[Report] BCCI accused of switching pitches in ICC World Cup 2023

Ricky Ponting was superb at the end of the match:

"Some of the Australian players were worried about this surface. But I said to them don't worry about the surface. It's a cricket pitch, it's 22 yards long and just go out there and play your best game and they've done that today"

Cummins already told that way before lol at Ponting behaving like Pakistani cricketer.

They got to bat first and got a drop in pitch just so we can see Kohli hit a trademark CHOKE

It is difficult to get transplant for a weak spirit, you can’t buy it unfortunately.

Cowards

Ricky Ponting "It was very, very sub-continental conditions today. A wicket preparation that has probably ended up backfiring on India to be totally fair"
India had an outstanding team and with their varied and skilful bowling could win on any type of surface. So I wonder why they felt the need to interfere with pitch preparation. It is clear even in the group matches that wherever they played the pitches were slower than normal. For the final, as well, a slow and tired looking pitch was prepared but it gave the side batting second an advantage, when the dew came, and hence Ponting's comment.

Perhaps the fact that they did not just back themselves to win whatever the surface betrayed a touch of insecurity.

The accusations are 100% true, the evidence is clear, expect in the final, the wrong pitch was doctored! LOL!

Still, image the humiliation bestowed upon BCCI/GoI, despite rigging pitches, India scored LESS than what Pakistan did in the 1992 Final.

Zabardast - to the max!

They tried to be clever with the pitch and it backfired.

What they needed was a regular pitch to reduce the toss' impact. Instead, they built a track like this and ruined their ability to bat freely. You're playing at home and shot yourself in the foot. They should have had the confidence to do well on a decent pitch in home conditions.

I suppose a fitting conclusion to pitch manipulation and rightly called out by Ponting + Cummins.

People down play it but conditions definitely helped in the semi final. First innings was best to bat and when we came to bat when it's supposed to be easier after first 10 and anything chaseable with 'miracles' possible as some Indian fans said, there was no dew and the pitch started to slow up so our batsmen couldn't hit when the platform was set. Usually the ball would fly to the boundary.

If NZ batted first I am pretty sure they would have won. Infact Iyer innings was the key if he played similar to choker Kohli NZ would have still chased it down.

Absolutely true. It was a tired pitch in semi which kept on getting slower n slower in second innings.

Whether pace friendly or spin friendly isn't the question, the question is changing the pitch characteristics for one game to give undue advantage to a particular team. Perth is always bouncy, Sydney is always spin friendly and Adelaide is always good for batting. That's the nature of those pitches. Now when Australia played semis against India in 2015, they didn't change the very character of Sydney pitch to make it seamer friendly in order to gain advantage over India. No board does that as how bcci does it that is too make the pitch for every match as per the opposition weakness.
In the end bcci and Indian team got what they deserved. They want all the batting records in bilateral series on flat pitches but come the world cup and they want to look ways to gain advantage over other countries thru slow and rough pitches.

But will this have any consequences? I mean this is not a bilateral series but an ICC event where you can not give home team any special advantage or?

One thing is for sure india made full use of the home advantage they pick and choose the grounds and venues perfectly according to the other teams weaknesses and in the final they tried to be too cute with the pitch.

Some fans accusing BCCI over pitch change, DRS system etc. but we are failed to spot that ACB had successful in installing robotic chip in their player prior to final since 1999 WC final

Hope the haughty Indian fans on this thread who were defending this practice of pitch tampering are happy. It's cost us a WC trophy.
There is a high chance of ACB hacked final Ahmedabad pitch as Cummins was spotted taking pictures of pitch on his cellphone

The former cricketer wanted a better pitch for the final because India was defeated that day.

