Former India captain Rahul Dravid will continue as coach of the India A and U-19 teams for the next two years, Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed on Friday. The Indian Express reported on June 20, 2017 that Dravid is set to continue and no fresh applications will be invited.

India ‘A’ squads for the tour of South Africa were announced on Thursday and Karun Nair and Manish Pandey were appointed skippers of four-day and limited-overs teams respectively. India U-19 and India ‘A’ matches are set to clash and it remains to be seen which team Dravid travels with. India U-19 are set tour England in July while the ‘A’ team plays the first game in South Africa on July 26.

Delhi Daredevils in their press release confirmed that the former Indian skipper will no longer mentor the IPL franchise as he looks to concentrate on serving as India A head coach.

“It was an honour and privilege to have Rahul Dravid as Mentor of the Delhi Daredevils over the last two years. We truly enjoyed our association and nurtured some great young talent together. We are sad that he will not continue with us as Mentor as he chooses to serve India A as a coach. Being a true servant of Cricket he believes he still has a lot to give back to the game and help nurture young India talent. We wish him all the best.”

It was decided that there would be no open interview process and call for applications from interested candidates as originally planned. According to a BCCI official, a clause in the existing contract of Dravid allowed the Indian cricket board to extend his tenure without calling for fresh interviews.

Only someone like Dravid would. The likes of Tendulkar would never do anything to give back to the game. He is busy promoting the mumbai lobby.

India need their resourceful individuals who actually contributed immensely to Indian cricket, Dravid is that man.

Lucky DD..won't be having a coach/mentor next ssn who takes some horrendous decisions. Dravid messed up DD quite badly in last 2 editions with some absolutely pathetic choices. He

Statement by DD.

This is the need of the hour from folks like Misbah who can contribute to the u19 and A teams rather than sitting on talk shows and adopting a holier-than-thou attitude when he himself didn't do as captain what he is asking of Sarfaraz.

What a senseless recommendation. Why the rule that one needs to coach for the whole year when he is needed for only 10 months as every Indian u19 player would be playing IPL during those two months. As a result of this, Dravid is losing on making some extra money. Mickey is also the coach of Pakistan and a PSL team. Why are Dravid and others compelled not to?

Says a Tendulkar fan , typical !!
What has this got to do with what I said?? Anyone who followed IPL closely this ssn knows about horrendous decisions which DD management took. They could have been in playoffs if not for those stupid decisions. btw, I love Dravid too

This is beautiful. Lucky under 19 players who have a legend that will teach them!

Huge respect for THE WALL.

Great learning curve for the wall as well as I think he is eventually going to be with the national team.

As far as the U19 guys are concerned I think this is massive for them.To learn from the best and getting to know about the game from someone who has played it with utmost dedication and passion is absolute gold.It must be something to ponder upon as far as Pakistani counterparts are concerned who will just bad mouth their own players rather than doing anything practical on the field.

Good call. It would have been a travesty had Dravid picked some IPL team over the U-19s.

Sounds good on paper that he put country before IPL etc etc.
But most of u-19 players will be in IPL teams. So basically vacation time for RD.
Financially I am sure BCCI pays him well so if he misses out in IPL pay its like instead of 2 million a year he will make 1.5 million.
He will probably make up by that money by doing match analysis on some TV channel during IPL.

He was getting 4 crores as coach previously and was earning the same amount from IPL. Bcci have agreed to increase his salary to compensate a little for the loss of earnings but he will still earn less than what he was earning before because the salary of under 19 coach can't be more than the coach of senior team.

And he won't be able to take the role of commentator whilst he is coaching.

It's conflict of interest because he can select the players of his franchise for A tours and under 19 team.

Not going to spoil the party as I am a fan of RD. But, looking at DDD team & RD's impact in last 2 years, may be it's not so straight & patriotic after all :( For 10 weeks, none needs to leave his coaching post in IND - even Indian national coach can have a part time job in IPL, because every other cricket stops there.

Not sure - is the Indian U19 Coach, U19 chief selector as well?

Even if he has no selection capacity - there is always the possibility that he could favour certain players who belong to his franchise.

There is a clear potential conflict. So better that they deal with it.

And Dravid will get compensated for the loss of revenue by the BCCI, so not such a big sacrifice from the man.

I presumed, hence it's not that straight.

It was Dravid who recommended Pandya and Nair be selected in the indian test team after the duo peformed well in the A series against SA and Aus.

I believe Dravid's input is taken by the selectors before drafting players into the senior team. If he openly endorses players who happen to be from his franchise, murmurs could start about Dravid showing favouritsm.

For Dravid it might not be conflict of interest but its a bad precedent if it were to move forward,so good call. Also even in IPL he has selected many youngsters,so its better he can stick to U-19 and help IPL/Ranji teams to scout youngsters and develop them accordingly.

BCCI pays well, one can't compare this to Pakistani legends as we have no idea the difference in pay, plus Dravid would be a boring host, although he was good when commentating with Nasser in WC 15 :P

What had your post got to do with topic ? is anyone asking here how well he did with DD ?

its typical of Tendulkar fans to burn when anything good is said about other Indian players be it Dravid , Dhoni or these days Virat .

Huge respect. Probably the most sensible ex-Indian cricketer who knows what he's doing and wants the betterment of Indian cricket.

I wonder who is the first poster who brought Tendulkar in this thread for no reason? Kindly read his post.

Dude...the title of the thread says he chose U-19 over DD. In my first post, I said its a good thing for DD that Dravid will no longer be their coach/mentor. I said about his previous coaching stint. How is my first post not relevant to topic??
It was you who brought all Sachin fans angle into this and you are saying I am burning lol what is there to even burn about here

He had a calm and sensible head on his shoulders during his playing days so it is good to see he stil has it and knows how to differentiate between donkeys and horses.

True - although more money is to be made in IPL. He will gain a lot more by coaching the U19 team.
