Rohit Sharma - Captain of India in all formats

Decision To Sack Virat Kohli As ODI Captain Taken By Selectors: Sources To NDTV

The decision to remove Virat Kohli as captain of India's ODI team was taken by the national selectors and the BCCI top brass had no prior communication with him, sources have told NDTV.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday announced the appointment of Rohit Sharma as India's ODI captain, with the opener replacing Virat Kohli in the role ahead of the upcoming tour to South Africa. The decision to remove Virat Kohli as captain of India's ODI team was taken by the national selectors and the BCCI top brass had no prior communication with him, sources have told NDTV. The 33-year-old Kohli wasn't asked to quit ODI captaincy ahead of Wednesday's announcement, according to sources.

The rationale behind the decision was to avoid split captaincy in white-ball cricket, sources further revealed. Rohit Sharma was appointed captain of India's T20I team ahead of last month's home series against New Zealand.

Kohli had earlier announced his decision to quit as T20I captain after the completion of the 2021 T20 World Cup.

The prolific batter had cited workload management as the reason behind the move.

"Understanding workload is a very important thing and considering my immense workload over the last 8-9 years playing all 3 formats and captaining regularly for the last 5-6 years, I feel I need to give myself space to be fully ready to lead the Indian Team in Test and ODI cricket," Kohli had stated at the time.

India will play three Test matches and three ODI matches as part of the upcoming tour to South Africa. The tour will begin with the opening Test in Centurion from December 26.

Rohit has been handed the reins of India's limited-over sides almost a year ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup and less than two years before the 2023 ODI World Cup, which will be held in India.

In another move, Rohit was promoted to Test vice-captaincy at the expense of the out-of-form Ajinkya Rahane.

What happens if India losses their group stage match to Pakistan in ODI world cup 2023 ( dont think it will happen ) just saying if it does, would they remove Rohit from captaincy after that world cup too. Kohli should have stepped down as captain a while ago, but its clear that after losing to Pakistan in t20 world cup BCCI, did not want him to captain ODI squad either, which is the right thing, but feel it had to do with the streak being over as well.

This is nothing to do with that. I think it all started with their 5th test pull out. That is when he announced he was going to quit T20 captaincy after world t20 and also quit captaincy of RCB. Basically he wanted a farewell series. They should have removed him right away. As a player you can say "This is my last series". But as a captain you cannot say "This is my last series as captain". That makes no sense. Why not immediately. Why do you need a farewell.

None of this Kohli Vohli Sharma Varma will lead India to ICC event victories. I just cant see it.

Makes you appreciate the great captain that Dhoni was.

India's 5th test pull out was call from Kohli. He ticked off BCCI there. That is when the undercurrent started.

You make no sense. Ipl is bcci tournament and they will be first to suggest a pull out. And then players need to take a call. Not other way around.

CT 2017 loss was way more humiliating than T20 WC as we lost the final against Pakistan and that too with the biggest margin. Yet nothing happened to Kohli.

Then I would say you are living in world of your own imagination. You guys think BCCI revolves aroud Pakistan but that's not true.
If what you suggesting is true BCCI wouldn't have made Rohit captain who scored zero against Pak and gave bad start to team.
A captain is not at fault if top order fails or bowlers fail to pick any wicket. Plus BCCI is not an emotional board but rather very professional which doesn't take decisions based on one match result.

Also VK declared before WC started that he is leaving T20 captaincy. It was inevitable that he'll be replaced as ODI captain too after that.
Why?
Because it doesn't make any sense to have two captain for two white ball format. BCCI would have faced lot of criticism if by any chance India wins 2022 T20 WC under Rohit's captaincy and lost 2023 ODI WC under Kohli.
By making Rohit captain in both format BCCI has secured itself. Even if Rohit doesn't win T20 and ODI WC in next two years, no one will blame BCCI. Because everyone wants Rohit as captain due to his successful captaincy in IPL.

India won 65 Odi matches out of 95 under Kohli. Won 15 out of 19 ODI series. His success percentage is nearly 70+. Guy is just unlucky that his team specially top order failed at crucial moments and he couldn't win any ICC trophy. Otherwise he is still one of the best captain around.

Not really. That was not the case. Decision was completely decision of players. Not BCCI. Why would BCCI want to cancel a scheduled Test series? Infact match was about to happen until the evening of the day before. Sudden developments were initiated by Kohli.

