Rohit Sharma has had an absolutely brilliant World Cup thus far, and is currently the top run-scorer in the tournament, with 544 runs and 4 centuries in just 7 innings. He has really sealed his place as one of the best openers to have ever played ODI cricket. However, this thread is to break down each innings he's played in this tournament to show the strange string of early dropped chances or missed run outs that show he has not been able to achieve such extraordinary figures without some extraordinary luck along the way.

MATCH 1 VS SOUTH AFRICA:

A ball that ballooned off Sharma's glove was dropped by Faf du Plessis who was very late moving forward to the ball. Rohit was on 1 at the time, and went on to make 122* to win India the game.

MATCH 2 VS AUSTRALIA:

Nathan Coulter-Nile dropped Rohit at short midwicket when he was on 2. Sharma went on to score 57.

Match 3 vs New Zealand was rained out.

MATCH 4 VS PAKISTAN:

Rohit Sharma was left stranded in the middle of the pitch after being sent back by his partner. However, Fakhar threw the ball to the wrong end, giving Sharma enough time to scramble back to safety. He was on 32 at the time, and went on to score 140.

MATCH 5 VS AFGHANISTAN:

Rohit is bowled on 1 by Mujeeb.

MATCH 6 VS WEST INDIES:

Rohit is dismissed caught behind on 18, in an admittedly questionable decision, an unlucky dismissal for Sharma.

MATCH 7 VS ENGLAND:

Rohit edges a ball to second slip, where Joe Root drops a regulation slip catch. He was on 4 at the time, and went on to score 102.

MATCH 8 VS BANGLADESH

Sharma tried to pull for 6 but doesn't get it out the middle of the bat, and only finds Tamim Iqbal at square leg, who dropped this relatively simple catch. He was on 9 at the time, and went on to score 104.

Had the fielding in these chances been simply up to scratch with the standards of international cricket, Rohit may easily have found himself with only 67 runs in 7 innings this tournament. As luck would have it, he has survived all these chances and has gone on to make big, match-winning knocks showcasing his true class and batting ability. Luck plays a big part in all cricket, with many batsmen being dropped early in what turned out to be a spectacular knock. Still, you have to admit the frequency of such fielding mishaps against Sharma in this tournament alone is quite remarkable, and that Rohit has had a far bigger slice of luck in this World Cup than most.

He is a FTB who has been very lucky with countless dropped chances. He hasn't even scored that big in last two games despite a hundred

Doesn't matter.

If you have watched Rohit Sharma's career from the start, he had plenty of unlucly dismissals in the first 50 or so matches of his career when everyone used to mock him.

He deserves every bit of luck now.

They all even out at the end. Just shows how nervous fielders get when it's his catch. Shows how important they think he is and he's surely cashing in. Kohli has been unlucky with so many soft dismissals in the WC. That's a bigger worry

Tell me when ODI batsman from Pakistan better than Rohit. Past or present

Saeed Anwar

If Rohit played in 90's pitches, eh would not average more than 30. He is a FTB if ever there was one and England pitches are perfect for him

Look at his test record....pathetic

So Indian bowlers should get more credit than 90s bowlers of Pak in that logic. The bowl on flat tracks

Yes he has had the rub of the green but he deserves it. He has been a phenomenal ODI opener since 2013, and he needed a really big World Cup to get his due recognition as a legendary ODI opener. He is 32 and will probably be past his peak in 2023 - this World Cup was meant to be his moment in the sun, and I am very happy for him.

Amazing player! Again this proves that he is a great batsman as he will make you pay if you drop him early in the innings!

He is really a great player! If you give him a single chance he will make you pay! just only one life in each innings is still really good! If it was like 3 or 4 lifes in every single innings, I wouldn't rate much!

Fair points. But you still have to take advantage of these chances. He is a brilliant ODI player.

He has been lucky but he was able to capitalize on these chances so full points to him.

LOL, Saeed Anwar wasn’t 1/3rd as good as him in ODI cricket. Anwar was the ultimate FTB who was hopeless against good attacks in ODI cricket. His record against Australia in ODIs is a joke.

Yeah sure. Performance vs best bowling side of that era.

Faf catch can hardly be called a drop. He did well even to get there. Didn't Babar edge one and Latham dropped? Also one of the lbw review was not turned down by Dhoni when it was out. If you drop good batsmen they will punish you.

Fortune favors the brave may sound cliche but I would take a few Rohit's in the Pak team any day over the likes of Fakhar

Fortune favours the brave, as Rohit said today. The sign of a great batsmen is that they make you pay for your mistakes. Rohit is vulnerable in the first 20 balls and then he becomes very hard to get out unless he decides to go for broke. There's a reason why he's scored as many 100s and 50s and with same strike rate and average as Kohli in the last 5 years. He's that good.
