From the fun tennis-ball mohalla matches involving friends and elder brother Taiyyab, to the more high-profile under-14 affairs, Abdul Samad was steadfast in his obsession. He hit the second century of the Ranji season which took his team to an innings win.Abdul Samad, 18, is an unabashed Rohit Sharma fan. While growing up in Kalakote village in Jammu, the youngster was consumed by the passion to bat like India’s second most-popular cricketer. From the fun tennis-ball mohalla matches involving friends and elder brother Taiyyab, to the more high-profile under-14 affairs, the youngster was steadfast in his obsession. He would devour all the India matches on television, and then shadow practice in front of his mirror at home, all in a bid to bat like his idol.

These days, however, Samad’s batting hardly displays flashes of Sharma. Instead, his batsmanship seems to be carved straight out of Prithvi Shaw’s manual. Outright belligerent and pummelling opposition bowlers into submission have been his modus operandi in his debut Ranji season. His team-mates are not complaining. It’s a method that has served him well thus far in this competition. Samad has featured in just four first-class matches, but he has already created an instant impression with his blitzkrieg. He shellacked a 75-ball 128 against Jharkhand, paving the way for J&K’s thumping innings win — their third of the season — catapulting them behind Odisha and Haryana on the points table. Before his exploits against Jharkhand, he harassed Assam’s bowlers at home — his whirlwind unbeaten 72-ball 103 giving J&K a comprehensive first-innings lead. Had it not been for the intermittent rains in Jammu, their bowlers could well have seized the initiative and gone all out for a win.

Unbridled aggression

Samad’s aggressive back-to-back centuries comes days after his big splash at the IPL auction — where he was snapped up by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 20 lakh — and saw him trending on Twitter. The teenager, on his part, takes all this in his stride but concedes the IPL auction splash has boosted his confidence, which was reflective in these two consecutive impactful knocks. “I don’t read too much into all this. The Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise saw potential in me, which is why they have selected me. But I will have to admit that it did play a part in the way I played in these last two matches. My confidence got a massive boost,” he tellsSamad says that he has no qualms in batting at any position. He had opened for J&K in the shorter formats, and in his four first-class matches, the team management has used him in the middle-order, at No.5 and No.6 positions. He has responded to the challenge by striking two centuries and an equal number of fifties, taking his tally to 370 runs in his six innings. The consistency, notwithstanding, his ability to ransack humongous scores in such quick time serves two purposes.

Guys I want to know Your Thoughts about This player From J&k

Will soon be playing for India A. Ranji trophy runs are given quite a lot of respect and he seems ready to smash then all.

Think in India - being selected for IPL seems to be the way to really get noticed.

Think in India - being selected for IPL seems to be the way to really get noticed.

Yes. IPL does highlight a player and his performance.

It is after all the highest quality and most watched limited overs tournament uncapped Indian domestic players can play in.

In November last year, former India cricketer and Sunrisers Hyderabad mentor V.V.S. Laxman had called up Jammu and Kashmir coach Milap Mewada, enquiring about young players who the franchise could select ahead of the Indian Premier League auction.

During the conversation, Laxman clearly told Mewada that they were looking for someone who will play the role of a finisher.

And Mewada, an old friend and under-19 teammate of Laxman, recommended the name of Abdul Samad. Even Laxman’s Team India mate, Irfan Pathan - who was the mentor of Jammu and Kashmir - suggested that Sunrisers should try out Samad - a fearless hitter and a good finisher.

The franchise was impressed with the way the young gun performed and was picked in the auction. And on Tuesday, as he made his debut for Sunrisers, Samad became the third player from Jammu and Kashmir - after Parvez Rasool and Rasikh Salam - to feature in an IPL fixture. Earlier, Manzoor Dar, too, was picked for the IPL, but had to warm the bench.

The youngster from Rajouri had an incredible outing in the domestic tournament last season, scoring three centuries and amassing 592 runs. He hit 36 sixes - the most by anyone in the season – which eventually helped Jammu and Kashmir to storm into the quarterfinals of the Ranji Trophy.

Samad, who turns 19 next month, was in Vadodara for a short training session with his mentor Irfan Pathan before the country went into a lockdown. However, the trip had to be cut short and Samad went back to his home in Jammu and Kashmir. “I would do some stretching and a bit of drills at home. There were times when I went on the terrace and did some basic knocking,” Samad had told Sportstar before leaving for the UAE.

With no one to guide him, Samad would send video clips to Pathan. “Irfan bhai would watch the videos and rectify my mistakes. That actually helped me,” he said.

Once the lockdown was eased, Samad started training at the Science College ground in Jammu. “In the IPL, all-rounders play a key role and keeping that in mind, I am working on a few things. Hopefully that will help,” the youngster, hoping to make things count, had said then.

And finally, the moment arrived for him when Sunrisers assistant coach Brad Haddin handed him the cap - he had aimed for a long time.

