Well deserved, he’s been their best and most reliable player and has come on incredibly well since his early years.

What exactly has Kohli done wrong and Rohit done right?

Rohit has choked equally in must win games just like Kohli has, that too without the pressure of captaincy

Captaincy is difference. Kohli's woeful captaincy was displayed at various levels. I don't think he has not won any tournament as captaince since his under-19 win. Captained IPL for 10 years. Did not win once despite having outstanding players in his side. Same with Indian side in all 3 formats.

All the best RG Sharma. You will be under the pump right from day one.

It's Kohli's failure to win IPL and ICC events as captain.

Don't think that's it. I think the Indian players prefer Rohit as captain over Kohli.

If I was Kohli, I would give up the test captaincy as well because clearly his stock has fallen a bit and he should see the writing on the wall and just focus on his own performance

In white ball cricket Kohli has been a disaster of a captain.

He had a terrific team under him in 2017 CT, 2019 WC and 2021 T20 WC but failed to win any of those tournaments.

Also, under him the much hyped RCB never won a IPL trophy.

Rohit on the other hand has not only won numerous IPL titles for Mumbai but also won tournaments for India whenever captained - Nidahas Trophy, Asia Cup etc.

Under Kohli we also lost our streak against Pakistan and that was the final nail in his coffin.

Infact, under Kohli's captaincy we played Pakistan 5 times and lost 3 off them :asif

Compare that to the record Dhoni or Rohit has against Pakistan whenever they captained.

So Kohli's removal is totally correct and if anything he overstayed his welcome.

Kohli paying the price for the T20 World Cup aberration it seems.

No matter what or team full of IPL bullies and we will keep choke on big stage.

No century for 2 years is a real concern for kohli and he should rightly concentrate on his batting.Right decision to give white ball captaincy to sharma as he is in his best batting phase of his carrier.

No matter what or team full of IPL bullies and we will keep choke on big stage.

We'll never know until we try. It's Rohit's last chance to captain India at a World Cup and if he doesn't win, we will at least know that we tried and he didn't retire without ever captaining the side at an ICC event. Would be a shame if IPL's most successful captain never got that chance.

Kohli has officially been sacked as the ODI captain. WOW

Rohit is the better tactician, but someone of Kholi stature would not take this lightly.

I think if they’ve done this may as we let him focus on batting and appoint Rahane or Rohit for Tests.

Shocking they pulled the plug on him though

Haha sour grapes for mamoon according to him this could never happen until kohli retired. Since kohli is the greatest ever cricketer to represent India he was bigger than Indian cricket. He would never let anyone sideline him. Oh well wake up and smell the cofffee mamoon that 152-0 that you called a fluke has cost kohli him captaincy and possibly his career too. That aside well deserved of Rohit the real captain he actually has achieved a lot more as a captain than kohli has even though kohli has been the primary captain. Kohli has not achieved zilch in odis or t20s as captain for India but he’s been a decent test captain. Good news for India and bad news for Pakistan Rohit ain’t gonna let us win anything till he’s there good luck Rohit.

So, who will be the long-term replacement then?

Because Rohit Sharma was an obvious choice but who will be the long-term option once they are done with Rohit.

Tbh this has nothing to do with results. It has more to do with his attitude, behaviour, my way or high way approach, team mates feeling more at ease with Sharma vs a gltizy starry life leading Kohli.

It will likely be Pant as he is the only one to be in the starting XI for sure. Others are getting older. Bumrah is the only other option. But being a fast bowler he could miss matches in between.

Split captaincy wasn't going to work in limited overs so a good decision.

Kohli can focus tests now primarily and play limited overs as specialist batsman.

This is highly disrespectful and in poor taste. Kohli is the greatest ODI player of all time and over the past 10 years, he has won more matches for India than all other players put together.

The least that he deserved was the opportunity to lead India in the home World Cup in 2023 and then sign-off as captain with dignity and respect.

