The ninth round of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy confirmed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as one of the two finalists. In the 10th and final round of the double-league group-stage, which begins on 26 December, as many as three teams –Central Punjab, Northern and Southern Punjab – will battle for the remaining spot.

Northern v Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at National Stadium

Since topping the six-team points table after the conclusion of the sixth round, Northern have faced two defeats and drawn one match that has seen them slip to the third spot. They are 14 points behind the second-ranked Southern Punjab and will enter the last round after an innings and five runs defeat to Balochistan.

In front of the broadcast cameras at the iconic Test venue, they will be eager to turn this fixture into a dress rehearsal for the final, a five-day affair, which will be played from 1-5 January. If they are successful in making that happen, Northern would appear in the final for the second time in as many seasons.

Hammad Azam and Mohammad Nawaz who are the fourth and fifth highest run-getters in the tournament lead Northern’s batting department. Hammad has accumulated 808 runs at 57.71 and Nawaz has made 678 runs at 52.15.

Captain Nauman Ali continues to spearhead the bowling unit. The 34-year-old left-arm orthodox is the top wicket-taker in the season with 61 scalps at 21.79 runs per dismissal and has the most (six) five-wicket hauls. He is the only bowler from his team to feature in the list of top 10 wicket-takers.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa missed out on playing the final in the 2019-20 edition by a mere six points, but this season, under their head coach Abdul Razzaq, they have become the first team to secure a final berth and have the most wins for a team in the season (five) to date.

Kamran Ghulam’s phenomenal form with the bat has been vital behind their success this season. The 25-year-old right-handed batsman has scored 907 runs at an average of 56.69 and has made three centuries and as many half-centuries from nine matches. He is the only batsman to breach the 900-run mark, to date.

Off-spinner Sajid Khan has been instrumental in dismantling the opposition batting line-ups. With 56 wickets at an average of 24.98, he is the second highest wicket-taker.

Central Punjab v Southern Punjab at State Bank Stadium

Defending champions Central Punjab have staged a remarkable comeback, which has seen them rise from the bottom of the points table and become serious contenders to play their second consecutive final. They are currently ranked fourth with 111 points and are 17 behind their opponents Southern Punjab.

The first-leg of the Punjab Derby ended in a draw, but both teams will be eager to secure the second final’s spot which is set to make this match a mouth-watering contest

Central Punjab’s batsmen Mohammad Saad, Qasim Akram, Saad Nasim and Usman Salahuddin have picked up the form at the crucial juncture of the season. Saad followed up his first innings century with a half-century, while the others scored half-centuries in the last match.

Qasim, a Pakistan U19 player who featured in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup earlier in the year, also made a notable contribution with the ball as his off-spin earned him his maiden five-wicket haul in the drawn contest against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, he also scored a valuable fifty in the second innings showcasing his all-round skills.

Southern Punjab were off to a perfect start in the season as they led the points table for the first five rounds before they slipped to third following a defeat to Northern by six wickets. However, two wins in last three matches have gained them back the desired rhythm ahead of the all-important tenth round match.

Their captain Umar Siddiq will be hoping that their most prolific bowler Zahid Mahmood continues to bamboozle the batsmen with his leg-spin. The 33-year-old is the side’s leading wicket-taker with 48 scalps in nine matches.

Salman Ali Agha has been anchoring Southern Punjab’s batting unit as he has made two centuries and five half-centuries and has 817 runs in the season, the third most.

Sindh v Balochistan at UBL Sports Complex

Both teams are out of the race for the final. Their battle, however, will be to save themselves from finishing at the bottom of the points table.

Balochistan, who finished last in the previous season are 17 points ahead of Sindh, who have 85 points, and the latter will have a serious catching up to do.

Balochistan enter the contest at the back of a commanding win over Northern thanks to Kashif Bhatti, who recorded a first innings five-wicket haul to reduce the opposition to 203.

