Saqlain Mushtaq speaking during a TV show:
“I want to explain this same idea in a slightly different way, by giving different examples. Four types of organizations or individuals rise to the top. First type: The intelligent and brave. As intelligence increases, bravery also grows alongside it. The percentage here means that the more knowledge you gain, the more educated you become, the more aware you are of conditions and situations, the more intelligence and courage you will have. Look at New Zealand’s team, look at England’s team, look at South Africa’s team. They played intelligent cricket and courageous cricket. That is the top category: intelligent and brave. Second type: Less intelligent, less brave. Here, the percentage of intelligence is lower, and as a result, bravery also decreases. They drift towards weakness, and their ranking falls. Third type: Intelligent but timid. This group has intelligence, but on that particular day, they lack bravery. They think, they plan, but they don’t execute boldly. Fourth type: Foolish and dull. This is the lowest category. They have no intelligence, they are heavy and sluggish, and they lack courage.”
“To reach the top, knowledge is absolutely essential. You must understand everything. Knowledge will give you awareness, belief, bravery, and proactivity. It will let you know the whole picture. This system can work only if you educate children from the grassroots level, if you develop them from the bottom up. That is how educated cricket is played. We, unfortunately, play uneducated cricket.”
“I am not saying this out of arrogance, because I have coached all over the world. If I ask a player here, “What is your plan for tomorrow?” he won’t be able to answer. He’ll just place ten fielders randomly and say, “This is my field position.” But if you ask children in those developed systems, they will give you ten pages of planning. They will explain how they will start, what research they did, what the opposition is like, what conditions are expected, how they will adjust, how they will attack, and how they will defend. They will give you a complete plan. In our system, to fix things, we must bring proper structure.”