-------------------------------------

Harbhajan Singh about the Pitch made for the Final of ICC World Cup:

"I think it was the kind of pitch which was on the slower side. It was drier than the usual pitch. You know, I would have liked to see a pitch where a lot of scores like 300 plus been scored. That sort of pitch would have India more than this kind of pitch where, you know, you bring your opposition in the game,"

"You know where your batters were in such great form. They looked really good throughout the tournament, and they were fantastic and very, very proud of them. The way they play their cricket. I think, a slightly better pitch would help them to perform better than what happened,"

"I believe India was the superior side. You ask anyone. Yesterday before the game, I spoke to a couple of my Aussie friends who I played with in my era. And all of them, they said, India is just top side, and it will be India all the way, But, of course, the Australian team they came out with the plan, they executed well, and they played fantastic cricket. And, of course, if the wicket was on slightly on a better side, one with the ball coming nicely onto the bat, Uh, you know, I think, we would have enjoyed more,"

As an Indian fan, the 2023 World Cup loss hurts as painful as 1996 Semis. As a 10 year old in 1996, I was not able to digest india folding for 120/8 on a deteriorating eden gardens pitch in second innings.

2023 World Cup final, instead of a sporting pitch , BCCI messed up by offering a dry pitch which is two paced assuming Australia would always bat first in knock out games. It kinda back fired on Indian batters who are stroke makers and could not get going. Disgusting and worst pitch manipulation.

Had it been a sporting pitch, India would have had greater chance either batting first or chasing.

I think, its this behavior of BCCI coupled with the obsession of hosting key matches in Ahmedabad/narendra modi backyard which kindaaa irritated many a neutral fans including pakistanies. I thought, the other fans would have been considerate wishing a high for kohli and rohit Sharma to win a World Cup but was not to be. Overall, its the way BCCI handled the World Cup final which garnered lot of negativity.

Australia won fair. Stop insinuating that they won because of the pitch.

With the exception of Australia at Chennai, none of the surfaces were slower than "usual" . Lucknow is a horribly slow surface even during the IPL.

India scored 320 odd vs South Africa, chased down 280 vs NZ at Dharmashala, Scored 400 in the semis and 350 against SL. These are not usual scores on slow surfaces.

BCCI cannot be rigging pitches without the involvement of ICC. If the pitch has been rigged then it has to be assumed that both BCCI and ICC are to be blamed but these are just allegations until some firm proofs come to light.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar about pitch controversy in India:

"The accusation of BCCI interference in the selection of the pitches for India matches again was pretty irrelevant, as the ICC pitch consultant was around, and only after the ICC gave its approval was the match played on the pitch,"

"Nothing in the playing conditions say that for the knockout games, a fresh pitch had to be used, so just because India's matches were played on previously used pitches didn't mean there was any hanky-panky. That was proven conclusively in the semifinals, where the allegation of a dry pitch to suit the Indian spinners was made, but more than 725 runs were scored, and a fast bowler took seven wickets for India,"

Former Indian players just cannot accept the defeat in the final of the World Cup.

------------------------------------

Ambati Rayudu about the pitch made for the Final of the ICC World Cup:

"Even the wicket was very, very slow and lethargic for a final. I don't know whose idea it was. I think even a normal surface would have done because we were way stronger than the Australian side. We didn't have to do all that in the final. It was just supposed to be a good cricketing wicket, which, unfortunately, it wasn't,"

"Somehow, people think that they are helping the Indian side by preparing a wicket like that. We got stuck on a wicket that was so slow. I don't think that should happen. It should be a good cricketing wicket. We have the skill and strength in our side to beat any side. The pitch remaining the same throughout 100 overs is an ideal scenario in a limited-overs game. The toss shouldn't matter that much,"

"I don't know if somebody has thought about it or done it on purpose. If they had done it on purpose, it's stupidity. But I don't think they would have done it,"

Just curious how did you come to this conclusion that he is not able to accept defeat? He is just saying the pitch was poor for a final and hinting that BCCI might have tampered with it, a theory which was flown by everyone here. I mean so many people reminded me that Ponting said the same on air and how its written in stone just bcoz Ponting said it. Not sure what different is Rayudu saying and how are we concluding he is not able to accept defeat. Are you sure?

Mr. ambati it was Indian team management's idea to prepare to tamper with pitches throughout the tournament.
No way the BCCI or other ground authorities can do that on their own.
And it backfired spectacularly in the final. They should have put more faith in their own abilities.

I guess you should read the first paragraph. That is where he said that he wanted the pitch to be kept normal
I think even a normal surface would have done because we were way stronger than the Australian side
Look here. I guess he is disappointed that they lost because of pitch. This is my opinion that he is not willing to accept that they lost the final. You can interpret the para in your own words. your call.

