Rohit Sharma - Captain of India in all formats

Make no mistake, the BCCI wouldn't have the balls to do this if it was headed by Anurag Thakur or the CoA that was before him. I don't think it has anything to do with Jay Shah. The cricketing side of the decisions are all under the control of Ganguly. Only he has the guts to take a decision like this.

Perhaps this is the bossman's way of giving payback to Kohli for humiliating his friend and ex teammate in inglorious fashion (Kumble). If you can discard a legend just like that using your power, it can also happen to you when your powers are waning, is probably the lesson bossman wanted to teach:dada

The last Indian captain to get sacked from captaincy was Ganguly iirc.

Thala always had great support from the higher ups:srini

Virat Kohli refuses to step down, BCCI cracks whip, opts for proven leader in Rohit Sharma

The BCCI, it is learnt, waited for the last 48 hours for Kohli, who has already relinquished T20 captaincy, to voluntarily step down from ODI leadership as well but he did not. By the 49th hour, losing the position to Rohit Sharma was simply 'fait accompli'.

what a clown :)):))

If a lot was going on behind the scenes players weren’t happy with kohli and we know majority of the Indian team is Mumbai Indians players who play under Rohit it is something you can’t rule out.

All players deliberately underperforming in a nefarious plan to oust the captain is too far fetched. These are all professional players at the end of the day.

But yes, a toxic team environment when players are not in talking terms can affect the performance of the team, especially in a tournament as team bonding is one of the foremost requirements of a successful team. Looks like Kohli had ended up becoming a KP like unpopular character within the team.

Mumbai lobby are capable :))

Kohli should just focus on his cricket now, his ego clearly got too big.

With that performance as a captain you cannot survive.

This was on the cards. Kohli was not getting along with his team mates. He was not getting along even with Shastri in the England tour.

Kohli must understand that this is not Bollywood where if you are a star you have a lobby and you are untouchable. BCCI asked kohli to voluntarily step down, but seems he wanted to challenge the bcci and didn't step down. They sacked him.

Kohli was the worst Indian captain since Tendulkar, it's a miracle he got such a long rope. Has achieved virtually nothing in LOI.

Both are just recovered from injuries, not 100% fit.

Washington just played a domestic test match yesterday. He should have been picked , especially with the absence of Jadeja. Very poor decision from selectors.

What a fall for Kohli though. From a man who was once considered the untouchable in Indian cricket, to getting binned as the captain without even a proper statement from the board. There are reports that the BCCI gave 48 hours for Kohli to relinquish his ODI captaincy but he refused to do so. Kohli challenged the BCCI to sack him the BCCI did just that.

The fractures in the team relationship with Kohli had been developing steadily apparently and the players weren't happy with Kohli's chop and change attitude where a player could get dropped for a test just like that. Apparently even Shastri, who was Kohli's yes man, and Kohli was not on talking terms by the end of the England tour. A lot had been going behind the scenes which was hidden but it's all unravelling now in spectacular fashion. I can't see how Kohli can play in the team with the same passion and energy as team bonding is huge for success.

:)))

What a boss move.

Loving it.

Too bad the test squad still is weak.

Any chance of sacking him from test captaincy?

We carry 3-5 passengers each game.

Never loose to Pakistan. That's the rule BCCI follows.

If that was true, he would have been fired after the CT 2017 final loss.

Maybe hard for you to believe, but BCCI is not obsessed with Pakistan.

This is bad move by bcci, I was against Virat after 2017 champions Trophy but look like I have to defend him.
First of all Sharma shouldn't be t20 captain, a person who was the reason for the loss in t20 world Cup should not have been given captaincy.
Again they should have appointed Sharma as loi captain in 2019.
This move reminds me of Ganguly sacking in 2005 which led to india failure in 2007 world Cup.
Now if Kohli is sacked because of Rohit Sharma then Kohli should not be part of loi Or there will be grouping because of the nature of sacking and Sharma bad performance against Nz and Pak in world Cup.
Same way Sharma should not have been test vc, hell I don't want Sharma in test team because of difference between him and Virat, only format team that is performing will be divided.
I don't trust BCCI selectors they didn't selected Chahal in t20 lol. They should have selected Sharma in 2019 or after 2023.
They botched it completely

What has he won in tests that India could not have won without him? At one time you were caught comparing him to Imran khan lol
Kohli didn't got some great team, I don't remember team was what 6 or 7 th ranked when he got captainship.
Apart from Bumrah all the bowlers were same but Kohli changed the test team.
It is not like Pointing situation but more like Border or Taylor one.