Kashif, the left-arm orthodox, is the side’s top wicket-taker with 28 victims and seventh on the overall list and he is followed by pacer Taj Wali (25 wickets at 29.16).

Akbar-ur-Rehman, with 563 runs at 43.31, is their top batsman in the season.

Though Sindh as a team have not been up to the mark, their players have put extraordinary individual performances. With 871 runs at an average of more than 58, 25-year-old Saud Shakeel is the second best batsman in the season. The list of top 10 batsmen includes Sindh’s Sharjeel Khan (634 runs at 48.77) at seven and their captain Asad Shafiq (605 at 46.54) at nine.

Veteran pacer Tabish Khan has 27 scalps and is the eighth best bowler in the season to date, while the rise of 22-year-old Shahnawaz Dhani and leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed has not only impressed the followers of the game, but it augurs well for Sindh in the coming seasons.

Sindh have only one win, which they recorded against Central Punjab in their season opener.

Must win match for Northern to get into the final otherwise Southern Punjab are likely to join KP in final.

Northern and SP getting flogged. CP looking like they're in pole position for the second finalist position after Day 1.

Still plenty of cricket to be played.

A brilliant century from Usman Salahuddin helped defending champions Central Punjab post 309 for four on day one of their 10th round first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture against Southern Punjab at the State Bank Stadium on Saturday.

The knock played a vital role in helping fourth-ranked Central Punjab secure three batting points with still 10 overs remaining.

Before this contest, Central Punjab were 17 points behind their opponents, who are placed second on the six-team points table with 128 points and are strong contenders to face Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the table-toppers, in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final, a five-day affair which begins at the National Stadium on 1 January.

Thirty-year-old Usman was unbeaten on 139 – his first century of the ongoing season and 24th overall – at the close of play and had the company of Pakistan U19 all-rounder Qasim Akram, who made 12 not out and had scored his maiden first-class half-century in his side’s last match.

Usman crunched 20 fours from the 268 balls he faced. He stitched a remarkable 143-run alliance for the second wicket with opener Ali Zaryab (78, 11 fours) after Muhammad Akhlaq was trapped in front of stumps by pacer Aamer Yamin.

In the latter half of the day, Saad Nasim – fresh of a century in the last match – supported Usman as the 30-year-old right-handed batsman recorded a brisk 72 off 71, studded with five fours and four sixes.

The pair added 116-runs for the fourth wicket before Saad was dismissed by leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood, who took two wickets for 104 in 21 overs.

At the National Stadium and in front of broadcast cameras, scintillating centuries from Israrullah and Rehan Afridi kept Northern bowlers on the backfoot and denied them opportunities to gain crucial bowling points as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were 380 for four from 89.5 overs at the close of play.

Northern, ranked third and 14 points behind Southern Punjab, have 10.1 overs more to maximise the bowling points.

To date, they have bagged one point, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa earned four of the five batting points and are on course to add the last point when the play resumes on the second morning of the four-day affair.

Both, opener Israrullah and wicketkeeper-batsman Rehan, made 127 each from 142 and 167 balls respectively.

Israrullah smashed 17 fours and two sixes as he knitted a solid 158-run opening stand with Sahibzada Farhan (62 off 87, six fours and three sixes).

Rehan also smashed 17 fours but his tally of sixes stood at three.

Kamran Ghulam, who leads the chart for the highest run-getters with 960 runs and remains the only batsman to breach the 900-run mark this season, was unbeaten on 53.

On Sunday, he will have a new partner as Adil Amin (eight) was dismissed by Waqas Ahmed on what turned out to be the last ball of the evening session.

Northern’s Sadaf Hussain, Mohammad Nawaz and Mubasir Khan picked up the other three wickets.

In a match in which both teams are ensuring they do not end on the bottom of the points table, Akbar-ur-Rehman’s 125 not out had Balochistan placed at 314 for five in 90 overs after their captain Imran Farhat elected to bat after winning the toss against Asad Shafiq’s Sindh.

