Intense battles on cards as seventh round of first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy begins on Tuesday

• Southern Punjab to take on Balochistan at the National Stadium

• Table-toppers Northern to play title-defender Central Punjab; Sindh face Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Karachi, 7 December 2020:

The battle for the top two spots on the six-team points table, which will secure berths in the final, continues to heat up as the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy enters its business end with the tournament’s seventh round starting from Tuesday.

Following victories by Northern, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Central Punjab, their maiden of the season, in the sixth round, the points table has underwent a revamp of sorts.

Southern Punjab, who had been the leaders since the start of the season, slipped to third spot following a six-wicket defeat against Northern, who are now the top-ranked side.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa thrashed Balochistan, ranked fourth, by 175 runs to gather as many as 25 points and jump to the second spot. They are only six points away from the table-toppers.

It took six matches for Central Punjab, the title defenders, to record their first win of the ongoing season. But, now they have tasted a win, the Hasan Ali-led team will be hoping that it leads to a much-desired resurgence. They secured 24 points from their commanding 227-run victory against Sindh.

Central Punjab remain at the bottom of the points table, however, they have shrunk their points difference with the next best team, Sindh, to nine points.

Northern v Central Punjab at UBL Sports Complex:

The finalists of the last edition of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy will face off for the second and last time in the group stage.

Northern captain Nauman Ali led his side to a comprehensive nine-wicket win when these two teams met in the second round of the ongoing tournament. The left-arm orthodox took 11 wickets in the match, with seven of them coming in the second innings.

Central Punjab will be wary of the 34-year-old as his form has picked up since that contest. Nauman is back on top of the chart for the highest wicket-takers in the tournament with 43 scalps and has as many as four five-wicket hauls from six matches.

Hammad Azam, Umar Amin and Mohammad Nawaz provide the strength and stability to Northern’s middle-order. The three are the third, fifth and sixth best batsmen in the tournament to date in the same order.

Hammad has scored a century and six-half-centuries as he has gathered 572 runs at 71.50. Umar, who has 511 runs at 56.78, has smashed two centuries and three half-centuries, while Nawaz’s 472 runs include a century and three half-centuries.

Central Punjab are yet to find rhythm in their batting as despite the completion of six matches, none of their batsmen has hit a century in the season. However, a blistering half-century by Ahmed Safi Abdullah in their second innings against Sindh and a half-century by their captain Hasan Ali in the fifth round fixture will have Northern cautious about Central Punjab’s batting depth.

Eyes will be on Waqas Maqsood once again after he took nine wickets in the victory against Sindh, which included a first inning haul of six for 25. The left-arm pacer is leading the fast bowlers’ chart for the most wickets with 26 dismissals at 20.54 runs per wicket and is the fourth best bowler in the season.

Ahmed Safi has had an impressive season as his left-arm orthodox has garnered him 22 wickets, which place him on the fifth spot of the highest wicket-takers’ list.

That Hasan has taken eight wickets in the two matches since his return to the side is another positive for their bowling department.

Southern Punjab v Balochistan at National Stadium

The two teams enter the contest, which will be broadcast on PTV Sports in Pakistan and beamed across the globe through PCB’s YouTube channel, at the back of heavy defeats, which must have sent them back to the drawing board in the two-day gap.

For the first time in the season, Southern Punjab have been dislodged from the top-spot and they will be eager to gather maximum points from this contest. After all, they defeated Balochistan by four wickets when these two teams met earlier in the tournament.

Balochistan have pocketed only 14 points from their last two matches and since winning their tournament opener – which remains their only win in the season to date – they have drawn three matches and lost two.

The last time Balochistan’s Imran Farhat made a notable score this season was against this very opposition when he scored a brilliant first innings century and the 39-year-old would be looking forward to an opportunity to be back amongst the run-getters if he features in the playing XI.

Balochistan will be pinning their hopes on 37-year-old Akbar-ur-Rehman, who has scored 387 runs at 48.38 and hit a century and two half-centuries in the tournament so far.

Ali Waqas has been another solid batsman with three half-centuries from four matches as the left-handed batsman has gathered 345 runs in the tournament at an average of just a shade under 50.

Their pacers Taj Wali and Khurram Shehzad have enjoyed success as they have taken 20 and 18 wickets respectively. Both bowlers have recorded a five-wicket haul each in the tournament. Taj is placed sixth on the highest wicket-takers list for the tournament and Khurram is at eighth.

