The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ramiz Raja has sanctioned one million rupees for the national team head coach Saqlain Mushtaq's knee treatment. According to a report in the 'Daily Jang' newspaper, Ramiz decided to release the amount immediately after the national team doctor Najeeb Soomro sent in a request to him that one million rupees be provided for the treatment of a chronic knee problem that Saqlain had been facing for a while now. The amount was sought while the team was in the Netherlands recently for an ODI series and where Saqlain sought some treatment.

The report said that Saqlain who was appointed as head coach earlier this week, after an interim period, had been complaining of knee pain.

"What is different about this case is the way the amount was fast tracked for Saqlain's treatment," one reliable source said.

He said that normally the PCB did provide medical cover to its contracted players and employees but funds were released through a proper procedure.

"But in this case Ramiz made an exception as Saqlain had been complaining about his knee problem for a while and because the team doctor recommended the amount be released," the source said.

Interestingly Saqlain, 45, who played 49 Tests and 169 ODIs for Pakistan for a total of 496 international wickets, also saw his career end because of a knee injury.

Saqlain has been in the limelight in the last few days because of his comments made at press conferences which have left people bemused.

Not sure how he got that injury? or is this the old one? Is this as per his contract or some special favour?

Is he being considered as a replacement for Usman Qadir? Saqlain should have refused this money judging from the appearance he keeps.

Not only is this very welcome news, it needs to be standard for all our current pros and former legends.

I wonder if it was agreed as part of his contract when he was appointed head coach.

He's had that knee problem for many years and I'm surprised it wasn't sorted out earlier.

if the pcb had looked after him when his issues started he would have ended up as an ATG, as it is Rs. 1 million is a tiny amount, like $4000 or so, so its not a big issue.

the CEO approving it sends a dangerous precedent however, wish things in pak could be more systemic, rather than ad-hoc, whether its right or wrong.

PCB have clarified:

It is completely irrelevant for the PCB whether a player or support staff on national duty has medical coverage or not. Priority for any caring organisation like the PCB is to provide him/her best medical treatment and look after his wellbeing, and that’s precisely what the PCB has done in Saqlain Mushtaq’s case.

That sounds very unprofessional - and an attempt to appear benevolent.

All these things should be covered by a policy book. And anyone who gets contracted should get automatic coverage, if that's PCBs intention. Otherwise, these kind of statements seem to be made on the fly - depending on the benevolence/friendship of PCB chairman.

PCB is obviously trying hard to appear in control after the Shaheen Afridi fiasco.

This is an employee getting taken care of by his employer. None-news.

The news has been deliberately leaked by PCB after Shaheen saga

Or maybe leaked by someone inside PCB who wants Rambo's friend to be removed as a coach. Language of the article shows that.

The source in the article itself mentions that "He said that normally the PCB did provide medical cover to its contracted players and employees".

Not sure what the issue is then

Looks like anti and pro-Saqlain bodies at work at the Board.

Saqlain once cried in a Pakpassion interview about being hurt and resentful over being mistreated by the PCB who ignored him and left him on his own after his knee injuries and didn't bother to follow up on him afterwards in utter disregard for his performances for Pakistan.

The PCB has done well to make amends with him by giving him various opportunities at the NHPC, national team coach etc.

I think he can now say everything is even and square now.

Whats wrong with this? Employee has an injury getting in way of work and gets some sort of workers comp, this is perfectly fine.

Why Saqlain is an employee is a different question.

TBH, that does sound like a genuine reason to be aggrieved about it rather than just any old crying.

Maybe this is saqlain getting his pay off in early fix my knees because the inevitable knives will most likely be out for him to be sacked when our batting gets exposed down under in t20 world cup.

Shame they didn't bother fixing Haris Sohail's knees, that would have benefitted the team immensely.

Its a pre-existing condition and why PCB spending public money on that , not sure . Saqi was not a poor man , why he did not take care of himself for so many year, just ridiculous , particular if he had earned all or most of his money from cricket.

And, he cannot blame being so much out of shape on his knee problem , there are so many ways to keep yourself fit even with knee problem .

Being so fat won't help anyone's knee's. Saqi needs to lose a lot of weight first. He's about to explode!.

Yes absolutely. My employer take cares of even my phone bill. Super cushy perks and here people are surprisingly having a cry about someone utilizing their health perks. Clearly, most of the people here have never worked in corporate.

As per sources, Saqlain picked up the knee injury while training the national players.

Same here I get freephone with contract sim and will be getting laptop soon.

FGS, we all have been hearing Saqi has put on so much weight over last 10 years due to knee problem , its not a new "injury".

PKR 1-million is actually not that much (less than $10,000 USD).

May Saqlain get well soon.
