Captain Nacho leaves after 23 years at Real Madrid

Captain Nacho has left Real Madrid after winning 26 trophies including six European Cups.

The Spain defender, 34, joined Madrid's youth academy aged 10 and made 364 appearances following his senior debut in 2012.

His final appearance was the 2-0 Champions League final win over Borussia Dortmund earlier this month that saw him become one of five players to win six European Cups with the club.

Nacho, who is with the Spain squad at Euro 2024, is expected to now join Saudi Arabian club Al-Qadsiah., external

"It has been months of reflection, indecision and doubts, but I come to tell you that I need to live one last and different experience with my family, and this is the perfect time," said Nacho, who has 26 international caps.

Nacho also won four La Liga titles, two Spanish Cups, five Club World Cups, four European Super Cups and five Spanish Super Cups with his only senior club.

"Since he arrived at our youth academy as a child, Nacho has been an example to everyone and has earned the affection, recognition and admiration of everyone," said Real Madrid president Florentino Perez.

Lots of people are going towards the Saudi clubs, money is particularly the main reason for it I guess.

We might more players moving to Saudi Arab for the same.

Coz, at the end of the day money matters but most of these players past their prime and are no longer required by their team.

So, it's best possible move for them, considering the game time given and also the money.

Luka Modrić signs Real Madrid contract extension

Luka Modrić isn’t done yet, with the veteran midfielder signing a one year extension to his Real Madrid contract.

The club captain’s previous deal expired at the end of June, and after featuring for Croatia at EURO 2024, the 38-year-old has now put pen to paper on an extension which will run until June 2025.

Modrić joined Los Blancos from Tottenham in 2012 and has so far won 26 titles over his 12 seasons in the Spanish capital, the most in the history of the club.

He has played 534 games, scoring 39 goals, and on a personal level he won the Ballon d’Or, the FIFA Player’s The Best Award in 2018 and was named UEFA Player of the Year.

He will turn 39 in September, but still played an integral role last season, making 46 appearances as Carlo Ancelotti’s side won the LaLiga title and the Champions League.

Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga will miss Wednesday's Uefa Super Cup game against Atalanta and the first portion of the season after sustaining a knee injury

The France midfielder twisted his knee in training at the Warsaw National Stadium on Tuesday.

The 21-year-old caught his studs in the ground and then collided with team-mate Aurelien Tchouameni.

Scan results showed Camavinga had sprained the collateral ligament on his left knee, Real said on Wednesday.

While Real did not put a timeframe on Camavinga's recovery, the club reportedly expect the midfielder to be out for up to seven weeks.

The Frenchman played 46 times in all competitions last season as Real won the La Liga title and Champions League.

Madrid take on 2024 Europa League winners Atalanta in Poland in the Super Cup, with Kylian Mbappe expected to make his competitive debut for the club following his arrival from Paris St-Germain.

The club begin their La Liga title defence against Mallorca at the Bernabeu on 18 August.

Stockport coach Mangan's Real Madrid move blocked

Stockport assistant coach Andy Mangan has been denied a move to Real Madrid after his work permit was rejected.

The former Tranmere and Shrewsbury striker was on the verge of joining the La Liga champions to work under boss Carlo Ancelotti, with the switch subject to a work permit.

But the 38-year-old's application, which could have taken up to nine months to process, is understood to have been rejected by the Spanish government and the move is currently off.

Mangan had worked with Ancelotti's son, Davide, who is part of the staff at Madrid, while doing his Uefa coaching badges.

He joined Stockport in the summer after they won League Two under manager Dave Challinor. The Hatters are currently unbeaten and second in League One after four games.

Ex-forward Mangan spent his playing career in the lower leagues and featured for Tranmere, Forest Green and Accrington and won promotion from the National League three times.

He also worked with Joey Barton at Fleetwood and Bristol Rovers as first-team coach and was caretaker at Rovers after Barton's dismissal in 2023.

Carlo Ancelotti is named men's coach of the year after leading Real Madrid to the Champions League title.

Spanish football matches should have stopped after deadly floods, Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti says

Football matches in Spain should not have been played at the weekend following last Tuesday's devastating flooding that killed at least 217 people, the Real Madrid manager has said.

Real's match at Valencia scheduled for Saturday was one of two top-flight games postponed, but other LaLiga games went ahead.

