Following two riveting rounds of cricket across three venues in Karachi, the third round of first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy commences from Friday. After the completion of this round, red-ball cricket will take an 11-day break during which the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 playoffs and final will be held at Karachi’s National Stadium.

This round also serves as an opportunity for the up and coming first-class cricketers to make an impression on the national selectors as this will be the last round before Pakistan and Pakistan Shaheens squads for the New Zealand tour are finalised.

Southern Punjab have had an impeccable start in the tournament. The Shan Masood-led team has not only started with two wins in as many matches, which is already one more than they had in the entire previous season, they have also collected as many as 50 points from the two victories.

Following their four-wicket win against Balochistan on a thrilling final day of their second-round tie at the National Stadium, they take on Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who have one loss and one draw in their two matches, at the National Bank Sports Complex.

Southern Punjab are bolstered by the presence of leg-spinner Zahid Mehmood, who with 17 scalps at a remarkable 12.88 runs per wicket, is leading the wicket-takers chart for the tournament. While, Zahid has been most impressive, Southern Punjab will be hoping the rest of their bowlers join the party, as their next best bowler, Salman Ali Agha, is positioned 12th on the list with five wickets from two matches.

All-rounder Hussain Talat followed up his career-best 253 in the tournament opener with a 39 and 14 and he tops the list for the highest run-getters. His captain, Shan, is two positions below him with 196 runs at an average of 65.33 as the left-handed opener followed his century in the first round with a half-century at the National Stadium.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa batsmen are yet to truly announce themselves in this year’s tournament, which is underscored by the fact that they have bagged only two batting bonus points, the lowest amongst the six teams, to date.

They have only one batsman – Adil Amin – amongst the top ten run-getters. The right-handed batsman occupies the ninth spot with 146 runs, which includes a half-century, from four innings.

The Ashfaq Ahmed-led team, which is placed fifth on the points table with 11 points, will look towards spin-twins – off-spinner Sajid Khan and left-arm orthodox Khalid Usman – for inspiration. While Sajid began the tournament with a five-wicket haul and has 13 wickets in the tournament so far, Khalid has seven dismissals to his name.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have made two changes in their side for the third round. Pacer Sameen Gul, who is unfit, and Sahibzada Farhan, who moves to the Second XI, make way for all-rounder Zohaib Khan and batsman Musadiq Ahmed.

After being on the receiving end of a drubbing by an innings and 96 runs, Northern turned things around with an impressive nine-wicket win, registered inside eight sessions, against Central Punjab which was spearheaded by their captain Nauman Ali, who took 11 wickets in the match, including second innings return of seven for 53.

Thirty-four-year-old Nauman is leading his team’s bowling attack – with 15 wickets at 17.40 – and is third on the list of the bowlers with most wickets in the tournament. With no bowler from his side in the next 11 places, Nauman will be hoping for support when their fixture against Sindh begins on Friday at the UBL Sports Complex.

Along with his bowlers, Nauman will also hope that his batsmen deliver before the tournament takes a break as only three Northern batsmen – Hammad Azam, Umar Amin and Asif Ali – have scored half-centuries.

On the other hand, Sindh’s batting department is bolstered by the return to batting form of Sarfaraz Ahmed, who stroked the 12th century of his first-class career in the previous round.

With a century and a 91, veteran middle-order batsman Fawad Alam has gathered 221 runs, second most in the tournament to date, at an average of 73.67. That Asad Shafiq also got a half-century under his belt in the previous game augurs well for Sindh, who boast a solid middle-order.

Ashiq Ali had an outstanding outing in the last game as the off-spinner took 11 wickets for 127 runs, which included two five-wicket hauls. With pacers Tabish Khan and Sohail Khan in the ranks, along with left-arm orthodox Mohammad Asghar, Sarfaraz will be looking to pocket maximum bonus points for bowling in the first innings. His team enters the match after a thrilling draw against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Central Punjab, the title defenders, have had two forgettable outings and, as such, are languishing at the bottom of the points table with only six points.

To further strengthen his batting department, Azhar Ali has called up Abid Ali, following the conclusion of the three-ODI series against Zimbabwe in Rawalpindi, for the contest against Balochistan at the National Stadium.

The fixture between the two teams will be broadcast live by PTV Sports, while the action will be relayed all across the globe through Pakistan Cricket Board’s YouTube channel. On the days Pakistan play Zimbabwe in three T20Is, the action will move to the PTV National to ensure uninterrupted delivery of quality domestic cricket action to the fans.