Has BCCI given any clarification or justification as to why the putches were switched in the semi-final?

I think he is concluding as such because Rayudu is assuming that India lost due to the conditions which allowed a inferior Australia team to beat them. The implication is that India was most likely to win but for some unforeseen reason someone in the hierarchy tried to prepare a favorable pitch which is why a weakened team beat the favorites.

His statement is not invalid India had a better team. That being said Australia are serial winners in pressure matches and India are serial losers. So maybe regardless of pitch the team that showed up won.

ICC gives ‘average’ rating to pitches for World Cup final and four other India games

The ICC gave an average rating to eight pitches used for the 2023 World Cup, including the one used for the final between India and Australia.

The wicket for the summit clash in Ahmedabad was under the scanner even before the match started after it was confirmed that the game would be played on a used pitch. The India-Pakistan game had earlier been played on the same track, with the ICC also rating the wicket for that clash “Average”.

India went 97 balls without a single boundary in the final, struggling to reach 240 in their 50 overs. In reply, Australia, helped by the dew, chased down the target with relative ease, with Travis Head making a 120-ball 137.

The wicket for the second semi-final between Australia and South Africa played at Eden Gardens was also rated “Average”. Batting first, the Proteas were all out for 212, with Australia huffing their way to the total, losing seven wickets in total in 47.2 overs.

Incidentally, the wicket for the first semifinal between India and New Zealand, which attracted plenty of attention after allegations that the hosts swapped the pitch and opted for a used track, was given a “Good” rating.

Eden Gardens which won the award for the ‘Best Ground and Pitch’ in the 2023 IPL, hosted five games in the World Cup, with three games being played on pitches that eventually got an “Average” rating. Besides the second semi-final, the ICC also adjudged that the India-South Africa and Pakistan-Bangladesh matches were played on “Average” wickets.

The pitch for the World Cup opener between India and Australia in Chennai, where the eventual champions were dismissed for 199, was also given an “Average” rating. The wicket for India’s game against England at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium was also marked the same.

All the wickets, however, escaped any sanction, with the ICC only marking a pitch substandard if it gets a rating of poor or unfit.

Wickets that were rated “Average” by the ICC in the World Cup:
India v Australia, MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai
India v Pakistan, Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad
India v England, Ekana Stadium, Lucknow
Pakistan v Bangladesh, Eden Gardens, Kolkata
India v South Africa, Eden Gardens, Kolkata
Australia v Bangladesh, MCA Stadium, Pune
Australia v South Africa semi-final, Eden Gardens, Kolkata
India v Australia final, Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad

5 out of 8 for India matches.
I was the only one here who said they were doctoring pitches throughout the tournament

They do doctored pitches but it would be interesting to see how they perform now in away grounds

I don't know why ICC never took any notice during the World Cup, it was their responsibility to keep a check on these things.

They made custom pitches but forgot that this Indian team is the greatest choking team of all time.

Slow pitches don't work well in ODI tournaments. Fast outfields and green tops are much better.

Former India star Mohammed Kaif makes startling revelation about ODI World Cup 2023 final pitch

"Both Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid came in the evening to inspect the pitch, this practice was done for three days straight, and I saw the pitch changing colour. They have Cummins, and Starc who are fast bowlers, so give them slow pitches and a mistake happens. People say that curator makes the pitch and no one has a say is false and baseless,"

India lost the WTC Final to Australia in another major loss of the year 2023

Team India had an incredible campaign and were the favourites to lift the trophy for the third time at a major ICC tournament. However, one bad day, which turned out to be the finals, cost them the trophy. Rohit Sharma and the entire Indian team performed exceptionally well throughout the tournament, with significant contributions from various players.
Earlier in the year, India faced another setback as they lost to the Pat Cummins-led Australian side in the finals of the ICC Test World Championship. With both major trophies lost in a single year, it was undoubtedly a disappointing period for the fans and players. Nevertheless, the Indian fans continued to back their team, believing they would perform exceptionally well in the future.

It's hard not to laugh about the blunder India did with the pitch in the final...even all these months later. And reading Indian ex-cricketers moan about it makes it funnier. It seemed like everyone was ready to just hand the trophy to India and then Australia just came out, played like Australia and gave all of India a generational trauma they will never forget. Its rare for a team to get this kind of opportunity to win the World Cup when you are not only the best team in the tournament by a country mile but everything from the conditions, pitches and crowds are in your favor too.