Southern Punjab’s Zahid Mehmood has played a vital role in his side’s success throughout the season as the leg-spinner has taken 37 wickets at an average of 22.95. The 33-year-old Dadu-born has two five-wicket hauls in the tournament and is the only bowler from his side to be amongst the top 10 wicket-takers in the tournament.

Salman Ali Agha has been a revelation with the bat as the middle-order batsman continues to score runs. He has the most runs in the tournament as he has accumulated 600 runs at a staggering average of 75, which is the highest amongst the top-five run-getters in the season.

The 27-year-old has smashed a century and four half-centuries in the first six rounds and his captain Umar Siddiq will be hoping that his run of form continues as Salman scored 97 and 42 not out when these two sides met earlier.

Umar, himself, has been the other notable run-getter for Southern Punjab with 469 runs from six matches, which include four half-centuries. The 28-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman is the seventh best run-getter this season.

Sindh v Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at State Bank Stadium

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa enter the contest with an astounding 175-run win against Balochistan and are one of the two sides – other being Northern – to have won three out of six matches.

Their victory was built around impressive first innings century from Kamran Ghulam and a remarkable display of pace bowling from the trio of Sameen Gul, Irfanullah Shah and Mohammad Wasim Jnr.

That Kamran’s 153 came in an innings in which the next best score was 58 and the team posted 320 all out augurs well for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa batting department as the middle-order batsman has picked up form in the most crucial stage of the tournament.

He is the latest batsman to be amongst run-getters after openers Israrullah and Musadiq Ahmed, Adil Amin and Khalid Usman.

For the most part of the tournament, Sajid Khan, the off-spinner, has carried the weight of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s bowling. His impressive form has seen him placed at the second spot in the list of highest wicket-takers with 38 scalps – which include three five-wicket hauls.

Following an outstanding outing in the sixth round, he looks all set to receive the much-desired support from the pacers.

Sindh find themselves placed fifth and only nine points ahead of the bottom-placed Central Punjab. The Asad Shafiq-led side will be eager to rack up maximum points from this contest.

Sharjeel Khan scored a fighting second innings 89 in the last match and Sindh will be hoping that the left-handed opener provides them solid starts following which Saud Shakeel, the second best batsman in the tournament with 588 runs at 53.45, Omair Bin Yousuf (382 runs, two centuries) and Asad (370 runs, one century and one half-century).

Following their promotions to the First XI side, pacer Shahnawaz Dhani and leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed have made a mark with their impressive performances. Shahnawaz has taken 12 wickets in three matches, while Abrar has dimissed 13 batsmen in as many matches.

Tabish Khan continues to be a daunting proposition for the batsmen. The 36-year-old pacer has 19 wickets from six matches and Asad will rely on his to provide crucial breakthroughs.

Northern vs Central Punjab will be interesting. Both were finalists this year with CP winning, but now Northern is top of the table and CP at the bottom. However, CP also has a renewed sense of momentum after winning their first match of the tournament.

4 games, lets say he plays 7 innings if the follow on is enforced or whatever reason. With the form he's in he should definitely get one ton and hopefully that gives him the confidence to get another. He seems like a confidence and clutch player to me so it being the latter and crucial half of the tournament should help him.

True good point.

And could be another game in the final.

I hope he scores 2 tons.

Hoping for Saud to score tons of runs, needs to make it impossible not to pick him for SA home tests.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are bowling first against Sindh in their Round 7 match of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy (no toss)

I love the rivalry between Central Punjab and Northern. It’s always a cracker of a game. CP needs to win almost all of their remaining matches since they’re on the bottom of the points table, and Northern was at the top. You’d expect it to be one-sided in favor of Northern but it’s anything but with Hassan Ali, Bilawal Iqbal, and Waqas Maqsood leading the charge.

Very interested in seeing how Northern fight back from here.

Hasan Ali is the sole reason for their turnaround. He is bowling beautifully.

Saif Badar disappoints once again. I have seen a poster calling him a more explosive and better Babar Azam. Safe to say that poster is a massive over-hyper. Badar needs to churn out hundreds soon. Or else with an Avg of 30, there are much better batsmen who would take his place in the First 11. Let alone the National Team. Pretty 50-60s every two games arent doing him any favor.

Got run out, so to be fair can’t really count it as a batting failure. But yeah, Saif really needs to step up.

Also, that poster might hype players a lot but he does an excellent job mainstreaming lots of talents who don’t get chances and bringing them into the limelight. He backs Saif because Badar has some clutch performances in pressure situations such as the one against India in the emerging Asia semifinal.

