Russia has hit Ukraine with a wave of attacks, dive-bombing the capital, Kyiv, with what appear to be Iranian-made "kamikaze" drones.

Critical infrastructure was hit in the Kyiv, Dnipro and Sumy regions, with electricity cut in hundreds of towns and villages, the government says.

At least eight people were killed, four in Kyiv and four in Sumy.

Calls have mounted for sanctions on Iran, which continues to deny supplying drones to the Russian military.

A week ago, the Ukrainian capital was hit by Russian missiles at rush hour, part of nationwide attacks which left 19 dead.

In the latest attack, starting at around 06:30 (03:30 GMT), 28 drones targeted the capital but only five hit targets, according to the Mayor, Vitaliy Klitschko.

The city reverberated to the rattle of gunfire as anti-aircraft batteries frantically tried to shoot them down. Video on social media appeared to show one interception.

In the Shevchenkivskyi district, rescuers searched for survivors in the ruins of a block of flats that partially collapsed after one attack. The street was cordoned off as dozens of firefighters and emergency staff worked at the scene. Among the four people killed in the district was a pregnant woman.

Across the street from the ruined building, the offices of Ukraine's energy company were also hit. The facility was probably the intended target of the strike.

Mayor Klitschko described the attacks as a "genocide of the Ukrainian people", saying, "The Russians need a Ukraine without Ukrainians."

The city authorities, he added, were expecting air defence systems to be delivered soon to protect the capital from further drone attacks.

"The enemy can attack our cities, but it won't be able to break us," said President Volodymyr Zelensky, describing the attacks as "terrorising the civilian population".

Despite an appeal from the mayor for people to seek shelter, the city's streets were far from deserted. Between two sets of strikes, plenty of people could be seen going about their business.

A Reuters news agency journalist reported seeing fragments of a drone used in the attack that bore the words "For Belgorod".

The Russian border city of Belgorod has been hit several times since Russia invaded Ukraine. Moscow blames Kyiv for the attacks.

Despite the mounting evidence of Iranian drones being used, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanani insisted his country was not a "party in the war", adding: "We have not supplied any weapons to the sides of the Ukraine war."

Russia said it had hit Ukrainian military command facilities and energy systems "in the course of 24 hours" with long-range air- and sea-based weapons on Sunday.

In this case, the Italian government would resort to a mandatory reduction in consumption and move to rationing across industrial sectors that would last for 31 days.

Now, Western economic sanctions have failed, the Russian economy is intact and rising with trade of its natural resources in the East, Russia has initiated the BRICS+ alliance, Ruble is the strongest performing currency this year, meanwhile the West is worried about high interest rates cos people are struggling to pay of debts, and not to mention Europe is struggling to meet energy needs.

Wars are no longer fought the conventional way, its now cyber and economic warfare, and Russia has won in spades.

I had to wait for a Russian to translate one of Putin's recent interviews with a journalist. He says when the Russians started the SMO they did not have any intentions of occupying the whole of Ukraine.

Now he didn't explicitly say in this interview that he plans to occupy all of Ukraine. But it's clear enough that as the SMO has gone on and he's realised the west don't want to negotiate, he has to change his objectives and plans too.

Using military math and common sense, I don't see how can occupy so much territory without mobilising millions. But what they have right now + Odessa + Kharkiv is possible.

Here’s a little education for those who do not understand economics.

What accelerated the inflation rate in the West was indeed, Covid. During the lockdown, the government created money out of thin air, BUT, the difference between 2008 and 2020 was that we were in lockdown. This meant that the consumer economy ground to a halt, while millions were getting payouts from the government, businesses, aswell as consumers.

Once the lock down ended, consumers had extra cash, businesses had extra cash, and all of a sudden there was a massive demand for goods. However, supply chains were nowhere back to normal, and since supply was low, demand was high, ergo, inflation.

This is elementary economics.

The war in Ukraine reduced supply for energy - that’s it. The rest, was down to Covid lockdown, and relentless QE since 2008.