This is right decision. As a Batsman kholi is declining every inning. He has too much in the plate and want even more. As a professionel batsman he has lost it.

kohli lost the catpaincy due to ego clashes and also realisation of the second best player in the team that the captain always rake in the moolah in india.

Please do not disrespect Kohli by comparing him to a captain who only won 14 Test matches and lost to Sri Lanka in the 80s when they were minnows.

Sri Lanka only won 2 Test matches in the entire decade. It is akin to losing a Test to Afghanistan today.

Kohli has 39 Test wins as captain. Almost 3x more than Imran. Only 3 captains in history have won more matches.

Kohli left Imran behind as a captain long ago. In fact, Imran was not even the best Pakistani captain of his era. Miandad was a better tactician and won the same number of matches as Imran in lesser games.

He was also a better team man and never put himself above the team which Imran always did.

Miandad lost the captaincy battle to Imran because Imran came from an affluent background, spoke English and was far more presentable than the former.

Kohli is the biggest reason behind the establishment of India as the greatest Asian Test team.

He brought an aggressive attitude to the Test team that was lost under Dhoni after Ganguly revolutionized the team and introduced a fast bowling and fitness culture that India never had.

He has changed the mindset and attitude of Indian cricket forever. As far as the notion that he has quality players at his disposal which is why he wins, yeah the sky is blue.

Every successful captain in history needed quality players, but what matters is how you manage them.

Clive was lucky that he had talents like Viv, Marshall, Holding, Roberts etc. at his disposal. Waugh and Ponting were lucky that they had McGrath, Gilchrist, Warne and Ponting himself.

Imran was also lucky that his captaincy coincided with the emergence of once in a generation talents like Wasim and Waqar, and sure Imran played a big role in mentoring them, but you cannot polish a ****.

If a player does not have high ceiling, no amount of mentoring will make him world class. There were plenty of mediocre players in Pakistan at the time and Imran’s mentoring didn’t help them become world class.

Morgan is fantastic white ball captain but he wouldn’t have won the World Cup if he didn’t possess the finest white balls players English cricket has ever had.

Dhoni wouldn’t have won the World Cup without the great players that he had at his disposal, and I can go on and on.

Kohli has brought the best out of his players and that is what matters. Ishant Sharma was a laughing stock under Dhoni before Kohli turned his career around. He produced world class numbers between 2015 and 2019 and the influence of Kohli’s leadership was obvious.

Learn to respect real greatness. 39 Test wins and counting do not come free. Kohli is an absolute giant of the game and an inspirational Test leader in every sense of the word.

well put. somehow imran and dhoni has lot of similarities.

It's not a case of luck. Kohli failed at developing a decent middle order. First it was backing the past his prime Yuvraj Singh, then it was having Kedar Jadhav at No. 6 where he's least useful, then it was the shambolic World Cup 2019 campaign where he backed Ambati Rayudu for a year and said he will be our No. 4, only for him to be dropped from the World Cup squad and trying out guys like Vijay Shankar and Rishabh Pant last minute and pushing Pandya up the order at the World Cup when they never did that before. So yes, he is not a victim but the cause for which we weren't able to fight back from those early wickets. We kept dominating bilateral series with the top order scoring big runs and they failed when it matters most, and Kohli never developed a middle order to be able to withstand that pressure.

His track record as a captain in icc events isnt good, also the top order failing isnt kohlis fault but at the end of the day he is the captain and its always the the captain that will be thrown under the bus. That being said tactics team combonation and selection were kohlis choice.

Kohli is an outstanding player but as a captain his time was due, t20 he stepped down we all know that what we are simply saying that after that loss did BCCI say its time for him to go as an ODi captain. It makes sense to have 1 captian for limited overs, but the thougth process or atleast what it seemed like it would be is that Kohli would still lead the ODI team for 2023 world cup.

Also their was indian fans as welll who think kohli losing to pakistan could have been the reason that BCCI sacked him from ODI captaincy

We can't completely blame one person for this. This decision made by selectors and Management.
Yesterday Ravi shastri clarified on this.

Ravi Shastri tells TOI he had no say in non-selection of Ambati Rayudu for 2019 World Cup. But what he can't understand is, how could selectors pick 3 wicket-keepers?
"They might as well have included Ambati or Shreyas."

He also mention Captain and Coach didn't involve in recent T20 wc selection process.