"Football should have stopped this weekend," Carlo Ancelotti said.

He added: "Football is a party and you can celebrate when things are going well, but when they're not going well there's no celebration to be had. It's the most important of the unimportant things in life."

He said "we are not the ones in charge" and "we have zero power", adding: "All the coaches had the same opinion not to play."

Ancelotti made the remarks at a news conference ahead of a Champions League match against AC Milan at the Bernabeu on Tuesday.

"A week has passed since the tragedy unfolded," he said.

"We're very sad and we're very close to all the people affected.

"Hopefully, this can be dealt with soon. In this respect, I want you to understand that talking about football at this time is difficult, just like playing."

Agree with Real Madrid boss.

Games shouldn't have taken place. Not the right environment right now.

'Mbappe fell flat when needed' - why Real Madrid are in trouble

Three losses in five games and facing an uphill task to qualify for the next phase of the Champions League.

That is not a position 15-time European champions Real Madrid expected to be in.

Sitting 24th in the table following a 2-0 defeat by Liverpool on Wednesday, the Spanish giants find themselves in big trouble in the tournament in which they have long been heralded masters.

In the competition's new format, the top eight teams automatically reach the last-16 while those in ninth-24th move into a two-legged play-off.

The defending champions are currently 24th and face the genuine prospect of not reaching the next phase.

Superstars Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham had little influence on the game, with the former's penalty miss summing up a torrid night for the holders.

England midfielder Bellingham said Liverpool were "more up for it" than his side while pundits said Real's current performances are "alarming".

With three losses in their five Champions League matches, as many as in their previous 24 games, what is going wrong for Real Madrid? Could they really be eliminated from the competition they have become so synonymous with?

Mbappe 'flattered to deceive'

Mbappe's move to Real Madrid has dominated headlines from the word go.

The months of speculation, the fact Paris St-Germain had to let him go for free, the astronomical wages, the hype and expectation.

And now, the French forward's struggle to settle into this team of superstars.

"We haven't seen the best of Mbappe tonight," former Real midfielder Steve McManaman said on TNT Sports.

"They needed Mbappe tonight and he flattered to deceive. The Madrid press will be ruthless because he didn’t deliver again when he needed to.

"Madrid are going through a rough patch and the big players are not performing. All the baggage around Mbappe magnifies it. This year they are really, really struggling."

Mbappe has not found his feet and questions remain over his position and how to get the best out of both he and Vinicius Jr, who plays a similar role, in the same team.

In the absence of Vinicius Jr through injury, Mbappe still failed to make his mark. But his team-mates remain confident he can produce.

"Kylian is a wonderful player but the pressure is humongous," said Bellingham.

"The penalty is not why we lost the game. Kylian can keep his head high and I know for sure he will produce many more big moments for this club."

Bellingham, injuries, Ancelotti - what else is going wrong?

It is easy to cite Mbappe's penalty miss and his lack of impact on the game as reasons why Real lost.

But the reality is Mbappe wasn't the only one to struggle. Bellingham is yet to score in this Champions League campaign and in the build-up to this match the 21-year-old said he felt he was used as a "scapegoat" at this summer's Euros, where England finished runners-up to Spain.

"Going into the Euros everyone was really excited about Bellingham's form and he dipped a little bit, as did a lot of England players," said former Blackburn striker Chris Sutton on BBC Radio 5 Live.

"When you are as high profile a player as he is then you come to be judged by your performances and maybe he didn't hit the level that people have come to expect."

Perhaps even more of a concern is Ancelotti's ever growing injury list.

Midfielder Eduardo Camavinga hobbled off at Anfield with a suspected hamstring problem and joins full-back Dani Carvajal, forwards Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr, midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni and defenders David Alaba and Eder Militao on Real's list of wounded.

Pressure in Spain is also on boss Ancelotti.

Despite guiding them to La Liga and Champions League glory last season, the Italian has faced criticism from the media.

But Spanish football expert Guillem Balague says a dig Ancelotti made in Tuesday's press conference where he said "no-one can give me advice about substitutions - I have managed 1,300 games, compiled 1,300 line-ups and made more than 4,000 substitutions" was not aimed at the press but at Real's higher ups.

"It is because he feels people in the club are doubting his ability to turn this around," said Balague.

"He feels that the doubts will grow with every game because he is unable to put a team out at the moment that is fluent in football, these things require time.

