Rohit Sharma - Captain of India in all formats

So on the 7th of September you were saying he is a world class captain and 2 weeks later you want him sacked and changed just after the world T20?

I don’t want him sacked. He is a proven captain, but I think he will step aside if there are no changes in the selectors panel and also if Dravid sticks around. He is being scapegoated but his hands are tied.

World class player and world class captain, let down by a coward coach and dumb selectors.

So this time who did let down the wolrd class player and world class captain?
Kohli with his slow batting, or KL Rahul? He was perfect as always.

India in 2022:

- Lost the Test series in SA.
- Lost the ODI series in SA.
- Lost the 5th Test in ENG.
- Couldn't qualify into Asia Cup final.
- Lost in the Semi-final of T20 WC.
- Lost an ODI match in BAN.

One of the forgettable years for India in recent times

Even Imam ul Haq is better than this guy. You have shown again that you have zero cricket knowledge by backing him as captain.
Never seen à captain as lost as him on the field in international matches.

No no, even you are a better batsman than Rohit Sharma. I bow down to your unparalleled cricket knowledge.

Fakhar is a better comparison.

No Pakistan opener is anywhere close to Rohit Sharma. Peak Rohit (2013-2020) is one of the best openers of all time.

India made a big blunder by not trusting him as a Test opener earlier. He would have become the second coming of Sehwag in the format. They opened with him in 2019 & wasted at least 4-5 years of excellent performances.

You have to release that Rohit is pretty average in Tests and T20i's. His only format is ODI's. And even there he is finished. Dont think he will ever recover from Shaheen's Yorker.

He is not. He has been really good in both of these formats & India missed a trick by not opening with him earlier in Tests.

Kohli is the greatest ever Asian Test captain but not trusting Rohit as an opener earlier in his captaincy tenure was easily his biggest blunder.

Rohit should have started opening in Tests in 2015-16 not 2019.

Disagree . Dew factor was huge.

Rohit trusted gill . Did not make gill give up his opening slot for kishan .

Bowling changes were good . Got pandya to bowl with siraj in crucial time .

What you fail to see is how selflessly get bats - none of the players are batting selfishly . The emphasis to keep on attacking is seen both in bowling and batting - batting in particular .

Rohit may have scored only 30 something , sky scored 35 but they kept the opposition under pressure .
He is also trying to keep both sky and kishan in team . I don’t like rahul but rohit knows something about rahul and is eager to keep him . He is building a decent team .

Concern is rahul dravid and coaching . Ever since our bowling coach left , bowlers seem to be regressing a bit - Sardarji lost a match to lanka by bowling like 6 no balls . Thakur ji seems to have lost in fitness .

Fact that we are winning matches with No Fit and one of the worst captain Rohit and worst Coach Dravid along with his 3 Stogges ( Batting , bowing and fielding coach ,dont what is dravid job here) and we are also giving opposition team a handicap of playing KL , Lord , Body builder YC
This got be one of the biggest achievements of Indian cricket in this century ,we should actually celebrate 🍾 👏

should've finished kuldeep's quota before the death overs in yesterday's match.
many went after rohit for backing gill over kishan for the opening slot for the last few ODIs and now they are all silenced.
he needs to score big with the bat though. picked up this new habit of throwing it away after settling in.

"Yet Another Failure For Rohit Sharma Was The Talk": R Ashwin Joins Skipper In Criticism Of BroadcasterRavichandran Ashwin echoed Rohit Sharma's sentiments after the India skipper hit out at the broadcaster for "first ODI century in 3 years" remark.NDTV Sports DeskUpdated: January 29, 2023 10:47 AM ISTRead Time:2 min
"Yet Another Failure For Rohit Sharma Was The Talk": R Ashwin Joins Skipper In Criticism Of Broadcaster

India captain Rohit Sharma was vocal about his disappointment with the broadcaster of the India vs New Zealand ODI series. After Rohit scored his 30th ton in the format, the broadcaster vividly highlighted that it was the veteran batter's first hundred in the format in 3 years. Rohit, at the press conference after the match, expressed his disappointment, suggesting the verdict doesn't paint the correct picture as he has played only a handful of ODI games in that period. Now, Ravichandran Ashwin has joined Rohit, demanding a better take on the 'perception'.