Even if board is not responsible for pull out, it's clearly seniors in team rahane, rohit had a say in refusing to play on medical reasons. How did you put entire blame on kohli?

We are talking about a single game that India lost in semis after shocking start 3/3 and from then it's always difficult to rebuild and no guarantee rayudu would have done wonders with his poor form . It justifies to talk about ambati rayudu if india had failures regularly through out the tournament. That did not happen

I'm not advocating for the inclusion of Rayudu. Whether we would have won or lost from that situation under different circumstances is another matter. But the campaign itself was disastrous. Picking Vijay Shankar, Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik for the World Cup when they barely got many games in the lead up to it and then pushing Pandya up the order when he was always batting in the lower middle order shows that they did not plan long term. Kohli looked foolish for saying that Rayudu will be our No. 4 and then never acknowledging why he was dropped or if it was the right or wrong decision.

Having replaced Virat Kohli as India's captain in limited-over internationals, Rohit Sharma spoke on his new responsibility for the first time in an interview with the website of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Rohit, who also replaced the out-of-form Ajinkya Rahane as Test vice-captain, said he is not bothered by "talks that happen outside" and is focussed on his job. "When you are playing cricket for India, it's gonna be always high pressure. The pressure is always gonna be there; a lot of people talking about the positives and negatives but for me personally as a cricketer, not as a captain as a cricketer, for me it's important to focus on my job and not to focus on what people are talking about because you can't control that," Rohit said in a video posted by the BCCI on Twitter.

"I have said million times about this and I will keep saying that and that is what the message is to the team as well; like, even the team understands that when we are playing a high-profile tournament, there will be a lot of talks," he added.

"It's just important for us to focus on what we have in hand, which is to go and win games, play the way you are known to play. I think those talks that happen outside are immaterial. For us, it's important what we think of each other and that is more important.

"What I think of x, y, z is important as you want to create a strong bond between the players and that is what will help us in achieving the goal we want. Rahul (Dravid) bhai is obviously gonna help us in doing that so we look forward to that."

Rohit's first stint as a full-time ODI skipper will be the next month's series against South Africa.

Under Rohit's captaincy, India have played 10 ODI matches and won eight of them.

Rohit also led India in the triumphant 2018 Asia Cup campaign.

Do you really think BCCI or any sporting governing body cares for silly things as the Streak(which was mostly created by media and the fans) ? And ODI champions trophy matters lot more that Wt20. The inclusion of Yuvraj in CT2017 is a proof of that. His slow batting was the main reason for our failure in 2014 WCT20 finals and still he was a part of Indian teams after that.
And the defeat in CT2017 was mostly due to Kohli’s decision to chase against Pakistan on a road. All he has to do in that match was to bat first and score over 250. The Indo-Pak big match pressure would have taken care of the rest. And he had got out cheaply in that match.
Compared to that, he did much better in WT20 2021.

During Kohli's five-year tenure India rose in the one-day, Twenty20 and test rankings but missed out on securing a single international tournament.

India, who last won a world crown – the Champions Trophy – in 2013, failed to make the semifinals in this year's T20 World Cup and got knocked out in the last four of the 2019 50-over showpiece event.

The team also lost the inaugural World Test Championship final to New Zealand in June.

"The last ICC trophy we won was in 2013, since then we haven't won but I don't think we did anything wrong after that," Rohit, 34, said in a video on the Board of Control for Cricket in India's official website on Sunday.

"We played as a team, we performed as a team, it's just that we couldn't get that extra inch that we look forward to," he said.

"There is a lot of World Cup coming up. India will definitely be eyeing to do well in all those World Cups."

Kohli was fired as captain of India's ODI side last week, a month after he stepped down as the T20 leader following the T20 World Cup.

But the 33-year-old remains test captain and will lead India in three tests in South Africa starting on 26 December.

Rohit praised Kohli for his leadership since he took over the limited-overs job from M.S. Dhoni in 2017.

"He has put the team in a position where there is no looking back. Those five years that he has led the team, he led from the front every time we stepped onto the park," Rohit said in the BCCI video.

"There was clear grit, determination to win every game. That was the message to the entire squad and we had a great time playing under him."

Kohli's removal copped criticism from pundits and fans, especially after the announcement came in one line at the bottom of a press release about the squad for the South Africa tour, which will also include three ODIs.

But BCCI president Sourav Ganguly defended Kohli's ouster, saying the management wanted one white-ball leader.