Nevertheless, this is not surprising because it has been obvious for a year or so that there is an anti-Kohli lobby within BCCI and they have been waiting for an opportunity to pounce.

Kohli’s prolonged slump and the disastrous WT20 has given them the perfect opportunity to strike when the iron is hot.

They are probably itching to remove him as Test captain as well, but Kohli is not giving them an opening because his legacy and the greatest Asian Test captain of all time continues to grow bigger and bigger.

LOL I see you now gone from greatest captain of all time to greatest test captain of all time while the rest of the world knows that he has failed massively as a captain. Rohit should have been captain all this time and India would have won Test championship and at least one ICC trophy.

Now that Rohit is VC means he is effectively going to captain the test side as well. And Kohli is reduced to what he has been mostly a dummy captain.

you must be in a worse state than him right now “legacy” “greatest” “player” “Asian” “all time” get out of this repetitive delusion no one believes this except for you not even the BCCI or a single Indian fan on this forum wake up and smell coffee Mada.

He has been reduced to dummy captain status in test as well with Rohit promoted to VC status. I feel kohli should resign and try to maximize his batting talent while he still can.

Rohit is not VC to be future captain as he is same age or older than kohli he is there to captain now if they had confidence in kohli they woud have given VC to someone younger.

In tests, No. Rahane was vice captain so he has just been sacked as vice captain and replaced by Rohit. The test captaincy isn't going anywhere from Kohli. He was magnificent in that Lords Test.

I wonder how Kohli will deal with sudden shift of limelight and how will he carry himself on field given he's used to being treated as "Big Bhai" on and off field. With exception of Sachin who humbled and instead enjoyed and focused on his batting, I've seldom seen stars like this absorb such decisions. He's the figure who likes to be seen top man by public, he likes to be in leadership position, Let's see.

If he keeps averaging 25 in test cricket - he will lose test captaincy soon

Pant :))

Another IPL bully and overrated LOI player.

We all know that how irresponsible he was in 2019 wc SF and in WTC final.

he himself can't score a run to save his life, forget about LOI captaincy.

Why would they sack Rahane and make Rohit VC who is older than Kohli if they had confidence in his abilities? Usually if the captain is undisputed the VC is much younger so he can be groomed for future. Rohit has been tasked to help (or make the more important decisions on behalf of Kohli)

Pant is rated highly for what he did in Sydney and Brisbane. That win is rated as one for the ages, much greater than any T20 win or even the WTC Final.

Just like how Rahane is enjoying the govt. job privileges of the Melbourne test hundred and winning India test series vs full strength Australia in Australia with half side injured, in a same way, Pant probably will be enjoying similar privileges.

Take this instance, for example, Shreyas Iyer took Delhi Capitals to their first ever IPL final and before that, he took them to playoffs after like 7 years( Delhi Capitals were basically Zimbabwe of IPL) but come 2021, when he was injured, Pant got the captaincy and the same year once he came back fit, he found that his captaincy was gone for once and all. Pant was sticked with captaincy and his team got knocked out in semi finals even though it was a better team than the previous year. Yet, DC are retaining Pant and have released Iyer.

Basically, these are first of the many privileges that Pant gonna get in Indian team for winning that test series in Australia 2021. I won't be surprised if he gets the captaincy two years later even though there might be more youngsters with better leadership skills.

It is simple. Because Rahane doesn't merit a place with his 39 test average and hence first they sack him from VC and now a couple more failures and he will be dropped.

Okay but why would they make Rohit captain if he has no realistic chance of captaining in future? Or not going to make big decisions for the team now? He has been made captain to lead now not 5 years later or else they would have made someone like Pant VC to gain experience and learn from Kohli.

Pant is very good Test player, I am not denying that.
But he is highly overrated in LOI and failed every time.

IPL performance is irrelevant but he is average in IPL as well.

If Kohli takes rest or goes for his second child birth, then Rohit will be a good backup captain option for a couple of years now. They would not throw Pant to the Indian captaincy this earlier. There is time for that.

