JOHANNESBURG: The Cricket South Africa (CSA) Board on Monday evening unanimously agreed to issue a directive requiring all Proteas players to adopt a consistent and united stance against racism by “taking the knee” prior to the start of their remaining World Cup matches.

Concerns were raised that the different postures taken by team members in support of the BLM initiative created an unintended perception of disparity or lack of support for the initiative.

After considering all relevant issues, including the position of the players, the Board felt that it was imperative for the team to be seen taking a united and consistent stand against racism, especially given SA’s history.

Several other teams at the World Cup have adopted a consistent stance against the issue, and the Board felt it is time for all SA players to do the same.

“Taking the knee” is the global gesture against racism adopted by sportspeople across sporting codes because they recognise the power sport has to bring people together.

CSA Board Chairperson, Lawson Naidoo said: “A commitment to overcoming racism is the glue that should unite, bind and strengthen us. Race should not be manipulated to amplify our weaknesses. Diversity can and should find expression in many facets of our daily lives, but not when it comes to taking a stand against racism.”

“South Africans were recently joined by people across the world in celebrating the 90th birthday of our revered Archbishop Desmond Tutu. What better tribute from the Proteas to an icon of the struggle for freedom in South Africa than to demonstrate we are working to fulfil his vision of a united South Africa,” he says.

Cricket is the second most watched sport globally and the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, being held in the UAE and Oman, is the ideal platform for the Proteas to highlight the national resolve to heal the divisions of the past.

The CSA Board is actively promoting a holistic transformation strategy that embraces the diversity with which SA has been blessed.

CSA believes success both on the field and beyond the boundary will be guaranteed if all South Africans stand united to build a new innings based on the pillars of inclusivity, access and excellence.

That was a stupid thing to do by CSA. But painting white South Africans as oppressed is quite an ignorant thing for you to do. Especially given South Africa's history. The damage that apartheid has done to South Africa is felt to this day in all stratas of society in what is regarded by many as 'the most unequal country in the world'. If you know this in your heart then I don't see a problem with taking the knee. Couple of issues:

1.Symbolic stands and gestures only have meaning if they are genuine. Taking the knee because you are told to do so, and not because you want to show solidarity to black people who suffer from systemic racism all over the world, is not the same as doing it because you really want to. So if you are taking the knee but in your head thinking 'this is nonsense', then it renders the whole thing ludicrous. So I'd rather you didn't frankly.

2. It is a fact that black people (and other people of colour) suffer from systemic institutional racism and discrimination all over the world. We are taking the knee to keep this fact in the spotlight because the more people think about it and the more people are reminded of it, the better chance there is of it being fixed. Otherwise we just carry on as we have been and that is unacceptable.

Otherwise totally agree that given South Africa's history - in living memory - where the legacy and effects of apartheid are still being felt in that country - it is as incredibly childish and immature stance by De Kock. But he is entitled to be childish and immature.

I may not believe in a political ideology that my team mates believe in. BLM is a political movement.

Quinny probably has some racist pro apartheid feelings that make him not want to take the knee.

This is an incredibly controversial stance to take while in South African colours.

He clearly had no interest in playing for his country and now he is showing he has no interest in the feelings of his countrymen either.

However de Kock not opposed to making gestures on the field - he once made a Save The Rhino gesture.

I feel for South Africa as a country as I can relate a lot to the tensions within their nation. The rainbow nation is one of the few countries that has a similar level of diversity as India, and diversity almost always brings divisions. It's a bit sad to see the inter community tensions running high in their country. Whenever I read about them in the news, I'm always remembered of how similar India and South Africa are, in having a divided society, which is kinda sad.

It was against black opposition too. No matter what you think of taking the knee, QDK feeling the need to protest in this manner against the Windies doesn't reflect well on him.

Quite a nonsensical decision from Quinny and it looked like the team didn't feel his absence too much anyway.