"I personally requested him (Kohli) not to give up the T20I captaincy," Ganguly told News 18.

"Obviously, he felt the workload. Which is fine, he has been a great cricketer, he has been very intense with his cricket. He has captained for a long period of time and these things happen.

"Also, they wanted only one white-ball captain. And that's why this decision."

COMMUNICATION

Rohit has led his Indian Premier League side Mumbai Indians to a record five titles and captained India to an Asia Cup triumph in the absence of Kohli.

Rohit said he and new coach Rahul Dravid, who took over from Ravi Shastri last month, aimed to have good communication with the players in the three ODIs in South Africa starting 19 January.

"I have had very little opportunities to lead Team India, but whenever I have gotten an opportunity, I have tried to keep one thing in common, which is clear communication to the players," said Rohit.

Yes i do believe BCCI care about the streak, since all their support comes from their fans and Media. Granted streak hype was created by fans and media, but BCCI knew its importance and what it meant.

Regardless of what one feels as to why Kohli is no longer ODI captain, the fact remains, he is no longer Captain of ODI, and T20 Squad. And in all honesty it is for the betterment of Indian cricket. Rohit Sharma is a better captain

Have said this many times before. These two have a good understanding based on mutual respect. Rohit is secure enough to not feel threatened by Virat or to seek his advice. And Kohli respects Rohit too much as a player to let his ego ruin Rohit's team.

In any case, while Virat was captain, I've seen several occasions especially during crisis moments when Rohit has offered suggestion and on a couple of occasions even overridden Kohli's opinions which the latter was happy to accept and change to.

Pant almost got the Brooks review badly wrong despite taking the catch :snothappy

He was convinced Brooks didn't hit it but Kohli told Rohit he was sure there was bat. Rohit eventually went with Virat, which turned out to be the right choice.

The next ball Pollard was bowled and ....

Kolkata: India captain Rohit Sharma had an overflow of emotions on Friday during the second T20I against West Indies. The game was in the balance and Rovman Powell was looking dangerous. The incident took place in the 16th over of the match when Powell was on 38 and had mistimed a short ball from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The ball went up in the air and it looked like it was going to be an easy catch for Bhuvneshwar, but that was not to be – as he dropped it.

Rohit, who was next to him, lost his cool and kicked the ball from his sight. The Indian captain knew the importance of the wicket and hence reacted in such a manner.

Eventually, the catch drop did not hurt India as they won the nail-biter by eight runs. Powell’s 36-ball 68 blitz went in vain as India sealed the three-match series with consecutive wins.

dear lord, sharma as your captain - i keep hearing how good india is, yet sharma who kept walking over to kohli and asking him what to do - this is your captain - woooow

the kl rahul the VC kept getting out cheapy and batted so slowly - he was another contender = really

then thr was ashwin = the man shouting nonsense at a microphone, just because it didnt go his way = and yet he was so clearly wrong about it.

not looking good is it

Team India skipper Rohit Sharma's run as the full-time captain has begun on a stupendous note. After beating New Zealand and recently the West Indies in the T20I series at home, Team India are on the verge of another series victory in the shortest format under Rohit.
The Indian team kicked off the three-match series against Sri Lanka with an overwhelming 62-run win. Skipper Rohit, his opening partner Ishan Kishan, and Shreyas Iyer coming in at No. 3 almost batted the visitors out of the game before the bowlers landed the killer blow and restricted them to just 137 runs in 20 overs.

If the hosts manage to beat the islanders in the second T20I, it will not just be a series-clinching victory but also a record-breaking achievement for Rohit in his short-term as the captain of the side.

Currently, Rohit has 15 wins in 16 T20I games at home and is currently levelled with England skipper Eoin Morgan and New Zealand's Kane Williamson. If India manage to win in the second T20I at the picturesque stadium in Dharamshala, Rohit will have most wins at home as a captain in T20Is. If only Indian captains are concerned, Rohit is two ahead of Virat Kohli's 13 and former skipper MS Dhoni's 10 wins at home.

However, there are couple of more achievements beckoning for the 35-year old at Dharamshala. Rohit needs just 19 runs to join the elite list, which comprises the likes of Aaron Finch, Eoin Morgan, Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Babar Azam among others to reach the milestone of 1000 runs as a captain in the shortest format.

