox helped Khyber Pakhtunkhwa make early inroads when Central Punjab came out to bat as both Central Punjab openers, Ahmed Shehzad (0) and Salman Butt (13), were back in the pavilion with only 28 runs on board.

A 50-run partnership between Mohammad Saad (49) and Umar Akmal (34) denied the spin-duo any further inroads, albeit for a short time.

Khalid to date has three wickets for 30 runs in 18 overs, while Mohsin has taken two wickets for 44 runs in 12 overs.

For Central Punjab, experienced wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal (38 not out) and young Rizwan Hussain (nine not out) will begin the proceedings on Wednesday morning.

Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 355 all-out, 123.3 overs (Sahibzada Farhan 96, Khalid Usman 72 not out, Mohammad Moshin 56, Israrullah 51, Ashfaq Ahmed 29; Zafar Gohar 4-143, Bilal Asif 3-98, Usman Qadir 2-60)

Central Punjab 154-5, 61 overs (Mohammad Saad 49, Kamran Akmal 38 not out, Umar Akmal 34; Khalid Usman 3-30, Mohammad Mohsin 2-44)

Northern were trailing Balochistan by three runs after making 297 runs for the loss of five wickets on day two of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy ninth round fixture at UBL Sports Complex.

Northern entered the second day with authority to wrap up the Balochistan innings on 300 in 90.2 overs. The Imran Farhat-led outfit added only 29 runs to their overnight score of 271 for 8 which granted them three batting point.

Umar Gul, who resumed his innings on 29, scored his third first-class half-century with 51 off 87, hitting eight fours and a six.

For Northern, left-arm paceman Sadaf Hussain and left-arm spinner Nauman Ali, the captain of the side, stood out with the ball taking four and three wickets respectively to add three bowling points to the team’s account.

Umar Amin’s 69 off 83 balls – laced with nine fours and a six – held Northern’s innings together despite Balochistan taking two wickets to have the visitors two down for 78 at Lunch.

In the second session, Gul chipped in to dislodge Faizan Riaz (19). Amin, however, carried on the momentum to stitch a notable stand of 65 runs with Sarmad Bhatti (83 not out) before getting bowled out by Taj Wali, the left-arm pacer’s second wicket of the innings.

An unbeaten 101-run partnership for the sixth-wicket between Sarmad and wicketkeeper-batsman Jamal Anwar (61 not out) had Northern in command when stumps were drawn.

Faizan Riaz (19) and Hammad Azam (11) were the other two Northern wickets to fall on the second day.

Sarmad, to date, has cracked nine fours and a six in 155 balls, while Jamal has dispatched seven balls for boundaries out of the 83 he has faced.

Scores in brief:

Balochistan 300 all-out, 90.2 (Imran Butt 124, Umar Gul 51, Imran Farhat 32; Sadaf Hussain 4-75, Nauman Ali 3-80)

Northern 297-5, 71 overs (Sarmad Bhatti 83 not out, Umar Amin 69, Jamal Anwar 61 not out; Taj Wali 2-72)

Any body knows: how many runs Fawad needs to select ? (Already reached 12000)
or
century?(Already reached 34)

I'm at the Sindh vs Southern Punjab game right now.

Sarfaraz has reached his hundred and Fawad Alam is chugging his way along to a potential double ton.

Sarfaraz is actually batting like a weight has been lifted off his shoulders. This is a batting track, but his batting is more assured and calm.

There is no number.

He is an age at which all his contemporaries have retired.

It’s too late.

I am relatively sure he will be picked vs SL

Possibly, because Misbah cares nothing about building the long-term foundation of a team by ensuring that 8-9 of the starting eleven are aged 21-30.

But it would be a dumb move.

Shinwari is better than Imran Khan

He deserve to get selected for SL tour. He has recently learned the art of bringing the ball back to right handers.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa neared their second consecutive win of the tournament as they had Central Punjab reeling at 13 for four in the chase of 325 on day three of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy ninth round fixture at NBP Stadium, Karachi.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had entered the ongoing contest at the back of a comprehensive win over Balochistan – by a margin of an innings and 12 runs – and the second-ranked side are on the verge of handing Central Punjab, the table-toppers, their first defeat of the season.

That Central Punjab had lost four quick wickets – in the latter part of the evening session – was due to Usman Shinwari’s fiery spell.

The left-arm pacer bowled Salman Butt (two), night-watchman Aizaz Cheema (4) and Ahmed Shehzad (0), who registered a pair, to take three wickets for two runs in 2.2 overs before stumps were drawn.

Earlier in the session, Khyber Pakthunkhwa had declared their innings after scoring 197 runs for the loss of seven wickets after making the most of the 127-run lead they had garnered by skittling out Central Punjab for 228 in the morning session.

Central Punjab resumed their innings on 154 for five with experienced Kamran Akmal and Rizwan at the crease.

Both batsmen failed to make any further contributions as Kamran (39) added only one run to his overnight score, while Rizwan (nine) couldn’t add another run to his tally.

Usman Qadir’s unbeaten 58-ball 32 – including two fours and a six – was the only notable performance that a Central Punjab player made with the bat.