At a certain point though, there is no one to blame but Saif himself.

All the youngsters have disappointed in this round so far. Hopefully Ali Zaryab steps up tomorrow against Northern.

Well, I would agree with you, however, I have seen the same poster only hype the Players that he mainstreams and call the others ordinary in other threads. And I have seen most of these youngsters been called "better than Babar" and that is too high a pedestal to put some rookie in PCT.

As for Babar, at the end of the day, it's the numbers that count. And at the moment Hammad Azam is playing at an avg of above 70 at number 7. Saif has no excuse. He needs to show more temperament on the crease. Lookin at him bat you get the feeling that he is in a hurry.

Is Irfanullah Shah the lanky fast bowler from the under 19 world Cup a few years ago?

Looks like Yamin got it to swing again with the new ball. 3-4 in his initial four overs, picking the top order.

Shadab Majeed is another young 23 year old pacer who has been promoted by Northern from 2nd xi.

If it refers to me, I am just following progress of a talented youngster, and list includes few other youngsters. It shouldn't be termed as Hype. I believe Saif Badar has the skills and also said that skills alone, without temperament (and development), aren't going to make him a star. So far, I am not sure about his temperament. Some youngsters fail to understand and develop their game. I don't know if he will progress or regress, but for the time being I will continue to follow Saif Badar.

Bowlers set the stage for three more results in the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy when 34 wickets fell on the opening day of the seventh round fixtures, which commenced here in Karachi.

Irfanullah Shah took five for 33 and Sajid Khan grabbed three for 66 to justify Khyber Pakhtunkhwa captain Khalid Usman’s decision to take the option of bowling first at the State Bank Stadium when they combined to bowl out fifth-placed Sindh for 229 inside 82 overs.

Asad Shafiq was Sindh’s top-scorer with a 111-ball 60 with nine fours, while opener Sharjeel Khan slapped nine fours and a six in a 78-ball 57.

When play ended early due to fading light, second-placed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had reached five for no loss.

At the UBL Sports Complex, Hasan Ali continued to impress with his fitness when he inspired bottom-placed Central Punjab to dismiss leaders Northern for 243 in 57 overs.

Hasan Ali, who has missed international cricket this calendar year due to injuries, returned figures of 15-2-48-4 and was well supported by Bilawal Iqbal (three for 91) and Ahmed Safi Abdullah (two for 31).

After electing to bat first and slipping to 63 for five, Northern were first rescued by a 97-run sixth wicket stand between Mohammad Nawaz (50, 6x4, 97b) and Hammad Azam (47) before Asif Ali’s whirlwind 39-ball 72 knock, comprising nine fours and five sixes, lifted Northern to 243.

At the draw of stumps, Central Punjab had reached 49 for no loss from 23 overs.

In front of the broadcast cameras at the National Stadium, 14 wickets fell on day one of the four-day match between third-placed Southern Punjab and fourth-placed Balochistan.

Electing to bat first, a 62-run last-wicket partnership between Zahid Mahmood (45) and Zia-ul-Haq (16 not out) carried Southern Punjab from 194 for nine to 256 all out in 79.5 overs with other notable contributions coming from Salman Ali Agha (50) and Zain Abbas (40).

Wickets were evenly shared between Balochistan bowlers Taj Wali (three for 66), Umaid Asif (two for 35), Jalat Khan (two for 64) and Kashif Bhatti (two for 90).

However, Southern Punjab hit back hard when Aamir Yamin produced a sensational last-session spell to leave Balochistan tottering at 16 for four. Aamir grabbed three for four in four overs, while Mohammad Ilyas picked up one wicket.

Scores in brief (day 1 of four, round seven)

At State Bank Stadium, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa elected to bowl (toss uncontested) against Sindh

Points to date: Sindh 1 (batting), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 5 (all bowling)

At UBL Sports Complex, Northern won the toss against Central Punjab and elected to bat first

Northern 243 all out, 57 overs (Asif Ali 72, Mohammad Nawaz 50, Hammad Azam 47, Umar Amin 29; Hasan Ali 4-48, Bilawal Iqbal 3-91, Ahmed Safi Abdullah 2-31)

Central Punjab 49-0, 23 overs

Points to date: Northern 1 (batting), Central Punjab 5 (all bowling)

At the National Stadium, Southern Punjab won the toss and elected to bat first against Balochistan

Southern Punjab 256 all out, 79.5 overs (Salman Ali Agha 50, Zahid Mahmood 45, Zain Abbas 40, Saif Babar 24, Mohammad Imran 24; Taj Wali 3-66, Umaid Asif 2-35, Jalat Khan 2-64, Kashif Bhatti 2-90)

Balochistan 16-4, 7.2 overs (Aamir Yamin 3-4)

Points to date: Southern Punjab 3 (two batting, one bowling), Balochistan 4 (all bowling)

Excellent, we need Hasan Ali for test matches specifically, and perhaps ODI cricket if he is fit enough to play both formats.