The story doesn't end here. Rohit has a chance to become the second-fastest batsman to reach the milestone if he does score more than 18 runs. Babar is fastest to the milestone in 26 innings and Rohit fell just short of one innings of equalling the milestone with the Pakistan skipper. If Rohit does achieve the feat on Saturday, he will surpass Kohli's record (30 innings) while MS Dhoni is the slowest to reach the milestone in 57 innings.

The remaining two matches of the series will take place at the same venue at Dharamshala, before the two teams move to Mohali for the first Test, which will be Kohli's 100th game in the longest format.

Born: April 30, 1987 (age 35 years), Nagpur, India

Happy Birthday to Rohit Sharma

The selectors of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had a couple of options at disposal, but Rohit Sharma, who was earlier in December last year announced as the new vice captain in the format, remained the front-runner to replace Virat Kohli as India's new Test captain. And the team started off well under Rohit in March when they whitewashed Sri Lanka at home. However, former India cricketer Yuvraj Singh wasn't impressed with the choice of announcement.

Besides Rohit, BCCI had Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah and R Ashwin to choose from. But with the experience that Rohit brought in compared to the other candidates, who have hardly ever led a red-ball team, the veteran opener was unanimously chosen by the selectors.

However, during his conversation interaction on Home of Heroes on Sports 18, Yuvraj opined that while Rohit is an excellent leader, the decision to name him the Test captain was an emotional one. He feels that with Rohit getting injured a lot, it will add pressure on him as a Test captaincy to keep up with the fitness besides leading the side.

“Excellent leader. I played under him when I was playing for Mumbai Indians. Very good thinker, very good captain. Rohit should have been the captain at least in the white-ball cricket a while ago. But since Virat was doing so well and the team was also doing well it wasn’t easy,” Yuvraj said.

“I felt it was an emotional decision to make him a captain in Test cricket. When they made him captain it was announced subject to fitness. You cannot announce your Test captain subject to fitness. He is getting injured a lot. He is at that age where he must look after his body,” asserted Yuvraj.

“It will add pressure to him on Test captaincy as well. It’s been only a couple of years since he started opening the innings in Test cricket. He has been playing well. Let the guy focus on his batting in Test cricket. I hope he enjoys, it’s not easy standing for 5 days in the park,” he added.

Rohit next assignment in the format will be the one Test in England later this summer which was previously part of the five-match series in 2021 and was postponed owing to a Covid outbreak in the Indian camp. India presently lead 2-1.

India under new captain Rohit Sharma finished the 2021-22 season as the world's number one ranked T20 team after a string of impressive performances at home but were a good nine points behind Australia in the annual Test rankings released by ICC on Wednesday. The 'Black Caps' from New Zealand finished the last season as the world No.1 ODI team with the cut-off date being May 4, 2022. The England versus India series that began in 2021, will be included in the rankings once the final postponed Test is completed.

"Australia have increased their lead over second-placed India from one to nine rating points while Pakistan have overtaken England to fifth position in the ICC Men's Test Team Rankings following the annual update carried out today," the ICC release stated.

"India have also gained a point to move to 119 while England have had the biggest decrease of nine points as their 4-1 series win over India in 2018 is now dropped from the rankings. England's 88 rating points is their lowest since 1995," the release added.

Australia, who beat England 4-0 in the Ashes in January, have moved from 119 to 128 rating points in the annual update that drops the 2018-19 season and reflects all series completed since May 2019.

Series completed prior to May 2021 are now weighted at 50 per cent and subsequent series at 100 per cent.

India remain on top in T20Is, extending their lead over second-placed England from one to five points. South Africa and Australia have overtaken New Zealand, who are now in sixth place. Similarly, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are now ahead of Afghanistan (10th).

In the updated ODI rankings, New Zealand remain on top but their lead over England is reduced from three to one point. The gap between England and third-placed Australia has increased from seven to 17 points.

Sadly we've missed out on at least one ICC title by trying to retain our best batsman as default captain. Rohit still has a 1 out of 2 chance left, which would cap a remarkable career of downs and ups.

A small example of the difference between Rohit and Virat as captains. Against conventional wisdom, he moved Pant ahead of Suryakumar to No. 4. Rishabh was out for a duck and those on air expressed wonder at the move. If it was Kohli, he would have displayed a scrambled selection brain and discarded the idea immediately. But Rohit persisted and Pant won us the series in partnership with Pandya.

In fact, Pant has flowered in the absence of Kohli's leadership who seemed too stubborn about players and worse still, impatient.

