What's the pitch like

A regular light brown colour, already showing some decent and regular bounce. The visible grass from a day or two ago seems to have gone. A few cracks but hard to say if they'll be significant.

Good to bat first no question, but some life for the good bowlers I'd say.

England batting first and that's not a good sign for SA with an inexperienced attack of Morris and Rabada.

Really good pace and carry for the bowlers but little deviation. This is a wicket for your metronomic short of a length bowlers - McGrath, Pollock etc.

Neither of the two debutants look out of their depth here but they should at this stage be 3rd and 4th seamers rather than 2nd and 3rd.

The toss and first hour mean that SA backs are really against the wall here.

England 76/1 at lunch. Very solid batting from england here early on.

England in driving seat...114/1...They need to play more aggressively now.

Hales gets his maiden 50 , must look for a ton here.

England might score another mammoth total here.

ground is full of Englishmen so expect the crime rate to increase as we are badly behaved on holiday

Superb delivery from Morkel and nicely taken from de Villiers. Hales gone for 60.

SA fielding has been below par for a while except that Morris catch.

Root has been a failure in last few tests

Got over hundred runs in the last test. He has a fine opportunity here. The SA attack is not great, and he is batting in the first dig under the sun on a wicket with true bounce.

Compton gone. Everyone getting in but will anyone get the Daddy hundred and convert a good start into dominance?

Root has been a failure in last few tests

Failed in one match, 3rd test in UAE, in the last four tests. Haven't got any hundreds but got close to 100 runs in all the remaining matches.

England scoring at a good rate today. S.A have bowled tight in spells but then at times have bowled to many hit me balls, they need to keep up more sustained pressure with the ball here.

Eng 183/4

Stokes starting to look good, huge six into crowd of piedt. Englands two most free scoring batsmen starting to build a good partnership here.

And Root's love affair with half century continues. OUT for 50..

Root has to convert these 50s into 100s if he wants to be the top batsman and compete with Kane, Smith, Kohli, Rahane, etc.

It was interesting when Hales and Compton were threatening to build a very strong base for England. The English commentators - especially the ex-pros - were borderline obsessed about the scoring rate, in particular whether Compton could score more quickly. So what if England had finished the day at 260-2, they'd be in a great position. rom the way England have batted it seems like they're infected with the same doubts.

He gets carried away with being to aggresive at times, its was a very loose shot to get out to

Compton, Hales and Root making good starts but failing to convert on a pitch that doesn't have too many demons. Good bounce and carry but SA will be satisfied with this.

With just three seamers it feels like SA are just filling time until the new ball. Trouble is it's allowed Bairstow to play himself inane these two to add 40.

One of two signs of sharp turn which will bother SA far more than England.

4 fours in an over, 17 runs in total stokes showing good aggresion here.

Poor field this from Amla, you need wickets and have a 2nd new ball, get another slip in.

S.A have been awful with the new ball here! england on the rampage with their scoring now 311/5

Is it a 50 over match? :13: England scored 73 runs in last 10 overs without losing a wicket! a run rate of 7.3 wow

I don't think he has even hit his peak yet. He is only 20. SA have a genuine prospect who could become Steynesque by the time he is 23/24.

Yes, this kid has potential, but i hope he won't regress. There is an other in Africa domestic Viljoen, we will see him soon in national team.

This is a pathetic game plan here, bowling short balls all the time and stokes is just hammering it around the park.

Morris has looked like a county standard bowler, really shows how bare S.A bowling resources are at moment

SA had England under pressure with the dismissal of Root, but this excellent cameo from Stokes has won the day for England.

Loose bowling especially from Morris and poor field placings this session.

Terrible field placing here by Amla. Five men back when he needs wickets

Eng 317/5 and in command. Excellent batting from bairstow and stokes.

S.A bowling mediocre most of the day and shambolic in the last session. Amla is a seriously poor captain and S.A just lacking discipline here.

Awesome day of test cricket....excellent counter attack from Stokes....guy is real asset in most pitches barring turners.

Brilliant stuff from England, SA on the ropes once again. Still quiet a bit of batting to come, if England push it they can get to 450

England's day in the end. Could have gone pear-shaped after tea, but shockingly ended up being quite a strong and dominant performance by them.

Largely down to Amla's captaincy which plumbed new depths of awfulness today. After England score 400+ tomorrow I am sure that 'Hash' will follow it up with another cheap dismissal.

Need to appreciate Stokes for taking risks in last 10 overs when normally batsmen start shutting shop, especially when you are 5 down.

This is his great value. He's not yet as good as a peak Botham with the bat yet but he's getting there.

This is the sort of the track that our Beard could come in and get a rapid 70 on.

It will be a huge achievement for cook if he could win a series this time in SA. A series victory in Aus, Ind and SA each will be enough to prove his legacy as a test captain.

Probably, but first innings here is crucial.

He didn't win in Aus, that was Strauss. Cook lost 0-5.

But wins in India and SA will put him in the same bracket as Nasser, Vaughan and Strauss.

I like him but he should step down. SA need his run-making power back and I think captaincy is cluttering his mind at the wicket.

Who should be made captain due you reckon?

Tough one. Not ABdV as he is thinking about test retirement and I would be lessening his workload. Maybe:

As much as I get the reference and the joke, on a serious note Zippy & Bungle from Rainbow would probably be an improvement as SA coach and captain at the moment.

Oh yes..!! Actually, Cook was man of the series in that Aus tour under Strauss captaincy.

Zippy would be much better than the current Bungle.

Incidentally, you and James really must look up "Rainbow Twangers" on YouTube. You will thank me forever!

I think the worst was immediately after lunch when Hales edged through the vacant 3rd slip area. Given that Hales had almost entirely scored through 2 areas - mid-wicket and through gully - and with his obvious weakness outside off it seems amazing that Amla could not have been more aggressive at this time. Especially when he had his seamers refreshed from the lunch break.

Eng playing some top quality cricket atm. Bayliss and Farbrace deserve a lot of the credit for the turnaround. Batting and bowling with a lot more purpose not just defend defend defend.