This is what we need, 10/15 accurate, economic overs to rest the three quicks.

Central Punjab has been so disappointing. They had Northern’s first 5 wickets for 58, and then let them get to 243. Then they got bundled out for 234!

when you have guys like saad nasim playing in 6 teams syatem , you deserve this.

Northern’s left-arm spinner Nauman Ali registered his 17th career five-fer, fast bowler Aamer Yamin of Southern Punjab recorded his seventh five-fer in his 50th first-class match and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s top-order batsman Kamran Ghulam stroked an unbeaten century as first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy seventh round fixtures entered into an interesting phase after second day’s play on Wednesday.

34-year-old Nauman returned figures of 24-3-84-7 to help Northern dismiss Central Punjab for 234 and grab a slender but a confidence-boosting nine runs first innings lead. When play ended at the UBL Sports Complex, Northern had reached 77 for two in their second outing to extend their advantage to 86 runs.

Central Punjab, replying to Northern’s 243, were comfortably placed at 150 for three, before Nauman ran riot to spin out the middle and lower-order as he turned almost unplayable. By virtue of claiming seven wickets, Nauman became the first bowler to take 50 wickets in the season.

For Central Punjab, openers Muhammad Akhlaq and Ali Zaryab were the notable run-scorers. Akhlaq scored 67 with seven fours and two sixes from 121 balls, while Ali contributed 45 off 122 balls with six fours.

In front of the broadcast cameras at the National Stadium, Aamir Yamin celebrated his 50th first-class match with figures of 14-3-47-6 as Balochistan were bundled out for 164 in reply to Southern Punjab’s 256.

After securing 92-run first innings lead, Southern Punjab had put a stranglehold over Balochistan by reaching 149 for two at the close of play. Imran Rafiq (60) and Saif Badar (41) will resume Southern Punjab’s second innings on Thursday.

30-year-old Aamir Yamin, who had taken three of the four Balochistan wickets to fall in the short final session on Tuesday, continued to maintain his nagging line and length. He was well supported by the fielders who enabled him to secure his seventh five-fer since making his debut 11 years ago.

Balochistan, who had resumed the day at the overnight score of 16 for four, were rescued by left-handed Ayaz Tasawar, whose gutsy and fighting knock was ended by a beauty from wrist spinner Zahid Mahmood. No.7 batsman Ayaz scored 76 that came off 97 balls and included 10 fours and a six.

Together with Bismillah Khan (24), Ayaz added 48 runs for the seventh wicket after Balochistan had plunged to 65 for six and then added 31 priceless runs for the ninth wicket with Jalat Khan (20).

25-year-old Kamran Ghulam stroked his sixth first-class century to help Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reach 260 for four in reply to Sindh’s 229 at the State Bank Stadium.

Kamran has struck 13 fours to date in a 241-ball innings and has added 50 runs for the unfinished fifth wicket with Rehan Afridi (30 not out). Prior to this, Kamran had put on 143 runs for the third wicket with Fakhar Zaman (62, 8x4, 139b) after his side was in some bother at 20 for two.

Enjoying the highlights, very competitive cricket. Shame Balochistan don't have Akif Javed with them, they need to skittle SP out early tomorrow otherwise they're facing another loss.

Northern look in a strong position after a CP collapse caused by Nauman Ali. Kamran Ghulam seems reborn as a specialist bat for KPK this season.

Needs to stop declining singles :facepalm

Honestly I think the ship has sailed on him for this season. This was potentially the last televized game. Unless he scores a 150 next match, even 100 will be disappointing.

Needs to come back next season with full intent and stronger than ever. Would also do well to have a killer list A season given our lack of options in the middle order aside from Khushdil and Iftikhar.

I think LOIs are his best bet. But for ODIs too, I think we should warrant a strong FC showing. We have suffered big time just picking ODI players and the on the based of T20s alone. Asif, Faheem come to mind and now we have made the same mistake with Khushdil. I don't see him lasting in ODI's given the multiple weaknesses in his batting. Short ball, any movement and an almost total lack of an offside game. Even Shadab got better after he worked hard on his batting, he was struggling before that. Still hasn't done anything of note with the bat apart from a few test innings. International cricket is brutal and you get found out pretty fast if you aren't good.