"Rohit Sharma raised a beautiful topic about broadcasters, saying that they should be responsible when it comes to putting out facts to the common people. I have spoken a lot about this perception, how it can formulate into an opinion," R Ashwin said in a video on his YouTube channel.

"If you keep on telling that there was a 3 year-gap, 4-year gap to the fans... fans, who are keen, and selectors and others who are part of the system, they know what's the truth. But if you look at a commoner's perspective, if you force such information on them, they would think 'yeah, he hasn't scored runs. So many new ones are scoring. Remove him'," he opined.

Ashwin said that Rohit was right to take up the issue with the broadcaster, suggesting they should be highlighting such 'facts' more responsibly. The veteran off-spinner also pointed out how formidable Rohit has been in the 50-over format, particularly scoring 5 centuries in the 2019 World Cup.

"That's why Rohit Sharma said the broadcasters should deal with such things more responsibly.

"In the 2019 World Cup, he scored one hundred after another. He was the player of the Tournament in the ODI World Cup. In the last 10-15 years, there's nothing to question Rohit Sharma's performance in limited-overs cricket," Ashwin said.

"In fact, he had scored 34 off 38. He took on the mantle, he started hitting the opposition bowlers. He reduced the pressure on his batting partners. Even when talking about that innings 'yet another failure for Rohit Sharma' was the talk in the show. It was surprising," Ashwin further said.

With the selectors giving more chances to youngsters in T20Is, Rohit will now be seen in action in the 4-match Test series against Australia next month.

You cannot judge the broadcasters for this mistake. Most probably they were rushing it so that the King Kohli segment gets enough airtime.

Rohit Sharma might miss couple of IPL 2023 games, India star to lead Mumbai Indians in India captain's absence: Reports

Five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) are set to launch their title bid for a record-extending sixth title in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Rohit Sharma's Mumbai Indians capped off a disastrous season in the 2022 edition of the cash-rich league as MI was the first franchise to crash out of the playoffs race last year. Hitting rock-bottom last year, the record-time holders finished 10th in the 10-team tournament.

With four wins and 10 defeats, Mumbai Indians only managed to pick up 8 points in 14 league matches last season. Rohit's Mumbai Indians will be without pace ace Jasprit Bumrah for the entire season of the cash-rich league in 2023. As per the latest developments, it is also a possibility that Mumbai Indians will play a few matches without their charismatic leader Rohit in IPL 2023.

According to a report filed by the Indian Express, it has been learned that Rohit might miss a couple of IPL matches this season. In order to manage his workload, India's all-format captain Rohit is likely to sit out for a few matches at the IPL 2023. The report also added that premier batter Suryakumar Yadav will lead Mumbai Indians in the absence of the veteran opener.

New Delhi: Indian skipper Rohit Sharma will join the likes of legendary Kapil Dev, Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli in the elite list of Indian captains who have led the side in the final of an ICC tournament.

Legendary Indian captain Kapil Dev was the first Indian captain to lead the side in the finals of an ICC tournament. He captained the India team that won the 1983 ODI World Cup. The second Indian player who led the side was Saurav Ganguly; he captained the side in the 2002 Champions Trophy and the 2003 World Cup.

Former India captain MS Dhoni, who led India in the most number of ICC finals as a captain, was the captain of the Indian team in the 2007 and 2014 T20 World Cups, where India won the first T20 format World Cup in 2007. Then MS led India in the 2011 ODI World Cup, which was again won by the Indian team. Dhoni also led the national team in the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Following Dhoni, Virat was the captain of the Indian team in the 2017 Champions Trophy as well as the 2021 World Test Championship.