He is rated there based on potential and also getting rewarded for that performance in Gabba and Sydney.

Pant is ideal after Kohli.

They do not have confidence in Kohli or they may be suspecting kohli career is coming to an end etc personally if I was kohli I would give up captaincy and maximize my runs for the 3/4 years he has got left in him.

They fancy his leadership skills which are not in doubt. Rohit is India's best candidate as a leader for some time and should have been captain over Kohli long ago.

What has he won in tests that India could not have won without him? At one time you were caught comparing him to Imran khan lol

Good decision.

At least 2 years too late though.

Better than Imran in Tests.
What is your point?

Imran was not test captain he was a true leader of men in all formats. In-fact by saying that a person can only captain in one format means he is not much of a leader at all. The only time a good leader would captain one format and not other is if he cant make the side in one of the formats. Kohli or Imran never had problems making any side and its been openly said here and on many forums etc that Kohli captaincy leaves a lot to be desired.

Kohli has not won anything in tests that India could not have won without him. He won a test series in Australia his best result as captain, Rahane who has been sacked won against a stronger Australia side with depleted Indian side where Kohli had the strongest possible Indian side available to him against depleted Aus side.

KL Rahul may be the limited overs captain after Rohit. He may also get the test captaincy if he retains his spot in the test XI.

Rohit will be an abject failure as a captain. Just because he has success in a pyjama entertainment league doesn't mean he's cut up for the international circuit, plus his age is against him both mentally and physically. He's away international centuries is proof of his failures and his inexperience, how many? Exactly.

These are silly lines and subjective. End of the day stats are matter.

Kohli was the first Asian captain to win the Australia series in Australia.
He won England series (Partially)

We are talking about Kohli vs Imran stats in Tests and you bringing Rahane instead of taking about Imran stats :qdkcheeky

How do you decide without giving him a chance?

Kohli won a series in Aus vs a C team, and then fled home when India won the second series. Fluked it the first time round, rode the coattails the second time round.

No we cant compare Imran and kohli who has by most people admission a terrible LOI captain. You are either a good captain or you are not. Even in test his achievements has been pout into perspective by a sacked captain.

I feel strongly about this as I am actually someone who was very vocal even when kohli first became captain that he is not leadership material.

Please read again. We are talking about Kohli vs Imran in Tests.

Kohli >>>>> Imran in Tests

Please do not disrespect Kohli by comparing him to a captain who only won 14 Test matches and lost to Sri Lanka in the 80s when they were minnows.

Sri Lanka only won 2 Test matches in the entire decade. It is akin to losing a Test to Afghanistan today.

Kohli has 39 Test wins as captain. Almost 3x more than Imran. Only 3 captains in history have won more matches.

Kohli left Imran behind as a captain long ago. In fact, Imran was not even the best Pakistani captain of his era. Miandad was a better tactician and won the same number of matches as Imran in lesser games.

He was also a better team man and never put himself above the team which Imran always did.

Miandad lost the captaincy battle to Imran because Imran came from an affluent background, spoke English and was far more presentable than the former.

Kohli is the biggest reason behind the establishment of India as the greatest Asian Test team.

He brought an aggressive attitude to the Test team that was lost under Dhoni after Ganguly revolutionized the team and introduced a fast bowling and fitness culture that India never had.

He has changed the mindset and attitude of Indian cricket forever. As far as the notion that he has quality players at his disposal which is why he wins, yeah the sky is blue.

Every successful captain in history needed quality players, but what matters is how you manage them.

Clive was lucky that he had talents like Viv, Marshall, Holding, Roberts etc. at his disposal. Waugh and Ponting were lucky that they had McGrath, Gilchrist, Warne and Ponting himself.

Imran was also lucky that his captaincy coincided with the emergence of once in a generation talents like Wasim and Waqar, and sure Imran played a big role in mentoring them, but you cannot polish a ****.