Central Punjab are yet to make an impact in the tournament. Their highest run-scorer Ahmed Shehzad has accumulated only 122 runs – 69 of which came in his opening innings of the tournament. With 120 runs – which include two half-centuries in a match – and 111 runs, Mohammad Saad and Azhar Ali are the next two batsmen in the order.

Ahmed Safi Abdullah is the only bowler for Central Punjab to have recorded a five-wicket haul in the tournament so far and their bowling options have taken a hit with pacers Hasan Ali and Ahmed Bashir doubtful for the third round due to groin sprain.

In the absence of Yasir Shah, who has requested a leave for personal reasons, Balochistan will be led by Imran Farhat, who scored a century in his side’s second-round fixture and has so far scored 177 runs – the fourth most in the tournament – at an average of 59.

Twenty-nine-year-old Dera Murad Jamali-born Taimur Ali showed his batting prowess with a remarkable 86 not out in his team’s first innings against Southern Punjab, while with 92 and 32, opener Imran Butt, the top scorer of the last edition, was also amongst the run-getters in the thriller played at the National Stadium.

Yasir has taken 16 wickets, just one less than Zahid, from four innings and Balochistan might feel his absence. But, this serves an opportunity for young pacer Khurram Shahzad (eight wickets at 21.38), Kashif Bhatti (six wickets at 27.83) and Taj Wali (five wickets at 22.60) to step up and prove their mettle.

Balochistan have called-up leg-spinner Usama Mir, who has taken eight wickets from two Second XI Quaid-e-Azam Trophy games as Yasir’s replacement.

Third round fixtures (6-9 November), Karachi:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa v Southern Punjab – NBP Sports Complex
Northern v Sindh – UBL Sports Complex
Central Punjab v Balochistan – National Stadium

Any update on Naseem’s fitness? What was his issue again? And is it serious?

Hoping for a big hundred from Saud Shakeel and more failures for Azhar and Asad.

Abdullah shafiq should have been playing first class rather than waste his time carrying drinks

Abid Ali is back. Bet he will replace Ali Zaryab who was CP highest scorer!

I still think someone should be selected based on stats but by that extension Tabish deserved a debut years ago

Good to see Hammad Azam scoring runs.

He and aamer yamin should have been given more chances in intl cricket. Their FC records are quite good for an all rounder.
But they find faheem Ashraf as the chosen one.

But they find faheem Ashraf as the chosen one.

I like Hammad but he's just ok, he's not exactly mind blowing. He now and again performs with the bat and the bowling is about ok. However, i would opt for Yamin any day of the week.

Dilbar Hussain and Ali Zaryab being dropped from their respective teams this round is pretty disappointing.

Sindh gathered three bonus points for bowling on the opening day of their round three first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture against Northern at the UBL Sports Complex as pacers Sohail Khan and Tabish Khan shared six wickets between them equally.

Northern found themselves in a precarious 90 for five as the two Khans hunted in pairs after Northern captain Nauman Ali elected to bat. Tabish’s three wickets cost 41 runs, while Sohail took his for 43 runs.

With 62 runs from 129 balls, Umar Amin was the only batsman amongst Northern top six to post a substantial score. The left-handed batsman struck six fours and a six.

A 79-run alliance for the seventh wicket between Hammad Azam (64) and Mohammad Nawaz (73) lifted Northern out of trouble and helped them post 319 for nine in 90 overs before the close of play.

All-rounder Hammad hit six fours and three sixes in his 102-ball stay at the crease and Nawaz smashed eight four and two sixes as the pair helped Northern collect three batting bonus points.

Left-arm orthodox Fawad Alam took two wickets for 24 runs.

Northern’s last wicket has added 30 runs to their total. Nauman (15) and Waqas Ahmed (18) will resume the innings on day two.

Southern Punjab captain Hussain Talat’s decision to not to opt for the toss and elect to bowl paid dividends as Test pacer Mohammad Abbas took four wickets against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the National Bank Sports Complex.

The right-arm pacer helped his team pocket two bonus points as Khyber Pakthunkhwa finished the day on 261 for six in 93 overs.

Abbas’ four wickets included Israrullah (14), Ashfaq Ahmed (11), Kamran Ghulam (64) and Zohaib Khan (23). The 30-year-old accounted for Israrullah and Ashfaq Ahmed in the morning session as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lost their two wickets for 36.

A rearguard effort from Musadiq Ahmed, who received a promotion from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Second XI, and Adil Amin, who recorded his career’s 17th half-century, provided stability to the batting team with a 53-run partnership for the third wicket.