Horrible tactics in Asia Cup and T20 WC.
Now can't even read the weather forecast.

It's time to kick this guy away from captaincy, Hardhik should be named for upcoming ODI WC.

There have been a lot of speculations about Rohit Sharma's captaincy in Test cricket after India's humiliating defeat against Australia in the World Test Championship final.

India's opener was appointed Test captain in February after Virat Kohli stepped down as Test captain of the Indian team after suffering a 1-2 defeat against South Africa in January. Rohit has led India in three Tests series so far and returned victorious three times.

According to the sources, the 36-year-old was not keen to lead Indian in the Test cricket, it was then-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and secretary Jay Shah who convinced him to take up the job.

"The two top men at that time (former president Sourav Ganguly and Secretary Jay Shah) had to convince him to take up the role once KL Rahul failed to impress as a captain in South Africa," the source said.

The source also revealed that all the accusations to sack Rohit from the captaincy are baseless. He further added that there is enough time for selectors to make this crucial decision.

"These are baseless accusations that Rohit will be removed from captaincy. Yes, whether he will last the whole two-year WTC cycle is a big question as he would be nearly 38 when the third edition ends in 2025," a senior BCCI source was quoted as saying by BCCI. "As of now, I believe that Shiv Sunder Das and his colleagues will have to take a call after the two Tests and look at his batting form."

"After the West Indies, we have no Tests till December's end, when the team travels to South Africa. So, there is enough time for selectors to deliberate and take a decision. By then, the fifth selector (the new chairman) will also join the panel, and a decision can be taken, he added.

Forget being the captain, at current form he doesn't even deserve a place in the team in any of the 3 formats.

India slowly and gradually needs to replace their mid 30s seniors with JUniors starting with T20 cricket just like they did in 2007 with Sachin, Ganguly and Dravid which resulted in them winning 2007 and 2011 championships. They also did well during this time in test cricket

Leading from the front with his blistering starts.

If Bharat goes on to win the cup, his upfront knocks will be talked about if forever

Rohit starts are 140+ strike rate india make 75-80+ runs in pp in almost every match this gives virat and others to take time. Rohit is leading from the front and only 1 win away from his dream

Probably the most inspiring and greatest performance by a captain over course of a tournament.

He has sacrificed his batting average and runs for teams sake. Rohit has 550 runs at 120+ SR. He could easily have had 700 at 95 SR but he has taken role of India's enforcer.

Rohit has also been tactically brilliant throughout world cup in handling bowlers and field setting. He is a proper ringmaster and it was clear that the wide lines strategy for Siraj was formulated by Rohit down to the pin point placement of cover fielders.

Rohit sharma is the proper leader after Dhoni, since kohli's captaincy was exposed as soon as Dhoni retired, it was clear kohli was just the toss presenter while Dhoni was calling the shots.

After kohli being exposed, rohit in his captaincy has

- Built a string of multiple players, like Gill and many alternatives like sanju Sampson and others who aren't even in wc.
- Created a united team culture
- Taken injuries and recoveries very seriously
- Correctly identified the correct positions of each and every player in his squad like Rahul being a solid middle order over an opener.
- Made sure no dosti yaari such as discarding dhawan and Rahul from opening cause Gill was better
- had Gun field settings and planning
- Is the perfect example of leading from the front, always providing those starts so players lower in the order can build
- Makes sure everyone in the team plays for the crest on their chest
- Makes sure their is proper respect for everyone in the squad
- Adopts the spirit of cricket amd doesn't block pathways for anyone, Rohit could have easily gotten jealous of Gill or Kishan as openers and discarded them, instead he has both in the squad and wants them to be his replacement for once he retires cause he knows their 200 score capabilities.

Rohit is a gun captain and he fully deserves respect. This is why i despise any he's a sumo wrestler with a pot belly comments. Have some respect for actual ATG's. His gun opening mixed with brilliant captaincy is something none of our jobbers in cricket can do.

Ps: Respect kohli the player too, but kohli was horrible as a captain after Dhoni left.

