ISLAMABAD: In its ongoing drive to repair, renovate and reconstruct stations of Pakistan Railways, the PML-N led federal government has so far remained focused mainly on Lahore division where it spent Rs324.507 million out of the total funds of Rs451.256 million.

The state-run railway consists of eight territorial operating divisions – Gwadar, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar, Quetta, Rawalpindi and Sukkur.

In response to a question of a legislator, the government on Thursday told the National Assembly that a sum of Rs451.256 million was spent on maintenance of rail stations in five divisions during the current government’s term.

However, the total amount spent on the maintenance of rail stations in Lahore division – the prime minister’s hometown – account for a massive 71.91% of the total funds. While total amount spent on just three divisions of Punjab is Rs438.445m which is 97.161% of the total funds spent.

The largest share of the funds – Rs324 million – was spent on the stations of Lahore division, where 16 railway stations were renovated, repaired or reconstructed. In Multan division another Rs89.261 million were spent on the maintenance of eight stations.

This is not about the number but the unfair treatment. KP was the only province to recover most of the railway land and hand it over back to Pak railway but this is how they pay you back?

Pakistan Railways announces fare hike starting Dec 1

In a bid to navigate economic challenges and address the impact of fuel price fluctuations, Pakistan Railways has officially announced a 5% increase in fares across all train categories, effective December 1.

This marks the third adjustment in the past three months, bringing the cumulative rise to 25%.

The decision to raise fares comes as a response to the considerable surge in petrol and diesel prices, with the last adjustment occurring in September. At that time, passenger train fares were increased, setting the stage for a series of subsequent changes.

The 5% fare hike applies uniformly to shuttles, passenger trains, express services, and freight transportation, impacting the entire spectrum of railway services.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Railways, citing the necessity for periodic adjustments, emphasized the ongoing challenges faced by Pakistan Railways in maintaining operational sustainability amid economic uncertainties.

The recent adjustments follow a pattern initiated on August 10, when fares were raised by 10%, and a subsequent 2% increase in September.

Passengers are urged to adapt to these shifts in the cost structure of railway services, with the cumulative 25% increase underscoring the broader economic context in which Pakistan Railways operates.

They know winter vacations are coming and since many people will be traveling, it's the perfect time for Pak Railway to rip off their passengers with excessive fares.

PR to restore two more passenger trains

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Railways has decided to restore two more passenger trains from Quetta to Karachi and Quetta to Lahore to facilitate the passengers of the routes.

“The decision to restore trains including Bolan Mail and Akbar Bugti Express has been taken on the directions of the caretaker government,” an official in the Ministry of Railways told APP.

The official said that the Bolan Mail would resume its operations by the end of December this year, while Akbar Bugti Express would be restored in March next year.

He said the two trains would facilitate the people of Sindh and Punjab provinces to travel to Balochistan and vice versa. Currently, the Jaffer Express is the only operational passenger train in Balochistan being run between Quetta - Peshawar, besides local Chaman and Hurnai trains.

About the Bolan Mail, the official said the train would consist of 12 coaches with the facility of a dining car and bedding. The passengers would also be provided clean blankets, pillows and standard food, he added.

It is pertinent to mention here that, in October last, the department had restored train services at Sibi-Harnai section which was suspended 18 years ago after the miscreants destroyed main bridges and railway tracks in the year 2006.

Railway fares decreased by over 50%

In view of the recent decline in diesel prices, the Pakistan Railways Department has announced a significant reduction in train fares across various classes. The official notification regarding the fare reduction has been issued and is effective immediately.

The fare reduction applies to train journeys ranging from one to 200 kilometres for all classes of trains, benefitting passengers travelling shorter distances. The most notable reductions are seen in the economy and AC classes.

According to the railway authorities, the economy class fares on certain routes have been reduced by up to 54%. For instance, the minimum fare for the economy class on the Lahore to Rawalpindi route has decreased from Rs250 to Rs100. Similarly, the economy class fare for the Khyber Mail, covering distances from 1km to 130km, has also been reduced from Rs250 to Rs100.

Passengers travelling in AC class will also enjoy a significant reduction, with fares cut by 40% across various routes.

This move comes as a relief to daily commuters and occasional travellers alike, who will benefit from the lowered cost of train travel. The Railways Department emphasizes that this fare reduction aims to pass on the benefits of decreased fuel costs to the public and make rail travel more affordable.

The implementation of these new fares has started on Tuesday, as confirmed by the railway authorities in Lahore.

For more detailed information about the specific fare reductions and to plan your journey, passengers are encouraged to check the official Railways website.