Watched some of his videos and I feel he will play play for India. They have a lot of top order options, but they need quality no 6 who can bowl a bit. He is going to be a perfect pick in future

Seems like a great find - the boy can hit as he showed today. The only thing that troubles me is Irfan Pathan mentoring and coaching him  Hope someone more professional is found quick to support this youngster and groom him properly!

What do you mean by Irfan Pathan is coaching him lol? :inti

The former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir's Omar Abdullah was elated at Abdul Samad bringing much glory to his state as the young all-rounder made his IPL debut for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Omar Abdulla took to Twitter to express his happines as he tweeted, "So good to see another youngster from J&K get his IPL cap. #AbdulSamad got his @SunRisers cap this evening. Here’s hoping his career goes from strength to strength.”

Abdul Samad has become the third cricketer from the valley to feature in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match. Notably, J&K cricketers Parvez Rasool (Pune Warriors, RCB and SRH) and Rasikh Salam (Mumbai Indians) are the other two players to have played at least a game in the cash-rich league.

Ahead of their team's clash against Delhi Capitals on Tuesday, Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner handed over the debut cap to the 18-year-old batsman, who has the ability to hit the ball hard and play the role of the finisher. Abdul Amad has been trained and mentored by none other than the former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan himself. Making his IPL debut, Jammu and Kashmir's Abdul Samad (12 off 7) blasted a four and six in his useful cameo.

Abdul Samad, who turns 19-year-old in a month, made his first-class, List A and T20 debut for J&K in 2019. In 11 T20 matches he has played so far, Samad averages a staggering 40 with the bat. His strike-rate stands at an impressive 136.36. His leg-spin can also come handy for his teams at times.

God willing yes.

Nice strike-rates…

Ridiculous strike rate in FC! Don't think I have seen anybody strike at 100+ in FC, although it is a small sample size.

You were correct. MenInG

People just don't follow domestic Cricket. They need an IPL six to notice a obviously talented player. Oh well, at least now he will get his due attention.

Dubai: Abdul Samad, who became the third player from Jammu & Kashmir to play in the IPL, showed in a limited opportunity for Sunrisers Hyderabad on Tuesday that he has got the heart to do well in the pressurecooker atmposphere of the league.

Batting first, Sunrisers had posted a total of 162/4 in 20 overs against Delhi Daredevils at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Jonny Bairstow and David Warner had put on an opening stand of 77 runs. Warner played a knock of 45 runs while Bairstow played an innings of 53 runs.

Kane Williamson also chipped in with a knock of 41 runs to take SRH’s total past the 160-run mark. Samad remained unbeaten on Hyderabad as he played an innings of 12 runs and he also managed to hit one six off the bowling of Anrich Nortje.

“Yeah, I felt really good playing my first match in the IPL. I also hit a big six off the bowling of Anrich Nortje, it gave me confidence that I will be able to do good in the coming games. People back home have a lot of expectations from me, I hope to do well,” Samad told teammate Rashid Khan in a video posted on iplt20.com.

The two players from his state, now declared as an Union Territory, who have played at least one match in the IPL before him were Parveez Rasool and Rasikh Salam.

“Before coming out to bat, the team management had told me to express myself and to play the way I normally do. I started hitting from the first ball, I missed one-two balls, but the six I was able to hit, I got a lot of confidence from that,” he added.

The 18-year-old Samad had made his first class, List A and T20 debut for Jammu and Kashmir in 2019.

Delhi Capitals was chasing 162, but they were restricted to just 147/7 as Rashid Khan returned with the figures of 3-14 from his quota of four overs. Rashid took the wickets of Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Shikhar Dhawan.

“Initially, when I bowled my first ball and I was able to get turn, so I realised the ball is turning and I also summarised that the ball is turning more when I am bowling it quicker. I tried bowling in just the right areas and was looking to bowl dot balls to create pressure on the Delhi batsmen,” Rashid told Samad during a post mortem after the game.

Sunrisers Hyderabad will next take on Chennai Super Kings on October 2 while Delhi Capitals will lock horns with Kolkata Knight Riders on October 3.

Wait so he has an article written about him in gulfnews because he hit one six and scored 12?

Both Samad and Abhishek Sharma are good prospectus for SRH and India.
Both are doing well with bat and ball.

Rashid Khan has really taken him under his wings. Quite like the relationship these two share.

His batting position is what excited me about him.. we desperately need someone for middle order - bunch of em.

I mean, I am watching a few highlights of our domestic games in Pakistan and notice that guys are putting their every bit of energy to hit a six in a 65 meter boundary, but the ball hardly makes it over the rope. And look at the sixes this kid is hitting?

It's totally a different, technique, approach and playing style altogether.

Do we actually need a batting coach from Ranjhi Trophy circles to teach our youngsters on how to improve their approach, playing style and technique?

He lit up domestics last year. Has already earned a reputation in ranji. Exciting prospect. And right kind of player for his same. A tall hard hitting middle bat who can bowl? Gimme.