For Saif at the moment, he shouldn't be anywhere near the national team in any format. Unless he has a really expectional season next year around, he needs atleast two great seasons to be in contention for the test team. T20's you could go in based of a good PSL and that's okay. But not anything more than T20s.

How many did Hassan grab during northern 2nd innings?

Hassan Ali took 3, Ahmed Safi Abdullah took 4.

Also, what a cracker of a game this is turning out to be. After CP dominating day 1, Northern dominated day 2 to take the advantage, and now CP made an excellent comeback on day 3 led by Safi. I reckon CP can win the entire thing easily if they bat sensibly.

Central Punjab and Northern - I think it can potentially be the first proper rivalry of this new 6 team structure.

Close of play update - first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy - Day 3

Bottom-placed Central Punjab came back from behind to defeat leaders Northern by six wickets with more than a day to spare while Southern Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were also sensing victories in their matches against Balochistan and Sindh, respectively, after third day’s play in the seventh round of first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy fixtures on Thursday.

After conceding a slender nine-run first innings lead, defending champions Central Punjab bounced back to dismiss Northern for 156 runs in their second innings and then reached the 166-run target for the loss of four wickets in the final session of the penultimate day’s play.

Mohammad Saad hit an unbeaten 50 (7x4, 81 balls) and Qasim Akram remained 23 not out as the two batsmen added 50 runs for the unfinished fifth wicket after Central Punjab had slipped to 116 for four.

Northern captain and left-arm spinner Nauman Ali was once again the destroyer-in-chief of Central Punjab’s innings when he followed up his seven for 84 with four for 69 to finish with match figures of 11 for 153 – his fifth 10-wicket haul in a match in a 76-match career.

Earlier, Northern had resumed their second innings at the overnight score of 77 for two and were dismissed for 156 with Ahmed Safi Abdullah claiming four for 46 and Hasan Ali grabbing three for 30. Ahmed rounded up the match with six wickets for 77 and Hasan finished with seven wickets for 78.

Victory meant Central Punjab collected 22 points from this match, which has lifted them from 54 points to 76 points. In contrast, Northern has earned sixth points and have now moved to 104 points.

A career-best 166 by Kamran Ghulam has put Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in a commanding position against Sindh. The 25-year-old’s 438-minute innings during which he received 295 balls off which 19 were converted into boundaries allowed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to reach 414 all-out after starting the day at 260 for four.

Sindh, who could muster only 229 in their first innings, had reached 120 for five when stumps were drawn and required another 65 runs to make Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bat again.

Opener Sharjeel Khan scored his second half-century of the match as he made 51 off 61, which included four fours and three sixes, while Saud Shakeel was unbeaten on 50.

Saud struck six fours from the 70 balls he has faced to date.

Kamran had started the day at 124 not out and added another 42 runs to his overnight score. He featured in a 129-run fifth partnership with Rehan Afridi, who was dismissed after scoring 87 from 123 balls with eight fours and three sixes. Kamran then added another 44 runs with Khalid Usman (25).

For Sindh, Mir Hamza and Tabish Khan equally shared six wickets, conceding 89 and 104 runs, respectively.

At the National Stadium and in front of the broadcast cameras, Southern Punjab’s opener Imran Rafiq and Balochistan spinner Jalat Khan dominated the third day’s proceedings.

Southern Punjab, with a 92-run first innings lead in hand and resuming the day at 149 for two, were dismissed after scoring 312. Their second innings was dominated by Imran Rafiq, who was unlucky to miss his fourth career century when he was dismissed for 97. He had started the day at 60 and his 217-ball innings included seven fours and a six.

Saif Badar began the day at 41 and was dismissed after scoring 53, while Mohammad Umair contributed a 101-ball 59 with five fours.

The star of Balochistan’s innings was Jalat Khan, who returned figures of 25.5-4-76-5, his sixth career five-fer, to finish the match with seven for 140.

Chasing an improbable 405 runs for victory, Balochistan finished the day at 112 for two with Imran Farhat (63) and Akbar-ur-Rehman (29) at the crease. Aamer Yamin took both Balochistan wickets as the pacer followed up his outstanding six for 47 in the first innings with two for 33.

When play will resume on Friday, Balochistan will require 293 runs for victory, while Southern Punjab will need eight wickets.
