Ashwin captains the Dindigul Dragons in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL). At the launch of their new kit, he spoke about the possibility of an ODI recall.
"It entirely depends on what other people (team management and selectors) perceive of my cricket,” said Ashwin.
“It's definitely not in my control. Like any other cricketer, I want to wear the blue jersey and represent India at the World Cup. That's obviously there deep within.”
Since making his India debut in the one-day format in 2010, Ashwin, now 31 years old, has gone on to make 215 international appearances.

He let India down big time. India would have have been 2-2 going into the 5th had he bowled somewhat decently. India need to step away from him when playing overseas. Need to get a good legspiner.

I think it's time for India to move away from Ashwin outside Asia. Some will blame the batting line up but it was a stiff task to chase those runs on a dust bowl but it was him who lost India that match.
He's become more injury prone, so his work load needs to be managed and I've never been convinced by his batting against pace on faster surfaces.

He started off the series well with 4 wickets in first inning but now has costed India a match already in England and few years back, his poor bowling in SA costed India one more match, the one where SA got 450 with hundreds from AB and Faf in chase of 459.

Grossly overrated.
He was very poor in the 2nd test of your recent SA tour the guy is one the biggest weak links when you travel hence the poor away record for India releases all the pressure the Indian pacers are creating

He's already only been playing 1 format for the past year. How much more workload management can be done?
He is a good bat though. Averages the same 29-30 at home and away. That's not something you can say about many batsmen.
His runs especially away are the most useless ever they mostly come when the match is already lost

He has 2 match winning centuries in away games. And 3 out of his 4 away half-centuries have come in wins.

I guess it's time to move on. The commentators were mentioning something about Moeen Ali just pitching it in the rough while Ashwin kept shuffling between his rainbow of deliveries against supposedly inferior players of spin. After 15 overs of that, why not do what Moeen did then? Ego?
At best, he must be a little thick. Certainly no point taking him to Australia, where off-spinners are an unwanted species in any case.

Bowled a thousand different deliveries and never won a match overseas. (10 points for guessing the original quote).
Always said that Ashwin is as mediocre as you can get. Failed miserably in the 2nd Test at SA as well in spinning conditions when he was needed the most. Stick to dust bowls, mate.

I am happy that the rest of the forum is finally realizing what a fraud Ashwin the spin-bowler is. However, he is a decent guy and seems a keen student of the game so hopefully his fall from grace is not too disgraceful.
If he gets dropped at the Oval, it will be the fourth time he has been dropped during India's overseas tours, I believe.

Ashwin is not a fraud.
Frauds can't bowl the way he did in Edgbaston. Nor can they comfortably outbowl Maharaj in SA who outbowled Lyon in the subsequent series in SA.
With that being said, Ashwin's performance has been deeply disappointing and we can't keep making excuses for him. He hasn't won a single test for India in SENA.
His injury was real which was evident by his action & him needing a physio after a quick run but still he could have tried better.
Moeen & Lyon are able to impart 2400 revs per min while Ashwin in Southampton could only reach 1600. That's shocking. Whether this is due to injury or this is his limit is unknown but he was never known for imparting a good amount of revs to the ball.
Regardless, Southampton was a laddu pitch. All he needed to do was bowl in the rough to righties and keep it tight to lefties and he could have restricted Eng to 200. But he couldn't even do that.
I still stand by all the comments I made about him all these years. He is a good bowler. He was unlucky in prev overseas cycle but this cycle, he got chances fair and square but didn't capitalize. Maybe this is what his destiny his but if he were to honestly self introspect and realize bowling 6 balls in one area is the way to go (with overspin and not sidespin), maybe slowly he can redeem himself in future tours.
He has lost the lone spinner spot (rightly so) but he can work his way up from the 2nd spinner spot.
Ashwin easily looked like the best spinner in the world in Edgbaston. I don't believe that in a span of 3 tests he became the worst spinner in the world (which is how he looked in Southampton).
As a fan, I am deeply disappointed. It's upto him to work on his flaws, fitness and help India win some SENA games in the future if he ever gets a chance.

He is not a fraud but he is in the mold of David Warner, young James Anderson, Mahela Jayawardena, Makhaya Ntini players whose output reduces significantly when they go out of their comfort zone. He is probably the biggest match winner among all test cricketers for tests played in Asia but he is no where near effective when the conditions are taken away from him. However this does not make him a bad cricketer just a limited one.

Dropped again overseas, he should be used to it by now. I don't remember him playing all matches in a SENA tour before but I may be misremembering

Never has, I think. For good reason too. Jadeja is more useful as the sole spinner and should be played over Ashwin in Australia.
He is not half as good as Saqlain was. I would like to see him take a 5fer vs the ATG Aus team, or bowl like Saqi did overseas in tests.
Ashwin is a product of one sided manufactured wickets.

Ashwin is India’s fourth leading wicket taker of all time in the Test arena having claimed 342 scalps at an average of 25.43, including 26 five-wicket hauls.
The 32-year-old has also amassed 2,361 runs at an average of 29.14 in his 65 Test matches to date, with a career-best of 124 coming against the West Indies in 2013.
The off-spinning all-rounder, who will take over as overseas player from James Pattinson at the end of June, is expected to feature in six of the final seven red ball matches.
Ashwin’s stint will start at home against Essex on Sunday 30 June, followed by matches against Somerset and Surrey.
He will miss the trip to Scarborough to face Yorkshire due to international commitments with India, but is expected to return to face Kent, Warwickshire and Surrey in the final three matches of the season.
“We knew what we wanted to sign and that was a world-class bowler,” said Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket, Mick Newell.
“Whether that was a fast or a slow bowler, we were prepared to look at all options.
“As it happens, we’ve signed a very good spinner, a very experienced spinner and one we hope can contribute with the bat as well.
“We’ve seen world-class slow bowlers have a huge match-winning effect in county cricket over many years.
“Ravi certainly has that potential – and we’re very much looking forward to welcoming him to the squad and letting him loose on our opposition.”
Ashwin’s Nottinghamshire stint will be his second in county cricket after featuring in four matches for Worcestershire in 2017.
Enjoying the late summer English conditions, the Chennai born twirler took 20 wickets at 29.15 for the Pears including 5-68 against Gloucestershire, as well as notching 214 runs at an average of 42.8.
“I’m really looking forward to joining up with Nottinghamshire, to playing cricket at an iconic venue like Trent Bridge and hopefully contributing to some County Championship victories,” said Ashwin.
