Ranjitsinghji virtually took batting art to another dimension, transcending artistry in regions of divinty. He invented the leg-glance.He may have been overshadowed statistically, but artistically he did not have an equal. No batsmen' strokes were more a manifestation of the beauty or grace of the game of cricket. He epitomised perfection in backfoot play like no other player. No batsmen ever dispatched straight balls from the fastest bowlers with such remorseless ease to the boundary, with a mere flick of the wrists.
Ranji received baptsim in his cricketing career in 1895 in Brighton playing for Sussex in 1985 when he amassed a record 2781 runs ,with 10 centuries in one season, breaking the record of W.G.Grace.His 77 and 150 not out at Lords was the equivalent of a monument constructded He aggregated 1175 run sfor the entire season.
In is first test in 1896 he scored 62 and an unbeaten 154 out of 305 against Australia. That season he amassed a record 2781 runs ,with 10 centuries in one season, breaking the record of W.G.Grace.
In 1897 he almost scored 2000 runs, including a glrious 175 at Sydney,in the final test in 1898.In 1899 he ressurected England from the grave at Trent Bridge and first batsmen to ever score 300 run sin an Englsih season..He repeated this feat the following season, when he scored 5 double centuries.
Above all a very charitable man,.Sadly in 1902 he was denied title of Maharaja and financial problems drew him towards bankruptcy. Thanks to Britsih colonial civil servants he was awarded a vacant princely thrown of his patron, which multiplied his wealth and enabled him to play more cricket in England.Hally that he ultimately lived the life of an aristocrat in England, serving with Fry in the League of nations,.
To me for pure genius he joined a Lara,Kanhai or Trumper.I would bracket him amongst the 10 most artistic and talented cricketers o f all time.CB Fry stated "Ranji could execute three strokes for every ball."Cristopher Martin Jenkins ranked Ranji at 35th place amongst the greatest cricketers of al time.