Funny thing is that India would have been favorites to win on a more balanced pitch. But they tried to get too smart for their own good and it backfired badly. This final defeat is as much on Rahul Dravid's head as it is on the players'.

Dravid is a curse for India. Indian fast bowling was outstanding right through the world cup more than spinners. Australian fast bowling was not that impressive at all. They got cartered all over by a lot of teams. Zampa was the only decent bowler for them.

Everyone knows the truth.Even ramiz raza helped ranatunga in 96 lahore finals.Ranatunga said In an espn interview that Ramiz came to him and asked the pitch preferences (He was the messenger from top,I believe imran).Ramiz did whatever he can do for srilanka. Ramiz and Imran were quite helpful for the Lahore pitch preparation.

Bro imran will be the king in the 96 after 92 wc whether he is in pcb or not. There was an espn cricinfo interview with ranatunga and he discussed the help he recieved from all quarters to achieve the cup. What is there to malign pak, they helped fellow sub continent team to ease past aus.

Buddy this was the same year Imran founded PTI, he was already into his political career and not occupied with cricket.

It's not about helping, you're accusing Pakistan of doctoring pitches when instead there were many other factors as to why Sri Lanka won.

This was a very strong Sri Lankan team, they had almost scored 400 in one of the games. They also beat India twice in the tournament: the famous match being the semi-final at Eden Gardens where the crowd couldn't stand India losing and resorted to light fires and throwing things on the field.

In the final, Sri Lanka won the toss and played with determination. Australia had refused to go to Sri Lanka to play. As I said, lots of factors but you with your anti Pakistan agenda focused on only one thing.

Dravid has been a curse for Indian cricket. As a player, as a captain, as a coach.

He hates fast bowlers, so has been working overtime to undo all the good things Shastri, Kohli and Bharat Arun did the previous 5 years. Shastri was like take the pitch out of the equation and used net bowlers like Natarajan and Saini to win a series in Australia. But Dravid has no confidence even in Bumrah, Shami. First thing Dravid did as coach was bringing back Unadkat and Sakariya from the dead.

Ranatunga is on record saying he asked Imran about the toss and Imran said bat first but Rana said we didn't and chose to bat second as felt stronger chasing

This is how Imran rigged it(?)

Let's assume what you're saying is true. Well then atleast Sri Lanka actually beat Australia in the World Cup final. India had the pitch in their favor and still couldn't beat Australia in the final.

I can say sanju Samson favourite pr line "in search of gold ,we lost a diamond " 🤣

India is one of the weakest teams on double paced, sluggish pitches. 2021 T20 World Cup also showed that. Team does much better on true surfaces, where there is pace and bounce, or quick, sharp turners.

The Ahmedabad final pitch reminded me of the UAE pitches from 2021 T20 WC, only that the torture was for a 100 overs game and not 40.

Irrespective of the nature of pitches, beating Australia in an ICC knockout is the toughest job in cricket, since it is so rare. Whenever Australia have been beaten in a World Cup final, it has been because of some ATG performances by Clive Lloyd, Aravinda de Silva, Yuvraj etc.

This Indian team didn't have any player who could give such a performance, maybe Jaiswal, Jurel or Rinku will in the future. Until that happens, one can keep wondering or coming up with theories. Beating this Indian side in the last 10 years in ICC semis and finals has been too easy and predictable. India is increasingly looking like the new South Africa, that South African side had big names, won 3 consecutive test series in Australia, 2 in England, two drawn series in India, series wins in NZ, Pak, Sri Lanka and every other place. But empty trophy cabinet.

Not this Australia. India should have decimated them. Cannot believe India failed to beat a side that has Labuschagne and Smith in the middle order. Declining fast bowlers.

2011 Australia was the weakest team they have ever sent to World Cups. Yet it took a super clutch ATG partnership between Yuvi and Raina to knock them out. And that was a damn strong Indian batting line up.

Trust me, if not for Yuvi and Raina, Australia would have won that World Cup as well.

But he was an eternal team player who played at an SR of 42 in Tests, and 71 in ODI's.
A mystery how such a mediocre player played 160 tests and 350 ODIs.