Khyber Pakthunkhwa’s Sajid took three wickets for 55 runs. Khalid Usman added another scalp to his wickets’ column to return four for 67.

Mohammad Mohsin, who had paired with Khalid to push Central Punjab on the backfoot on Tuesday, couldn’t add another wicket to his tally and returned two for 57, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s captain Fakhar Zaman took one wicket for one run.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa added another three points to their tally for dismissing the opposition inside the 110-over cut-off after gathering two points in their first innings for scoring 308 for eight in the 110-over cut-off

Central Punjab could add only one point in their account for being in the first slab (between 200-249) of runs for the batting points. They had bagged two bowling points earlier in the match.

Khyber Pakthunkhwa’s second innings was driven by Israrullah (40), Sahibzada Farhan (36) and Zohaib Khan (31 not out).

Israrullah and Farhan cracked five fours each, while Zohaib’s smashed two fours in the 40 balls he faced.

Zohaib was joined by Khalid (21 off 22) when Khyber Pakhtunkhwa declared the innings.

Central Punjab’s Zafar Gohar once again starred with the ball as the left-arm orthodox picked up his second four-fer in the match – this one at the expense of 82 runs.

The onus of saving the match and ensuring that Central Punjab maintains impeccable record now lies on Mohammad Saad and Umar Akmal who resume their innings on one and 0 respectively on Thursday, the final of the match.

Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 355 all-out, 123.3 overs (Sahibzada Farhan 96, Khalid Usman 72 not out, Mohammad Moshin 56, Israrullah 51, Ashfaq Ahmed 29; Zafar Gohar 4-143, Bilal Asif 3-98, Usman Qadir 2-60) and 197-7d, 54 overs (Israrullah 40, Sahibzada Farhan 36, Zohaib Khan 31 not out, Khalid Usman 21 not out, Fakhar Zaman 21; Zafar Gohar 4-82)

Central Punjab 228 all-out, 84.1 overs (Mohammad Saad 49, Kamran Akmal 39, Umar Akmal 34, Usman Qadir 32 not out; Khalid Usman 4-67, Sajid Khan 3-55, Mohammad Mohsin 2-57) and 13-4, 4.2 overs (Rizwan Hussain 6; Usman Shinwari 3-2, Sajid Khan 1-7)

Fawad Alam scored a double hundred and captain, Sarfaraz Ahmed a century as Sindh grinded down Southern Punjab on day-three of the four-day day first-class ninth-round Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match at the National Stadium on Wednesday.

Fawad stroked his way to the fourth double century of his career making (211 from 309 balls) while Sarfaraz (131 from 174 balls) scored his first hundred in domestic cricket in five-years to put together a big partnership of 278 runs for the fifth wicket.

Their partnership allowed Sindh to end on 486 in response to Southern’s 517 for 9 declared.

Fawad achieved another personal milestone when he also crossed 12,000 first-class runs.

Their stand effectively ended any hopes that the Southern team harboured of forcing a result in the match and trying to grab second spot in the points table when Sindh resumed on 142 for three this morning.

The two forged their alliance and took Sindh to 253 for four at lunch after overnight batsman, Saad Ali fell early adding just four runs to his overnight score as he was caught for 60 from 106 balls on the bowling of Bilawal Bhatti who finished with four for 82.

But Saad’s overnight partner, Fawad who resumed on 60 showed no intentions of giving up his wicket and he found an able partner in his captain as their century partnership came from just 138 balls in 107 minutes.

Southpaw Fawad who is a prolific scorer in first-class cricket with an imposing batting average of 56 completed his third century of the season after lunch.

Sarfaraz who last scored a century in domestic first-class cricket for PIA against ZTBL way back in 2014 was more aggressive reaching his hundred from 119 balls with 12 fours.

As the two batted together the Southern bowlers wilted on an unresponsive pitch and even the second new ball didn’t produce the desired results for pacers, Bilawal, Zia-ul-Haq and Umaid Asif.

Eventually it was the tall left-arm spinner, Muhammad Irfan who broke through when bowling consistently round the wicket he got one to bounce more from a bowlers run-up patch and Sarfaraz going forward to play a defensive shot top edged to the bowler. Sarfaraz’s innings of 131 spanned 174 balls and included 13 fours.

Fawad, however, found Anwar Ali (28) to be a good partner and carried on reaching his double hundred by hitting off-spinner, Agha Salman to deep mid-wicket for a four to reach his personal milestone.

He was finally caught at deep mid-on trying to hit the same shot against Irfan as his innings included 25 fours.

Bilawal than trapped Hassan Khan leg before for nine and also picked up Anwar caught at first slip and Waleed Ahmed to hasten an end to the Sindh innings while last man Shahnawaz Dhani was run out.

Both teams took the 5 bonus points for batting as they scored 400 plus in their 110 overs.

Scores in brief:

Southern Punjab 517 for 9 declared, 133.3 overs (Zeeshan Ashraf 133, Adnan Akmal 107 not out, Sohaib Maqsood 81; Anwer Ali 5-75, Hassan Khan 2-110)

Sindh 486 all out, 132 overs (Fawad Alam 211, Sarfaraz Ahmed 131, Saad Ali 60; Zia-ul-Haq 3-105, Muhammad Irfan 2-129)