If a player does not have high ceiling, no amount of mentoring will make him world class. There were plenty of mediocre players in Pakistan at the time and Imran’s mentoring didn’t help them become world class.

Morgan is fantastic white ball captain but he wouldn’t have won the World Cup if he didn’t possess the finest white balls players English cricket has ever had.

Dhoni wouldn’t have won the World Cup without the great players that he had at his disposal, and I can go on and on.

Kohli has brought the best out of his players and that is what matters. Ishant Sharma was a laughing stock under Dhoni before Kohli turned his career around. He produced world class numbers between 2015 and 2019 and the influence of Kohli’s leadership was obvious.

Learn to respect real greatness. 39 Test wins and counting do not come free. Kohli is an absolute giant of the game and an inspirational Test leader in every sense of the word.

We have to agree, Kohli brought out the best of his players. Failed to win a WCT20 despite IPL, failed to win an ODI WC, failed to win WTC final. Failed to take a wicket vs Pakistan in WCT20 2021 - all failed as captain.

Ceiling must be low.

I am a big fan of Kohli and his status as ATG cricketer is never in doubt. But he is a changed man now...marriage has made him weak. The x-factor and aggressive intent that made Kohli the cricketer he is, is long lost. Captaincy in every format is only burdening him more and I think its the correct decision to get rid of some load from him. He has max 5 years of cricket left in him and without captaincy pressure if we can get back the old Kohli the batsman it will be great for team India.

My only worry is they don't remove him from the team as well like how Dhoni cornered Sehwag/Gambhir from the team. Its no secret that Rohit and Kohli are not friends but I hope their personal clash dont come in between their profession. Kohli is still the best white ball batsman we have and has a lot to give to the team. I know few media houses in India want him to be dropped from T20 team all together but they are stupid. Virat is a big match player and deserve a spot in the team in all 3 formats.

It's no coincidence Kohli's been in decline since he decided to to become a vegan in 2018.

Should retire after this sacking. It’ll be humiliating for someone of his stature.

Oh boy oh boy you might be the anushka that kohli really needs. His own PR team doesn’t believe in him as much as you do. Kohli Bhai this is your guy hire him right now issey achey appkey koi nahin Utha saktha that even free of charge. What else could kohli have asked for at this worrisome stage in his career nothing better than a mamoon.

What a fall for Kohli though. From a man who was once considered the untouchable in Indian cricket, to getting binned as the captain without even a proper statement from the board. There are reports that the BCCI gave 48 hours for Kohli to relinquish his ODI captaincy but he refused to do so. Kohli challenged the BCCI to sack him the BCCI did just that.

The fractures in the team relationship with Kohli had been developing steadily apparently and the players weren't happy with Kohli's chop and change attitude where a player could get dropped for a test just like that. Apparently even Shastri, who was Kohli's yes man, and Kohli was not on talking terms by the end of the England tour. A lot had been going behind the scenes which was hidden but it's all unravelling now in spectacular fashion. I can't see how Kohli can play in the team with the same passion and energy as team bonding is huge for success.

The last Indian captain to get sacked from captaincy was Ganguly iirc.

Thala always had great support from the higher ups:srini

Tbh Kohli's captaincy is not needed in any format. Freeing him up and allowing him to focus primarily on his performance in whatever time he has left in the game is only going to benefit him and Team India.

He has only himself to blame. You can't ruffle so many feathers, good leaders take people on board but Kohli has destroyed relationships within the team. I am not surprised at reports that the Indian players told the BCCI that they felt more at ease with Rohit Sharma as captain.

why didn't they select washington sundar and shardul thakur...these selectors are idiots

So you’re saying some players might have underperformed in the T20 World Cup on purpose because of all this?

“Whine” haha you know who’s whining ur greatest kaptain of all time he begged the bcci not to sack him but they did that’s how much his greatness is in India and here you are putting him on thrones. You can never be bigger than the game bud never even kohli wasn’t.