Kambli was discarded just because he failed once against Ambrose.

Pujara is twice the batsman Dravid ever was. His two series in Australia outweigh everything Dravid has done. In India no comparison because Dravid was a sitting duck against half decent spin.

Now he haunts us as coach, after the sabotage and treachery he did with Greg Chappell when he was captain.

Are you serious?

Are you serious?
As someone who followed his entire career including his legendary captaincy tenure, I have never been more serious.

All his backers like Ganguly, Sachin Laxman, Kumble were backstabbed by him for selfish reasons. Without Sachin and Ganguly he would never have had a career, Ganguly was kind enough to make him our keeper and take him to 2003 WC when his place was in doubt.

Trust me, if not for Yuvi and Raina, Australia would have won that World Cup as well.
No. It is Indian home conditions. We have had wood over them. One of the key aspect is India's team selection for the pitch. Travis head bowlnig 2 overs for 4 runs has nothing to do with Australia's clutch "performance". It is just that we have this familiar plot of shutting down the shop after 3 wickets gone in crucial game for the last 10 years as India's last 4 wickets won't yield more than 10 runs.

Ever since Yuvraj Singh played a slow innings in some T20 world cup, India has been doubtful on double paced pitches.

Not this Australia. India should have decimated them. Cannot believe India failed to beat a side that has Labuschagne and Smith in the middle order. Declining fast bowlers.
The fact that Australia are World Champions with Smith and Labusagne is more of a damning indictment of India than anything else.

Dominating the tournament and being the best team means nothing if you don't have what it takes to deliver when it matters most.

Australia getting utterly destroyed by England in the 2019 World Cup semifinal also doesn’t get talked about enough. Australia never had a sniff in that game in spite of all the pre match talk of their big game mentality and now they were going to knock out England.

It was either winning the ashes in eng or World Cup that year aussies choose ashes over World Cup any day. They know they can win world cups for joke anyway.

Yeah, they “chose” to lose the semifinal of the World Cup. I mean had they won the World Cup they wouldn’t have retained the Ashes. For some supernatural reason, the two events had to mutually exclusive.

Of course, England handing them a drubbing had nothing to do with the fact that England completely outclassed them on the day and put the history and the legacy of Australia’s famous big game mentality to bed.

They only won because Australia “chose” to retain the Ashes over winning the World Cup.

The award for the best post of the year goes to…..

World Cup Final Pitch Was Doctored? Rahul Dravid's Indian cricket team Coaching Staff Breaks Silence

The Indian cricket team is currently riding the high of of the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph. Rohit Sharma and his men ended a 11-year drought for an ICC title by beating South Africa in the final. However, few months ago the situation was completely different. India, seemingly invincible till that stage, lost to Australia in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023 in Ahmedabad. If the loss was not enough, a couple of months later, former India star Mohammad Kaif said that pitch had been deliberately made slow.

"I was there for three days. Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid inspected the pitch every day for 3 days ahead of the final. They stood beside the pitch for an hour every day. I saw the pitch change its colour. There was no watering the pitch, no grass on the track. India wanted to give Australia a slow track. This is the truth, even if people don't want to believe it," Kaif said on Lallantop in an interview.

Now, Viram Rathour, ex-batting coach of the Indian cricket team, who was there for both T20 World Cup 2014 and the ODI World Cup 2023, broke his silence on the issue.

"I've heard this story that the pitch was different, which I don't agree with at all. We played on similar wickets in the earlier matches as well. Matches against Australia, Pakistan and England were also played on slow pitches. The Ahmedabad pitch, however, eased out," Rathour told Sportstar.

It was India captain Rohit Sharma who won the toss and opted to bat first. Australia Pat Cummins, on the other hand, was happy to bowl first, knowing that the pitch is likely to get better as the day progressed.

"The feeling was that Australia had Pat Cummins, and Mitchell Starc, so India wanted to give a slow pitch, and that was our mistake. Many people say that curators do their own thing and we don't influence - that is rubbish. When you are moving around the pitch - you have to say just two lines - please don't put water, just reduce the grass. This happens. That is truth. And it should be done. You are playing at home. And we did it a little too much," Kaif added.