Akbar struck 14 fours and a six in his 204-ball knock, while other notable performances with the bat came from Ayaz Tasawar (72) and Imran and Bismillah Khan (both 42).

Veteran pacer Tabish Khan picked up two wickets for 63.

By the end of day one, Balochistan had gathered three batting points, while Sindh had earned one bowling point.

Kamran Ghulam becomes first batsman to score 1,000 runs in revamped Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

Karachi, 27 December 2020:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Kamran Ghulam crossed the 1,000-run barrier in the ongoing first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy when he completed his fourth century of the season on the second day of his side’s 10th round match against Northern at the National Stadium on Sunday.

He is the only batsman to achieve the feat since the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy was revamped ahead of the 2019-20 season.

The 25-year-old Upper Dir-born converted his overnight 53 into 107, which helped Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bag maximum batting points (five) on their way to a mammoth 521 all out in 130.2 overs.

Kamran smashed 11 fours and a six in his 230-ball stay and now has 1,014 runs at 59.65 in the season.

All-rounder Zohaib Khan made a notable contribution with 69 (10 fours) before he was trapped in front of stumps by off-spinner Ali Sarfraz, who was the pick of the bowlers for Northern with four wickets for 15 runs in five overs.

Northern were 180 for two at the close of play thanks to half-centuries from Nasir Nawaz and Mubasir Khan and required 191 runs to avoid follow-on.

Nasir made 65 from 68 balls in a knock studded with nine fours and a six.

Eighteen-year-old Mubasir, who scored a century on his first-class debut in the eighth round, was unbeaten on 57.

He will be joined by all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz when the play resumes on the penultimate morning of the 10th and final round. The pair has so far added 70 runs for the unfinished third wicket.

At the State Bank Stadium, Central Punjab consolidated grip on their fixture against Southern Punjab and pocketed as many as seven points.

Brilliant fast bowling displays by Bilawal Iqbal (three for 23) and Central Punjab captain Hasan Ali (three for 40) had Southern Punjab tottering at 153 for nine in reply of 493 for seven.

Southern Punjab need 190 runs to avoid follow-on.

The only notable contributions with the bat came from Southern Punjab captain Umar Siddiq, who with 51 was the top-scorer in the innings, and Salman Ali Agha (45).

Earlier Usman Salahuddin converted his overnight 139 into his career-best 219 not out.

The 30-year-old crunched 27 fours and two sixes in the 346 balls he faced before Qasim Akram scored 65 off 102 (nine fours and a six) while batting at six.

Southern Punjab’s Zahid Mahmood added two more scalps to his tally – Qasim and Ali Shan (36) – and finished with four for 152.

Sindh were 160 for six and trailed Balochistan by 254 runs with their captain Asad Shafiq (65 not out) and Tabish Khan (four not out) at the crease at the UBL Sports Complex.

Pacers Taj Wali and Umaid Asif reduced Sindh to 20 for three with the dismissals of Khurram Manzoor (0), Sharjeel Khan and Saud Shakeel (both nine).

Their problems compounded when Saad Ali (three) and wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Hasan (27) were sent back to hut as the scorecard read 86 for five. A 67-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Asad and debutant Azam Khan (38 off 48) helped Sindh weather Balochistan’s bowling attack.

Balochistan made 414 before they were all out in 126 overs. Akbar-ur-Rehman added 39 to his yesterday’s score before he was dismissed on 164 by Mohammad Asghar, who recorded his ninth five-wicket haul.

Akbar’s 306-ball innings included 16 fours and a six.

Twenty-one-year-old Asghar returned five for 101 in 34 overs.

Balochistan were 355 for six at the completion of 100 overs. As such, they bagged four batting points, while Sindh managed two bowling points.

Kamran Ghulam has absolutely crushed it this QeA season. I feel like one of him and Saud could get the call for SA tests. For the bowlers, Hasan and maybe one of Sajid and Nauman. I'd go for Sajid for longevity.

