[Reports] Mohammad Wasim appointed as Chief Selector for Pakistan

Media reports indicate that Mohammad Wasim has been appointed as Chief Selector for Pakistan.

No confirmation from PCB, yet.
 
Would be great if true. Although it would be sad to see him leave Northern.

Also he should definitely be Pakistan coach in the coming years.
 
Would have liked him to continue as Northern's coach and maybe grow towards Pak head coach role but, considering how good he has been with Northern he definitely deserves the job if he is comfortable in that role. Definitely someone with a great eye for talent and I hope he can deliver for Pakistan in the role.

This is a great decision if true. It's clear that he has an eye for talent if you look at the Northern squad.
 
Should also be the coach of Northern. Then it will be an excellent news.
 
Sad to see him leave Northern, but so happy for the upcoming batting talent in this country. Wasim has a very good eye for the modern game - he’s responsible for backing Saud Shakeel, Haider Ali, Zeeshan Malik, Ali Imran, Umar Amin, Nasir Nawaz, Abdul Faseeh, Mubasir Khan, and more.
 
Let’s hope that we start to see multi-dimensional Test selections now.

I would strongly prefer a team in which Hasan Ali knows that his runs are as important as his wickets.

It’s time to see the likes of Saud Shakeel, Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, Zafar Gohar and Sajid Khan prioritisised.
 
Was the only decent option tbh. Too many idiots around the Pakistani cricket circles.
 
If PCB indeed appoint M Wasim as the chief selector, the it would be an excellent appointment. However it is very sad that he is leaving as the Northern HC. He gave many opportunities to the youngsters and the way he inducted u19 cricketers like Abdul Faseeh, Mubasir Khan and etc, in the 2nd 11 and then promoted Mubasir to 1st xi was brilliant. His appointment will benefit many youngsters, as many will get opportunities and he knows the modern game and attacking brand of cricket that is played nowadays and on top of that he knows the domestic system inside out, which is brilliant.

But I wished he stayed as Northern coach for a yr and then replaced Misbah as the next head coach. He would have been promoted within the system,which will benefit Pakistan as he would know every player from domestic system. M Wasim would have been a good head coach as he knows how to manage his players and get the best out of them, on top of that give youngsters opportunities.

But still satisfied of this decision. I wish the best of luck to him. My duas are with him. Inshallah he will succeed in his role and who know he can still be our next head coach.
 
Would be a big loss for Northern and thus Pakistan considering the fact that most of our talent comes from that region.

Really hope this isn't true.

Who do you think should replace M wasim as the Northern Head Coach?

Should it be their assistant M.Masroor who has previously won many titles at Junior level as the head coach of Sindh? Or should they hire some former cricketer?

Me personally, I think they should hire Yasir Arafat. He has in the past applied for various roles within domestic level and international level, but has gotten rejected. Two days ago I had tweeted to him to apply for a role within domestic cricket level and he tweeted back and said he has and will continue to apply and also said he really wants to coach a domestic team. He has coaching qualifications and recently done a power hitting course in England with top coaches and famous power hitting coach Julian Wood.
 
Great to see him being given important job at PCB setup. Would have been nice had he replaced Misbah but still happy to see him at this very important job.

Both are fantastic suggestions. I’ll throw one more name into the hat: Umar Gul (though he should probably get the ECB certifications first).
 
I'm not happy with this. Not because he's not an excellent choice, but because it's still Misbah coaching his whatever his selections will be.

It's the right guy but the wrong timing.

Maybe this is a way to let him take on both roles if Misbah has further poor results and is let go, just speculating

It was great to have him in the domestic set up, really was. Need to see more inspirational up and coming coaches in Pakistan cricket like Waseem.

But thier less chance of mediocre players getting part of the squad
 
This guy is very close rashid latif, shoaib akhtar and dr noman, most likely he will prefer their opinions and options. Who knows sarfaraz maybe back as a capt

Hope Nouman is not picked for the SA Tests. Despite his 50 odd wickets in the QeA trophy I don't see anything special in his bowling. Sajid and Zahid are better options

He is good choice but I'm afraid every selector has demerits he is Azhar Ali's mentor and same goes for M Yousuf who says Asad shafiq wasn't given longer run in ODI.

How do you keep doing this all over again

Hasan Ali will never be a decent enough batsman to become AR. His maximum output can be 15 runs per innings and that's if he concentrates

Yasir Arafat was doing his ECB level 4 coaching certification. I am pretty sure he completed his ECB level 4 course, which is the highest coaching course in England and it's a two yr course. He has experience as bowling coach of BBL Perth Scorchers and many county cricket teams. He would be a perfect replacement of M. Wasim
 
Yasir Arafat would make an excellent coach. Widely experience, played cricket all over the world , was good batsman and very good bowler. Now very well qualified too. And, well spoke and level headed, at least I got this impression of him. Anyone who knows Yasir better ??

That's an impressive resume for any coach. Definitely ready to start with some head coach roles in FC or franchise cricket.

Nauman is definitely getting preferred over Sajid and Zafar, Mohammad Wasim rates him as the best left arm spinner in the country.

I’m not arguing for all-rounders.

I’m saying that no team can pick the best four bowlers.

You can pick one Number 11.

Your Number 10 has to be able to average 25 balls survived at the crease.

Your Number 9 has to be able to average 35 balls survived - a 40 minute partnership.

Your Number 8 has to be able to average 42 balls survived - a 1 hour partnership.

Your number 7 has to be able to average 60 balls survived - a 90 minute partnership.

You can’t pick Nauman Ali unless you drop Abbas and Shaheen and Naseem. Otherwise 200-6 will become 230 all out instead of 320 all out.

