[REPORT] Wasim Akram under fire, cybercrime complaint filed against Pakistan cricket great

A complaint has been filed against former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram for allegedly endorsing and associating with an online "gambling and betting" platform related to sports, an official said on Tuesday. A complainant, Muhammad Fiaz, has filed an application with the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) in Lahore, seeking legal action against Akram for allegedly promoting a gambling and betting app. He said the former fast bowler was linked with a foreign betting app — Baji — as its brand ambassador.

"A poster circulating on social media and a video clip show Wasim Akram endorsing the online platform, which has sparked interest among general users in the app," the complainant said.

He requested the NCCIA to take strict legal action against Akram under the Electronic Crimes Act of 2016.

An NCCIA official told PTI on Tuesday that it had received a complaint against Akram for being a brand ambassador of a foreign betting app and said, "We will take action against him if the allegations are found to be true."

Akram has not yet issued any statement regarding the matter. In connection with the promotion of the same online app, famous TikToker and YouTuber Saad-ur-Rehman, popularly known as Ducky Bhai, was arrested on Saturday.

Recently, Wasim Akram, Pakistan great and one of the most lethal pacers in the history of the game, was impressed by Mohammed Siraj and termed his performance against England as “the best" he has seen in the recent past.

"I rarely watch cricket when I'm not working, but I was glued to the last day. Siraj was full of hunger and passion – it was an incredible effort. To bowl nearly 186 overs across five Tests and still be that fiery on the final day shows remarkable stamina and mental strength. He's not just a support bowler anymore. He's leading the attack and doing it with heart. Even when a catch went down– that of Brook – he didn't lose focus. That's the mark of a fighter. Test cricket is alive and kicking," Akram said in an interview to Telecom Asia Sport.

Not sure about criminal. But I have a few lawyers in my family working in pakistan that are frequently frustrated by the system.

The court will state a certain verdict but then behind the scenes they will reverse that verdict without informing anyone and sweep it under the rug.

Often times it won't even reach the court as a case just won't manifest despite all evidence pointing towards a court case being mandatory in that situation.

I recently saw Wasim's video encouraging people to fund for 3rd Shaukat Khanum cancer hospital in Karachi. I knew he was in trouble because present regime can't stand any public figure portraying anything positive about Imran Khan.

This 'complain' is probably related to that. Its usually a scare tactic so Wasim should be fine in the end.

For promoting a gambling app? Lmao what a joke and what a waste of time. I guess the crooks and criminals dressed up in suits in Pakistan have nothing better or something useful to do.

This is most probably 'hard state' doing its work. A random nobody (Muhammad Fiaz) filing a case or a complaint against a public figure in Pakistan is generally a clear giveaway of who is pulling the strings.

Although, Wasim Akram shouldn't be promoting betting apps when they are clearly illegal.

Let me share the details what happened. In Pakistan and India, they tend to create hysteria on very little info. So the moment betting is mentioned, people think betting equals to match fixing. While betting is immoral act, but its not really illegal in some places. Imran Khan himself has admitted betting and being a betting advisor to his brother in law.

Now the issue is something else. In Pakistan there are few tiktokers and youtubers that got famous for their wealth. No one knows from there wealth was generated, but now its coming to light that there are binary trading companies that have such people as brand rep where they asked these influencers to show in their video they are using the binary trading app so that more people use that app.

Now i dont know in details what binary trading is, but a basic google search says that its basically how you place bets on sports you place bets on stocks/forex where you make a prediction that xyz will go up or down. To make it look authentic they have dashboards that show a graph to make it look as if you are an actual trader. Such traders are often known to be as scams.

In Pakistan such scams have been very common, where people are doing every stupid thing to make some money. The saad ur rehman or ducky mentioned is involved in this and so it Rajab Butt, another tick toker.

Now Akram case is different. He is brand rep for a sports betting company maybe. Now as long as the betting company is legal in some other country, i dont see any issue. Its like bet365. Only issue arrises if Akram is promoting in Pakistan as its illegal in Pakistan.

But because of the ducky case, where they claimed its a betting app, so now the hysteria has spread and in that hysteria they raised this case on Akram.

Im not sure about that. The ducky bhai one was being promoted in pakistan.

But the akram one i am not sure. I would assume it was made for some other country.

But yeh if it was being promoted in pakistan, than akram should rightly be charged