I heard that Kamran Ghulam became 13th player to score 1000 runs in a QAT season.
The highest ever runs in season is some sadaat guy in 1980s 1217 so he needs 200 more in 3 innings if he gets.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me who is the highest wicket taker in QAT season ever?

Has anyone taken 100?

Thankfully asad shafiq was not made pak captain .His domestic side is thrashed by one after another while asad is doing what he do best playing impact less inning per four inning while getting out cheaply when his side need him

I see Azam Khan is playing as a specialist batsman rather than a wicketkeeper. Muhamad Hasan has 3 catches and a stumping to his name. Catches of fast bowlers and spinner, stumping off the spinner.

Also Azam Khan is batting at 3 in second innings despite usual number 3 being second topscorer in entire tournament.

Central Punjab 1st Inning Dec.493/7 In 117.4 overs
Southern Punjab
Follow-on 187 all out In 67.4 overs

Central Punjab were on course to defend their title in the final of the ongoing first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy as their disciplined bowling display allowed Southern Punjab a measly eight-run second innings lead with just three wickets intact on the penultimate day of the 10th fixture at the State Bank Stadium.

Central Punjab added six crucial bowling points, which took their bonus points tally from the match to 10, as they bowled out Southern Punjab for 187 and forced them to follow on.

Upon completion of the impending win, the Hasan Ali-led side will be granted 16 more points for an outright win which will see them jump to the second spot in the six-team points table. They are currently ranked fourth with 111 points.

With 128 points, Southern Punjab currently occupy the second spot and they have managed only one bonus point from the ongoing contest.

Their woes amplified on Monday when they could add only four runs to their overnight 183 for nine in reply of Central Punjab’s imposing 493 for seven.

With Southern Punjab facing a daunting 306-run deficit, Zain Abbas put a solid fight with 118 off 172 balls (18 fours and a six) but the opener failed to receive the desired support from the other end except for Salman Ali Agha, who made 79.

The destroyer-in-chief in the second innings was spinner Ahmed Safi Abdullah, who took four wickets for 98 runs.

Southern Punjab will resume their innings on 314 for seven with Saif Badar (17 not out) and Mohammad Ilyas (four not out) at the crease.

At the National Stadium, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa enjoyed a strong 272-run second innings lead over Northern, who were bowled out for 336 after starting the day at 180 for two.

Eighteen-year-old Mubasir Khan added two runs to his score before he was dismissed on 59 (seven fours).

Faizan Riaz, Mohammad Nawaz and Hammad Azam made notable contributions with the bat as they scored 42, 38 and 37 respectively

Sajid Khan (four for 114) and Khalid Usman (three for 89) shared seven wickets between them.

Table-toppers Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were 87 for three in 30 overs after Israrullah, who followed up his century from the first innings with 35, and Sahibzada Farhan (38) put a 68-run opening stand.

Nawaz’s left-arm orthodox accounted for the wickets of both openers.

Last year’s finalists and third-ranked Northern have bagged four bonus points from this contest.

A Central Punjab win will perish their hopes of playing their second consecutive Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final as Northern will find themselves three points behind the defending champions even after winning the match.

Sindh were fighting to secure a draw after Balochistan forced them to follow-on at the UBL Sports Complex. They are still 11 runs behind Balochistan’s 414.

Batting second, Sindh were 208 for three at the close of play on the back of half-centuries from Khurram Manzoor, who was unbeaten on 82, and Saud Shakeel, who scored 90 off 175 balls and hit nine fours.

Earlier in the day, they could add only 35 runs to their overnight score of 160 for six before they were bowled out in 14 overs, which allowed Balochistan six more bowling points that took their bonus points tally to 10.

Sindh captain Asad Shafiq was left stranded on 87 not out (168 balls, 14 fours).

Left-arm orthodox Kashif Bhatti took four wickets for 56 and Umaid Asif returned three for 39.

90 for Saud Shakeel. Will finish just short of 1000 runs for the tournament. An excellent tournament from the Sindh batsman.

Hasan Ali bowled 5 no balls in 2nd innings, which is a slight concern.