Not yet. But kohli doesn't have too many fans in the BCCI top brass. And Dada and Shah are no yes men.

I assume Ganguly doesn't suffer failure gladly. The pathetic performance of India in the CT 2017 and Test WC needed some response.

Kohli should have remembered that while he is India's most successful Test captain, the winning attitude of the Indian Test team was restored by captain Ganguly after the disastrous 1990s with the Dungarpur/Azarhuddin gang.

I still love Kohli as a player, but feel he is a bit over his head when it comes to captaincy. Rohit has a far superior record as an IPL captain.

We used to loose all finals in Ganguly captaincy, sacking of Virat in loi is right and it should have been done in 2017 or 2019 but the way things were managed, it is completely wrong.
Now please dont select Virat in any loi team

The Test captaincy taken off Kohli soon also?

Did Virat think he had Indian public backing behind him?
What was he thinking lol

Indian Fans are Brutal, Dhoni got us everything and yet we wanted his head for the longest time(rightly so, but we clearly missed his inputs in the field in last tournament).

Not sure why Kohli thought he could get away with such terrible LOI performance.

The greatest Indian test captain ever is without a doubt Saurav Ganguly and in limited overs, it is MS Dhoni.

Virat Kohli is the most successful Indian test captain though.

It is a pain for me to say as a Ganguly fan but I think Kohli is best Indian captain, the only captain who most of the time dared to play 5 bowlers which something Ganguly didn't.
Don't know why but at Ganguly time with the great batting resources we should have gone for five bowlers, which cost us some series

Were there 5 bowlers good enough to be included in the Indian team during Ganguly”s time?

Depends upon matches, for example India should have played 5 bowlers in Sydney 2004 when they were going to play Murali as a second spinner.
With Karthik not bowling well it was only two pacers and one spinner left for India. Because of too much overload in the end Agarkar and Kumble both break down later in odi series. Balaji should have played that match

Informative, thanks for your reply.

Why you are talking about LOI? Who said Kohli is great captain in LOI format?

Please read again. We are talking about Kohli vs Imran in Tests.

Kohli >>>>> Imran in Tests

But when it comes to leader there is nothing called in tests or in LOIs only. Leaders are leaders or they are not. Kohli has been nothing special as a captain / leader in two of the formats and the other format he has achieved nothing that others from his own team could not achieve.

Kohli was the worst Indian captain since Tendulkar, it's a miracle he got such a long rope. Has achieved virtually nothing in LOI.

Well he does have 1x 50 over world cups wins against Pakistan. He didn’t flop the scene in this regard at least.

Two decisions in the last twelve months will have a detrimental impact on Kohli's legacy as test captain:

1. Quitting the Australian tour after the first test, which set the stage for arguably India's greatest ever series win

2. Backing the decision to quit the England tour to fly over to the UAE ahead of the IPL, and voluntarily relinquishing the unique opportunity to win consecutive away series in Australia and England

He's taken his eye off the big picture for a while, and I doubt he cares how he'll be viewed when he retires from the game.

I seriously don't think they are even comparable. Ganguly is a better captain in all formats. Better in tests and far better in ODIs.

You can't disregard a fact that he took the team messed up with the whole match fixing saga to World Cup 2003 final and only lost to the invincible Aussies side compared to Kohli's India who often lost to the likes of Pakistan and New Zealand of current era in the knockouts .