Just listing his errors and mistakes

- Throwing away his wicket after hitting Maxwell for a four and a six. Yes, this is how he had been playing through out the tournament but this was a WC final and he should have factored in that the other batters like Iyer, KL, Surya would misfire against a dangerous Australian team who have shown time and time again that all it takes them is a sniff to get back into the match. He was set and had his eye in. His team needed a century today from him.

- The decision to promote Jadeja over Surya

- The decision to give Shami the new ball over Siraj. Even Ponting mentioned that this is when he knew India had panicked. Shami had been bowling first change through out the tournament but Sirajs speciality is bowling with the new ball and he becomes half the bowler especially when he is bought into the attack in the 15th over

- Not bowling Bhumra, Shami, Siraj non stop for the first twenty overs. This was the WC final, these bowlers would have put everything on the line for their country in the WC final but India needed to do everything to get Australia 60/6 or as many wickets as possible in the first 15-20 overs.

- Not having a slip in against Head and Labu. Both had edged Jadeja, Labu in the slips

- Allowing easy singles to Labu, Head after the tenth overs onwards. There was no attempt to create pressure via field placings, India's only chance was to get Australian wickets, they were never going to restrict Australia

Overall he looked totally lost for the first time under pressure today. His worst game as captain.

I agree with everything except the first point.

Rahul played his game and he got us off to a flier. The same way he won us many games earlier. It’s not as if he got out with a low score or SR. He was at 47 off 31!

The failure is with the following batsmen (Kohli, Rahul and Iyer) who froze and couldn’t keep going. You can even say that Rohit had done his job by then.

And it wasn’t as if that was an easy catch Rohit gave - Head may never make one like it in his career again.

The rest of your points do highlight his error as a captain.

Disagree with the first and 4th point. He batted perfectly for the pitch, where scoring against the new hard ball was easier than the older ball. Australia employed the same strategy and lost Warner & M Marsh with the same attacking instinct.

On fourth point, fast bowlers stopped getting swing after 8th over. And there was due expected around the 30 over mark. Spinners were the main threat on the used pitch, bowling them early was the right choice.

Problem was that both spinners were bowling fast and flat (like they normally do in T20s, where rushing through overs has a merit), but on a slow pitch you need to slow it down and put more revs on the ball so that it turns more and causes doubts in the batsmen's mind. This is where Rohit did a Babar Azam, i.e. stood there expecting bowlers to auto-correct themselves, instead of going up to the bowlers to ask them to slow it down, or interact with them about field placings, etc.

I think India should have played Ashwin and Thakur instead of Siraj and SKY, because Ashwin on this pitch would have been brilliant (also because he always varies his pace).

Team selection was an issue. Ashwin+Thakur are far better in batting than AKY+Siraj, and you get 6 bowling options with one of the greatest spinner around on a slow, used pitch.

Hello coach? India should hire you.
Remove dravid. He is done for anyway I believe.

One more blunder is Rohit never got a back up for Sky. He kept all his eggs on that basket knowing sky is never reliable anywhere( in t20s too).As he was planning to bat first, he should have gone for Thakur instead of siraj as batting first will be difficult. He is responsible for loosing the momentum. They should have sent a message to kl to get a move on when he is eating deliveries. There was never a plan b for bowling dept as they bulldozed everyone till now.

Yeah one of his worst days as captain. Was a little surprised he was defensive with his fields. No slips for spinners that was a big mistake. 110/3 could have been 110/4 with head gone and huge pressure on aus batting. Missed opportunity today for sure for rohit

The best captain we've had in ODIs. Dhoni didn't have to contend with a belligerent Australia with this attack. That was a past it Ponting, wayward Johnson and Tait etc and the spinner was nowhere near as good as Zampa.

Very unfortunate that this will be what Rohit will be remembered for. Hopefully, what Rohit-Dravid worked on is improved upon and , more importantly, the domestic structure is reformed and they invest more consistently in the right players starting now.