And Sindh keeps losing. Reminds me of Asad Shafiq, I really like Saud and I do think he deserves a Test callup but players are made by winning matches for their team, not battling out losses and draws. No idea what’s up with this streak of low first innings scores. Lack of concentration maybe? Pressure player?

So impressed with the coaching - look at the scorecard for their second innings, they sent both of the batsmen who scored in single digits last innings in, since everyone else scored 50s!

Clearly trying to get everyone in form and confident for the final, rather than stick to the established batting chronology. Excited to see Hassan Ali bowl in the final to Kamran Ghulam, and Sajid Khan to Ali Zaryab. Bring it on.

His first innings failures and Saif Badar's stubborn determination to not get a 100 are the most frustrating things for me this season.

Zia-ul-Haq fined 20 per cent match-fee for showing dissent

Karachi, 29 December 2020:

Southern Punjab’s Zia-ul-Haq has been fined 20 per cent of his match-fee for breaching the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel during his side’s match against Central Punjab in the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy at the State Bank Stadium.

Zia was found to have violated Article 2.5 of the PCB Code of Conduct, which reads as: “Using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during a match”.

The incident happened in the 118th over of Central Punjab’s first innings on the second day of the match on Sunday, when Zia pointed towards the pavilion after dismissing Hasan Ali.

Zia pleaded guilty to the charge and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Iftikhar Ahmed. The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Shozab Raza and Imran Javed.

Karachi, 29 December 2020: Defending champions Central Punjab will play Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the final of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2020-21 as they sealed a commanding 10-wicket win over Southern Punjab at the State Bank Stadium.

The final, a five-day affair, will be played at the National Stadium from 1-5 January.

Set 63 runs t0 win, Central Punjab strolled to the target in 10 overs during the afternoon session of the last day of the 10th round with Muhammad Akhlaq and Mohammad Saad unbeaten on 38 off 42 and 25 off 18, respectively.

Central Punjab were deemed out of the race for the final in the first half of the double-league group stage as they sat at the bottom of points table with just 30 points – coming from three defeats and two draws. They, however, staged a remarkable comeback by winning four of their remaining five matches to finish second with 137 points.

Southern Punjab started the day with a thin eight-run lead that they stretched to 62 on the back of Saif Badar’s 52 (four fours and a six). Saif resumed the fourth and final day on 17 and had the company of Mohammad Ilyas, who failed to add a run to his overnight score before he was dismissed on four.

Ahmed Safi Abdullah finished with four wickets, all of which were taken yesterday, for 108, while his captain Hasan Ali returned three of 91.

Reports from Sindh v Balochistan and Northern v Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to follow.

Scores in brief:

At State Bank Stadium, Central Punjab beat Southern Punjab by 10 wickets

Central Punjab 493-7 dec, 117.4 overs (Usman Salahuddin 219 not out, Ali Zaryab 78, Saad Nasim 72, Qasim Akram 65; Zahid Mahmood 4-152) and 63-0, 10 overs (Muhammad Akhlaq 38 not out, Mohammad Saad 25 not out)

Southern Punjab 187 all out, 67.4 overs (Umar Siddiq 51, Salman Ali Agha 45, Aamer Yamin 23; Bilawal Iqbal 3-27, Hasan Ali 3-40) and 368 all out, 100.4 overs (Zain Abbas 118, Salman Ali Agha 79, Saif Badar 52, Umar Siddiq 32, Imran Rafiq 30; Ahmed Safi Abdullah 4-108, Hasan Ali 3-91)

Match points: Central Punjab 26 (16 outright win, four batting, six bowling), Southern Punjab 1 (bowling)

Congratulations to CP and KP. Great fightback from CP having started the season so poorly, Hasan Ali's captaincy deserves credit too.

I hope we get to see more teams in domestic cricket so some of the non-performing teams can get relegated and some of their better performers can move to better teams. It doesn’t make sense to have team like Sindh to stay in the tournament.