Indians have not forgotten Kohli flopping in 3 ICC LOI tournaments as a captain. Kohli likely overestimated his popularity.
I don’t think BCCI cares what Indian fans think while choosing the team combination. I remember Indian fans hating and abusing Jadeja in his initial years and still he was in the team. Kohli got the boot due to non-performance. Had he won the 2019 WC or 2017 CT, he would still be captain.

and this is after having the luxury of two ATG elite LOI batsman and a world class pace bowling attack.

I was talking about test team, to be fair when he took the test team captaincy, team was loosing left right and centre, I think team was ranked 6th Or 7 th.
Indian hasn't even won in Srilanka also in test

Ab Fan
January 2015, India had suffered yet another overseas loss and had slipped to number 7 in the ICC Test rankings. Virat Kohli managed to secure a draw at the SCG pink Test in his first game as a permanent captain of the Indian side.

Four years later, the same captain but with a grey beard is on the Australian soil as the leader of the number 1 Test team. A lot of things have transpired in these four years, and Kohli has played a significant part in taking India to number 1 from number 7.
According to one article, so I was right about ranking

and this is after having the luxury of two ATG elite LOI batsman and a world class pace bowling attack.

Don't forget spin. Kohli was serviced for over 2 years by Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav in LOIs, who were demolishing teams in LOIs for a good amount time.

There is a reason behind it.

India were going through a complete transition phase between 2011-2014. They simply didn't had anyone at that time at their peak to produce results overseas except Dhoni who was a poor outside home conditions test match captain.

By the time Kohli got the captaincy, the Pujara's, Vijay's, Ashwin's and Jadeja all were established players. It was around 2014-15 that India were back to having everything , i.e, batsman, spinners and pace bowlers.

No doubt he did backed the pacers very well but a lot of the credit goes to the years of investment been put over building the right pace bowling culture in the Indian team. Just backing your pacers don't change them from hopeless to world class all of a sudden. India have been lucky to invest in building the pace bowling culture because of allt he revenues being generated and this is what helped Kohli win matches overseas.

This was a luxury which Ganguly era simply didn't have and yet he was the first one who taught India how to win test matches overseas. India on a total tally of 0 tests overseas in 90s and come 2000s, it was him who turned things around.

For all said and done, one thing that will always go against Kohli is that even after having everything on his side, he didn't dominated overseas the way he could as visible by the losses he had in England, South Africa and New Zealand because his win ultimately came in Australia in the absence of Smith and Warner and him skipping the 2020 tour of Australia has a massive influence in it, especially, leaving the series after being part of the 36/9 fiasco. That goes against him big time.

Please do not disrespect Kohli by comparing him to a captain who only won 14 Test matches and lost to Sri Lanka in the 80s when they were minnows.

Sri Lanka only won 2 Test matches in the entire decade. It is akin to losing a Test to Afghanistan today.

Kohli has 39 Test wins as captain. Almost 3x more than Imran. Only 3 captains in history have won more matches.

Kohli left Imran behind as a captain long ago. In fact, Imran was not even the best Pakistani captain of his era. Miandad was a better tactician and won the same number of matches as Imran in lesser games.

He was also a better team man and never put himself above the team which Imran always did.

Miandad lost the captaincy battle to Imran because Imran came from an affluent background, spoke English and was far more presentable than the former.

Kohli is the biggest reason behind the establishment of India as the greatest Asian Test team.

He brought an aggressive attitude to the Test team that was lost under Dhoni after Ganguly revolutionized the team and introduced a fast bowling and fitness culture that India never had.

He has changed the mindset and attitude of Indian cricket forever. As far as the notion that he has quality players at his disposal which is why he wins, yeah the sky is blue.

Every successful captain in history needed quality players, but what matters is how you manage them.

Clive was lucky that he had talents like Viv, Marshall, Holding, Roberts etc. at his disposal. Waugh and Ponting were lucky that they had McGrath, Gilchrist, Warne and Ponting himself.

Imran was also lucky that his captaincy coincided with the emergence of once in a generation talents like Wasim and Waqar, and sure Imran played a big role in mentoring them, but you cannot polish a ****.

If a player does not have high ceiling, no amount of mentoring will make him world class. There were plenty of mediocre players in Pakistan at the time and Imran’s mentoring didn’t help them become world class.