Can't afford to play the likes of Mukesh Kumar, Jaydev Unadkat in bilaterals when instead they should be looking to give experience to guys with much higher ceilings like Kuldeep Sen, Gurnoor Brar etc.

Once dravid is gone, we should go for an aggressive coach and captain combo. We should not encourage any trundler's with batting capacity. Playing at leagues and knock outs differently is leading to unstable approach. We should have a stable template with same set of players

One of the best ODI Captains. We will move on him from ODI cricket, such is life but a champion cricketer for us.
It wasn't meant to be for him to win an ODI World Cup. He has one T20 WC where he contributed in multiple innings.

But time to build a new opening partnership and bring Jaiswal in.

Yep. Jaiswal and Gill to open.

Don't you think guys Rohit should step down from Test captaincy and concentrate solely on T20 and ODI cricket?

He's also doing the IPL captaincy and it might lead him to fatigue.

He doesn't play all the series for India so he does take rest in between the tours. We saw Pandya captained team for a few series and now Surya will be the captain of team India in their upcoming t20i series against Australia. BCCI have done well in managing the workload of him and the senior players like Kohli, Bumrah etc. I think in bigger series and tournaments, we are going to see Rohit Sharma as captain for another couple of years.

Rohit panicked at the toss; he was expecting Australia to bat first (even Rohit confirmed he would have batted first), but when Cummins said he would field first, Rohit was thinking WTH? And that was it.

Rohit had relied on toss wins and doctored pitches, but in the final, he was utterly clueless because he couldn't understand why Australia would field first - well he found out the hard way.

Rohit was never a good T20 player to begin with and T20 in any case is a youngster's game.

Test cricket though has a place for Rohit, I feel as its languid pace suits Rohit's languid style.

In ODIs, I guess this should be it for him. In any case, not many bilateral ODIs will be held next year I assume.

In any case BCCI will be holding talks with Rohit to know about his future plans.

Rohit should step down gracefully from odi 's. Jaiswal is quite good and can replace him.Rohit is not able to last more than 10 overs in the name of aggression as he is suffering with severe Hamstring issues .Rohit ,Shami,Jadeja should be replaced asap as odi's are sporadic now a days, we won't have much time to rebuild

Rohit is not going to be playing the next world I belive. India should invest in the new captain.

He was so cool under pressure, especially during the first Super Over when he hit 6 sixes in a row. He didn't show any reaction what-so-ever, was great to watch.

Former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly has opened up on his decision to replace Virat Kohli with Rohit Sharma as the captain of the Indian men's cricket team. He told during an interview with a local media outlet:

"Look at the way he captained in the World Cup. Taking India to the final. I think India was the best team in the competition till they lost the final. So he is a good captain, IPL trophies. I am not surprised by the way he led. He became the captain when I was the BCCI president, and I am not surprised by the way he has led the team. I made him the Indian captain because I saw the talent in him, and I am not surprised by what he has done."

Sunil Gavaskar slams Rohit Sharma for his blunder against Pakistan in ICC T20 World Cup 2024, he said:

“Why he didn’t start with Jasprit Bumrah? Bumrah is the best fast bowler in the world, but he was not given a new ball. You have to remember that a new ball does a lot, and when it becomes two overs old, the impact goes down."

“He was given a ball in the third over and almost brought a wicket. Shivam Dube dropped a catch of Mohammad Rizwan."

