What's new

Result : South Africa v England | 2nd Test | Jan 2-6, 2016 | Cape Town | Match Drawn

I can't help but wonder how this would have turned out if Steyn and Philander were playing.

That is lunch. This partnership was around 200 not too long ago. Now it's close to 300.

Current partnership 290 runs, 44.1 overs, RR: 6.56 (Bairstow 95, Stokes 180)

Last time these two teams faced off in Tests, Mighty Hash was on top of the world and annihilated England. How times change.

Moeen, Moeen Moeen, Moeen Moeen, Moeen Moeen Ali
Hashin, Hashin Hashin, Hashin Hashin, Hashin Hashin Amla

....to the tune of There's No Limit by 2 Unlimited.

The English abroad, eh?

Several hundred English fans now have fake beards, SA flags and are singing the Hashim Amla song.

They are South Africans

We're wearing Saffer tops

My and Robert and every other Englishman's congratulations to the think tank for not taking Ben Stokes to the World Cup.

I almost feel sorry for Peter Moores for the hand he was dealt.

Not all bad signs for SA

One

Number of SA pacers since 1992 who have conceded 100+ runs in an inns on Test debut. Steyn conceded 117 against Eng in Port Elizabeth. Morris 141/1

It was more of a thick tank at the time. But Moores made the situation worse by bringing in Ballance, batting Taylor out of position, and making Woakes first change on the eve of the WC after he had a lot of success with the new ball.

England were horrible then.He wouldn't have made any difference

You're only as good as your reserves. c.f. Ashes 2005 second test when a fading Gillespie and Kaspro and a scattergun Lee got hit for 400 in a day.

191 runs in a session against a newish ball.

Anyway, I hope Bairstow can get his century. Pile on 600 then declare.

Sa given their badly out of form batting lineup are heading for another defeat here, pure carnage in this session. Had doubts as to whether Stokes could be a quality Test bat at 6 but he's shone today.

For god's sake, I hope somebody in Pakistani think tank is watching this series and formulating plans, strengths and weaknesses we can target etc for next summer.

I'll be damned if this happens to us.

Depends on the wickets I think. We had three dry crusty tracks last summer so Stokes could tee off. It will be harder for him on traditional English wickets if there are any. Though he did hit that blistering ton against the Kiwis on such a track.

England should get around 650-700 and then declare in the evening, should be relatively simple to take 2 or 3 wickets before the close given the amount of South African fatigue and the sheer scoreboard pressure.

Never thought stokes was capable of this

An year ago when left out of the World Cup squad he smashed 150 odd in 60 odd balls for England lions vs South Africa A. Except Morkel others are still A' level bowlers similar to what he must have faced during that above mentioned innings.

Oh well done Jonny B!

Bet Bluey is looking down on you with pride.

Yeah but i always thought he is just another guy who can score few quick runs and get a wicket here and there but he clearly has proved he is more than that.

Has the pitch went flat? Bounce and a bit of a movement available last day was not to be found today.

The bowling has been pretty pants and also Stokes has played in extraordinary fashion.

Draco, Jimmy, FinnySteve and The Beard will be a bigger threat.

Flintoff has 5 hundreds and 3 fifers in 79 tests
Stokes already have 3 hundreds and 2 fifers in his 20 tests.

Apart from the 05 Ashes, England winning in South Africa and captaining in India - where (don't get me wrong) his contributions were enormous, and in the Ashes case will never be forgotten the world over - Frederick had a pretty mediocre career. And personally I was never a fan. He was world-class for 18 months or so, and average-to-good apart from that. Stokes is already a much better batsman than Flintoff; whether he can become a better bowler / all-rounder than him, who knows.

335 partnership for the sixth wicket. Hard to believe.

South African commentators sound more like they're playing for a declaration rather than predicting one right now :D.

Geez! I've not seen an SA test bowling attack so mercilessly thrashed like this since Gilchrist's heyday. But this is coming from England of all teams!

This has been brutal batting today, the umpires should declare the inns on englands behalf to save south africa any more humilation :)))

36 overs bowled today and 270 runs conceeded! its brilliant from england but just as pathetic from S.A at the same time

600 hundred up for england and the highest ever 6th wicket partnership in test history! well done!

Some times you can't do anything as bowling side

Some of the bowling has been shocking when captains got a certain field and your bowling short, full, wide, full, short, legside etc. all in one over then its just poor discipline. S.A have buckled under pressure here, just shows the lack of mental strength here with this current S.A team.

That drop somes up South africas effort in the field! a sitter from morkel!

That's what happens when extraordinary innings going on.

In last series between OZ & SA in Australia, in 2 matches OZ scored 160/170 in a session....once it's a counter attack ..

In last match SA hit back by hitting similar scores in a session.

SA fielders are having nightmares in the field. They would be doubting if they are playing at home or in England.

250 for ben stokes! well played! i did say before the series he would have a good one in these conditions

Rabada been treated like village club standard bowlers here. two sixes in a row!

:))) De villiers drops a sitter and then gets a lucky run out