Morgan is fantastic white ball captain but he wouldn’t have won the World Cup if he didn’t possess the finest white balls players English cricket has ever had.

Dhoni wouldn’t have won the World Cup without the great players that he had at his disposal, and I can go on and on.

Kohli has brought the best out of his players and that is what matters. Ishant Sharma was a laughing stock under Dhoni before Kohli turned his career around. He produced world class numbers between 2015 and 2019 and the influence of Kohli’s leadership was obvious.

Learn to respect real greatness. 39 Test wins and counting do not come free. Kohli is an absolute giant of the game and an inspirational Test leader in every sense of the word.

Look at your essays, haha he has been sacked accept it and move on.

Virat Kohli was keen on stepping down as captain in both T20is and ODIs to focus on his batting. (Reported by TOI).

So test match captaincy doesn't impact his batting but T20 & ODI captaincy does?

So test match captaincy doesn't impact his batting but T20 & ODI captaincy does?

Kohli has messed up team selection lots of times in LOI. He has experimented far too often with the batting order and has made lots of bad fielding decisions in LOI tournaments. No such issue in test where he can afford to make up for mistakes and the test team is pretty stable anyway. He does well in bilateral LOI where there's no elimination round. But in tournaments like CT, WC, T20WC and IPL, he is a huge failure as a captain.

Removing a 33 year old guy from captaincy to appoint a 34 year old guy captain who will be 35 by World T20 (2022) and around 36 by World Cup (2023) looks more like a stop gap arrangement.

India really needs to develop some younger leaders who are performers as well for the future.

It is a stopgap arrangement. India wants to try their luck at 2023 WC with Rohit who has the experience and skill, but not the opportunity. Rohit can either step down or be sacked regardless of WC result. In the meantime, somebody new can be vice-captain for grooming.

Good decision by BCCi. Rohit has led Mumbai to many victories as well won Nidahas trophy as captain .Also Kohli can now play his natural game under his captaincy . It’s also fair to say that he had fair amount of time to lead India in LOI but his inability to win key ICC events could have led to this decision . Also Rohit has this uncanny nack of winning crucial tosses whereas in case of Kohli I am sure the graph would be inwardly skewed .

What this has done is to open the door for Indian selectors to drop him from white ball teams if they feel his form isn't good enough for someone who is now simply just a team member.

All in all, a good decision, however 2 years too late.

Awesome news. Indian cricket will do much better in the absence of the megalomaniac. As such he doesn't deserve to be in the playing XI of our white ball teams.

Rohit has excellent man management skills, great developer/mentor of young talents, and cool as cucumber. Fully expecting him to deliver one ICC trophy in the next 2 years. Wish BCCI had taken this step 2 years ago.

Was always a big fan of batsman Kohli but he has done more damage than good for Indian cricket as captain. Hope this humiliation changes him for the better and fires him up to mount a resurgence in batting.

This is terrible news for world cricket, India might actually win an ICC event.

Kohli comes off as a bad leader in that times article, Rohit and Dhoni both better big brother types who you could chill with.

Sounds like damage control from Kohli's camp. No chance his ego would let him step down before the 2023 WC where the tournament could have been career defining for him. In the end BCCI made the decision for him and the glory if India does win will be for Rohit now.

Kohli will always be known as the captain who lost the streak.

No more mauka ads because of kaptain :kohli

I doubt. The broadcasters care about money and I am sure their creative team will come up with some new ad next time. May be an advertisement in which Pak character teasing Indian character for last match.

Lol at some people who think VK has been replaced as ODI captain due to losing against Pak in T20 WC or people who think VK will be dummy captain in tests after Rohit appointed as vice captain.

He has been replaced in LOI because he failed to win any ICC trophy during his stint and Rohit has been very successfull as IPL captain. 2023 will be last WC for Rohit and management wants to give one chance to Rohit else they would have been criticised for years to not appoint Rohit as captain and persisting with Kohli.
Kohli tried to oversmart BCCI by declaring on social media that he'll step down from T20 after WC but continue to lead test and ODI.
As usual BCCI/Ganguly didn't care and took the right decision. Because it doesn't make any sense having different captain for two limited over format.