I think the biggest failure of Kohli as LOI captain was to not have built a solid middle order. We had Jadhavs, Rayudus, Raina, Yuvraj coming back etc. So much uncertainty without any clarity. We didn't feel it's impact as we had once in a generation top 3.

But 2017 CT final and 2019 SF showed us that, once top 3 fails we didn't have a solid MO to rely on. Hopefully Rohit changes that. he is known to back players.

"Fantastic Because...": Rohit Sharma On India Having 6-7 Captains In 2022
Regular captain Rohit Sharma spoke about how it is fantastic that the side now has so many leaders within the group

2022 has been a challenging year for Team India as the side have had 6-7 captains due to injuries and workload management. The likes of Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and Shikhar Dhawan have led India in the white-ball formats. Dhawan will be leading the side once again in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe, beginning August 18. Regular captain Rohit Sharma spoke about how it is fantastic that the side now has so many leaders within the group.

“I think it's very important to have that leadership, but obviously, you know we play the IPL and it's a 10- team tournament. So there will be 10 captains which at some stage will be a part of the Indian team as well," Rohit said on Star Sports' show "Follow The Blues".

"You know, I think it's fantastic because honestly my job is much lesser as these guys understand everything pretty well. So, it's just about if someone's having a thought, how am I going to backup that thought. For me as captain that is my role and that is what I'm trying to do,” he added.

When asked about his experience captaining the team with so many young leaders, Rohit Sharma said: “I know it's very exciting honestly to create so many leaders around the team because it's always a good sign. And you want the guys to handle the pressure, who understand the game and know each other really well. And when they are leading the team, all these things can happen.”

Team India will square off in the Asia Cup later this month and the side will play their first match against Pakistan on August 28 in Dubai.

“If the message is clear from the captain and the coach about where the team is trying to head, then the individuals will definitely try to do that. For that to happen they need freedom and clarity and that's what we are trying to do. We are trying to give them as much freedom as possible," said Rohit.

Rohit took charge of India's white-ball cricket after the 2021 T20 World Cup. Earlier in 2022, Rohit was also made the Test captain after Virat Kohli stepped down following a series loss against South Africa.

Under Rohit, Team India had recently won the ODI and T20I series against England. The T20 World Cup will be played in Australia this year with India also set to square off against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Captain Rohit Sharma shed light on India's recent change in approach in T20Is, the transition after the T20 World Cup last year and his relationship with Rahul Dravid.

Ever since Rohit Sharma took over as captain of India in the shorter format, there has been a visible change in the style in which they play T20Is. The Indian team had come under criticism in the past for their restrained approach to the shortest format, but the last two series against England and West Indies have shown that there has been a conscious effort to play a more attacking brand of cricket.

Ahead of the tournament that's key to preparation for the T20 World Cup, the skipper while appearing on Star Sports show 'Follow the Blues' spoke about the transition since India's shock exit from the Super 12 of the T20 World Cup last year.

"I don't know what next to expect but for me particularly, it's just about getting better every day as a team," said Rohit. "No matter if you win or lose the series, that cannot take priority. What should take priority is if we are getting better as a team."

"The team's goal is important and then obviously parts in it where the individuals come into play and play the role in the team's success. But whatever the team is trying to do, the individuals need to buy into that thought process and work towards that direction.

"We have made it very clear after the T20 World Cup in Dubai when we didn't qualify (for the semi-final). We felt that there needs to be a change in our attitude, in our approach to how we play the game.

"We had a clear message given to the boys and they were ready to accept that challenge. At the same time, we need to remember that when you are trying to do new things, there will be some failures. It doesn't mean that you take a step back."

Since the T20 World Cup last year, India have not been shy with experimenting with their squads. While injury and workload management have played a part in it, Rohit made it clear that he wants to create a strong bench that can be called to do the job when required.

"We play lot of cricket, so there will be injuries and workload management, so we have to rotate players," added Rohit. "But it gives our bench strength to go and play the game, which is why we could try so many other guys who are ready to take that international stage and perform.

"We want to create our bench strength, we want to make sure that India's future is in safe hands. That's the planning that we are trying to have."

Apart from the change in captaincy, India had a new coach since the end of the T20 World Cup 2021, with Ravi Shastri making way for Rahul Dravid. The bond between the new skipper and coach goes way back to Rohit's ODI debut, when Dravid was the skipper of India at the time.