“He got rid of Babar Azam in his second over. Bumrah dismissed Rizwan in his third over. He is a wicker-taker, and you can’t keep him waiting,”

Speaking to bcci.tv Rohit Sharma revealed how the team took the risk of playing in an unusual way only to get a result out of a rain-hit Test match in Kanpur, he said:

“Aggression is all about my actions. The kind of batting we do, field positioning and bowling we do, that to me is aggression. This wouldn’t have been possible without the other 10 players. We had lost 2-and-a-half days. It was easy for everyone to drift away from the goal we had,”

“When we came on the fourth day, we needed 7 wickets quickly. So I thought, everything started there. The bowlers came to the party first. When we returned to the dressing room, we had to take a little bit of a risk to get a result. The result could’ve gone either way but I was okay with it. So was the coach and other player. You have to be brave enough to take those decisions and play that way,”

“People could have criticized us for the way we played. But what matters is what we think inside this change room and we applied it on the field. It was a clear plan to get the result. But how do we do it, everybody tried looking for the answers,”

Rohit Sharma received massive praise from the former Australian wicketkeeper-batter, Brad Haddin who lauded the Indian captain’s approach to force a result, he said:

“But it wasn’t about how many runs they scored as silly as that sounds it was about having enough time. Find enough time in the game so they can bowl Bangladesh out,”

“They took the game on they went at eight an over but it was all about giving themselves enough time to bowl Bangladesh out. My hat goes off to the support staff”,

“Rohit Sharma has always been like this. He thinks win first and then everything second and what they did with the way they played they gave themselves a chance to win a Test match that was going to fizzle out into a draw, I love the style of cricket. They could have easily had a really good net session, got a draw and no one would have said anything,”

“The mindset of Rohit Sharma is to find a way to manipulate a result. To say okay if we bat for x what we have to chase later and teams aren’t scared of going at 10 and over for 20 overs now because of the way T20 and how explosive some of their batters are so I take my hat off to India because they gave themselves a chance to win the game,”

"More than 90 years after India’s first Test match at Lord's in 1932, Rohit Sharma’s team has made history. With a win over Bangladesh in Chennai last month, India now boasts more Test victories than losses, standing at 179 wins to 178 defeats across 580 Tests."

Read above paragraph in an article today.....

As a side note, Pakistan achieved this (more test win than losses) in it's 16th test match when the W/L record read 4-3 in Pakistan's favor only 3 years after Pakistan made it's test debut in 1952.

Sanjay Manjrekar feels that Rohit Sharma wasn't at his tactical best during India's eight-wicket defeat in the first Test against New Zealand, he said:

"The thing with pacers, you might get wickets, but there are always runs coming through edges. I was a bit surprised, I think tactically for Rohit Sharma, this Test match wasn't his greatest. I can understand Siraj getting one or two overs and Bumrah getting a long spell. But Siraj getting 6 overs in that forespell, I think that is far too many and already a lot of runs on the board, and you had that little margin to chase,"

"And another part is Aswhin. When there is no lavish turn on the pitch, the captain tends to use him with a new ball. He would have been tough for the Kiwi batters had he started off with Bumrah, and even if he had come in in the fourth over of the inning,"

His choice of batting firsr was questionable. I was watching with a friend and we immediately thought that was a poor decision. But obviously no on plans for 46 allout. That is on the team

Time to move on from him.

Rohit Sharma's last four Tests as captain

vs Aus, Adelaide: Lost by 10 wickets
vs NZ, Mumbai: Lost by 25 runs
vs NZ, Pune: Lost by 113 runs
vs NZ, Bengaluru: Lost by 8 wickets

You have a batting lineup with everyone out of form. The only hopes for your team are a couple of seamers and an enthusiastic but inexperienced kid who bats at no 6. So what do you do when you win the toss? Any sane person would put the opposition to bat. But yet you choose to bat because you don't want to bat last in your second innings. Hardly surprising then, that the opposition runs though your out of form batting lineup like a hot knife though butter on the first day, ensuring that the match is lost for you.
Even the part time waiter at Deepanshu Dhaba in Jhumri Telaya could come up with better tactics!

Just get Rohit out of the team. The series is at stake.

Rohit is the sixth Indian captain to lose four back-to-back Test matches. Datta Gaekwad was the first Indian captain to lose four Tests in a row. Under his leadership, India lost four Tests in a row against England during the five-match series played from June 4 to August 24 in 1959.

Amazing Fact about loss of 4 matches in a sequence is not only Rohit's achievement but also he is the architect of that.