BCCI would have faced criticism from all directions if Rohit somehow wins T20 WC in 2022 and VK stayed as ODI captain and loses 2023 ODI WC.

Logic of being dummy captain in tests after Rohit's appointment as VC is very funny. In fact it's the post of VC which is a dummy position and come in action only when captain is not available due to injury or some reason. Rohit has replaced Rahane who is playing poor cricket for long and is few matches away from getting dropped. Pujara is facing same fate as Rahane and there is no other young player who can be obvious choice for VC.
Forget about leading Rahul, Gill, Mayank, Vihari, Shreyas etc all are fighting for permanent place in playing eleven due to cut-throat competition.

The way India is performing in tests since Kohli started leading, there is no way he'll be replaced as test skipper anytime soon. The only chance he can be replaced if his poor form continues or India lose matches/series in rows like Dhoni did.

BCCI made the right decision

It is the richest board with the best possible infrastructure in place with the best talent available. A captain has to be answerable for losing 4 ICC trophies in a row. There has to be a change.

Kane, Finch and Morgan have won a trophy each, even Sarfraz has won one. Why should Kohli be given any leeway for the failures. India made the right decision, no one is bigger than Indian cricket, they have to be ambitious.

This is terrible news for world cricket, India might actually win an ICC event.

Kohli comes off as a bad leader in that times article, Rohit and Dhoni both better big brother types who you could chill with.

Can you give some instance of India losing close games under kohli in final stages of a match? If there were we can hold captain responsible.

All Indian losses are because of top and middle order flopping in big games. Nothing a captain can do to change those things.
It's going to be same under rohit unless India can find some good all-rounders and middle order to lend balance to team

Very regressive move.. good luck if rohit is chosen because of his luck with tosses

He was one responsible to not standing up in 2019 wc SF and 2021 t20 opening game, and exposing the middle order

We Indian fans now have Punching bag... or a belly for that matter for the next time we fail at ICC events.
:qdkcheeky

Rahul dravid role is crucial now. Kohli under rohit in odis and rohit under kohli in tests .. it's going to be fun

There are some reports Kl Rahul will be groomed as next captain under kohli and Rohit. That's good to hear and time for Rahul to go a notch above.

The last Indian captain to get sacked from captaincy was Ganguly iirc.

Thala always had great support from the higher ups:srini

Nope..
Master Choker Tendulkar will sai Hiii :srt

Unceremonious sacking as captain was humiliating: Sachin Tendulkar.

NEW DELHI: Sharing his anger and pain after being stripped of the captaincy in 1997, batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has revealed that the "unceremonious" sacking was very "embarrassing" and "humiliating".

Writing in his autobiography 'Playing It My Way', published by Hachette India, Tendulkar recalled the drawn three-match series against Sri Lanka, which preceded his sacking.

"At the end of the series, I was unceremoniously sacked as skipper. No one from the BCCI managed to call me or inform me of my removal as captain before someone from the media called to say I was no longer captain," Tendulkar has written.

"I was actually with my friends in Sahitya Sahawas. I felt extremely humiliated to hear this :srt :)))

BCCI informed to Kohli and gave him at least 48 hours time to decide.
But Master Choker got sacked without any notice ..Dumbest Kaptaan :)):))

Dhoni fans doing bhangra here should remember he deserved the boot most among all Indian captains. Its only due to N.Srinivasan he remained captain even though team under him was getting whitewashed after whitewashed in SENA countries. Unfortunately for Sachin, Ganguly & Kohli there were no godfathers to protect them.

What a farce that mentor Dhoni move was by god :)))

Don't compare those chokers Tendu and Kohli with Dhoni.:qdkcheeky

Dhoni who lifted all trophies for India. That's it..

Ganguly had Dhalima , Sachin had Mumbai lobby, its open secret.
Poor fella is Kohli :)) he don't have any lobby unlike Tenduu and Ganguu..
Moreover his liberal views/tweets irks BJP led BCCI :moyo2

Funny thing is Gangly and Kohli was Given at least some time to take decision but Sachin got kicked out without any notice. I know its hurting you :)

MSD is indeed one of the greatest captain of the Indian Cricket.
Only captain to win all the ICC Trophies.