Rohit elaborated on the relationship between the two and the conversations they have had since taking over the reins of India cricket.

"When he became the coach here, we met and sat together in a room for a while and decided how we want to take this team forward," Rohit added. "He was pretty much on the same thought process as me. That made it easier for me to give out a clear message to the boys because the coach and captain always need to be on the same page for the team to move in the same direction.

"One thing we have decided and have in common is we want to send the right messages and we don't want to create any confusion in the group. That's something we spoke about and of course, we wanted to change the style of cricket as well. We wanted to play in a certain way in all three formats and he was ready to accept all of that."

Rohit is now gearing up for his first tournament as the permanent captain, Asia Cup 2022. It comes a full circle for Rohit, who four years ago led India to the same title in 2018 while filling in for Kohli as skipper.

India will have one eye on the T20 World Cup as well, a tournament they haven't laid their hands on since the inaugural edition in 2007. More importantly, Rohit and the coach will be keen to end the senior men's team's ICC trophy drought that began in 2013 when they last won the Champions Trophy.

This guy's old skool. Very much in the Pakistani mould of relying on skill and fitness being secondary

Horrible Team selection.
Poor bowling rotation.
Pathetic strategies.
Dumb fielding.

Poor captaincy from Rohit.

What is the point of picking Hooda if you don't want to use him as bowler? you can pick DK over him.
No reason to drop DK.
Ashwin over Bishnoi..big lol
Should have tried left arm spinner Axar in place of injured Jaddu.
19th over with Bhuvi..thrashed by both Pak and Lanka...lol
Keep using Pandya every time even after leaking runs...no rotation policy.

If Hooda was not bowling, DK was the choice.

Ashwin should not be even in India Z T20 squad.

Bhuvi is over.Done. but they will keep playing him. Next 6 T20IS are at home. Ball will hold on those pitches and this guy will do well snd take the plane to Australia.

Pandya is a fair 4th bowling option.

Rohit sharma is absolutely horrendous captain.
He just doesn't know what to do.
He doesn't have his tactics right. His selection is absolutely awful.

Once again Indians should be reminded that this is not poor league called IPL
This is international cricket.

Surprised to see him lose his cool so much.

Once again - I’ve said this for years, Dhoni was a GOAT player/captain who was severely under appreciated. His demeanour and captaincy alone bought more victories and trophies than any other player in history.

Kohli was an average captain but his super human performance meant he almost kept up with Dhoni without the trophies.

An aging Sharma has a tough act to follow. As much as I dislike them, it’s time for Pandya to take over as leader for the next chapter.

Management should also be held accountable they didn't give the right resources to Rohit however you can tell Rohit was under huge pressure.

The pressure of an ICC tournament is different from a bilateral contest where experiments don't have the same consequences.

Saw nothing of MS Dhoni calmness in Rohits captaincy and body language.

Known to catch the attention of fans on social media due to his reactions and antics, Rishabh Pant once again caught everyone's attention during India's must-win Super 4 stage encounter against Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup, in Dubai on Tuesday. After Rohit Sharma's departure, India were at 110 for two in 12.2 overs and Rishabh Pant was expected to come and bat at no. 5 and so did the wicketkeeper-batter himself. But he was taken aback when the team management decided to send Hardik Pandya.

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 77.419%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/e/4rcdy5" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

In a video that has now gone viral, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya were seen sitting together in the dugout. After Rohit holed out in deep point, the left-hander was almost about to put his gloves on when Pandya was seen gesturing towards the team management and getting the nod. Pant's reaction simply reeked of confusion and disappointment.

Pandya could only muster 17 runs off 13 balls and Pant, who came in to bat at no. 6, registered the same score. With Rohit's knock of 72 runs off 41 balls coming in handy, India posted 173 for eight in 20 overs. Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav also played a crucial knock of 34 runs off 29 balls. KL Rahul failed to shine once again and could only register six runs off seven balls before a lbw dismissal to Maheesh Theekshana. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli couldn't build on his resurgent form and was dismissed for a four-ball duck. Dilshan Madushanka was in good bowling form for the hosts and took three wickets. Meanwhile, Chamika Karunaratne and Dasun Shanaka bagged two dismissals each.