You also cannot pick Nauman unless he is the only player aged over 32: which means that to select him you have to drop Abid Ali and Azhar Ali and Yasir Shah.

Nauman averages 20 with the bat so he isn't a complete tailender. I'd obviously prefer Zafar, but Wasim is likely to pick Nauman over him.
 
Absolutely Brilliant!

Wasim and Abdul Rehman were always the top two names in recent years when it came to coaching. Glad they're now transitioning into more appropriate management roles.
 
I don’t know what I missed and when, but I certainly missed the memo of Mohammad Wasim becoming the messiah and savior of Pakistan cricket.

I can’t really say when he became the flavor of the moment, but the fans have been waxing lyrical about him for quite some time, even those he has been around in Dr. Nauman’s show for a while now.

Also, the way everyone is raving about this Northern Shorthern you would think that they are some sort of La Masia or Clairefontaine of Pakistan cricket that is filled with several future legends of Pakistan cricket unearthed by Mohammad Wasim.

Seems like the usual desperate stuff by the fans who are once again fantasizing and daydreaming.
 
Not sure if I’m sold on M Wasim but what matters more is cohesiveness between coach, captain, and selector. If all the stakeholders are succinct then you’ll see results. We’ve already seen what happens when you put in a selector like inzi with a coach like Mikey. If the people calling the shots are not on the same page then it’s an utter waste regardless of the pedigree of each individual. All the best to him though. Will be a miracle if a bunch of Pakistanis can actually work together for the greater good.

Good appointment, much better than Misbah as CS. Hope to see never see the likes of Imran Khan sr again

Younger players have the knack of performing well under him, will give Wasim that. Although his adamant support for Azhar Ali worries me slightly.

Poor decision. If Mohammad Wasim is to be hired - it should be as Head Coach not as Chief Selector. He's been a breath of fresh air in a hands on coaching role.

Instead you have two individuals in Misbah and Wasim with diametrically opposed brands of cricket occupying two important posts.
 
Great news. MW is the best candidate for CS role in Pakistan.

Now remove Misbah-Younis and appoint competent foreign head-batting coach.
 
so you take potentially the most exciting coaching talent in the country, and turn him into..... a selector. only in pak.

Yep. That's what worries me. Wasim would've been a great fit for the head coach cum selector role that Misbah previously occupied. This pairing of Misbah and Waseem is not going to work. One of them will eventually have to leave and I hope it's Misbah.
 
At least with this appointment, we're going to see some bold selections and some consistency and future planning in selection. Wasim seems to be that sort of fellow. Although, would've loved to see him in the head-coach role. Maybe he can take over once Misbah inevitably goes out of favor.
 
Not sure how the Misbah-Wasim Coach-Selector dynamic will work out. Should have just replaced Misbah to be honest.
 
Dawn of a new era In Sha Allah , would love to have seen him as head coach of the national team but still the best appointment from pcb since .. 1947 lol

He needs to be a given a role in domestic team even if its just for an assitant then progress up.yasir has enough qualifications now he needs experience in coaching.

as for replacement for wasim it should be his assitant preferably.

Real impressive post and tottaly agree i think misbah is on his last legs.misbah philosophy is different to wasim hope they can be on the same wave length

Absolute stunning that wasim is being made cheif selector very well desvered.misbah will have to change his mindset when picking the xi
 
I wished he would coach Northern for a year and then become head coach of Pakistan.

Anyway, still a better choice. I would now want Moin Khan (a good man manager) to become the coach after t20 World Cup.
 
The idea of one guy in charge was actually a good one. At least we knew where the responsibility lay, in future the 2 will just blame each other. Misbah should have been given the winter and if things didn't work out again, sack him and make M Wasim D of C.

He is the right man for the dual-role job that Misbah was doing.. Coach cum selector..

Not really.

He has revived fc careers of Hammad Azam and Nawaz who were in danger of drifting in wilderness they have never ever preformed as consistently as they have done under Wasim.

His biggest contribution is he has not been afraid to bring in young talents Haider Ali, Rohail and Zeesha Malik last year were givin their breaks in fc cricket by Wasim and now they are with the senior squad in NZL and this season he has taken even more punts with Nasir Nawaz, Munir Riaz Umair masood and now Muabshir Khan all getting their breaks in the senior team.

Some of domestic journeyman such as umer Amin, Nauman Ali, Faizan Riaz are enjoying the responsibility they have been givin and giving the best performances of their career.

Wasim is not perfect I for one feel he chops and changes the side a lot which makes it difficult to have a settled xi but he is by far the best and most visionary domestic coach in Pakistan.

I’m not sure how to react on this. Few Mo Was talks lots of sense, but months back in a show (or live commentary, or PP interview), he said that PAK did poor in SAF because wrong players were picked for wrong format, players picked for Test cricket in PSL performance basis ....... - partially true indeed, but then he used the example of Abid Ali & probably Kashif.

This part I am not sure - PAK domestic stats are still not settled enough that you can draw a conclusion when it comes to selection. I hope, the next CS will set a strategy (series by series), then chalk out the combination and then may fit players into that based on few factors - one of them definitely domestic/contemporary performance.

As of now, I’ll probably still say, almost 20 years back, Amir Sohail was the last PCB CS that impressed me what so ever. Yes, JZia was picked, but the guy fit into the combination perfectly for NZ tour, had domestic stats as well to back and he was the star performer of previous U19 WC for PAK.
 
Just to add a side note - if I’m ever to suggest a Pakistani Head Coach, I’ll pick Mo Hafeez, provided that guy prepares himself adequately. MoHa as Head Coach, and three specialist coaches to support ... otherwise.....
