Allan Border’s Australia were unfancied in 1987 World Cup. They had just lost the Ashes at home few months earlier.

It was a team composed of youngsters including Steven Waugh, Craig Mcdermott, Tim May, Veletta, Dean Jones etc.

Yet they only lost 1 group stage game and defeated hot favorites Pakistan at Gaddafi Stadium it was indeed a shocking result. Pakistan were the team to beat in 1987.

2021, Aaron Finch’s Aussies as usual unfancied, lost only 1 group stage match and defeated Hot favorites Pakistan in Dubai just like 1987 it was indeed a shocking result.

Aussies generally raise their game in big tournaments and should never be underestimated.

But looking back i do feel, Pakistan played good role in gifting Aussies 1987/2021 world cups which Ranatunga certainly did not do in 1996 Gaddafi.

Only to Pakistan fans though, most people knew Australia had the firepower to beat Pakistan.

Australians become ruthless in big games.

They have won finals/crucial knockouts against everyone.

In 87 against England/Pak.

In 99 against Pak. (This one will hurt forever)

In 03 against India. (India were the favorites! This will hurt Indians forever.)

In 07 against SL.

In 15 against NZ. (This will hurt Kiwis forever).

And these are just ODI world cup wins...

Credit to them. They have delivered historic phaintas to their rivals of that time :don

Of course Australia had the firepower to beat Pakistan, I doubt anyone doubted that. The point is that Pakistan were clear favourites, which everyone - Pakistan fans and beyond - knew.

Don't know about 87 but Pakistan weren't "clear" favorites by any means here. Pakistanis were very worried before the match and you can see it on this forum itself.

I know a lot of people rate Pakistan's 92 world cup, 09 T20I WC and 17 CT very high.

But I believe draw of multiple home/away against the great WIs and an ODI win against great Aussies of 00s (year 2002 tour) in their home has to the hardest thing ever done by our side.

Five out of five wins, including one win against tournament favourites and another against tournament finalists? Up against a team that was absolutely thrashed by England? I'm sure Pakistan were clear favourites.

Pakistanis being worried about the match isn't the bar for whether their team is the favourite or not. Naturally, a high-stakes, semi final would evoke those kinds of emotions.

The odds were at least 70-30 in Pakistan's favour.

Pakistan was favorite only if they won the toss. I will back most teams to win most games if they win the toss in this venue. T20 margin is anyway not that huge between teams and that's why we have so many winners in T20 WC. When you introduce toss being such a dominant factor then even a better team will struggle to win.

In day time game, I would back Pakistan to win over Aus.

Australia won the 1987 World Cup out of nowhere. They have also won this World T20 out of nowhere.

There is similarity. Yes.

How were Indians the favorite? Aus hadn’t lost a single match in that tournament.

It doesn’t hurt us as much coz we also knocked em out in 2011

I agree that Australia were in a better position to win after winning the toss. My point is that Pakistan were favourites prior to the match starting and any in-match factors, such as the toss, being decided. Obviously this changes when certain conditions during the match present themselves. But whether bowling or batting first, I felt Pakistan would be in a stronger position than Australia in the event that Australia had to do the same. This is due to recent performances and familiarity with the conditions.

India were not the favourites, aus won everything in that world cup. And that sri lankan team would have been more than satisfied to reach into the finals. Favourite were aus in that tournament too.

Between 1999 - 2007 : Australia were outright favorites ; gap was so big, that teams used to only think how big the margin of defeat would be

Winning T20 WC has given reboost to Australian cricket; they were playing lots of T20 cricketers in ODI and Tests. Now the likes of Maxwells, Marshs, will remain in T20 for long time and this gives Australia to reboot their teams

India were not the favourites at all. That Australia side was unbeaten and had been battering sides since 1999.

Correct. India bowled out for 136 in the preliminary round against Australia. That outcome forced Ganguly to choose to field on a uber flat deck.

Clear favorites to who? Not to people who put their money where their mouth is. All bookmakers once Australia won the toss had Australia as favorite to win the match at 80 paise i.e more than 55% probability to win the match. Prior to the toss, both were given same odds to win the match.

It was a strange tournament, baring one match against SA when Smith lit up the ground in 2nd inning, Australia didn't even once went over 40 paise odds to win a game i.e. their probability to win a game never went below 70%. So india was never the favorite, infact not even close.

In '03? Really? We were not favorites in that WC, by a long shot!

However I agree, this loss will hurt us for a long time. I've not yet got over it. Despite Aussies being runaway favorites in the finals, we could have probably come close to them. However 2 things let us down hugely,

1) Ganguly's pathetic decision to chase despite winning the toss;
2) Zak's expletive filled disastrous first over.

Majority of the pundits put Pakistan as favourites.

If u mean pundits on this forum, then I am not surprised. If you mean commentators then you shouldn't listen to them aa their job is to create hype based upon target audience. They will tell you only what you want to hear, the real pundits are the bookmakers, who come out with odds accounting for 100s of variables, the stupid commentators can't even think of anything else but match being decided on contests between "Starc vs Babbar" or "Warner vs Hafeez" that's not how a game gets played.

What the bookmakers who said India and England favourites?

What about them? I thot we were discussing here is whether or not Pakistan was the long favorite to win the match and not about whether bookmakers got it right wrt. India and England.

I dont see any resemblance to be honest . Other than the fact that Australia beat Pakistan in a Semifinal. You could say that Pakistan were unlucky in the T20 semifinal to lose the toss.
In '87, Australia were the better team. No 2 ways about it.

They were the long favourites before the toss if you disagree then that's your problem :)

The bookmakers got it miles wrong.