"But he knows not a lot of time is allowed at Real Madrid and the doubt if he is the man for the job in the near future comes from within."

Pressure really on for 'alarming' Real

Real Madrid have never been knocked out at the group stage of the Champions League, albeit this year's updated format gives them some grace to make up lost ground.

But while Liverpool's form this season indicates something special could be bubbling, this was the first time they had beaten Real in eight Champions League meetings, including two finals.

Usually a juggernaut in this competition, former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand said Real's current form is "alarming".

"When you have superstars, you can change your season at any point," he said.

"The football is a big concern. You have to prove to your teammates you are the guy - Mbappe will be wanting to prove to his team-mates ‘I am a galactico, I am the guy.'

"That moment will come again soon. It has to, they could be heading out."

But Real have experienced everything in this competition and the message from Ancelotti following the defeat was clear.

"We will qualify to the next round and we will compete as every year. You will see. We are going to go through."

Jude Bellingham's second-half strike helped Real Madrid beat Mallorca in Jeddah to set up a meeting with Barcelona in Sunday's Spanish Super Cup final.

The England midfielder broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute of the semi-final by poking home after Rodrygo's header hit the post and Kylian Mbappe's follow-up was saved.

Last year's winners added further goals in stoppage time when Martin Valjent turned Brahim Diaz's through ball into his own net and Rodrygo swept in Lucas Vazquez's shot from close range.

Bellingham's goal was his seventh for Real in his past nine games and his ninth of the season.

Sunday's Clasico, a repeat of last year's final which Real won 4-1, kicks off at 19:00 GMT.

Barcelona, who were 4-0 winners when the sides met in La Liga in October, earned their place in the final by beating Athletic Club 2-0 on Wednesday.

Dani Olmo missed that match amid Barcelona's troubles with registering the winger, but he could feature in the final after provisional permission was given by the Spanish national sports council.

Barcelona have won the Super Cup a record 14 times, with Real just one title behind them.

Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Real Madrid came from behind to beat Las Palmas and go top of La Liga.

Fabio Silva's close-range effort gave the visitors a surprise lead but Mbappe levelled from the penalty spot after Sandro Ramirez fouled Rodrygo.

Brahim Diaz slotted home from Lucas Vazquez's pass to give Real the lead before an exquisite finish from Mbappe, who guided the ball into the net for his 12th league goal of the campaign, put Carlo Ancelotti's side in complete control at the break.

Rodrygo slotted in Fran Garcia's cutback in the 57th minute as Real's dominance continued after the interval.

Las Palmas' half-time substitute Benito Ramirez was then sent off after a video assistant review of his studs up lunge into the midriff of Vazquez upgraded the initial yellow card to a red.

The result means Real are top of the table, two points clear of Atletico Madrid, who lost against Leganes on Saturday.

Real had three goals ruled out for offside, including what would have been a hat-trick goal for Mbappe while Enland midfielder Jude Bellingham missed a host of chances.

Attention now turns to Wednesday when Real host Red Bull Salzburg in the Champions League.

Xabi Alonso responds to numerous questions on Real Madrid future

If Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti could not already feel the shadow of Xabi Alonso in his office, this week the Basque manager and his Bayer Leverkusen side are at the Valdebebas training ground as they prepare to face Atletico Madrid. Much of the Madrid-based press was interested in his prospects of replacing the Italian though.

Leverkusen will look for a second win under Alonso at the Metropolitano in three years, after their victory in the Spanish capital helped knock out Los Colchoneros in the group stage for the first time. Alonso was peppered with questions about whether he would be continuing at Leverkusen next season.

“I can’t say anything, we’re in the middle of a season and all the clubs have big goals. Atletico has them, Madrid too and I’m thinking about achieving them. The match is very important for both of us and I’m focused on that.”

However Alonso did wax lyrical about his time at Real Madrid, calling it ‘unforgettable’.

“Time passes over the years but the affection endures and that relationship is unforgettable. We are grateful, the bond is very strong, it was a very nice stage as a player. They were intense years, it was hard for us to get what we wanted but when we achieved it, it will endure.”

Understandably, Alonso was asked if he had prepared himself for the onslaught of questions about his future.

“I haven’t prepared myself, it doesn’t bother me, it doesn’t surprise me. I’m only thinking about Atletico, that’s what I’ve prepared myself for and I’ve got enough to do,” he told Marca.