The stock market thrived and tech companies thrived during the covid period - people stuck at home bought new computers and laptops and spent more time playing games and time online, let alone people working from home having to upgrade equipment. It has only been the last 8-10 months that the stock market has crashed and spending has crashed.

Sure, stock markets thrived, but this was because governments had unleashed the mother of QE infusion, and it had to be spent somewhere by the banks, markets it was. Same pattern since 2008, QE has pumped the equality markets.

It is also true that people stuck at home indulged in Electronics and Games, but these represent a small percentage of the RPI and CPI inflation calculators. Plus, most of the Electonics sold were from existing stock, newer models suffered a slowdown in supply due to supply chain issues. A good example of this was the PS5 and Xbox, along with TVs.

Retail, Hospitality, & Travel industries were decimated due to lack of demand during Covid lockdown. Major Retail companies went bust, new Car sales plummeted, massive job losses in all 3 industries.

Hence, as I mentioned, Covid 'accelerated' the rate of inflation.

The attacks in the early hours of Tuesday hit Kyiv, Kharkiv in the east, Mykolaiv in the south and central regions of Dnipro and Zhytomyr, where officials said hospitals were running on backup generators.

“Since October 10, 30 percent of Ukraine’s power stations have been destroyed, causing massive blackouts across the country,” the Ukrainian leader said on Twitter.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared martial law in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia, four regions of Ukraine that Russia proclaimed as annexed last month.

Putin did not immediately spell out the steps that would be taken under martial law, but said the measures were intended to increase the stability of the economy, industry and production in support of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine.

“We are working on solving very complex, large-scale tasks to ensure a reliable future for Russia, the future of our people,” he said in televised remarks to members of his Security Council on Wednesday.

Mykhailo Podolyak, a Ukrainian presidential adviser, rejected the move and said Kyiv would continue its counteroffensives against Russian forces in Ukraine.

“‘Martial law’ implementation on the occupied territories by Russia should be considered only as a pseudo-legalisation of (the) looting of Ukrainians’ property,” he wrote on Twitter.

“This does not change anything for Ukraine: we continue the liberation and deoccupation of our territories.”

Reporting from Moscow, Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Vall said that the declaration would have far-reaching consequences for those living in the Russian-occupied regions.

“It will mean more restrictions on the movement of people. It will mean the military and local administrations will have the right to do what they want in terms of how people move around, or restrict them from gathering,” he said.

“Political parties gathering and activities will be banned, and civilian or semi-civilian factories will be asked to reorient their production lines to help the military.

“The mobilisation in those regions will now be a total mobilisation instead of partial mobilisation, which has taken place in the Russian Federation,” he added.

Putin also gave additional emergency powers to the heads of all regions of Russia.

The government was instructed to set up a special Coordination Committee under Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to work with Russia’s regions to boost Moscow’s war effort in Ukraine.

Russian state agency TASS reported that the decree would be sent for approval to the Federation Council – the upper house of Russia’s parliament – and that the lower house State Duma would be informed of the decision.

Putin did not provide details of the extra powers to be given to the heads of Russian regions under his decree, but said the order would be effective from Thursday.

Draft legislation indicates it may involve restrictions on travel and public gatherings, tighter censorship and broader authority for law enforcement agencies.

The annexation of the four partially occupied regions on September 30 came three days after the completion of Kremlin-orchestrated “referendums”, which are largely regarded as having no validity by the international community.

Despite the formal announcement, Russia is losing ground by the day to Kyiv’s counteroffensive. In Kherson, one of the four occupied regions, Moscow made plans this week to evacuate civilians.

Sergei Surovikin, a Russian air force general appointed on October 10 to lead the invasion, admitted that the situation was “very difficult“.

The “enemy is not abandoning its attempts to attack Russian troop positions,” he said on Wednesday.

Kherson is arguably the most strategically important of the four regions as it contains both the only land route to the occupied Crimean Peninsula, which Russia seized in 2014, and the mouth of the Dnieper River.