Following Musadiq’s exit, Adil held Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s innings together as the 29-year-old right-handed batsman stroked a valiant 90 from 181 balls.

Over the course of his stay at the crease, which was studded with nine fours and two sixes, Adil also stitched a crucial 99-run stand for the fourth wicket with Kamran Ghulam, who made 175-ball 64, which included nine boundaries.

On Saturday, Khalid Usman (six) and Sajid Khan (four) will resume the innings for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who have gathered two batting bonus points to date for crossing the 250-run barrier inside 100 overs. They have seven more overs to add another point by scoring 39 runs in the next seven overs.

Balochistan scored 239 for six in 85 overs against Central Punjab at the National Stadium.

In the match Imran Butt and Ali Waqas recorded a 120-run alliance for the second wicket after Waqas Maqsood, who returned three for 47, dismissed Sami Aslam (seven) after Azhar Ali, the Central Punjab captain, decided to field.

Imran scored his career’s 23rd half-century as he scored 53 off 121 balls before he was dismissed by Ehsan Adil.

Ali Waqas, who was promoted to Balochistan’s First XI team, top-scored with 75. The 30-year-old faced 188 balls, nine of which were dispatched to boundary. This was his 24th half-century.

Taimur Ali was unbeaten on 59 and will be joined by Kashif Bhatti (two not out) on Saturday morning when the play resumes. Taimur, to date, has faced 115 balls and hit eight fours.

Balochistan gathered only one batting point, while title defenders Central Punjab, who entered this contest after two back-to-back defeats, have pocketed two bowling points.

Scores in brief:

At UBL Sports Complex, Northern elect to bat:

Northern 319-9, 90 overs (Mohammad Nawaz 73, Hammad Azam 64, Umar Amin 62, Aamer Jamal 24; Tabish Khan 3-41, Sohail Khan 3-43, Fawad Alam 2-24)

Points to date: Northern 3, Sindh 3

At NBP Sports Complex, Southern Punjab elect to bowl (toss uncontested):

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 261-6, 93 overs (Adil Amin 90, Kamran Ghulam 64, Musadiq Ahmed 41, Zohaib Khan 23; Mohammad Abbas 4-28)

Points to date: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 2, Southern Punjab 2

At National Stadium, Central Punjab elect to field:

Balochistan 239-6, 85 overs (Ali Waqas 75, Imran Butt 53, Taimur Ali 59; Waqas Maqsood 3-47)

Points to date: Balochistan 1, Central Punjab 2

Again, not happy with QeA scores this year - we are back to squire. May be it's due to single venue being over used & PAK Internationals are missing (But, that should be balanced out as both top batsmen & bowlers are absent), but FC games should produce better batting tracks. Also, they are not enforcing teams enough to bowl full quota of overs - I see teams bowling even 93 overs a day, hence there is absolutely no excuse for ending the day with 85-86 overs.

Batting is about average, I’d love to see him focus on that more. However, might be due to not being sent up the order as well.

Amad was getting the ball to move in the NT20 as well. Bowled some peaches. Good variations as well.

Should be a part of LOI squads.

Very frustrating from him.

Apart from Talat no young batsman is raising his hand this season very dissapointing.

Hopefully he can come back. So much potential.

It’s typical pakistan management wasting talents and not giving chances when players are at their best.

Northern captain Nauman Ali recorded his career’s 14th five-wicket haul on the second day of his team’s third round first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixture against Sindh at the UBL Sports Complex.

On a day when 13 wickets fell, Sindh were bowled out for 217 in 57.3 overs as Nauman and right-arm pacer Waqas Ahmed shared nine wickets.

Nauman took five wickets for 62 runs in 20.3 overs and his scalps included top-scorer Sharjeel Khan (48), Anwar Ali (0), Sohail Khan (23), Ashiq Ali (19) and Mohammad Asghar (0). This was the slow-left arm orthodox’s second five-fer in as many matches.

Waqas, whose four wickets cost 78 runs, dismissed the bulk of the top and middle-order. With the wicket of Khurram Manzoor (six), Waqas provided his team the first breakthrough. His next three wickets were Saud Shakeel (25), Asad Shafiq (35) and Sindh captain Sarfaraz Ahmed (0).

Northern were 45 for three in their second innings and led Sindh by 156 runs when stumps were drawn.

Their openers Umair Masood (two) and Zeeshan Malik (six) were dismissed by Sohail Khan and Tabish Khan before Umar Amin followed up his fighting half-century in the first innings with a 20.

On Sunday, Sarmad Bhatti (13 not out) and Mohammad Nawaz (two not out) will resume their innings.