Alonso still has a house in Madrid, and was back in December to carry out renovation work, something that obviously kept the rumour mill turning. On facing Atletico, Alonso noted that the atmosphere at the Metropolitano was something to be reckoned with, and their stars are smart with their use of the ball.

“Coming back to Madrid is always a great experience. I remember two years ago, which was exciting. Coming back always has a special touch. Atletico demands a lot from you and that is motivation enough.”

The Basque coach has been tipped as a future Real Madrid manager almost since he left their under-19s team, before spells at Real Sociedad B and Leverkusen. Now with both Ancelotti and Alonso out of contract in 2026, many see it as a question of when not if Alonso returns to the Santiago Bernabeu. It is not yet clear whether Ancelotti will be given the chance to see out his contract if Los Blancos secure La Liga, or President Florentino Perez wants to speed up the operation anyway.

Real Madrid gave their ambitions to defend their Champions League title a huge boost with a comfortable win to eliminate Red Bull Salzburg.

After losing three of their opening six games, Madrid looked more like their usual selves as they dispatched the Austrians with a first-half double from Rodrygo, before a goal from Kylian Mbappe and two from Vinicius Jr followed after the break.

This win and results elsewhere guarantee Madrid at least a play-off spot, and they are one point off the automatic qualification places, with a visit to Brest on the final matchday next week.

Real break 1bn euro barrier to top money league

Real Madrid have become the first football club to generate more than 1bn euros in annual revenue, according to analysis by Deloitte.

The Spanish club retain top spot in Deloitte's Money League study with revenue of 1.05bn euros (£883m) from a 2023-24 season in which they won La Liga and the Champions League.

Manchester City are again second with revenue of £708m.

They won an unprecedented fourth consecutive Premier League title and the Club World Cup and European Super Cup last season.

Paris St-Germain (£681m), Manchester United (£651m) and Bayern Munich (£646m) complete the top five.

Aston Villa enter the top 20 after competing in Europe last season for the first time since 2011.

Nine Premier League clubs are in the top 20, with Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea, Newcastle and West Ham retaining their places.

Lyon are the only other new club, with Napoli and Eintracht Frankfurt dropping out.

A further five Premier League clubs are in the top 30, with Brighton 21st after competing in the Europa League for the first time in their history.

Crystal Palace, Everton, Fulham and Wolves are ranked 26th to 29th.

Revenues for the top 20 clubs rose by 6% to a record £9.47bn.

Matchday revenue was the fastest growing revenue stream, rising by 11% to £1.77bn, helped by an increase in stadium capacity, ticket prices and premium hospitality.

Real benefited most from an increase in matchday revenues, generating £210m - double last year's figure - after renovation of their Bernabeu Stadium.

Barcelona dropped from fourth to sixth after a £53m fall in matchday revenue, with games played at a smaller stadium while the Nou Camp is redeveloped.

Commercial revenue remained the largest revenue source in the Money League, rising 10% to £4.14bn and accounting for 44% of total revenue, helped by the hosting of non-football live events such as concerts.

"Money League clubs continue to break records with ongoing growth in commercial and matchday revenues," said Tim Bridge, lead partner in the Deloitte sports business group.

Total broadcast revenue remained at £3.64bn because each of the big five leagues - the Premier League, Spain's La Liga, German Bundesliga, France's Ligue 1 and Italy's Serie A - are in the same domestic broadcast cycle.

Kylian Mbappe rescued a point for Real Madrid in a tense derby with city rivals Atletico Madrid as the hosts remained top of La Liga.

Diego Simeone's side had gone in front through a controversial 35th-minute penalty converted by Julian Alvarez, who chose the 'Panenka' style approach from the spot, chipping the ball down the middle as goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois dived past.

The referee pointed to the spot after going to the video assistant referee (VAR) monitor as Aurelien Tchouameni was adjudged to have fouled Samuel Lino.

Five minutes after the break, Mbappe scored his 16th league goal of the season when he reacted quickest after Jude Bellingham's shot bounced into his path.

England international Bellingham had a greater impact in the second half, heading on to the crossbar and having a shot saved by Jan Oblak as Real pushed for a winner.

The result left them a point clear of second-placed Atletico, with Barcelona five points behind Carlo Ancelotti's side.