He is being wasted by SRH. He should be batting in top 5. He is an exciting prospect and with experience he will turn into a match winner.

The bowling level is probably pretty low but man those are some meaty shots

England employed a baseball hitter as their power hitting coach in 2015 and their quality of power hitting has gone another level. Even players who were struggling to hit sixes have been able to develop a technique to hit the big shots consistently. This is a whole new science but the PCB has not even looked in this direction.

If he works a bit on his batting, we can have him in the Indian team for his overall utility.

Pandya at 6, Samad at 7, Jadeja 8, Shami 9, Chahal 10, Bumrah 11.

Saini and Bhuvi as backups. We can go with this squad.

Young Samad was destroyed by Nicolas Pooran - 28 runs off the over.

Hopefully learns from the experience. This is T20 cricket - better bowlers have gone for more.

What a talent. I like his shots selection. Bright future indeed. Bet India won't pick him though hey? Yep if he is good he would still require political connections for a call up. Lets see though. I would pick him for Aussie series.

He has shown glimpses in the IPL. Looks like he has a good shot range to play in the lower order. Will need a couple of years to develop. India need to be patient with him.

He looks ok, but still along way off from the Indian team.

His with 4 International captains if you include rashid khan, still couldn't do much. On a level with abishek and out performed by saha

Did the role asked of him by team. Batting so low down the order is quite hard in t20s. SRH must be satisfied with him cause all their previous experienced and expensive finishers were worse(Pathan, Hooda). This was his first season, cant expect him to outperform Pandya and Pollard.

The same Maxwell who played one of the great ODI innings in a series decider against the word cup winners during a chase? Maxwell just needs to work on his consistency

He is already better than Maxwell.

Let him play international cricket first 😂.Maxwell have bullied ipl for many years so don't disrespect him

Tyron is watching cricket for only 2 years so he is right. We are too nostalgic about past performances, and also every time Maxwell played well, his team won the toss. Ad too that Maxwell doesn't have the pressure of playing all 3 formats.

Surely Samad is already better.

He should have been selected for the Aussie tour (T20s) in place of Pandey, who adds nothing to the team that KL, Iyer, Kohli etc can't. Except Pandya, we have noone to come in and bash from the word go.

Samson is there. I am hoping he will play at 5 and Pandya at 6. Sundar will most likely play at 7 as Pandya most likely will not be bowling.

Pandey? Sky should have played in place of Pandey.

Lol. When was the last time Pandya Ji came on to bat and bashed the bowlers from the word go? Pandya averages just 16 in T20Is after 40 matches. You are ready to drop a batsman like Pandey who averages 47 after 38 matches because according to you he doesn't add anything to the team which Kohli and others are doing. What value Mr Pandya is adding to Indian team? I think it will be better if we play a specialist in place of this wanna be all rounder. :inti

Very good hitting flow. He will be coached well under Dravid in NCA soon and a good option in couple of years for middle order spot.

It's T20. There are times when you'll need a 20@150 guy more than a 40@125 guy. We already have too many "solidifiers" up top. :inti

I suppose he was yusufs replacement
Got found out as a bowler but his batting probably gave him another ipl contract

Found out is strong word. Many bowlers went for multiple sixes in a over this IPL. Bowling wristspin at this level is hard enough but its doubly so for a part-timer. Given a chance SRH will buy him back or retain him in the future.

All-rounder Abdul Samad feels that it is a huge thing for the state of Kashmir that he and Umran Malik have been retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction. SRH, who released some key overseas players including David Warner and Rashid Khan, retained the two uncapped players alongside skipper Kane Williamson. Samad made his IPL debut last season and had an instant impact over critics with his power-hitting abilities with the bat. While, Umran joined SRH as the net bowler but was included in the team midway last season as a replacement for T Natarajan.

Umran straightaway grabbed the limelight with his raw pace. He bowled the second-fastest delivery of IPL 2021 - 152.95. In the top 20 list, Umran featured 5 times with his fast deliveries.

Samad said that he shared great camaraderie with Umran as they talk on a daily basis. The talented all-rounder also claimed that there will be a lot of responsibility on the duo after SRH backed them over others.

“It is a huge thing for the state of Kashmir that me and Umran Malik, both uncapped players, have been retained. We talk on a daily basis, and he was telling me that it would be great if we end up on the same team. We are like brothers. There will be a lot of responsibility on us," Samad told Sports Tak.

He further expressed his gratitude towards SRH for showing faith in him.

“Yes, I was expecting to be retained but there were many big players the franchise could have retained," he said. “It is a very huge thing for me that they have shown such faith. Can’t describe the feeling I had when I found I was getting retained," he said.

The 20-year-old is hopeful that SRH will manage to re-group some of the released players in the auction as he wishes to see Rashid Khan back in Hyderabad colors.

“Will miss the players who were not retained, hopefully, we manage to get hold of as many of those players as we can in the auction," he said. “I wish that we get all the players back but if we see for the sake of the team, I wish to see Rashid Khan back.