Will be a bitter blow for anyone to lose ODI captaincy two years before a home World Cup, but Kohli had to answer for a trophyless tenure as LOI captain.

Rohit is not a spring chicken so who they decide to go with after 2023 is interesting.

Split captaincy wasn't going to work in limited overs so a good decision.

Kohli can focus tests now primarily and play limited overs as specialist batsman.

This is what exactly Ganguly said.

"The BCCI had requested Virat Kohli to not step down as T20i skipping, but he didn't agree. Selectors then didn't feel it right to have two different captains for White Ball. Virat will continue to lead in Tests".

- Ganguly

Rohit won't be winning any trophy for India unless the tournament is being played in India.

Seem, as if, BCCI picked Rohit because they had to remove Kholi from captaincy.

This has nothing to do with not winning a trophy. This is a revolt by the team against a captain.

Rohit won't be winning any trophy for India unless the tournament is being played in India.

Seem, as if, BCCI picked Rohit because they had to remove Kholi from captaincy.

Rohit captained India to a win in the 2018 Asia Cup that was played in the UAE.

"It's a call that the BCCI and the selectors took together. Actually, the BCCI had requested Virat to not step down as the T20I skipper but obviously, he did not agree. And the selectors then did not feel it right to have two different captains for two white-ball formats," Ganguly told ANI.

"So it was decided that Virat will continue as Test captain and Rohit will take over as the white-ball captain. I as President personally spoke to Virat Kohli and the chairman of selectors has also spoken to him.

"We have full faith in Rohit Sharma's leadership abilities, and Virat will continue as the Test captain. We as BCCI are confident that Indian cricket is in good hands. We thank Virat Kohli for his contributions as captain in the white-ball format," the BCCI president added.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday confirmed Rohit Sharma as India's ODI captain. The Indian opener takes over the role from Virat Kohli and is likely to begin his tenure as ODI skipper in the series against South Africa in January.

BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has now opened up on the decision, stating that the board and selectors took the call together to appoint Rohit as the full-time white-ball captain of the side. The former Indian skipper also added that he, along with the chairman of selectors, talked to Virat Kohli over the decision.

“It's a call that the BCCI and the selectors took together,” Ganguly told ANI.

"Actually, the BCCI had requested Virat to not step down as the T20I skipper but obviously, he did not agree. And the selectors then did not feel it right to have two different captains for two white-ball formats.

“So it was decided that Virat will continue as Test captain and Rohit will take over as the white-ball captain. I as President personally spoke to Virat Kohli and the chairman of selectors has also spoken to him.”

Ganguly thanked Kohli for his contributions as captain in T20Is and ODIs, while backing Rohit's abilities as skipper.

"We have full faith in Rohit Sharma's leadership abilities, and Virat will continue as the Test captain. We as BCCI are confident that Indian cricket is in good hands. We thank Virat Kohli for his contributions as captain in the white-ball format," the BCCI president said.

In Virat Kohli's tenure as ODI captain, India won 65 of their 95 games but didn't fare well in ICC tournaments. While the side lost in the final of the 2017 Champions Trophy, India's prolific run in the 2019 World Cup ended in the semi-finals with a loss to New Zealand.

In addition to being named the full-time captain in ODIs, Rohit Sharma was also appointed as the vice-captain in Tests. He takes over the role from Ajinkya Rahane, who recently led India in the first of two-Test series against New Zealand. Rohit will begin in the role in the upcoming three-Test series in South Africa.

What happens if India losses their group stage match to Pakistan in ODI world cup 2023 ( dont think it will happen ) just saying if it does, would they remove Rohit from captaincy after that world cup too. Kohli should have stepped down as captain a while ago, but its clear that after losing to Pakistan in t20 world cup BCCI, did not want him to captain ODI squad either, which is the right thing, but feel it had to do with the streak being over as well.