However, Barca could close the gap on Sunday evening when they travel to Sevilla (20:00 GMT).

Focus now turns to the Champions League for Real, who travel to Manchester City for the first leg of the knockout phase play-offs.

Luka Modric scored a stunning goal to help send Real Madrid second in La Liga as they ended a run of three games without a win against a battling Girona.

Rivals Barcelona occupy top spot with Real second on goal difference, and Atletico Madrid a point adrift in third.

With England midfielder Jude Bellingham watching on from the stands after receiving a red card in the draw with Osasuna, Modric opened the scoring by controlling the ball on his chest and smashing a half-volley past Girona goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga from 25 yards.

Vinicius Junior wrapped up the three points with a composed finish after being played through on goal by Kylian Mbappe in the 83rd minute.

Before Modric's wonderful strike, former Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek forced Real keeper Thibaut Courtois into a fine one-handed save after he latched on to Arnaut Danjuma's flick.

In the second half, Lucas Vazquez had Gazzaniga desperately diving across his goal but his powerful strike drifted inches wide of the post.

Danjuma missed a huge opportunity to level for the visitors when he was played through in the 56th minute but he curled the ball wide of Courtois' near post.

Two minutes later, Vinicius collected the ball on the left, drifted into the centre and thundered a shot off the bar, before he sealed victory with his late strike.

The Real faithful were happy to welcome back defender David Alaba - the Austrian started his first game in 434 days after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.

Up next for the European champions is a trip to San Sebastian on Wednesday when they take on Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey semi-finals.

Vinicius Jr wants new Real deal amid Saudi interest

Vinicius Jr says he is "living the dream" at Real Madrid and wants to sign a new deal with the Champions League holders.

The Brazil forward, 24, has two years left on his current contract and is rumoured to be a transfer target for the Saudi Pro League.

"I am very calm because my contract lasts until 2027 and I hope to renew my contract as soon as possible because I am happy here," he said.

"I am living the dream of playing with the best players in the world, the best coach, the best president, the best fans. Here everybody loves me so much. I couldn't be in a better place."

Vinicius left Flamengo to join Real in 2018 and has won three La Liga titles and the Champions League twice.

Real continue the defence of their European crown on Tuesday, when they host neighbours Atletico in the first leg of their last-16 tie, and Vinicius goes into the game with 102 goals from 300 appearances for the club.

Kylian Mbappe fired Real Madrid back to the top of La Liga as he scored twice in a comeback victory at Villarreal.

Juan Foyth opened the scoring for the hosts but two Mbappe strikes in six first-half minutes earned the points for Madrid.

It puts Los Blancos three points clear of previous leaders Barcelona, who visit third-placed Atletico Madrid on Sunday night.

Villarreal remain fifth in La Liga, five points off the Champions League qualification places after back-to-back league defeats.

They started the stronger, with top scorer Ayoze Perez twice denied by Thibaut Courtois in the opening seven minutes.

After Courtois tipped a low curling Perez effort behind, Villarreal scored from the resulting corner when captain Foyth slammed home amid a goalmouth scramble.

Kylian Mbappe was sent off for the first time in his Real Madrid career but his team-mates held on to defeat Alaves and move back to within four points of La Liga leaders Barcelona.

Mbappe was initially shown a yellow card for catching Antonio Blanco high on the shin with a late challenge, but that was upgraded to red after the video assistant referee (VAR) invited referee Cesar Soto Grado to watch the incident again on the pitchside monitor.

The incident occurred four minutes after Eduardo Camavinga gave Real Madrid the lead with a curling left-footed strike from just outside the penalty area.

Thibaut Courtois produced six saves to thwart Alaves, who were themselves reduced to 10 men when Manu Sanchez caught Vinicius Jr high on the leg in the 70th minute.

Vinicius and Jude Bellingham started on the bench, perhaps with a view to the 3-0 deficit they will look to overturn against Arsenal in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti introduced his two stars as his side looked to kill off the hosts, but they mustered just one shot on target in the second half compared to Alaves' five.

Victory keeps Los Blancos in touch with Barcelona, who beat strugglers Leganes 1-0 on Saturday.

Mbappe will miss Real's home fixture against Athletic Bilbao next Sunday through suspension.

Real Madrid will travel to Barcelona on 11 May in a match that could determine the title race.