Northern collected a total of eight bonus first innings bonus points (three for batting and five for bowling), while Sindh managed four (one for batting and three for bowling).

Southern Punjab captain Hussain Talat third first-class century highlighted day two of his team’s match against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the National Bank Sports Complex.

The Southern Punjab captain made 131 runs to help his team close the day’s play at 257 for six in 72 overs in reply of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s 304 all out.

Hussain, who arrived at the crease at 31 for one, smashed 13 fours and six sixes. Over the course of his 180-ball stay, he stitched a crucial 148-run partnership with Mohammad Irfan, who is undefeated on 71, after Southern Punjab lost half of their batting lineup for 106 runs.

This was Hussain’s second century of the tournament – the first being his career-best 253 in the opening round against Northern.

Irfan, who has, to date, struck 10 fours and a six from 108 balls will resume Southern Punjab’s innings with Mohammad Imran on Sunday morning with a 47-run trail to surmount.

Slow-left arm orthodox Khalid Usman and off-spinner Sajid Khan took two wickets each for 58 and 64 runs, respectively.

From Southern Punjab’s first innings, both teams have gathered two bonus each.

Earlier, Mohammad Abbas, who took four wickets on the opening day of the match, picked up two wickets to register his first-class career’s 35th five-wicket haul. The Test fast-bowler returned six for 33.

Southern Punjab had Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at 278 for eight after the completion of 100 overs after they started the day at 261 for six, which got them three bonus points for bowling while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa could pocket only two.

Usman Shinwari struck three sixes in his 40-ball 22.

Title defenders Central Punjab were trailing Balochistan by 102 runs at the National Stadium.

In the match which is being broadcast and produced by the Pakistan Cricket Board, Central Punjab finished the day at 204 for six thanks to a 79-run partnership between their captain Azhar Ali and Usman Salahuddin.

The pair came together much earlier than they had anticipated as both Central Punjab openers – Ahmed Shehzad (eight) and Abid Ali (six) – were dismissed early in the innings with the scorecard reading 34.

Azhar stroked his 63 runs – the most by any batsman in the innings so far – from 147 balls, 10 of which were dispatched towards the boundary, while Usman fell six runs short of what would have been his 44th half-century at this level.

On the third morning of the match, Bilawal Iqbal (19 not out) and Ahmed Safi Abdullah (21 not out) will resume the innings for Central Punjab.

By the virtue of dismissing six Central Punjab batsmen, Balochistan, who are led by Imran Butt, have gathered two bonus points for bowling. Pacers Amad Butt and Taj Wali took two wickets each.

Earlier, a six from Kashif Bhatti on the last ball of the 100th over, helped Balochistan pocket three batting bonus points. Kashif struck four fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 55-ball 51 that lifted his team to 306 all out in 102 overs after starting the day at 239 for six.

Central Punjab’s Waqas Maqsood, Bilawal and Ahmed picked up three wickets each in the innings.

Sarfaraz Ahmed and Usman Salahuddin fined for code of conduct breaches

Karachi, 8 November 2019:

Sindh First XI captain Sarfaraz Ahmed has been fined 35 per cent match fee for a level 1 offence relating to use of inappropriate language during his side’s first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match against Northern at the UBL Sports Complex in Karachi.

The incident happened on Saturday when Sarfaraz repeatedly made inappropriate comments against an umpiring decision during the day’s play.

Sarfaraz was reported by on-field umpires Faisal Afridi and Saqib Khan for the violation of article 2.21 of the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Player support Personnel.

Sarfaraz pleaded guilty and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Mohammad Anees.

In a separate incident, Central Punjab batsman Usman Salahuddin has been fined 20 per cent match fee for a level 1 offence relating to conduct that is contrary to the spirit of the game during his side’s first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match against Balochistan at the National Stadium Karachi.

The incident happened on Saturday in the 26th over of Central Punjab’s first innings; Usman continuously showed his bat during an lbw appeal, which was deemed as an attempt to mislead the umpires.

Usman was reported by on-field umpires Ghaffar Kazmi and Nasir Hussain at the end of second day’s play for violating article 2.20 of the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Player support Personnel.

Usman pleaded guilty and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Iftikhar Ahmed.

Amazing how this former Pak captain still behaves like a child. PCB should always look at the history of players before making them captain. Sarfraz always had attitude problems and he behaved like a kid during his captaincy period which looker very poor as a Pak fan. His actions like ugly stares and foul language while live on tv were really pathetic.

Also this proves once again that his comments at Phehlukwayo were not friendly rather racist.