Chasing a target of 174 runs, Sri Lanka reached 174 for four in 19.5 overs with Bhanuka Rajapaksa and Dasun Shanaka playing unbeaten match-winning knocks of 25 runs off 17 balls and 33 runs off 18 balls respectively. Meanwhile, Pathum Nissanka (52 off 37 balls) and Kusal Mendis (57 off 37 balls) played crucial knocks too. Meanwhile, Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin took three wickets and a dismissal each.

Not sure why but I felt bad for Pant in this video. Even though they both are the darlings of team management but in this instance Pant looks like that sibling who got less love than Pandya from his captain. :inti

Heard so much about his captaincy in the IPL. I never knew he was so poor. Has to be India's worst since some time.

World class player and world class captain, let down by a coward coach and dumb selectors.

World class player and world class captain, let down by a coward coach and dumb selectors.

Dumb selectors selected a batting line up of : Rahul, Sharma, Kohli, SKY, Pant, Hardik?

Dumb coach told him to disrespect his younger players and not even listen to them?

Lost his cool as a captain everytime the heat was on. No surprise India is loosing.

Captaining the national team on full time basis is a much bigger responsibility than what many players expect when they are not captaining but, are aspiring to become one. It comes with a tons of pressure especially if you are the captain of Indian team.

Not sure if others have same observation but, Rohit has been under tremendous pressure in this Asia cup and even looked pretty tense even in last bilateral he was captaining. When he captained the team on occasions during Kohli era, there was limited to no pressure as it was Kohli who was the appointed captain.

Now Rohit being fully in charge of Indian team he have had number of emotions going through his mind while on and off the field and he is not handling that well as of now. Have rarely seen him so angry, on occasions nervous along with some nervous smirks and that was evident not only on ground but in post match presentation and press conference. I guess he will have to chew it up until the WC 23 atleast and then he might not have many years left anyways as he would be 36 by around the WC 23.

Kohli wasted at least 4 solid years of rohit odi captaincy...

In Mamoon world, Anushka is to blame for Kohlis decline. Now Dravid is to blame for Sharma flopping.

Just that Kohli can never be blamed for anything, even for his own woeful form.

I saw him ignoring Arshdeep while the latter was talking to him.

That must have shattered the bowler's confidence, a bowler who was already feeling low after all the abuse he reveived after the Pakistan game.

Unexpected and poor from a player of Rohit's stature.

This is something you won't see from Virat. He was always there to motivate and boost youngsters' moral.

Reminds you? You were not alive when IK was captain. However you are alive to see your captain Rohit bail because its too hot.

Completely different situations and different times.
The going was clearly too tough for Rohit in this Asia cup and KL Rahul admitted it.

Not really, just an inconvenient fact that you cannot defend and would prefer to side step. Anyway, Imran or Rohit - not a big deal.

India is out of the tournament and he gains nothing by playing this match.

Was seen screaming and abusing at his players again today. Looks really frustrated and in bad shape. Does India even have a leader to replace him? I see bunch of weaklings. Maybe Bumrah? But just like Rohit and Kohli, he is also on the sunset of his career.

Already lost the captain cool tag if it was there!!!if he could not win a icc tournament then he must be a ipl bully captain only..who can win only with a best team and not with average players..

So on the 7th of September you were saying he is a world class captain and 2 weeks later you want him sacked and changed just after the world T20?

Stakes were high as India kicked off their final preparations for the T20I World Cup in the three-match series against World Champions Australia on Tuesday. Asked to chase down a daunting total set by Rohit Sharma-led Team India, Australia made an impressive start with makeshift-opener Cameron Green playing the role of an aggressor. After losing skipper Aaron Finch in the opening Powerplay, premier batter Steve Smith joined forces with an on-song Green during Australia's record-breaking run chase at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium.

Though Smith looked in fine touch, the star batter was stopped in his tracks by Umesh Yadav, who got the better of the Australian batter in the 12th over. Interestingly, pacer Umesh jolted Australia with his second strike in the same over by removing Glenn Maxwell following another successful Decision Review System (DRS) call.

https://www.hindustantimes.com/cric...ppeal-for-drs-goes-viral-101663694136575.html

After opting for the review, Indian skipper Rohit was seen grabbing Dinesh Karthik's neck in a playful manner. Rohit poked fun at his long-time teammate and good friend after the senior gloveman somehow didn't appeal for a review. Rohit's hilarious on-field antics soon became the talk of the town. Instead of Maxwell's dismissal, Rohit's aggressive gesture towards DK became an instant hit among the fans and followers on social media.
